Am I the only one who cried at the end of Elantris?

I liked him.

I'm the logic type too. Passion is not something I can describe well because I'm not sure I've felt it. He was doing what he thought would save the populace in his own way, and in the end found himself achieving that by abandoning all he stood for to, of all things a logically minded person could've done, help the losing team.

I truly think he finally found something to be passionate about in his last moments, which is what saddened me about his passing.

I didn't cry, but after reading that scene I did feel the need to put the book down and have a respectful silence for a little while.

I love the way his feelings for Sarene develop over the course of the book.  It's so subtly done!  Someone once said in a book jacket quote (about Mistborn I think) that Brandon has a great understanding of how love takes root in the human heart, and I definitely see that here.  In fact, I think Hrathen's feelings for Sarene are one of the most believable examples of romance in the Cosmere for me.

Definitely a great ending, with the perfect emotional punch.

First off, major spoilers

**Continue at your own risk**

Ok, Hrathen's funeral scene got me. That was probably the most worthy farewell/death scene ever. All he ever wanted to be was Arelon's savior, and he was, just not in the way he thought. I actually cried when Serene gave her speech. That was the best ending I believe for any of Brandon's series so far. Well, then again, the Hero of Ages was AMAZING, and Warbreaker was pretty awesome. Still, I think it was an amazing, tear jerking, and respectful end to a complex character. But seriously, was I the only one? Let me know below :D

Yes, I cried when Serene gave her speech at Hrathen's funeral as well - especially when she mentioned about him being Arelon's savior. You're definitely not the only one. :D

I cried too. And what got to me the most was how his arc came full circle. The first words we read when we're introduced to Hrathen is "None of Arelon's people greeted their savior when he arrived." And then at the end Serene talks about how he was their savior. That scene probably got to me more than the end of The Well of Ascension did.

While I liked Elantris, it was the one book by Brandon that I had a harder time with some of the dialogue and character emotions.  I always attributed it to this being his first published work and not quite as mature writing as later works.  I'm glad that other people didn't have that experience though.  I should re-read it again (for probably the 5th time) trying to be more invested.

Finished reading (well listening) to Elantris for the first time earlier today. I listen to audio books while at work instead of music.

I have to say my eyes started to well up and had to make a effort to look like it was due to allergies, didn't want to make a scene in the office XD

Granted they never welled like they did at the end of the Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks

Yes, I cried. Like a baby. And then I cried like a little girl. My mom was a little disturbed when she heard me crying over a book (she's not an avid reader, so she wouldn't understand), and then said, "I think that Brandon Sanderson is a bad influence on you." If that's true, then he's the best bad influence ever.

If I was Hrathen, I'd probably fall in love with Sarene too.

Okay, who downvoted this? It's an honest opinion, and he isn't even bashing with it.

I don't think I cried, but I did find that ending very poignant.  I agree that Elantris is one of Brandon's weakest published books (and if you look more closely, you find out that Hrathen's ending was added later in the writing process; the original version was far more geeky and less personal), but that's not the same as saying I don't like it.  Hrathen was easily the best character in it, and that he got a kind of redemption and resurrection really got to me.
