I'll be attending the Lansing signing, hopefully recording the signing, though the employees of the store have not been very friendly so far. I'm super excited.

Anyways, here's the questions I've currently got lined up. They're questions I asked on his AMA that didn't get answered, as well as some about SoS. I'll be asking them in no particular order. Let me know if I shouldn't ask any of these questions...

Is the Dor gaseous investiture like Stormlight, the Mist, and Breath? If so, is the metallic sheen/shine of  Elantris and Elantrians due to the Dor leaking, or something else?

Does being an Elantrian make one feel like how Szeth describes holding Stormlight or how Vin describes holding the Mist? Likewise, would holding large amounts of Breath make one feel the same in addition to all the Heightenings?

Fabrials are a very interesting feature in the Stormlight Archive to me. Is it plausible that by utilizing whatever feature made the Aon Tia plates within Elantris work, Elantrians could make their own fabrials? Could they be portable?

For the Reckoners, can you shed any light on what ultimately brought down Oregon?

Can kandra and humans successfully mate to birth offspring? If so, does Wayne have kandra blood?

Does Wax's old earring have an allomantic pewter charge? Since we'll never see Wax's old earring again, what attribute was hemalurgically charged in it?

Did Paalm have more than one spike in her the whole time? One to grant the powers, and one of this new metal? - the Chicago signing is the night before, so I'll remove this if Argent gets an answer posted by Tuesday morning

Obviously I don't think I'll get to ask all of these, but the store did say I could go through the line more than once, so yeah.

If it wasn't clear, this is the thread I'll post the after-signing report stuff into.

For the Wax's earring question, you could probably get away with going even broader than that.

SoS Spoilers

You could be all "well since it's gone now and we'll never see Wax wearing it again, there's really no harm in telling us exactly what attribute it had..."

That's devillish. Unless he gives the attribute, he's essentially saying we'll see the earing again...good enough for me.

Elantris spoilers:

On the glowiness of Elantrians, we have a WoB relating to it: it's like they're florescent.

On Elantrian fabrials, we see them. They have metal plates you touch which teleport you elsewhere in the city. So yes, they exist.

Yes but that answer doesn't actually answer my question.

And I know, those are the Tia plates I mention in the question itself. But those are stationary, and we only see Aon Tia ones. I want to know if it can be done with other Aons, and if they can be made portable.

Just make sure you don't ask the SoS spoiler question during general Q&A time.  That would be severely frowned upon, I'm sure.

Obviously. I'm very spoiler sensitive, these are all questions for the signing line itself. I'm not planning on posing one during the general Q&A, mostly because I know all the standard answers already.

The alternative is to ask a spoiler-free questions that could still be interesting (to us). Questions about physical appearance, favorite X, irrelevant (for the story) bits of worldbuilding (e.g. what games do kids play in Alethkar?), and so on are all safe for the general Q&A.

Now that's not a bad idea.

I so wish I could attend this, sadly I can't get off work in time to make it.

I've always wanted to ask him who he used as inspiration for Kaladin.

Kaladin's my favorite character, I love the concept of someone with such obliviously bad PTSD overcoming it and flourishing.

For what it's worth, I highly doubt Kaladin has PTSD. PTSD has these really vivid flashbacks and a tendency to avoid situations that remind its victims the original trauma. I read about this woman who went through a really tough labor and would unconsciously avoid taking care of her child because it reminded her of the birth. Kaladin doesn't have anything like that. The only symptom he shows is hyperarousal, which isn't particularly surprising given the life he's had. In fact, I don't think any of the bridgemen we've seen has PTSD, which I find weird. Shallan probably has it though. What Kaladin has is clinical depression and seasonal affective disorder, and bunch of other emotional problems besides.

But yeah, he's my favorite character, too.

I may be wrong, but I think it has been confirmed he has PTSD. As for the bridgemen, I'd say everyone reacts differently. Not everyone will develop PTSD following a traumatic event, but there is one, Danny (the one who sits not talking, eyes empty), who clearly has it.

Personally I cannot recall Brandon ever confirming that he has PTSD.  He has confirmed that Shallan has it though.  The main thing that Kaladin is dealing with is clinical depression (and some Seasonal Affective Disorder).

