  1. This post was inspired by @JustQuestin2004's thread on turning anyone into a Mistborn. I felt the need to continue their just quest of finding out this answer, at least in some way. We know that it's possible to make Scadriens Snap, even if they don't have a lot of Innate Investiture and wouldn't Snap normally. That's what the Mists did, after all. However, it seems that doing this requires there to be more trauma involved, more cracks in the Spiritweb to let Preservation's power rise to the forefront and function as intended. Additionally, when the Mists Snapped people they raised the level of Innate Investiture in them slightly to aid the process. I hypothesize that to Snap any Scadrien you must fulfill these requirements then. I believe that there may be multiple ways to do this. First off, if you were to use a Hemalurgic spike with a Command specifically meant to crack open the Spiritweb wider, but also meant to increase the person's Innate Investiture (specialized Command on a nicrosil spike charged from a single non Allomancer, probably with a Blanked Identity to make it more compatible with the would be Allomancer). This would create cracks in the Spiritweb large enough to Snap the potential Allomancer and would increase their Investiture enough to make it more viable. After they've Snapped, you can probably remove the spike and recycle it to Snap someone else, which is pretty convenient. It's also possible that the spike's own contents are now programmed to the new Allomancer's power though, which may prevent this, but you would have a new power spike and an independently functioning Allomancer, even though both would have a below average power level. It's also possible that if you use a Hemalurgic spike to add it their Investiture you won't get the standard of Allomancy, but may instead get a Ruin-fueled version of it, a mixed version, or maybe end up with Feruchemy instead as it is a mix of Ruin and Preservation. Perhaps an Unsealed Nicrosilmind could allow one to increase their base level of Investiture instead of needing a spike, removing this complication, but a trauma inducing spike would likely still be required for the Snapping part. The second idea is that you increase the Scadrien's Connection to Preservation instead of Investiture, then trying to Snap them. This could be achieved either with Hemalurgic duralumin or Feruchemical medallion shenanigans, Connecting you to the Shard of Preservation in the attempt to make a spiritual bridge between you and it so that it can suffuse your Spiriweb more when you try to Snap yourself. You also may just want to increase both Innate Investiture and Connection to Preservation in the person, though I figured I'd start with the possibilities that require the least work. It also may be possible, based on this new WoB, to at least temporarily access the Metallic Arts by Blanking Identity and tapping massive quantities of Connection to Preservation through medallion technology, though this may not lead to a permanent power manifesting and would require the proper Intent (which requires specific knowledge). It might just let you pull in the Mists, however, and maybe raise your Allomantic potential, though this is highly theoretical and would also probably require a specific Intent. SA spoilers
  2. I've read a few people talk about how Snapping seems weird and messed up and wanted to share my take on it. If you disagree feel free to share your views. At the core, Snapping is about self-preservation. Nature in general and for the purpose of this thread humanity specifically can do amazing things when put under extreme conditions. Mental and physiological changes happen when people are in a survival scenario, where they not only learn that they can make themselves do things that they would never consider doing, but that they are physically able to do extraordinary things. Under specific conditions people can lift cars, survive in freezing water for hours, cut off their own arm, or live off of seals for months (yes I've heard stories of each of these). Narratives of these experiences not infrequently describe hidden reserves or wells of energy that the person didn't know that they had, and snapping might not be a bad term for suddenly deciding you need to cut your arm off to survive. This is much deeper than simple adrenaline. In the Cosmere however, when the soul is reaching out to survive, a Shard responds. What Scadrians have that is different is the innate spark given to them by Preservation, sometimes the power of Preservation instilled in their bloodline, and with that Connection when they reach out instinctively in desperation to survive they gain access to Preservation's power. Allomancers get an even deeper Connection to this power. Harmony who has access to both Ruin's ability to crack souls and Preservation's ability to reinforce souls likely has options available to Snap new Allomancers that Preservation alone never had. Like with many aspects of Allomancy in TFE, Snapping in of itself is not evil, but the conditions it sets on obtaining power lead to horrible things done by the likes of Straff Venture. The old mechanism of Snapping is probably still viable after the Catacendre though unnecessary for those with access to Allomancy and is likely the reason why the Set's non-lethal Hemalurgic spiking was more effective when the donor was tortured. If you think about it, Allomancy doesn't restrict you at all from killing others, but it generally makes you better at surviving. Pewter, Iron, Steel, Copper, and Tin are the more obvious exanples, but even metals like brass help you survive as can be seen with Vin's "Luck". Perhaps even the seemingly useless Allomantic abilities will prove advantageous in the context of all the ways to get killed in the Cosmere on a physical, cognitive, or spiritual level. How does this relate to Snapping in other magic systems? I'll let others discuss that as I'm nearing the end of my posting time.
