mthorp25
So, i read the mistborn trilogy about 2 years ago, and i absolutely fell in love with it. I started following Brandon Sanderson after i finished the trilogy, and started on The Stormlight Archives, then Elantris, then Warbreaker, followed by Steelheart (and the following books.) The point i am trying to make is that while reading all of these books separately, i had no, NO IDEA that they were all connected in the same universe. I was a regular on Brandons website to try and gain as much info as i could, but i could not get that much from it. I also kept seeing the word, "Cosmere" everywhere, and had no idea what it was. Im not even sure how i stumbled onto this, but I found this website and started reading. It absolutely blew me away that there was a whole universe connecting all these stories. There is so much to learn and read ! I had no idea about the 16 shards, or how any of these planets got their powers. Basically, i am pretty happy i stumbled onto this, because i didnt want to be waiting around for the next novel to be released. Now i have something to sink my teeth into and research. Is the size of the Cosmere, and all of the things in it intimidate anyone? I dont even know where to begin. Any help would be nice, cause i dont even know where to start. Anyways, nice to be here, and i would love to learn what anyone else has to teach !
Voidus
Welcome to the forums! The Cosmere 101 thread is a good place to start, other than that I recommend browsing the Coppermind for some tidbits and if you really want to get into your research I'd recommend you browse Theoryland which is a repository of quotes from Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, Brandon's quotes in particular reveal a great deal of details not documented in any of his currently published works. Can I interest you in a welcome-cookie while you browse?
Mestiv
Can I interest you in a welcome-cookie while you browse? Don't take that cookie, it contains dangerously high amounts of metal.

ChickenPlague
Ok mthorp cookies are hemalurfic spikes. They give you superpowers and all it takes is a piercing. The reason Voidus offered you one is because he (and me) are part of a group of people that give cookies for SCIENCE!

Argent
Heh. I imagine if I had discovered the Cosmere today (instead of years ago), I'd be so overwhelmed, I'd give up on the whole thing.
mthorp25
Are you saying because it is such a huge place with so many things going on it is intimidating?
Argent
There is so much information outside the books, I wouldn't know where to start.
Alfa
There is so much information outside the books, I wouldn't know where to start. Coppermind? I knew about the cosmere since... a year ago, probably (it's also mentioned once or twice in the Ars Arcanum), and last summer I started to browse coppermind. Now I'm not a cosmere expert, but know most of the basics.
Khyrindor
But that's what we're here for. I recommend looking for our best friend (In the books), Hoid. That's where I first started finding things out. Not sure if you realized, but it sounds like you might not have. Steelheart, Rithmatist, and any earth-analogue story is not Cosmere. If Brandon thinks of a story that doesn't fit with his over-arching cosmere-wide system of magic, he doesn't include it in the cosmere, and writes it as a side story, like steelheart. They are still very good, just not cosmere. EDIT: Have you read The Emperor's Soul? The main character in that novella (set on the Elantris world) has a great understanding of the Cosmere. It's where we learned quite a lot about the inner workings of it. Edited January 21, 2016 by Khyrindor
hoidhunter
Welcome...I had the exact same experience about 2 years ago. I'm a compulsive re-reader...especially when the next book in a series is going to come out soon. I was all like " I like this Brandon Sanderson guy...but some of these books have such obvious similarities, it's almost formulaic. I mean, I like it when the rules to a magic system are specific and limited...but did he really need to make like 3 different stories that revolve around that one idea?...wait a minute...why is there a character named Hoid in all of these books...must be some kind of easter egg. (investigates online...finds 17th shard...starts reading...head explodes...) Anyway...now that you are cosmerically aware...I would suggest doing a re-read of the material that's out while keeping an eye out for things like shardpools, worldhoppers, and references to the different realms. To me, the cosmere is basically the world's best easter egg hunt...and it's always really fun to find something new... Good luck, and have an upvote!
mthorp25
Thanks for all the information. I have read all of the books that take place in the Cosmere, and all the ones that take place outside of it. Now i am re-reading the Cosmere books to find easter eggs and other things i didnt know about the first time i read them. Is anyone else just furious that its going to be so many years before the Stormlight Archive is completed? Its supposed to be 10 books total, right? I mean, its gonna be 2030 before he finishes writing them. That breaks my heart, because i want to know what happens now !! Anyway, thanks for the additional advice. Ive decided to read Warbreaker again, after re-reading the first Mistborn Trilogy. Anyone have any hints or pointers to look out for in Warbreaker? Thanks again !!

mthorp25
Thank you all so much for the help. I just got one of my good friends reading Mistborn, and she cant put them down. She is through The Well of Ascension, and started The Hero of Ages. Im so happy this place exists !! It has definitely made me read slower and pay more attention to everything. The prologue in The Alloy of Law, and Wax's interaction with Brown Tan is a perfect example of that, after reading "Mistborn, Secret History". And what a treat that was !!!
Voidus
Just remember to try to discuss it in the secret history subforum or use spoiler tags when outside the subforum to talk about it, it's absolutely awesome so we don't want to spoil it for anyone.
