This is the type of deal companies like Tor do in order to open doors to more profitable sales in the future. Apple gets a popular book on their "free" list to help them sell iPhones, iPads and Macs while Tor introduces Brandon to new readers and probably gets a better deal when they sell the next releases on iTunes.
