ConQuesT Kansas City - 5/22/15

Vaidd

Recommended Posts

Brandon will be a Guest of Honor at ConQuesT 46 in Kansas City on Memorial Day weekend.  Although I haven't seen an announcement on his site, the con has Brandon's schedule here.  (And here's the full schedule for those who are curious.)

EDIT: Brandon's announcement of his schedule.

Will there be any 17th Sharders there besides me?  I'm not sure what I plan to ask Brandon, but I'm open to sufficiently interesting suggestions.

Also, I've never been to a con before.  This one only caught my interest because it's close and both Brandon and GRRM will be there. For those who have attended cons, what suggestions would you give to a "con newbie" to help me best enjoy the experience?

If you're not sure what to ask, feel free to ask something from the master list of Reckonerverse questions--asking any one of them would make a whole sub-community of Sanderfans adore you for all time. ;)

In any case, have fun. I envy people like you. :D

GRRM and Sanderson? Sounds like it'll be a blast.

I have a few big questions I've been sitting on, in rough descending order of interest:

  • Metals serve to shape the Investiture used in Allomancy into the different powers. Why can you do the same thing with the mist without any metals shaping the Investiture? Can the soul shape it without the metals?

  • Hemalurgic spikes are supposed to decay rapidly when out of a body, but Vin's earring was supposedly at near-full strength. How does that work?

  • If Investiture cannot be created or destroyed, why can a Feruchemist 'make' seemingly infinite amounts of it through metalminds?

  • Koloss are now different, and less monstrous. What technique did Sazed employ to accomplish this? Did he change Hemalurgy himself, did he teach the koloss a new place to put spikes, or what?

  • Why is Hoid’s color aura not noticed by anyone? Or does he not have one?

Here's a much bigger list with more boring questions:

Questions:

  • At what point is Investiture turned into an effect in Allomancy? When it goes through their soul, or when it goes through the burning metal? Or, why can you use Allomancy with the mist if the metal's molecular structure is what matters for determining a power?

  • If Investiture cannot be created or destroyed, why can a Feruchemist make seemingly infinite amounts of it through metalminds?

  • Was Hemalurgy itself changed to make koloss able to reproduce? Or, what’s going on there?

  • Why is Hoid’s color aura not noticed by anyone? Or does he not have one?

  • Do the Unmade require Investiture to live, like the Returned? If so, do they partially subsist off the souls of those they kill?

  • Why can Breath not power a Returned forever like it can an object?

  • Is the color aura of an Awakener them ‘leaking’ Breath like a Surgebinder leaks Stormlight?

  • Does Surgebinding work off-world?

  • How does Lift turn food into Stormlight? Is everything 'made' of Investiture in the cosmere?

    • Note - answered before, the mechanics of what she does is that she can metabolize food into ATP(?) or else get Investiture from it, but I’m more interested in whether the food itself is made of Investiture. Where does it come from?

  • If Taln held on to Jezrien’s Honorblade, would he get the sapphire eyes effect?

  • If a Herald died while bonded to a dead Shardblade, would they drop it or would they keep it for the next Desolation?

  • Hemalurgic spikes are supposed to decay rapidly when out of a body, but Vin's earring was supposedly at near-full strength. How does that work?

  • How far from Scadrial does an Allomancer have to travel physically before they can no longer draw on Preservation’s power to do Allomancy? Is there a limit? (Note: Low-priority, we know location doesn’t matter in the Spiritual, so it seems like it won’t actually have a limit.)

  • Would a Shardblade be able to cut the God King?

  • Why does Elend have more powerful Pushes than Vin? Is he burning through metals faster, gaining more Investiture per unit of metal burned, or using the Investiture he gets more efficiently than Vin?

  • Breath seems like it doesn’t run out like Stormlight. You Awaken something, and it lasts basically forever. But if you Lash something, the Lashing ends a short time later. Why does Stormlight run out and Breath not?

    • Note: this was asked, but we only got a paraphrased answer. Basically, the gist of it was that Breath was used up and turned into a different form, but recovered. Getting an exact transcription of an answer to this question would be great.

  • Is the Stormfather composed partly of Cultivation's Investiture?

  • If you had a gemheart, would it be possible to capture the Stormfather in it like you can do with spren? Is he too Invested to fit in such a small object?

