Petition for new mod in Europe/Asia/Africa timezone

I live in Poland, that's in Europe, so generally, I'm very out of sync with other sharders. Most of the time I browse 17th Shard from work, that is from 10 to 18 CET. That translates to 4 AM to 12 AM New York time and even further into the night for the western states.

Being active during the "forum night" I frequently encounter spambots frolicking freely on our boards. I've read some topics and I know that there is not much that can be done by Admins to prevent those bots from posting and we're doomed to just react when they appear.

Unfortunately, as far as I know, most of the forum staff (if not all) lives in North America. No one can expect you guys to be vigilant 24h every day, you all need to sleep, thus leaving the forum "unguarded" from the spambots. At least, I don't see any moderators or administrators on the active users list until it's 1 PM in Poland.

So here is my humble request:

Please, find some trustworthy sharders from Europe/Asia/Africa and give them Moderator privileges. That way, they would be able to stand on watch of the forum, when the American team has good dreams, abut world without Baba Ji ;)

Or, we could just fund one of the regular mods with caffene so they can stay up all night, for years at a time, gazing at an empty screen...

Or hire a wakefulness compounder.

We have a big pile of spikes, maybe we can employ them on some unsuspecting members in the correct timezones to make them spam-swatting drones

Surely a stockpile of Breath would be more useful - making a Lifeless and commanding it to destroy spam all day/night.

This seems as good a time to ask as any...

What exactly is the difference between an administrator, a global moderator, and a moderator? As in, what can administrators do that moderators can't?

Non-global moderators only have moderator power in specific parts of the forum, such as the theory subforums or Sanderson Elimination, global mods have those powers everywhere.

I'm not certain exactly what powers 17s mods have as it can vary between forums but generally they have access to the moderation queue and can: edit/hide posts, move/merge/hide/lock/sticky threads and give out warnings and suspensions.

Administrators also have control over the forum itself and can create/remove/change subforums and can change a lot of details about how the site works including restrictions on users, user-groups, profiles, posts, signatures, polls, mods. Basically they can do just about anything ;)

Oh, I should probably answer the questions raised in this thread.

How do usually pick your staff?

Jokes of Hemalurgy aside, we look for people as we trawl through the forums. There's a thread in our staff forum where staff discuss potential people, and we discuss it at length. There's a lot we look for in a mod, and though the spam is annoying, we don't come at it in an angle of "hey we need this time slot filled." We look for other qualities, like competence and the person fits in with the staff (namely, that their vision mostly aligns with our own).

Also, even considering a mod in the time slot, bashing bots isn't a full time job. Killing bots is very simple; merely a button click away to destroy them... Someone just needs to hit the button. Point is, we would promote based on merit, not time slot, as the spam is not a sufficient reason in and of itself to promote.

Surely a stockpile of Breath would be more useful - making a Lifeless and commanding it to destroy spam all day/night.

Yes, but then you don't get to see the life drain out of their eyes as their love magic fails them. It's just not the same.

Moderators have two roles: they are eyes and ears of the staff, and then they are functionaries that have the general abilities you list. Though, we don't have them do disciplining anymore. Global moderators are expanded moderators, and have the complete forum-side toolset to do things. We also let them speak on behalf of the staff for matters of disciplining or other things. Basically, same as moderator, but with more trust.

Administrators can do everything. There's Josh, Mi'ch, and I who get total access to everything on the serverside and setup stuff. Other admins are now actually a lower tier (which we really need to make a new group for), where each of those administrators have their own section they are "in charge" of. For example, Will with graphics, Joe with the Wiki, and now Weiry with News/Database stuff. These admins have the same forum abilities and do get server access. Most don't use it extensively as they are not on the technology side of things. Administrators also obviously get to deal with disciplinary matters.

All staff get a voice about decisions, but the administrators are the trusted high council who really can shape the direction we go. Ultimate decisions come from Josh, Mi'ch, and I, and of those three, Josh is in charge. The three of us talk all the time to make fast decisions. I remember when we banned someone for being a total jerkwad literally within thirty minutes of him being a jerkwad. Who said committee decisions are not efficient? ;)

Ah, but when are you going to answer the Reputation Reform thread's questions. It's been so long....

So is this why some mods are green now?

Oh yeah. I do need to do that. I've been really busy, and admittedly, rehashing things I've already said is kind of not a task I am excited to do.

*Administrators. Simply to make the distinction with Josh, Mi'ch, and I, and the other more focused administrators more clear. See my post above for the explanation.

Bard, you might want to PM suggestions instead.
