Sir Jerric
This will be my first time going to a book signing, since I was out-of-town for the Rithmatist one last year. And like many others in my position, I'm having a hard time settling on questions to ask. I have a few that I've been thinking about for a while, but if any have already been answered, I wouldn't mind asking something else. And if anyone has some more interesting ones, feel free to pitch them. Edit: Signing has ended. Brandon is awesome--like Lift, but not so flashy. Full transcription will have to wait for a while, but I want to share a few things while it's fresh. He laid out his upcoming schedule again. The reading was the incubation magic (The Silence Divine), described as a short story. There were two mistcloaks, a Szeth, and a Chalking. Edit Mar-17-2014: Here is a link to the introduction, public Q&A session, and reading, 31 minutes long http://soundcloud.com/sir_jerric/2014-03-13-sanderson-omaha-qa Edit Apr-16-2014: Full transcriptions are lots of work, particularly when life interferes with progress. Rather than continue this charade, I've gone ahead and prepared the audio for distribution. If you want to chip in with transcriptions of questions that interest you, please post them here so I can add them to my master list. You are also welcome to inquire about particular questions, and I'll try to get them transcribed for you. Please be aware that the audio was recorded with a gator clip mike that I carried, so the audio quality varies with my proximity to the signing table. After the first four or five questions, I had secured a decent spot. The original file was three point five hours, but I've taken the liberty of reducing that to the "Good Parts" version posted below. The audio in particular, and perhaps the question index as well, is rife with spoilers, so peruse at your own risk. Here are Dropbox links for the signing audio, and an index for the 85 minute file. 20140313_Sanderson_Omaha_QA_Reading.mp3 (31 minutes) 20140313_Sanderson_Signing_Trimmed.mp3 (85 minutes) 20140313_Signing_Questions_Index.txt Q#1 - ??? - RAFO 00:00:00 Q#2 - Talking MtG 00:00:36 Q#3 - (Prologue Stuff) 00:02:11 Q#4 - (Outlining) 00:03:32 Q#5 - Practice Writing 00:04:49 Q#6 - Szeth's Future 00:05:42 Q#7 - (Gaming) 00:06:16 Q#8 - Mistborn Movie Rights 00:07:04 Q#9 - Mistborn Video Game 00:08:05 New cards for each book 00:08:44 Q#10 - (Advice) 00:09:00 Q#11 - Alcatraz 5 00:10:01 Q#12 - The Bad Choice #1 00:10:31 Q#13 - The Bad Choice #2 00:10:46 Q#14 - Stormlight Archive 00:11:16 Q#15 - ??? - "I will" 00:11:33 Q#16 - Outline to Novel 00:11:47 Q#17 - Flashbacks 00:12:49 Q#18 - Cosmere Books 00:13:19 Q#19 - Lincoln Signing 00:14:07 Recorder Spotted 00:14:47 Q#20 - Smart-Alec 00:14:59 Q#21 - State of the Outline 00:15:25 Q#22 - Glyphs 00:16:22 Q#23 - Magic on Tour 00:17:12 Q#24 - Elsecalling 00:18:28 Q#25 - The Glyphs and Hired Experts 00:18:46 Q#26 - The Internal Wiki 00:19:58 Q#27 - SD Signing 00:20:20 Q#28 - Hair Colors 00:20:40 Q#29 - Nightblood 00:21:11 Q#30 - Movie Rights 00:22:06 Q#31 - End of the Series 00:23:07 Q#32 - Spren Science 00:23:41 Q#33 - Readings 00:24:45 Q#34 - Favorite MtG Color 00:25:36 Q#35 - Padan Fain 00:26:07 Q#36 - Airport Bookstores 00:26:54 Q#37 - Wit a Herald? 00:27:42 Q#38 - Flashbacks 00:28:12 Q#39 - Writing Space 00:28:30 Q#40 - Braize 00:29:11 Q#41 - Seon-blades 00:29:22 Q#42 - Comet Spren 00:29:46 Q#43 - Storm Inspiration 00:30:15 Q#44 - Kaladin and Elhokar 00:30:56 Q#45 - Reddit AMA 00:31:19 Q#46 - Stuck on a Character 00:31:47 Q#47 - Character Deaths 00:33:26 Q#48 - Main Characters of SA 00:34:01 Q#49 - Lincoln Signing 00:34:26 Q#50 - Smedry Talents 00:34:54 Q#51 - Age Ranges 00:35:31 Q#52 - BYU Classes 00:36:03 Q#53 - Legion Omnibus 00:36:21 Runza 00:37:14 Q#54 - Steelheart movie 00:37:52 Q#55 - MMO Games 00:38:04 Q#56 - Shallan's Mother 00:38:39 Q#57 - Shallan's Father 00:38:52 Q#58 - Two Spren Bond 00:39:12 Q#59 - Online Lectures 00:39:46 Q#60 - Laws of Magic 00:40:18 Q#61 - Unpublished Works 00:40:54 Q#62 - Is Joel going to be a Rithmatist? 