Updates on The Emperor's Soul film project

Recommended Posts

I remember hearing a while back that a Chinese company had purchased film rights to The Emperor's Soul. I think I even remember Brandon saying something about how an executive from the company, DMG, went "all the way down the Cosmere rabbit hole." (although it might've been someone else saying that).

Anyway, I stumbled across this today:

Is this legit? Has anyone else heard anything about this project? It seems like they are pretty far into the process for nobody to have heard ANYTHING yet...

This is the first I've seen of this (though that was only posted yesterday so I'm not surprised it hasn't crossed my tumblr dash yet) but Bota is respected member of the tumblr fandom (and is actually the Chinese translator for Words of Radiance).  So if she says this conversation happened, I absolutely believe her.

As for why we haven't heard anything much about this before now, it might be as simple as Brandon & co. being contractually obligated to stay quite for now and since DMG is based in China it's harder for us to get wind of anything.

I believe yes, this would be a Chinese version of the story. I that international film IP rights are usually done ala carte, though, so a Chinese studio producing Cosmere films should have an impact on Dragonsteel's ability to also sell them to an English market.

Actually, if the Chinese version does will, it would probably IMPROVE those chances.

Yeah that is my post =) I actually got the news just the day before yesterday. I knew this DMG staff for some time. IIRC his superior is in charge of the film project, so this friend's words can be trusted =) Last year he told me they would do TES film and that totally surprised me. It is supposed to be a co-production with some Chinese/Asian influence (but not set in a specific country or dynasty/era). The cast should be global, which means the film is likely to be in English. Though they seemed to have decided to find a Chinese actress to play Shai.

But please note that what was said in the post has not been confirmed by Brandon & co. yet, so everything can change at this point. I will keep in touch with those DMG folks =)

Well... it would definitely be the easiest book to adapt on film.

Yes, but on the other hand this movie could end in something like a "one-room-theatre". Nothing wrong with it, but not that popular.

Just in case, I write this again in English:

This novella was translated into both simplified and traditional Chinese. I wonder which version you'd like to read? In Taiwan, TES was included in a short fiction collection titled 皇帝魂. They've released physical books but I'm not sure if ebooks can be found. While in mainland, the translation was only published in a fantasy magazine. I believe there's no official ebook, though a friend of mine managed to make a scanned version of the whole text and then convert it into pdf format. If you need it, I can send it to you via email =)
