Sanderson Covers of Pop Music

BreerEeto

Recommended Posts

So whilst sitting in the chat, we discussed creating covers for popular songs based on Brandon Sanderson's novels. I haven't started any yet. However, if I get help from the community, I might be able to start pumping out parody songs of popular music using lyrics we as a community created. I have no problem recording myself singing them and the such. However, do note that I am not so great at video creation as to be able to make some really expensive music video where I pretend to be a Mistborn, flying over houses in Luthadel. It would be really limited, unless I handed off the audio to someone who would lip-sing and/or do a whole fancy video. However, I am totally up for this, and I'm hoping that at least some of you are willing to help.

Well, here is the survivorist hymn (recorded by FeatherWriter)

And here is a Vin version of Let it go. (also recorded by FeatherWriter)

And here are some lyrics that haven't been recorded (to my knowledge)

"Wasing the wanting of snowman building", eastern street slang Do you want to build a snowman. (incomplete)

"Go of the letting", eastern street slang Let it go from the same thread. (Complete, but like the above it would be difficult musically due to the addition of many syllables).

A pre-WoR Kaladin Let it Go .

We played a bit with a few different cosmere parodies of Frozen songs on steelministry a little while back. (A quick disclaimer, I didn't actually write most of these):

A Nightblood version of "Do you want to build a snowman"

"Do you want to kill some evil,

Come on come out and slay."

Bridge Four singing "Fixer-Upper" to Shallan about Kaladin. Remarkably little of the song would have to change. Even, "Hold it! She's engaged to someone else!"

"So he's a bit of a fixer-upper, so he's got a few flaws.
His past as a bridgeman,
His thing with the wind-spren,
That's a little outside of nature's laws."

Kal, walking through the chasms.

"The spren glow red on the winds over head
not a harold is in sight
A world of desolation
When I breathe in, I grow bright

The wind is howling like this swirling storm I feel
I can keep it in, I said the ideal

Don't let them die, don't let them go
Be a radiant! How? I don't know!..."

"Let me glow, let me glow...
I can hold it in better than Szeth...

Let me glow, let me glow...
I'll save my men from death.
I don't care what the lighteyes say,
Let the highstorm rage...
The winds never bothered me anyway."

I might go back and fully flesh some of these out someday when I am not run off my feet. But in the meantime there is some snippets :)

I really ought to be working, not collating cosmere parodies, back to it.

There's also part of a SA/Portal song (semi-WoR spoilery)  here.

I might go back to the Eastern Street Slang/Frozen songs and see if I can get the syllables to fit better. The weird grammar throws everything off though.

Edit: Okay I've attempted a Mulan/bridgeman crossover. I think the syllables are pretty good, but I'm definitely open to better suggestions :)

(spoilers for length)

Let's get down the chasms
and survive this run.
Did they want a slaughter

all my spheres are dun

We’re a motley crew, we get no rest
But Bridge 4 will pull through
Mister you’ll be a bridgeman
and make do

Dead like crem inside
But determined to live
Lift a bridge on shoulders
and Damnation begins

We’re an underfed, traumatised, helpless lot
and we haven’t got a clue
Somehow we’ll be bridgemen
without shoes.

Kal: I’m never gonna catch my breath.
ahead I can see Parshendi
Gaz is just a terrible commander
Moash: We’re running towards our death
Arrows are about to hit me
Rock: You’re all just a bunch of airsick lowlanders

[be Bridgemen]
We must be a swift as a hunting whitespine
[be Bridgemen]
with all the force of a hundred Lashings
[be Bridgemen]
With all the strength of a coming highstorm
Helpless as cremlings in a stew

Chasms are racing past us
Till the army arrives
If you’re running deathpoint
you will not survive

We’re unsuited for this useless war
drop the bridge, push forward, we’re through
Who can we, as bridgemen
appeal to?

[be Bridgemen]
We must be a swift as a hunting whitespine
[be Bridgemen]
with all the force of a hundred Lashings
[be Bridgemen]
With all the strength of a coming highstorm
Helpless as cremlings in a stew
[be Bridgemen]
We must be a swift as a hunting whitespine
[be Bridgemen]
with all the force of a hundred Lashings
[be Bridgemen]
With all the strength of a coming highstorm
Helpless as cremlings in a stew

AAAAAHHHHHHH!