  • Given that the AonDor's illusions apparently require a "full mental picture" of the thing you’re trying to create (by the Words of Radiance Ars Arcanum), it seems likely that Forgery similarly requires you to have a full mental picture of what you're trying to do when you carve a soulstamp. With this in mind, how can one decode a stamp like Frava's Forger was apparently planning on spending a few years doing? Or is there not much of a mental component to Forgery?

  • If you used Stormlight to Awaken, would you drain color or create frost? (Note: RAFO’d before, but he may be willing to answer it this time around.)

  • Does Surgebinding drain heat like Awakening drains color?

  • Why did Kaladin use a hammer to break Szeth's shoulder rather than a Blade to kill him? (Note: nitpicky)

  • Can Mistborn draw power from Preservation via burning a metal and just hold it to get a Stormlight-like effect, not filtering it through a metal to create an effect?

  • What would a "transformative Cognitive entity", like Roshar’s spren, look like on Scadrial?

  • If Ruin never Invested Scadrial, could fabrials be made on Roshar? (Note: is a question on whether fabrials are a use of Hemalurgy basically.)

  • Hoid comes out of the “emerald pools” on the Horneater Peaks. Why did he choose that pool in particular rather than a different one?

    • (RAFO’d - ‘making assumptions’) Hoid went through Cultivation's Shardpool to get to Roshar as opposed to Honor's. Yet, he notes he never got along well with Cultivation. Why did he choose her Shardpool rather than Honor's?

  • Could a Hemalurgic spike be soulstamped to grant a different power than the one it stole? Would this be limited to powers in the same “set”, like a spike granting Allomancy could be converted to granting a different Allomantic power, but not a Feruchemical one?

  • Would a Returned who bonded an Honorblade have their eye color change when they summon it? Would a Herald? (Note: he’s said he has the answer in his notes, but didn’t know it offhand before.)

  • Because the Seon bond is similar to a Nahel bond, it seems that Passing a Seon should require a wounded spirit on the part of the person who is going to receive the Seon. Is this true? How are Seons Passed?

  • If a non-Windrunner Surgebinder summoned Jezrien's Honorblade, what color eyes would they get? A blend? Different colors for each eye? (Note: RAFO’d before.)

  • Kaladin is out in a highstorm and his Stormlight reserves burst alight. Why does he not keep getting Invested until he explodes? Is it harder for the Stormlight to keep entering him, like trying to compress more and more stuff into a small box? Does he unconsciously keep himself in equilibrium by expelling Stormlight as the storm infuses him?

  • Why are there not ten different colors of light eyes on Roshar? Shouldn’t there be red eyes and pink eyes and ‘diamond’ eyes?

  • Shallash, the Lightweaver’s Herald, has light violet eyes, but she says she doesn’t have a Shardblade. Is this related to her being a Herald?

  • Would the screaming Eshonai hears go away if she unbonded her Shardblade?

  • What color are Nalan’s/Darkness' eyes?

  • Each world seems to have a material that Investiture 'sticks' easily to. Nalthis has life, Roshar has gems, Scadrial has metal. What word should we use for it?

  • The Metallic Arts are from Preservation and Ruin. There's three magic systems there, but there's only one magic system from Devotion and Dominion. Does the number of magic systems on a planet have something to do with how well the Intents of the Shards on it 'mesh', or perhaps how much they conflict?

  • Would a Parshman who received multiple Breaths become more ‘sentient’, like a listener bonded to a spren?

  • Is the woman bordering the chart at the back of TWoK intended to represent Cultivation?

  • Could a Hemalurgic spike steal one Surges? Or do you have to steal the spren bond?

  • Can a spren be Hemalurgically spiked? Is this like how modern fabrials work?

  • If two Mistborn of the same-strength had a Mistborn child, would the child be weaker Allomantically? How much weaker, mathematically?

  • How would Hemalurgic decay affect a Shardblade stolen with Hemalurgy?

  • Does Shardplate regrow by Soulcasting air to metal, does it covert Stormlight directly into Invested metal, or what’s going on there?

  • What happens when you put multiple competing Soulstamps on one thing? Like a stamp that says a table was well-cared for and a stamp that says the table was neglected.

