Honour & Cultivation

Jeffo

Question

If the shards had a policy of isolationism (I'm sure it's been mentioned there was an agreement for the shards to settle separately and not team up) how can Honour with his intent break this agreement by settling with Cultivation?

Its also been Odiums policy to target shards that broke this agreement making him appear more honourable than the shard with that intent. Really confusing to me and wondered if anyone had an explanation.

As for Honor, it depends on when the agreement was made (if it was pre-Shattering, the Vessels to be weren't yet bound by their Intents or the innate effect Oathbringer mentions) and soon after the Ascension they were still free to act without too much influence from their respective Intents.

Also, Honor could have made a commitment/oath to stay with Cultivation. If he made that oath before the shattering, and viewed it as a more important oath then the one he made with the other shard bearers, he would probably choose to honor his first and more important commitment.

Here are the two quotes we have on this topic:

Quote

violating our pact from the very beginning

Quote
"No good can come of two Shards settling in one location. It was agreed that we would not interfere with one another, and it disappoints me that so few of the Shards have kept to this original agreement."

The first quote makes it seem like they made a formal pact to stay separate, but the latter quote makes it feel more like an informal agreement to not settle near each other. If their agreement was more like the second quote, one could say that a formal oath supersedes that.

The second quote also mentions interference, which could also imply that the pact that they made was related to disrupting another shards work or home. If you think of it that way, Honor collaborating with Cultivation would be very different then say, Ambition going to endowment, corrupting their investiture and screwing with their creations. Honor and Cultivation partnership wouldn't be against their agreement, but the second one would be.

Odium isn't going after paired Shards because they broke this agreement, he's going after all of them and in the order of greatest to least threat to him. And he started with Ambition, which was (so far as we know) solo, because he felt it was the most dangerous.

As for Honor, it depends on when the agreement was made (if it was pre-Shattering, the Vessels to be weren't yet bound by their Intents or the innate effect Oathbringer mentions) and soon after the Ascension they were still free to act without too much influence from their respective Intents.

Out of all the Shards, why does Odium go for Devotion and Dominion?

He targets people with two kinds of ideas. Number one, he can argue they're breaking the rules they set out. And two, people he thinks are a good match for him, or a challenge, or a danger.
