So, we all know that Knights Radiant Orders can create Squires which allow others to access Surgebinding while not having a Nahel bond themselves. My question is: is it possible to become a Knights Radiant of one Order and then become a Squire of a different Order? Like, if Kaladin was still a Windrunner and went and tried to become a Lightweaver Squire, would he be able to?

Hello! I found myself on this forum a lot searching up questions I had after reading and decided it was finally time to make an account! I've read all of the Stormlight Archive and just recently got each book on Audible and am listening to them all before Rhythm of War comes out. I am a HUGE Adolin fan - not often do you see a character who has it all, but isn't conceited and isn't jealous as everyone around him starts to surpass him. I'm just finishing the first Mistborn trilogy...and wow I never thought I would find something better than The Stormlight Archive, but Mistborn may overtake it. So, I had a question on Squires. It's a question regarding your opinions on them? Does it take anything away from the Knights Radiant to you that now nearly all of Bridge 4 has the same abilities as Kaladin and a few have even bonded spren? Again, as a huge Adolin fan I always thought it was going to be unlikely he would become a Radiant, but if that moment ever did come I would lose it and probably shed some tears of joy. Now with squires it went from unlikely to inevitable (still have hope he is the first to revive a dead spren). The Stormlight Archive is nearly flawless for me, I just don't know if I can get behind a Knights Radiant losing that exclusiveness. What are your guys thoughts on Squires?

So reading Oathbringer I was really confused. The Knights Radiant was refounded and the numbers were increasing. But mostly with just more wind runners. Shallan is kind of training squires... But not really. Kaladin is the only one we see who actually is trying to get more radiants. He is recruiting squires and making the most of it. Because of this we have several new radiants. Rock, Teft, Lopen, and maybe a few others. But Jasnah doesn't have any squires. Shallan accidentally gets a few but she isn't even meaning to get them. Renarian isn't doing anything. Why is Kaladin the only one who actually is actively working to expand the knights radiant?

So, we know that Bridge four have become Kaladin's squires, gaining Windrunner powers when in his proximity. We also know that Rlain has stayed with Bridge Four, thankfully untransformed by the Everstorm. So, is he a squire? Do we finally have a listener who can surge bind? Will he be the bridge that will finally allow listeners to attract and bond radiant spren?

One of the epigraphs in Words of Radiance gave me pause when I read it. What are these squires that are mentioned? Traditionally, squires were the assistents of knights, helping them put on their armor and the like. Radiants of course, who seem to have once had a mechanism for making their armor appear and disappear, seem unlikely to need this service. But squires also were knights-in-training, awaiting an opportunity to become knights themselves. A potential hypothesis that can be drawn here is that once Radiants were accompanied by men and women who were attempting or in the process of becoming members of the Knights Radiant. I believe that there is a small glimpse of this in one of Dalinar's visions. Initially, I thought that perhaps this woman's abilities as a Surgebinder allowed her to grant her followers the ability to use a bit of Stormlight. Now, I am not so certain. She almost certainly a Releaser or Dustbringer, her Surges are Division and Abrasion. Neither of these would seem to account for such a power. These men would seem to be her squires, or at least people who could be her squires. I also believe that this is what was offered to Dalinar by Harkaylain. He couldn't promise that Dalinar would become a Radiant, but he could give him a shot by making him a squire. Now, with Lopen's abilities, and mentions of other members of Bridge Four glowing, I believe that the men of Bridge Four are now Kaladin's squires.