  • How does Hemalurgically stealing a spren bond work? Could the stolen spren break the bond because by using Hemalurgy you’re breaking one of the ideals that Surgebinders swear?

  • Does having something stolen from you with a Hemalurgic spike have any serious implications for your afterlife?

  • Were the children of original Mistborn noticeably weaker than the original Mistborn? Like, to the point where they could affect half as many people when Soothing? Mathematically, how does the power dropoff work over generations of Allomancers?

  • Are the Mistings in Alloy of Law noticeably weaker than an equivalent Misting in Final Empire? Has the rate of power loss with each generation of Allomancers slowed?

  • Will the power loss of Allomancers over generations ever result in such incredibly weak Mistings that they will be like Alendi, with incredibly weak abilities? How many years will it take?

  • Is a child of two Allomancers the same strength as their parents (assuming their parents are equal strength)?

  • What difference does Allomantic strength make when using gold/electrum, if any?

  • Were Preservation/Sazed limited to only swapping out Temporal metals?

  • Does the Allomantic Table basically 'set' the types of new natural Mistings that can come about?

  • Could Honor/Cultivation swap out Surges like Preservation did metals?

  • Does Marsh have the ability to burn Allomantic gold?

  • What state is the Investiture gained from burning metals in? Can it even be classified as gaseous/liquid/solid?

  • Can you make a Hemalurgically charged spike from a plant?

  • Can you Snap if you’re not on Scadrial?

I'd appreciate any of them being asked if you find them interesting!

Agreed. Have a blast! :D

As far as Reckonersverse questions go—we don't expect them to take precedence over Cosmere questions. The Reckonersverse consists of a single planet, while the Cosmere is an entire universe. We Reckoners fans (and RPers) aren't asking for our questions to suddenly become TEH MOST IMPORTANT THING EVUR GUISE!!!!1!!!!11!!! because we know that Cosmere questions are important to Cosmere fans (and, to be honest, I'm more than a bit curious about the answers myself). All we want is for Sharders who attend signings, who want to help us acquire background information for our RP, to ask one or two questions from our list, and then the rest can go to the Cosmere. We're as curious about our favorite world as you are about yours, and one or two answers would help us out more than you can know. :)

I'm afraid all my Reckoners questions are most definitely RAFO-bait so I'll just wait for Calamity instead of asking Brandon. Like Moogle, I have a list of Cosmere questions ready for these Q&A events. They're in the third part of my sig below. If you just need one question, though, here's one I'd suggest:

Is there a force carrier particle (or a variety of force carrier particles) for Investiture in the Cosmere, like how the photon is the force carrier particle for light? In other words, is there a quantum of Investiture?

If that is too weird for you, I'll settle for this:

I'll have to come back and browse this thread before the signing on Saturday.  So far, here are the questions near the top of my personal list (in no particular order).

Reckonerverse

(is this seriously the best name we can come up with?)

  • What's the approximate ratio of Epics to "normals?"  Is that number increasing, decreasing, or staying roughly the same?

(Firefight spoilers)

  • Can an epic who has "faced his fear" be gifted powers?  If he answers, this should either support or debunk the various "David is secretly an Epic" theories.

Cosmere

  • Can Parshmen reproduce without entering mateform?  If so, is there a reason Given that other forms are capable of reproduction, why do the Listeners view mateform as being essential?
  • What is the significance, if any, of the heavy white lines that connect some (but not all) of the Orders in the surgebinding chart in WoK?
  • Will the update of Elantris include a description and/or picture of the chasm line on an Aon that comes close to making sense?  Any chance of sharing those on your site?
  • I may also ask about how allomancy (in particular steel and iron) gets along with Newton's Laws as briefly discussed in this thread.  If I do, I'll ask about the point Moogle made about not being able to accelerate small bits of metal to hypersonic speed (because Vin totally would have done that if it were possible).  Does the effect depend on surface area, like spraying a jet of water against an object, or there some other limiting factor?  Either way, there must be some coefficient to account for the allomancer's "strength."

Cosmere-ish

  • Is there any chance of publishing the full-color map of Roshar in poster size?  It would look awesome in my living room.

Naturally, what I think is interesting enough to ask about is different from everyone else.  If you don't like my choices, you'll have to come down to the con and ask questions yourself.  :P

On that Parshmen question, Slaveform is clearly capable of reproduction and this bit from the AMA might be relevant.