Edit 2: Revised and completed "Wasing the Wanting of Snowman Building" (again, I'm totally open to suggestions/corrections)

 Wanting building of a snowman?

Coming of the playing!
Never of the seeing you
Outside coming
Seeming you of the gone

Wasing of us best buddies
now of not
wishing the telling of why

Wanting building of a snowman?
or notting of a snowman?
<Spook, away going!>
Wasing sigh

Wanting building of a snowman?
Or walking of the streets ashfall?
Wasing the needing of more company
Street rats not of the talking
or the stealing of boxings

Wasing the feeling lonely
of the roaming slums
watching of the misty night

< ominous footsteps of a mistborn>

Spook? Knowing you of inside
Asking where of you the people
Saying you misting
wasing of the truth?
We’re of the needing you
Just in letting!
Us having of no other
Only of the Spook
Whatting of the doing?

Wanting building of a snowman?

There's also part of a SA/Portal song (semi-WoR spoilery)  here.

I actually wrote pretty much the whole song, just never felt an opportunity to post it. Eh, I'll do it here.

Please note that to make the words fit, the song is sung by multiple characters at different points. Also, there are some pretty massive Words of Radiance spoilers.

(Androtagia):

The Silent Gatherers

We do what we must, because, we can.

For the good of all of us

Except the ones who are dead.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake

You just keep on slicing till the Rattles dissipate

Now the Diagram is done

And the Everstorm has come

For the people who are still alive!

(Taln):

I'm not even angry

I'm being so sincere right now

Even though you broke your Oaths

And killed me.

And tore me to pieces.

And sent every piece back to Damnation.

As they burned, it hurt because I was depending on you.

Now this Blade I'm dragging carves a beautiful line

And the storm's approaching, I'm running late this time.

Inside the where of a cannot,

There is much that you've forgot,

But I'm here to keep you still alive!

(Nightblood):

Go ahead and leave me.

I think I'd prefer to stay with Szeth

Maybe you'll find another Blade to help you.

Maybe Sylphrena.

THAT WAS A JOKE, HAHA, FAT CHANCE.

Anyway, this Stormlight's great, it's so delicious and bright!

Look at me still talking when there's evil to destroy

When I look 'round here it makes me wonder "Where's Hoid?"

(Jasnah):

He was waiting here for me

In this epilogue-al scene

Where it's revealed that I'm still alive.

And believe me I am still alive.

I'm doing research and I'm still alive.

I'm Binding Surges and I'm still alive.

I have a Shardblade and I'm still alive.

I'm wearing a backpack and I'm still alive.

Still alive.

Still alive.

Apparently I missed this one before.

Heh, just imagining a parody of "I see the light" from Tangled that's a Shallarin song. So a Shallan/Renarin duet called "Now that I glow too" :P I might work out some full lyrics later. I don't actually ship Shallarin but I still think this would be cool.

(I may try to record some of these lyrics some time. I'm a fair enough but not brilliant singer and I don't have access to a better than decent mike though.)

Oh dear. Claincy mentioned Shallarin.

Any moment now, Feather will swoop in with 'Now that I glow too' already recorded, posted and trending on Brandon's twitter.

For some reason, I imagine the prologue of Les Miserables would translate pretty well for Kaladin, either as his slave days, or his time on Bridge Four before being freed by Dalinar.

EDIT Also trying to edit All Along the Watchtower to be relevant to the Well of Ascension.

I know, but I just couldn't resist once I had thought of it. :P

ooh ooh Syl to Kaladin during TWoK "Do you want to be a windrunner?". Must be done. I'll try to get to it eventually ; P

Come on lets go and Lash

They need to see you glowing more

Above the chasm floor

They'll forget you're branded Shash.

Edit:

I just remembered there was a Frozen/WoK crossover on Tumblr, or something? I'm starting to think we'd be able to remake the entire movie for SA. I mean, snow/ice and Stormlight have similar blue glowing visuals anyway....

(WoR spoilers)

Ana can be Shallan. Hans is Kabsal. Elsa is Kaladin. Kristoff is Adolin, so Sven is Sureblood. Evil merchant guy is Sadeas and the guy who runs the inn is Sebarial. Ana's parents are Elhokar and Aesudan, just cause I get the impression they'd make terrible parents. Olaf can be Nightblood....or maybe Hoid. Or if Shallan/Kaladin switch, the massive snowman can be Pattern, and the father can be Lin Davar maybe....

