War breaker Hoid (spoilers)

Recommended Posts

Sup everybody, first post on the site! For those who have finished mistborn era 1 and warbreaker. When Lightsong introduces Siri to Hoid, he's telling a story about the past of Hallandren. Anyway, Hoid is dropping sand and metal shavings as he's explaining his story. Hoid also drops "ripped pieces of paper with writing on them". Am I thinking too hard, or are these the corners of sazeds and tindwyls hero of ages manifest that Preservation was ripping to give Sazed clues to not let Vin release Ruin at the well. Thoughts?!?!?

Nah, Hoid had nothing to do with things like that. That was entirely Preservation and Ruin fighting one another and doing all kinds of stuff. All Hoid did over there was take a bead of lerasium to become a mistborn, and maybe some other small things, but nothing else that is important to the story.

Your speaking of secret history right? when Kel sees him grab the bead in the cognitive realm?

Must just be a coincidence that Hoid drops ripped pieces of paper with writing on them haha. I haven't finished warbreaker, so maybe the materials Hoid is dropping during his story to Siri will he explained.....? Or it's just for effect of the story he's telling and has no significance what so ever lmao!! Thanks!

Welcome to the Shard! As mentioned, the timeline doesn't work out for Hoid to have had a copy of Kwaan's writing and that had nothing to do with him whatsoever. He's dropping objects related to the story he's telling, paper with writing when discussing the discovery of new Commands, metal when the Manywar begins, leaves when talking about Hallandren's environment... no reason to read any special meaning into any particular examples. Also, we know that what Hoid does here is related to Yolish storytelling/Lightweaving.

Does the sand storytelling Hoid uses in Warbreaker have anything to do with your future possible trilogy "White Sand" written about in a recent blog?

Brandon Sanderson

No, it does not. This is a storytelling method that Hoid developed on his own. It does have a relationship to The Liar of Partinel.

Timeline-wise, Hoid has visited Taldain and Scadrial prior to his appearance in Warbreaker but again, no relation to what he does when telling the story of the Manywar. However, keep an eye out for future Hoid appearances and you might just spot things of interest...

Oh, and two unrelated FYIs. First, you don't need to put a spoiler warning in the title for anything posted in Cosmere Theories, except for Oathbringer since it's new. Second, double-posting is frowned upon and it's considered polite to edit new thoughts into your most recent post if nobody has yet replied, instead of posting a second time.

Sort of. Brandon released sone sample chapters from it but the complete work isn't available to anyone and Brandon has made it clear he wasn't at all happy with how it turned out. You can see some of his thoughts on it here. Even though parts of it are available, it's one of the things that he actively discourages people from reading (in part because it would 'give us the wrong ideas' about certain characters) and he's mentioned how the book is going to be completely rewritten when the time comes. But if you want to have a look, you can find a link to it here:
