  1. Rereading Mistborn, and I'm trying to figure this one out, no idea if it's already been brought up, the most recent post that was only semi-related that I found through a quick search was from 5 years ago: https://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/58783-why-cant-kandra-get-near-inquisitors/?do=findComment&comment=553393. There's a few cases of TLR Soothing and I'm trying to figure out how he didn't take over some of the crew, namely OreSeur directly after the death of Kelsier, and Marsh when TLR hit him and Vin with a massive blast of Soothing at the final confrontation. Was something else going on or was this a plot hole? For OreSeur maybe the Soothing wasn't focused enough to nail him (I assume he had to be close enough to make sure to recover Kelsier's body and couldn't feel TLR coming), but unless Marsh was flaring Copper for all that he was worth, I don't see how he could have resisted TLR. Okay, maybe Marsh had extremely high emotions going, but still, it seems odd. Am I missing something, or should this not have gone as it did?
  2. I’m currently re-reading mistborn for the second time and I was wondering what’s up with the Lord ruler like sometimes he makes smart decisions like the vaults or how he kept Atium from ruin but then other times he makes really bad and dumb decisions like the final empire in general it literally says it in that book that Ellen has that it should be better than it is and for a another example he made it so the skaa what have a bigger population than the nobles which in my opinion basically made it inevitable that they would rise up and actually win you could make the excuse that ruin was influencing him and I feel like that does make sense for later in his rule but I also feel like that doesn’t excuse the bad decisions he made earlier in his rule idk does this make sense to you guys?
  3. I recall reading in the Mistborn books that Rashek was manipulated over time by Ruin, causing him to commit worse and worse atrocities. However, he didn't have any Hemalurgic spikes to allow for manipulation, and he didn't seem to be completely unstable, so that made me think about how he could be manipulated by Ruin then. It is my theory then, that Ruin was able to manipulate him because Rashek needed to burn large amounts of Atium to stay alive, Connecting him to Ruin by suffusing himself with the Shard's essence. That's my idea, anyway.
  4. It is said in this WoB that the Lord Ruler had Hemalurgic spikes. It got me thinking, why would the Lord Ruler want Hemalurgic spikes in himself? Wouldn’t that just open himself up to Ruin’s influence more? Plus, he already has all of the powers of the Metallic Arts, so why would he even want them? Here are a few ideas I had to explain why he would do this. 1. It may be that he had a Hemalurgic spike granting him Feruchemical gold. Even though he could already heal using his own Feruchemical compounding, he would still be subject to having his natural ability stolen by someone else via Hemalurgy. If he had another source granting him the ability to tap his goldminds though, he could survive the spiking and then use his health reserves to repair the damage done to him. This seems like the most logical ability he would have given himself, because of it would help secure his personal safety. 2. He may have somehow given himself the Blessing of Stability to aid in preventing insanity due to his unnaturally long life and the psychological pressures he was facing. I’m pretty sure he didn’t do this one because it should have warped him into a Hemalurgic construct, like a Koloss, but the benefit of such an enhancement would have been tempting to someone in a position like his. Not only that, but he had a intimate understanding of Hemalurgy due to his ascension, so if anyone could have found a way to bypass the mutating side-effects of Hemalurgically enhanced attributes, it would have been Rashek. 3. He gave himself enhanced Allomantic Soothing powers or Allomantic Steel powers. This would help explain why he was such a powerful Soother, or why he was able to push of trace metals in glass and stone, but he likely could have achieved these effects even without Hemalurgic spikes, since he had already made himself such a powerful Allomancer by using the Well of Ascension. He might have just done it to pull off these impressive effects with marginally less effort, seeing as how he seemed either too lazy or too prideful to kill people himself most of the time.
  5. Okay, now I want to mention that I’m pretty sure that the Unsealed Metalmind that granted all powers that we see in The Bands of Mourning were created by Kelsier, acting as the Sovereign, not the Lord Ruler. However, that’s not to say that the Metalminds that the Lord Ruler possessed weren’t Unsealed either. In The Bands of Mourning, the characters questioned why the Lord Ruler would have wanted to turn his bracers into Unsealed Metalminds, as that could have given someone else his powers. However, he could have done this because he feared getting Hemalurgically spiked. If his bracers really were Unsealed Metalminds, then even if he had his Feruchemical gold stolen away Hemalurgically, he could have tapped the Unsealed Metalminds to regain the power (of course he could probably have just Allomantically burned a goldmind that he’d already filled, but still). Additionally, he may have been okay with someone else gaining his power if he were to perish. We see that he did try to prepare humanity for Ruin, even if he died, so I don’t think it’s that far-fetched an idea to think that he wanted to give one last bit of an edge to whoever would have survived his death. Plus, no one even knew about Unsealed Metalminds at the time, and you can’t tap them without knowing that you can tap them first. I certainly could be wrong, and Rashek very likely didn’t make Unsealed Metalminds, but slight as it is, I think that there is still a possibility.
  6. Spoiler for Bands of Mourning and Secret History follow: Okay, I wanted to ask whether Kelsier intended people to understand him as the Lord Ruler when he went to Southern Scadrial, or whether that was never intended, and it was only a misinterpretation on the part of Wax and company of what Allik was saying? I suspect Kelsier used the Lord Ruler as something of a model, but is it the case that like, if people from Northern Scadrial ever found out what he was doing down there, he actually intended them to think the Lord Ruler had somehow returned and saved them? I just want clarification on it, but I can't think of good keywords to try to get that specific answer out of WoBs. When I tried I got wayyyy too many that weren't directly relevant.
  7. So here is a description of what I think the Compounding powers should do (keep in mind that The Lord Ruler didn't have access to all of these) So with that, how did The Lord Ruler die? He could just fill himself full of metal (using bendalloy for actual nutrition)(doesn't work, wasn't found yet) and use Gold to heal from everything. He could keep the metals 'in himself' by somehow compounding allomancy. He could move super fast and use an immense weight to out Push (or Pull) anyone. He could think faster than everyone else at the time, stay awake forever, and forget his super-powerful soothing, he could just make everyone trust him more using Connection! So how did he die? I can only assume that Preservation’s / Ruin’s influence helped, but Preservation was mostly opposed to it in MB SH, and Ruin doesn’t have the mists like Preservation does, which Vin uses. Please explain.
  8. I have come to the conclusion that we are on the brink of technological breakthrough, where it is possible someone as invisible as the Lord ruler. The other powers may also be acquired (like strong field paramagnetic equipment). Anyways the basic powers for invisibility are of two components, no aging and near instantaneous healing. Instantaneous healing can be achieved by nanobotic immunity. A group of nanobots programmed to certain tasks such as 3d print cells of the body, immune cells, muscle cells. These nanobots are going to be floating around in the blood stream, the blood viscosity may be troublesome but manageable. A spear pierced right through the chest, the nanobots seal the wound instantaneously. I pull it out, the aorta is sealed shut brand new. Aging can be checked by gene modification. Nature already has the solution. NAKED MOLE RATS don't die of aging or cancer. Their gees can be forced expressed nd isolated and an the gene can be injected by various means. So, we are ready to hit the technological satisfaction. The end (for at least a thousand years I believe). PS Sorry for the long post, but I am a nerd in college and started reading the books. Being a medical student I came to my view scientifically. I didn't know where to post but accept this as an introduction post.