00:42:19 Q#63 - ? 00:42:41 Q#64 - Steelheart Weaknesses 00:43:10 Q#65 - Suggested Authors 00:44:03 Q#66 - Writing Age 00:44:59 Q#67 - Romantic Subplots 00:45:17 Q#68 - Writing Process 00:45:47 Q#69 - Other Continents 00:46:42 Q#70 - The Bad Choice #4 00:48:04 Q#71 - Writing Group 00:48:20 Q#72 - Shadesmar 00:49:47 Q#73 - Land / Water Inversion 00:50:21 Q#74 - Magic Deck Setup 00:50:42 Q#75 - Non-fiction 00:51:44 Q#76 - How many Drafts? 00:52:12 Q#77 - Tells (minion) 00:52:34 Q#78 - Started on Fantasy 00:53:46 Q#79 - Dubai Convention 00:54:28 Q#80 - Repeated Characters / Themes 00:54:58 Q#81 - Finding a WoT image 00:55:45 Q#82 - Sandy Sanderson 00:56:59 Q#83 - Mistborn Video Game 00:57:29 Q#84 - Tens in the Cosmere 00:57:53 Q#85 - What you would change in the WoT? 00:59:09 Q#86 - Sources of Inspirations 01:00:08 Q#87 - Illustrators 01:01:28 Q#88 - Where to start? 01:02:10 Q#89 - Is Wit in any other books? 01:02:38 Good heroes 01:03:28 Q#90 - Missing Herald and stone 01:04:06 Q#91 - Hoid asks about Adonalsium 01:04:39 Q#92 - Shardplate and Ideals 01:05:32 Q#93 - Itching to Read? 01:06:15 Q#94 - Nin has the other Honorblade? 01:07:37 Q#95 - (Adonalsium?) 01:08:09 Q#96 - Making Book Covers 01:08:33 Q#97 - Chapter Titles 01:09:26 Q#98 - Another RJ Project? 01:10:02 Q#99 - Wax & Wayne Sequel 01:10:58 Q#100 - Who Killed Asmodean? 01:11:11 Q#101 - Celebrity Magic Tournament 01:11:31 Q#102 - Bond a honorblade and spren 01:12:15 Q#103 - Babsk 01:12:45 Q#104 - Syl's Inspiration 01:13:04 Q#105 - Alloy of Law Sequel? 01:13:41 Q#106 - Why Hoid? 01:13:53 Q#107 - How Many More? 01:14:13 Q#108 - How often you read? 01:14:52 Q#109 - Favorite out-of-fantasy 01:15:16 Q#110 - Soulcasters 01:15:35 Q#111 - Tension and Cohesion 01:16:07 Q#112 - Shallan's Mother 01:16:46 Q#113 - Kelsier meets Gemmel 01:17:05 Q#114 - What Heightening is Hoid? 01:17:20 Q#115 - TableTop 01:17:51 Q#116 - Diverse Fiction, Good Heroes 01:18:37 Q#117 - Heralds are Surgebinders? 01:19:32 Q#118 - Sigzil and Hoid 01:19:45 Q#119 - Annotations 01:20:22 Q#120 - Khriss Appearances 01:20:57 Q#121 - Author of Ars Arcanum? 01:21:32 Q#122 - Does Khriss owe Nazh a new coat? 01:21:40 Q#123 - Mulitple Hemalurgic Charges? 01:22:03 Q#124 - Hemalurgy (partial) 01:22:31 Q#125 - Hemalurgy Charging 01:22:59 Q#126 - Multiple Honorblades 01:23:31 Q#127 - Names 01:23:43 Q#128 - Shardblades 01:23:60 Q#129 - Pattern's History 01:24:08 Q#130 - Hoid is scared? 01:24:38 Q#131 - Southern Scadrial 01:24:58 Some Questions Asked (with Paraphrased answers): Are there any Stormlight Archive annotations in the pipeline, and when might they be posted? He has part one of the Way of Kings done, but he keeps referring to Way of Kings Prime, so he doesn't think he'll release any until he is ready to be posting that. (Someone in the line brought up the comet spren)(He dodged around a bit before saying that the comet spren are important (might have said "to at least one order of Radiant" as well). Need to check the audio on this one.) Question about the glowing shardplate in Dalinar's vision was RAFO'd when the person asked with reference to Syl getting up to human-sized, and/or it being a fourth Ideal upgrade. Could a Seon/Skaze be crafted into a Shardblade?(This answer sounded affirmative, with words like "potentially" involved. I got distracted a bit at the time. Awesomeness Summoned
Depending on how much he is RAFO'ing the Khriss questions, could ask if he/she is one of the correspondents from the two letters.