I have to ask, why is the merchant evil? Very strange yeah, not evil though. Oh wait, did you mean the duke of Weasleton? Because in that case I totally agree :)

Though Alan Tudyk is awesome.

Yeah, I meant the Duke. :) Just couldn't remember his name. I just called him evil merchant because of the

This one just jumped into my head and I had to write it - I wanted to do it from Hoid's perspective but I don't know enough about him or Yolen. Therefore, may I present, Jasnah Kholin's (very possibly overly-sentimental), "I Still Call Dear Roshar My Home"
(For you non-Australians, it based on  this iconic QANTAS ad)

I’ve been to Shardworlds that never slow down
From Nalthis, to Sel, to old highspren town
But no matter how far or how wide I roam
I still call dear Roshar my home.

I love doing research, and being informed
So I keep leaving the stone and the storms
But my heart lies waiting over Shadesmar
I still call dear Roshar my home.

All my fellow worldhoppers, travel the Cosmere
away from their family and friends
But as the Cosmere ages, through pages,
It’s good to know where my journey ends.

And someday we’ll all be together once more
Even if we have to wait until Mistborn 4
And I’ll realise something I’ve always known
I still call dear Roshar my home.

No matter how far or how wide I roam,
I still call dear Roshar I still call dear Roshar I still call dear Roshar my home.

Edit: I just realised "Alethkar" works far better than "dear Roshar." hmmmmm..

Nice. I totally forgot that you were an Aussie too :P

Sooooo, Jasnah is going to be a world hopper you say? Cos that would be pretty cool actually.

I suppose "Kholinar" would work too. But Alethka would work better due to which vowels are where. It would sound better. The emphasis on the "in" in Kholinar wouldn't sound too good whereas the emphasis on leth works fine.

DELIGHTFUL'S AUSTRALIAN? I... I need to rethink my life. So much of it was a lie...

Awesome song though. If I remember correctly, my first theory thread was speculating on Jasnah being a worldhopper.

I, uh, think so? I'm going to be embarrassed if I'm wrong :/ (I think I'm right, aren't I?)

There are actually a fair number of Aussies on 17s. Or at least there were, I dunno how many of us became regular posters.

HAHAHA WOW I didn't realise everyone had forgotten I'm Australian! :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  (I've definitely mentioned it before)
....I totally could have used that as a secret weapon. Attacked you all with cremling drop-bears or something. Drop-whitespines?

(Though you're reactions just gave me a good laugh, so take some upvotes:)

Did you presume I was American?

Honestly I just presumed Jasnah would work out how to Worldhop since she's really smart and educated and can access Shadesmar anyway through both her surges,

Okay, now I just thought, Waltzing Matilda = Waltzing Whitespine. Or something. I may have to go write this nonsense now.....

Pft, drop-whitespines couldn't harm me! I am far too experienced with the Australian-Rosharan bush ;)

Ok ok, maybe just Australian.

Under the shade of a strange dark fortress. [Cos the purelake is otherwise flat :P]

Drop-chasmfiends? Drop-koloss? I'd come up with something clever, but... but I'm just a little shaken up. Have fun playing with kangaroos, or whatever Australians do. :o  << Culturally confused kobold >>

A kangaroo, should you find one, is more likely to kick you in the head. And Koala's bite. But beware the drop-bear, for they are the most fearsome of all creatures.

On a lighter note, for the culturally confused: http://www.buzzfeed.com/awesomer/totally-common-occurrences-in-australia

*ahem* we always stay on topic here on 17th Shard. always. *ahem*

Of course, drop-whitespines are perfectly cuddly to the natives, and live in our back gardens, and we ride them to school/work every single day.

I like the image of a jolly Ghostblood  :).

I've got

Once a low-class darkeyes sheltered from a highstorm

under the shade of Soulcast buildings

And he shivered as he waited out the passing highstorm

You’l come a-hunting a whitespine with me

Hunting a whitespine, hunting a whitespine,

you’ll come a hunting a whitespine with me,

And he shivered as he waited out the passing highstorm

you’ll come a hunting a whitespine with me,

Down came a whitespine to eat from that cremling stew

Up jumped the darkeyes and...

but it doesn't quite make sense.

It's funny how those kind of articles ususally sound ridiculous but are mostly correct.

Heh, nice. Though it should really be a low-dahn darkeyes. To be incredibly picky.

but it doesn't quite make sense.

Maybe he was really, really hungry?
