So for English I need to write a persuasive essay, and I can do it on any topic, so I figured I'd write about who would win in a fight Kaladin or Vin. One I thought this would be a fun thing to do,and two it gives me an excuse to reread way of kings + words of radiance, and the mistborn series. Your thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

If you are worried about spoilers you could always do Kelsier vs Szeth, as it wouldn't be much of a spoiler as they are both pretty bad chull from the off.

As for Kaladin vs Vin, that's a tough one. Kal hasn't quite got to grasps with his abilities yet, so I think Vin could take him. I'm wondering if his Latchings would be more powerful than Vin's pushes when she tosses a pouch worth of boxings in his face. Either way it sounds like a fun topic to write about. Wish I had Brandon's work to write about back when I was at school. I envy you.

Well, since she can hop around with pushes and hoover it can probably output at least equal to if not greater than Scadrial gravity. Though the lashed object will resist the push due to the stormlight, and multiple lashings will be an issue.

I just realized that the planet they are fighting on can potentially throw off their movements due to relative gravity differences.

If the magic more or less equals out and there is not blatant advantage (like Kal being able to lash Vin in the clouds and juggle her there while they fight)...then Vin wins easy. Vins just more of a killer than Kal.

If there is a fatal magic flaw...it would likely favor Kal (lashings, Syl's weapon/armor formations, etc).

Maybe it can be a third planet where neither have knowledge of how it works? They have the metal/stormlight they brought with them. No more, no less. Brawl in the streets? Probably Vin. Plain fight where they both prepare? That's a little harder.

Then it depends on whether Nahel bonds function properly beyond Greater Rosharan space. If Seons and presumably Nightblood can gain some form of grantable power in Roshar then it stands to reason that spren might actually lose that trait outside of Roshar.

Of course it can probably be hacked to work regardless, but that requires dabbling in other magics they don't normally have.

Well, if that were the case, then it really becomes a matter of outlasting your opponent's powers, which would definitely favor Vin. Stormlight runs out way faster than any metals burn, except maybe atium. So, during that time, Kaladin wouldn't really be able to die, his Stormlight healing his wounds, and Vin would most likely be able to survive indefinitely against Kaladin with her metals.

Of course, you'd also have to factor in weapons. If Kaladin has Syl the Shardblade/spear/whatever, then things get a bit more interesting. Pewter does some amazing stuff, but it won't allow you to shrug off a Shardblade wound. With Syl, Kaladin would also be able to block coins easily, and, of course, have access to a dizzying variety of killing tools.

In the end, though, in this setting, I'm placing my bets on Vin. Kaladin's Stormlight would run out too fast.

One thing interesting though- would Kaladin's lashings affect Vin's Steelpushes?

Lashings work by manipulating an object's spiritual connection to the planet it's currently connected to. It seems likely that since allomancers that are heavier can Push harder, allomancers Push by copying their own spiritual connection and placing it on metal in a specific direction, (which is basically Lashing, just limited to metallic objects).

So what would happen if Kaladin made Vin "weightless"? If he made the gravitational influence on her zero? Would that leave her unable to Push and Pull?

If that happens, then Kaladin would almost certainly win. He would lash her weightless in the middle of the air, and then Vin couldn't do anything stuck 20 feet in the air with no good way to move.

Well, she would still have mass, so they shouldn't stop working, just really throw her off balance and most likely cause her to push herself outside of her range by accident, causing her to drift away into space. Of course if Kaladin gets close enough to lash her he could just throw her up in the sky on his own or summon Syl in her chest, so that wouldn't really be necessary.

Didn't we see Wax still pushing on things fine when he was weightless?