  9. In the Bands of Mourning, we hear the legends of the Lord Ruler’s bracers, endowing anyone bearing them with Mistborn and Feruchemist powers. A single pair of bracers. Obviously, we eventually find that the Bands are a real creation of Sovereign-Kelsier, a single, long, tapered piece of metal composed of carefully mixed metals. But I would like to talk about the Lord Ruler’s /actual/ bracers. Not all of them, as he wore many. His atium bracers. The special ones. Those bracers served as both a feruchemical storage and hemalurgic spikes. There are three things I find very interesting about them. First, Brandon had to know that any astute reader would doubt the Sovereign’s identity as the Lord Ruler, given that we know what Bracers he bore, and we know that his special ones, the atium bracers, would be unable to store other feruchemical traits, even given what we learned in the book early on re: F-Aluminum and F-Nicrosil. We know what his bracers were, and we know they don’t match the legends. Second, Vin and Elend sold the Lord Ruler’s atium bracers. Atium bracers that could only have ended up in the hands of Ruin’s inquisitors or burned by some Mistborn (barring somehow a Kandra contract or a Seer getting ahold of them.) And we don’t know what /burning/ a hemalurgic spike does, but that the results of such a thing, of effectively combining with someone else’s spiritual DNA could have crazy results. And these bracers were either repurposed by Ruin or burned by someone, more than likely. Third, we still don’t know what the Lord Ruler stored in those bracers. He had all 16 allomantic and feruchemical powers already, and he could have used either the well of ascension or nicrosil compounding to give himself such strength in allomancy as to need no hemalurgic boost, unless he was perhaps seeking a slight skill boost. Was he seeking the powers similar to a Kandra Blessing? Or something else entirely? in other words, there’s still some more to wonder about. I’ve tried to link this to Marsh’s feruchemical atium spike in the few minutes I’ve taken to write this, but I can’t see how he’d have made use of Rashek’s bracers, without any access to Rashek’s identity. Anyway, that about wraps up my ramblings.
  10. Or, more specifically. The towers? Do we ever get any confirmation on their size beyond being “big?”
  11. Per WoB, "Well, the Lord Ruler--don't forget--could compound any Allomancy he wanted." Did Brandon mean to say that TLR could compound Feruchemy, or is it true that TLR could compound alomancy? If so, would that be referring to Feruchemical Nicrosil usage? I'm a bit confused, because as far as I can remember we don't have a known mechanic to traditionally compound allomantic abilities.
  12. I haven't read the books in a little while and I can't find anything on this on the wikis or from searching the forums. I know the Steel Ministry was the organization that the Obligators/Inquisitors were part of with the Canton of Orthodoxy specifically for "religious" matters but what was the actual name of the religion? What would you call someone who believed that the Lord Ruler was God?
  13. The Lord Ruler, as we know, used atium compounding to extend his life past the natural age limit. However, at the same time, the method he used had diminishing returns due to the ever-increasing amount of age required to be tapped in order to keep him alive. As such, he would've eventually reached a point where he would've required more age in a moment to keep himself alive, than he could compound, and would've died. However, my theory is that The Lord Ruler wasn't actually in danger of dying from old age, as long as his plan worked. All he would've had to do was live until the Well of Ascension refilled, then used its power to youthen his body. As long as he kept doing this every 1024 years, he would've lived forever. The question really is whether doing that is within the Well's power. However, considering that the Well could create new species and modify genetics of pre-existing ones while preserving the people, I don't see why youthening himself wouldn't be possible. It would certainly fall in line with the intent of Preservation by preserving Rashek. Thoughts? Questions? Emperor-killing (heh) flaws in my theory?
  14. Rashek's Allomancy was incredibly powerful. Far more so then even Elend, a full Lerasium Mistborn. His latent Allomancy appeared more powerful than a Mistborn flaring duralumin, orders of magnitude stronger than Elend. It is likely that he gave himself a more powerful form of Allomancy at the well, but it seems most likely that this would simply be a scaled up version of a Lerasium Mistborn. But from how he's portrayed, he's orders of magnitude more powerful. Why is this? Is he flaring Duralumin the whole time? This is unlikely, as it would burn out his metals too quickly. So my theory? Rashek was compounding Investiture. I suspect that he was storing investiture in Nicrosil, burning it then storing vast amounts of Investiture from compounding. He would then be able to keep his investiture (like his age and his health) at a steady burn all the time he was out in public. Thoughts? (And if this was posted before, I'm sorry!)