Yes, but not in the majority of their forms.

What is the significance, if any, of the heavy white lines that connect some (but not all) of the Orders in the surgebinding chart in WoK?

For this one it is important to remember that that chart is not technically depicting the Orders though we generally use it that way, it's a philosophical representation of the Essences and Surges (i.e. the elements and fundamental forces) known as the "Double-eye of the Almighty".  So it's less "There's a connection between the Windrunners and the Lightweavers" and more "There's a connection between Zephyr and Blood".

Thanks for clarifying that for me.  It's good to know what that chart actually shows, although it wouldn't actually affect my question, because I plan to phrase it along the lines of "What's the deal with these here lines in this here picture?"  :)

I guess I'll join the crowd and drop in my mondo-list:

If a Forger had access to Breath could she make essence marks on living beings permanent? Or make the marks last outside the regional area that they normally would?

--

Are "ideals" in the Spiritual Realm responsible for why drawing together a few lines into a symbol on Sel corresponds to specific magical meanings, like how it's "known" by the Dor that the lines making up AonAon represent Arelon?

How broadly can a time-bubbler control the attributes of their bubbles at the moment of casting? Could Wayne make his bubble speed up time 1/10th as much in order to make his bubble 10x bigger, or the inverse? Or some smaller range?

Is there any difference between the healing that Feruchemical Gold and held-Stormlight can accomplish? Can use of Regrowth accomplish more than either?

Are there such things as "Feruchemical savants"? Was Miles one, a "savant" in Feruchemical Gold?

How long does it take before a newly-made chair starts thinking of itself as a singular object, rather than as just individual components?

If a bunch of pieces of wood in the depths of space (without anyone watching) happened to drift into and stick to each other to form a chair, would that object ever begin to think of itself as a "chair", or even as a singular object?

Since we know that time bubbles have frames of reference, what happens if you have person that's standing still while a bubble moves through him?
-Ex. Say you've got a bubble sticking out the side of a train that's going North at 60mph, versus Bob standing by the tracks. So far as the bubble is concerned, Bob is going 60mph South, while the train is stock still: so, when they intersect, does Bob suddenly find himself lurching South at 60mph until the bubble has passed; to end up a few feet up-track of where he started, all without his having to move a muscle? If not, what does happen?

----

Do time bubbles "distend" around non-included objects? So if you have a big train going by that's not going to be part of a cadmium bubble, will someone on the opposite side of the tracks still be included in the bubble?
-If any living thing touching a time bubble is affected by it, and the occupants of a train that's not affected by a time bubble are also not affected, then are those occupants still "touching" the bubble?

Is the "jostling" projectiles suffer as they leave speed bubbles mathematically modelable, or entirely arbitrary?

----
FORMS:

>>Are "ideals" in the Spiritual Realm the reason why "instinctive Awakening" works, or why specific Command phrases are "discovered" rather than Awakeners being capable of formulating new ones out of whole cloth?
--Probably "no" based on CHI answer, might need to narrow down on

-----

Does someone healing soul wounds have to look outside themselves for a "template" to heal back to?
-Evaded last time this was asked

:Steel Ministry

Could a full-Feruchemist + full-Mistborn have been bred right after Rashek doled out the Lerasium, but before the breeding program? Or would the most you could get be a twinborn?

Did the first Feruchemists use Lerasium to get their powers? If so, was it by "tapping" something out of the Lerasium; making Lerasium both the metal anyone can burn and the one that anyone can tap from?
-Alt: A charged metalmind can be treated as a new allomantic metal. If you alloyed a charged metalmind with lerasium, would burning the alloy that make you a ferring, or a 'charged gold burner'?

Did Sazed ever try to store/tap using Kelsier's eleventh metal?

---

Is it possible/practical for an Oracle to get more utility out of Electrum then Vin and Elend did? So does the Allomancy enhance a misting's mind to the point where he could actually glean useful information out of his many future-shadows?
-If so, is it more in the range of "oh future-me who went left gets shot" versus "reading my future-selves' body language, it looks like talking with Mrs. Peabody might not be a good idea"?

:Post-WoR:

What's the significance of "Zahel's" instructions to Adolin on how to command his Blade when he throws it and the way that Awakening works? Is this some Cosmere-fundamental, or just a quirk of Vasher's particular expertise?