ROSHtaFARian2.0
Potential questions: 1) Is it a coincidence that the name Zahel is so similar to Nahel, as in Nahel bonds, or was that similarity a conscious choice on Vasher's part? 2) According to your publishing plans, what's the next book we'll see a new Shard in? (Not counting Silence Divine).
Moogle
1) Did the Skybreakers' or Dustbringers' spren look like comets? 2) What color are Darkness' eyes? 3) Would a Radiant with an Honorblade with different Surges have more than two Surges? 4) Can you hold two Honorblades at once and gain more than two Surges? 5) Does your Stormlight efficiency decrease with each additional Honorblade? What if you had all ten, would you be incapable of Surgebinding at all? Edited March 13, 2014 by Moogle
Awesomeness Summoned
3) Would a Radiant with an Honorblade with different Surges have more than two Surges? Brandon said last night at the signing that a KR holding an Honorblade from a different order would gain those abilities in addition to their own.
Moogle
Brandon said last night at the signing that a KR holding an Honorblade from a different order would gain those abilities in addition to their own. RShara
If a Mistborn is killed with a steel spike, does the spike carry all four Physical Allomantic powers? If yes, is only one power granted to the recipient, selected by the bind point used? I believe this was answered in the Mistborn books. Don't have them handy at the moment but it was something like how it was a waste to use Mistborn because only one of the powers would transfer, and he (Lord Ruler or Ruin) preferred to corrupt a Mistborn and give him the spikes to enhance his abilities.
Awesomeness Summoned
@moogle, I would venture a guess at yes you can wield more than one since you aren't actually creating a bond with the honorblade, it's just channelling its power through you. If you can use KR abilities and honorblade at the same time there shouldn't be a reason why the honorblades would cancel each other out either. It probably wouldn't be a feasible option, though, since two honorblades at once would require crazy amounts of stormlight. It'd be nice to have confirmation though. RShara
Lovely. I must have missed that in the wealth of other answers. Can you quote the question and answer for me? I think it was this one from Houston. Q: If a non windrunner picked up Jezrien's honorblade would they gain windrunner powers as well? A: Yes Q: If a windrunner picked up that blade, would their abilities be enhanced? A: There would be some compounding but strength is not as much an issue with surgebindingg as is the strength of the spren bond and how much stormlight you are using.

Kurkistan
Here's a few I've added to my list since WoR came out: Does being the donor of a Hemalurgic spike have any implications for your afterlife? Are there a bunch of Scadrian souls wandering the afterlife with holes their personalities/memories/identities? Why did Syl turn into a hammer during Kaladin's fight with Szeth? A hammer might be better against Plate, perhaps, but not against squishy flesh. You've said that Drabs on Nalthis don't have Innate Investiture: How are they still sentient, then?
Sir Jerric
Depending on how much he is RAFO'ing the Khriss questions, could ask if he/she is one of the correspondents from the two letters. I'll see if I can slip that in after, but I don't want to get too specific. I hope if I leave him room to talk, he'll say more. =) I believe this was answered in the Mistborn books. Don't have them handy at the moment but it was something like how it was a waste to use Mistborn because only one of the powers would transfer, and he (Lord Ruler or Ruin) preferred to corrupt a Mistborn and give him the spikes to enhance his abilities. Thanks for the reminder of that passage. I suppose the part I really want to get at is whether or not a multi-charged spike could be placed in a new position to change the power it grants. I'm also curious about selective ability stealing via the correct bind points. I also added a new question above: Does binding oneself to the Oathpact improve the Surgebinding of an honorblade user?

Haradion Drogon
Hmm... Spoiler Heavy here. Did Nightblood's creation involve Divine Breaths? Could a Seon/Skaze be crafted into a Shardblade? The Reason I speculate this, is that Shardblades are made from Spren - which we know to be splinters of Honour/Cultivation. Since Nightblood is referred to as a Shardblade, but has no connection to Honour, I speculate that it has a splinter of Endowment within it (A Divine Breath) - and is therefore a "Shardblade" as it hold the splinter of a Shard. A Seon-Blade would confirm this theory. Asking if it was Awakened with A Divine Breath, might be a way to slip past the RAFO's...
aurik
A few (spoiler-heavy) Bondsmith-related questions (most likely will get RAFO'ed, though) Can a KR (say, a Bondsmith) somehow break or alter the bond between the Listeners and the voidspren? Are the spren that a Bondsmith binds to inherently more powerful than other spren? Is there a strict 1-to-1 relationships between KR's and spren, or can more than 1 KR bond to a specific spren (say, the Stormfather)? If there are up to 3 Bondsmiths at a time, is one of the other Bondsmiths bound to the Nightwatcher? Are Bondsmiths always Shardless? Or is this specific to Dalinar's relationship to the Stormfather? Did Dalinar speak two oaths, or three? Also, were the Parshendi already on Roshar before the arrival of Shards?