  15. Spoilers for TFE, mild spoilers for AoL. The Lord Ruler routinely spent time being an old man in his little hut, presumably spinning cheerfully on his swivel chair or something. He did this to store youth, and chances are that he didn't continuously compound atium because it burns insanely fast. What I was wondering was, why couldn't this just be replaced with gold compounding, for more-or-less the same effect? Gold burns much more slowly, so he could keep it up pretty much continuously. (The way Miles is discussed in AoL - and the way gold compounding seems to work, in generating more health that you can then continuously store away - it suggests that he doesn't need to spend time being sickly in order to store health.) His need for it also wouldn't increase as he got older, which would be a really big plus. I'm pretty sure that being in permanent good health would be enough to make Rashek look like a young man forever. Healthy skin does not wrinkle. Healthy bones do not bow under the weight of your body. Healthy hair follicles do not produce white hair. In fact, healthy teeth probably don't even yellow. Everything beyond that is down to his mannerisms and style of dress, so he could easily present himself as a twenty-something-year-old. He wouldn't die of any age-related illnesses, either. Shouldn't that make him sufficiently immortal? The best explanations I can think of are: - Gold compounding does not reduce signs of aging, because wrinkles and stuff aren't considered health problems. (Which would be weird, because they're caused by organs functioning less and less well.) - On Scadrial, "old age" is an actual literal thing that you can die of. (Which would make it a type of illness, which would mean that gold compounding should heal it from you?) - Age is some kind of spiritweb thing (not clear on the details) that somehow inherently affects you on a plane where gold compounding can't fix the problems that it causes. (Which would need to be worked out in further detail before it can really be used to explain anything.) - The Lord Ruler actually made a big mistake in starting to compound atium, and he kept it up because stopping compounding is an even worse idea. (Probably the most plausible explanation on this list, IMO.) What do you all think?
  16. Rashek should have read Peter's Evil Overlord List. Edit: Not our Peter. Some other Peter. At least... I think so. *GASP!* New conspiracy theory! For those of you who haven't read it, why? Read it. Read it now. http://www.eviloverlord.com/lists/overlord.html And now I will be listing the rules that the Lord Ruler broke. Feel free to join in if I missed any. 6. I will not gloat over my enemies' predicament before killing them. 12. One of my advisors will be an average five-year-old child. Any flaws in my plan that he is able to spot will be corrected before implementation. 22. No matter how tempted I am with the prospect of unlimited power, I will not consume any energy field [shardpool] bigger than my head. 24. I will maintain a realistic assessment of my strengths and weaknesses. Even though this takes some of the fun out of the job, at least I will never utter the line "No, this cannot be! I AM INVINCIBLE!!!" ["God cannot be killed! God cannot be overthrown!"] (After that, death is usually instantaneous.) 29. I will dress in bright and cheery colors, and so throw my enemies into confusion. 36. I will not imprison members of the same party in the same cell block, let alone the same cell. If they are important prisoners, I will keep the only key to the cell door on my person instead of handing out copies to every bottom-rung guard in the prison. 74. When I create a multimedia presentation of my plan designed so that my five-year-old advisor can easily understand the details [or my old rival's journal that documents my origin story], I will not label the disk "Project Overlord" and leave it lying on top of my desk. 98. If an attractive young couple enters my realm, I will carefully monitor their activities. If I find they are happy and affectionate, I will ignore them. However if circumstance have forced them together against their will and they spend all their time bickering and criticizing each other except during the intermittent occasions when they are saving each others' lives at which point there are hints of sexual tension, I will immediately order their execution. 132. Before appointing someone as my trusted lieutenant, I will conduct a thorough background investigation and security clearance. 137. Before spending available funds on giant gargoyles, gothic arches, or other cosmetically intimidating pieces of architecture, I will see if there are any valid military expenditures that could use the extra budget. 