Hello, 17th Shard! I'll be brief, direct, and to the point. No one likes an off-topic, meandering first paragraph, right? Why, just the other day I was reading a topic and thinking "Gee, some people just can't seem to hold a thought..."

Ahem.

Here's the issue: my family and I enjoy viewing various television programs every night. It helps us unwind, relax, and avoid the Almighty-cursed proposition of having a conversation of an evening. (We get along just fine, but no one quite feels like chit-chatting at the end of a day.) Unfortunately, here lately we have completely run out of quality entertainment material, leaving us woefully without a show every evening.

We'd appreciate some good recommendations for television shows, if it's not too much trouble. We avoid shows with excessive gore or sexual content, and would prefer clean, family shows. We're fond of Doctor Who, Firefly, Once Upon a Time, and clean sitcoms such as Corner Gas. We've been known to indulge in well-written cartoons like Phineas and Ferb, but they're not generally our first choice.

The 17th Shard is a well-versed community when it comes to entertainment, so I look forward to seeing what recommendations you have. Thanks in advance. :)

Stargate SG-1 (though there's sexual content in the first episode, its clear the whole way through after that), Stargate Atlantis, Castle is very good but there can be a lot of sexual content, though none of it gets too too bad (about the same as Firefly). There is also the occasional blood scene but hey its a cop show with murder scenes.

OH MY GOODNESS THEY SHOULD MAKE A LEGION SHOW.

Well those were just some of my favourite shows, excluding Dr Who and Firefly.

Edit: Also, I read your tags...

The first season of Agents of SHIELD is on Netflix.  If you decide to try it out, don't give up after the first two episodes.  The second episode is my least favorite.  It's predictable and uninspired.  However, the show starts getting better and better, and by the time you get to the second half of the season, it is rocketing full-speed toward an amazing finish.

Hey OP,

Avatar: The Last Airbender - I'd second this one. It's a lovely show full of character growth, friendships, action and fun.

Friday Night Lights - This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I really thought it was an incredible series. Focuses on the lives of a Texas high school football coach, his family, and a few football players and other teenagers. Exceptional drama. The first episode just sucked me right in.

Sherlock - By some of the Doctor Who guys (in case you haven't seen it yet).

Legend of the Seeker - Fun, pulpy series based on the Sword of Truth novels. By the Xena people.

The West Wing - Office drama set in the White House. Thought provoking and engaging.

Top Gear? - Just discovered this. Loads of fun.

How about Warehouse 13? It's a pretty fun-albeit, often lightweight- show that doesn't contain much via the way of gore or sex. You know the ending of Raiders of the Lost Ark?

A television show built around that place.

I like it, though I will admit it's very lightweight, and sometimes uneven. Still, the cast are always fun to watch, and I think the concept itself is really neat...

Oh, and I recommend Ponies, because... you know. Ponies.

#bestshow

(Oh, and just a word of warning... I actually sort-of agree with EnaMai. I actually kind of enjoyed the Legend of the Seeker, which is surprising since I hate the books it's based on... I just feel I should warn you that, while there isn't anything sexually or gore-ily explicit, there is an episode or two which... toes the line, at least.)

I gave you an upvote solely on the basis that you watch Corner Gas. That show is my all time favourite sit com and precious few know about it.

I would try Sherlock, MIMYM, Scorpion, Forever, Arrow, The Flash, Star Wars: Clone Wars (If you're okay with a cheesy first season), The Lying Game was good enough.

Stay away from PLL. It sucks. A lot.

Also, an upvote for the guy that said SG-1 and SG Atlantis. I love them with a lot of my heart. I like SG Universe a lot, too.