---

Does metal have to be in an allomancer's stomach for a leacher to effect it? Or just inside a human? Or just inside a living thing? If Inquisitors could theoretically burn their spikes does that mean a leacher could also affect them?

Could Ruin puppeteer any lifeless that had a single hemalurgic spike implanted?

What would happen to a Kandra with two sets of Blessing spikes (like TenSoon) who was bisected such that one set ended up in each half?

---

:RAFO Bait:
What is Lerasium's Feruchemical effect?

------

Do Cognitive aspects generally include people's clothing to some extent?
-To what extend to do people's Cognitive selves include their clothing?

Why did Jasnah's combat-soulcasting of the alley thugs affect the clothing of some of them but not of others?

---

How, exactly, does Hemalurgic decay work for Feruchemy? Do Inquisitors have a cap on how much they can store at a time, or do they "waste" Health when they store (so they'd be lying around at 80% health but only storing 10%, for instance), or do they draw it out less efficiently than real Feruchemists?

Why do new wounds healed by Feruchemical Gold sometimes heal into scars and sometimes not? Like how Kar had facial scars right after Vin arrowed him, versus Miles not having any at all?
http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/4258-questions-for-seattle-signing-1014/page-2#entry67127

---

Are Feruchemical attributes stored in the Physical metal of metalminds, or in their Spiritual aspects?

Is there any meaningful difference between the metalminds of a Feruchemists who stores 10% weight for 10 hours in the first metalmind, and then 100% for 1 hour in a second metalmind?

Would an embedded Brass metalmind melt at high temperatures? What about one that's completely buried in the skin?
-Me: Probably not: Water in your stomach oughtn't to boil away

If Dalinar were a Feruchemist, would he be able to tap a metalmind (in either world) while experiencing one of his visions?

Does the Blessing of Presence help a Kandra against takeover by emotional Allomancy, or only against Ruin?
-Me: Probably both.

Could you please explain how Feruchemical brass goes about being a "Cognitive" metal? I know you had to retcon it in, and had originally intended it to be a physical metal, but how does it work Realmatically as Cognitive?

I've gotten my fair share of answers for myself as of late, so feel free to pick and choose if any catch your interest but no pressure.

After a panel at ConQuestKC 2015, I asked Brandon if Sazed will resurrect Kelsier at some point in the future, since Brandon has pointed out that Kelsier's soul has stuck around and is still tied to Scadrial.

His response was "Sazed is not going to resurrect Kelsier.  Keep your eyes open."  And there was a verbal emphasis on Sazed's name.

My takeaway from this is that someone (at this point I'm thinking Hoid) will be resurrecting Kelsier eventually.

Totally random thought, but I'm wondering what AIs or machine intelligences in the cosmere would look like.  Like what if the final Mistborn trilogy, the sci-fi one, had scientific advancements with mechanically allomancy that allowed them to tether cognitive shadows like Kelsier to the physical realm.  I dunno, haven't thought this through at all, but just had this mental image of Kelsier as like the AI consciousness of an allomantic spaceship.  Anyone ever watch that sci-fi show ANDROMEDA with Kevin Sorbo, where the ships all had AIs who were called 'the ships made flesh'?  Something like that.

Anyway, sorry to derail, suddenly just super obsessed with the idea of sci-fi allomancy being used to resurrect Kelsier or Identity metalminds used to give machines or spaceships some kind of additional human consciousness or realmatic advancements leading to artificial spren, like boosting inanimate objects' or forces' cognitive sense of self until they develop actual sapiency.

*rushes off to ponder these things in depth*

Given Brandon's previously jokingly hinted at the possibility before (and the method being Hemalurgy!), I agree that signs point towards Kelsier's return at some point now. Thanks for the report!

I just got through the signing line. Since it was a mile long, I only asked about the Reckoners. The ratio of Epics to normal folks is about 1 in 10,000. Brandon then clarified, without prompting, that was pre-Calamity population and the ratio is much higher now because so many normal people died. He then gave an example of Newcago, which has about 1000 Epics in a population of 250,000, so in that particular case the ratio is 1:250. (He didn't say, but I'd expect that to vary from place to place depending on the local politics.)