151. I will not set myself up as a god. That perilous position is reserved for my trusted lieutenant. 158. I will exchange the labels on my folder of top-secret plans and my folder of family recipes. Imagine the hero's surprise when he decodes the stolen plans and finds instructions for Grandma's [Alendi's] Potato Salad. 170. I will be an equal-opportunity despot and make sure that terror and oppression is distributed fairly, not just against one particular group that will form the core of a rebellion. 186. I will not devise any scheme in which Part A consists of tricking the hero into unwittingly helping me and Part B consists of laughing at him then leaving him to his own devices. [Oops, that was Ruin.] 187. I will not hold lavish banquets in the middle of a famine. The good PR among the guests doesn't make up for the bad PR among the masses. 188. I will funnel some of my ill-gotten gains into urban renewal projects. Although slums add a quaint and picturesque quality to any city, they too often contain unexpected allies for heroes. 208. Members of my Legion of Terror will attend seminars on Sensitivity Training. It's good public relations for them to be kind and courteous to the general population when not actively engaged in sowing chaos and destruction. 220. Whatever my one vulnerability is, I will fake a different one. For example, ordering all mirrors removed from the palace, screaming and flinching whenever someone accidentally holds up a mirror, etc. In the climax when the hero whips out a mirror and thrusts it at my face, my reaction will be "Hmm...I think I need a shave."
  17. This all comes from my friend, but he doesn't post here, so very little of this is my actual idea. We were just wondering if The Lord Ruler had the ability to worldhop. If anyone in Scadrial's history could, it would be him. I believe it's WoB that every Shardworld's arcana has at least one trick that allows for worldhopping. Scadrial has three arcana that we know of. The Lord Ruler was the unquestioned master of Allomancy and Feruchemy. He could use his feruchemy to power his allomancy; nicrosil speculation aside, we have no idea how he did that and no canon examples of anyone doing the same. He prolly knew more hemalurgy than anyone there's ever been on Scadrial. He had exclusive access to the god metals, one of them in enormous quantities. However Scadrian worldhopping happens, odds are very good that The Lord Ruler was at least theoretically capable of doing it. Then there's his Ascension. In that moment when he held Preservation's power, he could well have gained cosmeric knowledge. The way Sazed realized his Powers were once a part of something greater, Rashek could have realized there were other Powers out there, too. I realize it's all speculation. I just wonder if it's something The Lord Ruler was aware of.
  18. So, we know TLR knew of several metals nobody else did: Aluminum, Durlumin, Electrum, Cadmium, Bendalloy, Chromium, Nicrosil. My question is, why didn't he use any of these during his battle with Vin? Certainly they would have been useful. I mean, TLR could have used a time bubble to start compounding something, for example. I'm sure we can think of other applications. And he certainly had a chance to use, for example, Chromium. He was touching both Vin and Marsh at different points during that fight. One touch, and poof, their metals are gone. It probably wouldn't have changed the outcome of the fight, to be sure- Vin could still have drawn on the mists as she ended up doing and defeated him by the same means- but there's no way TLR could have anticipated that. If he knew about those metals, it seems like he wasn't fighting optimally. How do we explain this? Had Sanderson not thought of the effects of those metals yet? Did he not think he needed them? Mental instability due to Ruin's influence? Second, a question about Ruin. At the end of HoA, Sazed fixes the world using information contained in his coppermind. The thing is, we know Ruin could change the information in a coppermind. Why did Ruin not change Sazed's data? Of course, Ruin wasn't great at seeing the future, but we have confirmation that the information was being used to provide such things as improved farming techniques and better medicine to the Skaa after TLR's fall. Surely that would not have been in keeping with the cause of Ruin. He could have altered the information in Sazed's metalminds so that Sazed's advice would be bad and contribute to human suffering, but he apparently did not. Why not?