Of course that doesn't mean that he doesn't have PTSD on top of everything else, we just don't have confirmation on it.

We don't? Oh well, I thought we did. Shallan is obvious, there was no need of a confirmation.

Blaze, I'm so jealous!  I'll be there tomorrow night, too, but I have been having the hardest time coming up with questions!  The only thing I can think of is "Who the heck was Nakomi (I've been a WoT fan for 15 years)?"  and A.  I know he's not going to answer, and B. I want something good about Stormlight.

I'll be the 30 year old lady with curly hair and glasses, all by her lonesome.  If you recognize me, please stop and say hi!  It would be so nice to actually meet another fan.  I'm a lonely nerd in a world full of non-literates.

I believe there are plenty of Stormlight related questions others have suggested. Any topic in particular you would be interested about?

I am curious about Adolin.  First, he feels comfortable with his blade, like it is an old friend, instead of having the reaction we expect, like those of Kal or Renarin.  Second, he murdered Sadeas, which I can't believe the KR would condone, even if he was a total arse.  I find it hard to believe that such a central character won't be one of the KR, but something doesn't fit.

Something along those lines?  I don't know if any of this has already been explained and I've missed it, but it's been bothering me for a while.

@ReesaB  If you need help coming up with questions I'd recommend looking through the Ultimate List.  Chances are something will catch your fancy.

On the second question you raise, not all of the Orders would be okay with it (neither the Skybreakers nor the Windrunners will take him after that) but other Orders would be totally fine with it (the Dustbringers and the Willshapers would both still allow him to join).

I have A LOT of questions related to Adolin and his Blade... If you want to PM me, I can send you my personal list. Perhaps there is one in there that would personally interest you.

Fair enough. There's a host of factors that determine the likelihood whether a given person will develop PTSD, like genetics, social circumstances, alcohol usage, gender, et cetera. The thing is, PTSD is a really common illness. Over ten percent of war veterans develop it. Even outside military, most people go through at least one trauma in their lives. I think about seven or eight percent of US population can be diagnosed with PTSD at some point in their lives. Considering bridgemen assault contested plateaus pretty much weekly (those plateau assaults are like the quintessential PTSD trigger) and they have no community support whatsoever, I'd expect it to be much more common among them than soldiers. Then again, maybe they just don't live long enough for it to be a problem. Or maybe the Alethi are magically immune to PTSD. Who knows?

Anyways, I know I'm getting really off-topic. It's the thing in WoR where bridgemen find comfort back running bridges. That really rubbed me the wrong way. I though that was an unrealistic response for people like them.

Do you have any sources to back up the claims of PTSD correlating with genetics, alcohol usage, and/or gender? I'd be real curious to read them as this is the first I've heard of any of these causing PTSD.

Well, for gender, about 60% of men and 50% of women go through a major trauma in their life time in the US. But 10% of women and 4% of men develop PTSD. I'm not really sure why this is. It could be because women are physically weaker so feel more threatened by the trauma, or it could be women get less support from their community, which is apparently important in both prevention and treatment. I couldn't find a source for these, so I'm typing from memory. Take it with a pinch of salt. Wikipedia may have something.

For other stuff, you can take a look at this.

Edit: Just checked. NIMH article mentions gender too.

Edit 2: Found a source for those stats.

The only page I see with actual papers cited was http://www.ptsd.va.gov/professional/PTSD-overview/epidemiological-facts-ptsd.aspwhich was a link from the bottom of the second page. Got it bookmarked and will take a look at it when I have time. Thanks man. My career goals involve research into psychopathology so I become immediately interested whenever any form of mental disorder is brought up.

Also, re: women get less support from their community.

That is actually wholly incorrect and the reverse is the accurate observation. This has even came up as a discussion during several classes of mine in the past. Men are often conditioned (by women) and raised to bottle and repress their emotions, to essentionally become 'stoic', and are instantly stigmatized any time they speak of any similar types of problems they may have (for example: depression.) It is viewed as a sign of weakness and is usually met with responses such as "cheer up!", "pull yourself together!", so on and so forth, typically causing the male to be looked down upon.

Granted, this isn't a thread about psychopathology so I'll refrain from typing too much but it's all very fascinating to observe. Societal norms can be a disappointing beast.