That show is brilliant.:D If I had a nickel for every time I mimicked Oscar Leroy, I could pay the salaries of every jackchull in the state. :P

Excellent shows:

  • Sherlock
An amazing adaptation of the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes in modern day London. If you've read Arthur Conan Doyle, you'll recognize some of the characters and plot points, but not all - the show is not a translation, it's an adaptation. It's only three seasons, three episodes each, about 90 minutes per episode (so very unusual format), with a fourth season coming sometime in the future, but it's absolutely the first thing you should watch. Then, if you are suffering from the common Sherlock withdrawal, you could try watching Elementary; I haven't seen it myself, but I hear it's another solid (though not quite as solid) adaptation of Holmes' cases.
  • Fringe
If you want to watch something that's over instead, Fringe is one of my all-time favorites. It's 5 seasons, and they all tie into one big plot in the end (though some episodes / seasons feel out of place until you've seen the entire show). It's a classic, and one with a fairly few shaky moments.

Good shows:

  • Arrow & The Flash
While (mostly) independent shows, I am putting them together because they are very similar in quality and themes.
  • Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and (soon) Marvel's Agent Carter
If you like Marvel's movies, Agents of Shield should be a fun watch - seeing a few familiar faces, hearing some familiar names, things like that. If you didn't like the movies... well, this is still a solid show, Marvel doesn't try to shove its mythos down your throat, it's mostly trivia
  • Gotham
I mostly watch this for all the namedrops - seeing a ton of Batman characters before they become who they became (the Poison Ivy, for example, is a creepy kid that lives in a house that's more vegetation than house). It's fun if you don't poke at its plot (and some characters) too hard.
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender & Avatar: The Legend of Korra
TLA is much more geared towards kids (though I enjoyed much of it), but TLoK definitely dances around the YA border. The show tackles some really annoying problems with TV shows these days, and it tackles them well (while not explicit about it, Avatar is really good at painting a world where equality is a thing). I plan to buy copies of the entire show, abduct kids, and force them to watch it so they become good people when they grown up.

Alright shows:

  • Grimm
I've always liked the idea of taking a classical story (the Grimm Fairy Tales in this case) and adding a twist to it - putting all of the Grimm monsters in a modern setting, for example. It's not quite good enough to rank to escape this list and climb to the one above, but it doesn't need much
  • The Librarians
The first episode of this struck me as a little Whovian in its tone, so you might like it more than I do (I have a number of beefs with Doctor Who...). It's a very light, casual kind of show - it doesn't try to be serious very much, and there is certain charm in that.

I really want to recommend Orphan Black, because it's an amazingly brilliant show, but it's not quite clean enough for the entire family. There is some bad language and the occasional butt and (mostly implicit) sex scene.

You watch Corner Gas?! Awesome!

That is an amazing show.

I went to the actual gas station once and have even met quite a few of the actors. One of them came into my Grandparent's store once.

Oh, my name is also in the credits of the movie.

Does it sound like I'm showing off?

Oh well, I probably am.

-There isn't much of Firefly, which means it won't sustain you for long. But it's a a great space Western with characters to love. there's no gore, sexual content, and is something an entire family can enjoy.

-The Last Airbender presents amazing art, voice-acting, stories, but most importantly presents some extremely crucial points that anyone watching it can understand. It was structured with the intended audience of children and teenagers, so it's pretty clean.

-Saturday Night Live, of course. It's always good to end the night on a humorous note. There's so much of it, you could probably spend months catching up on this, and Improviganza. You could also look into variety shows, sketch shows and things in this vein.

I concur with those who suggested Avatar: the Last Airbender. If you haven't watched it, do it now. Monk is another of my all-time favorite shows, although it's no longer on Netflix, which is sad.

I've also recently come across Gilmore Girls, which I personally have found to be pretty fantastic. It's an excellent mix of comedy and drama, with brilliant writing, great repartee, and truly outstanding characters. Just thought I'd put that out there, it's definitely worth a try.

If you're looking for one-shots to tide you over, Wonderfalls is a strange, obscure, and completely amazing little show.  It's only 13 episodes, but they tell a perfect story arc and wrap up with a satisfying conclusion.  It's beautiful, funny, and poignant in all the right places.  The discs on the DVD set also look like the old viewfinder cell circles.

Oh, and it has the actress who plays Kaylee in Firefly on the last several episodes. :D  Also, it has Lee Pace being snarky and slightly doofy.  It's an amusing contrast from his more recent roles in The Hobbit and Guardians of the Galaxy.