  3. So I had a few questions about the specifics of Preservation’s snapping mists 1. The Mists raised the Allomantic potential of people who didn’t have any to begin with. But what would it do to an unsnapped Misting or Mistborn? Would they just face a regular snapping? Would they become a more powerful Misting? If it helps, imagine a room of 100 unsnapped Mistings. In theory, the Mists should still act, but maybe not if the targets are treated as Snapped Mistings 2. If #1 is true, can the Mists overwrite the ability of an unsnapped Misting? For example, 100 unsnapped Thugs walk into the Mists. Some would have to convert into other metals if Preservation still wanted 16 of each Misting. But I also assumed that the Mists do make one of each Misting and the 16% isn’t just referring to who gets sick. Similarly, can the Mists turn an unsnapped Mistborn into a Misting? 3. The one that interests me most. Can the Mists affect Feruchemists? It’s could easily be possible since the Keepers were all dead by HoA. Trickier if you assume the Mists never stopped Snapping people, but still not impossible, since Keepers wouldn’t have much reason to be in the night mists. (Side question: how many members did the Keepers have? Just curious to see how many could trigger the Mist if they were all together. 4. Is there any reason to think the Mists ever stopped Snapping people? They did only appear at night after Rashek used the Well, but I don’t buy that he suddenly figured it out in the relatively short time after scorching Scadrial. The transformations would also be easy to mask. Affected nobles or noble blooded skaa would just be thought of as Snapped the normal way. Skaa were even more superstitious and few would go into the Mists. On top of that, even fewer would figure out their powers, since knowledge is rare and skaa mistings either hide or die/become inquisitor fodder. If they did, most people would probably conclude noble blood. Given what we know, I honestly think it’s more likely the Mists never stopped Snapping than that they did, despite only acting at night. But if there’s any contradictory evidence or things I’ve forgotten from HoA, let me know
  4. I was thinking about it, and you know how some surgebinders seem to get a little burst of stormlight when they swear an ideal? I wonder if something similar, if more low-key, doesn't happen in the process of Preservation/Harmony investing an allomancer when they Snap, producing a weak manifestation of their allomantic power. If so, that would help explain a few fuzzy points in the text; how mistings of highly toxic metals like Cadmium are identified, and how Kelsier managed to escape the Pits after Snapping (since the Pits were damaged by allomancy, it wouldn't make any sense for the Lord Ruler to have allomancers with metal vials acting as guards). It's hard to say for sure though, since we've never actually seen anyone snap yet.
  5. If someone who had the potential to become a Misting or Mistborn was given a Hemalurgic spike before they had the opportunity to snap and come into their powers, would the Connection to Ruin prevent them from snapping and gaining their inborn Allomantic powers from Preservation's power?
  6. Specifically wondering about Era-1 Snapping, since that's when the noble houses used to beat their children half to death (or all to death). There was a discussion on this week's Sanderlanche Podcast about whether you could maybe emotionally scar kids instead, set up a fake murder scene or something, and I'm taking that thought even further: what if you just made the kid feel traumatized for about thirty seconds (or however long it takes?) Bring in a Rioter, have them zap the kid with a full-strength angst-beam, no one dies! Well, unless they have a heart condition. Still, gotta be a much lower mortality rate than punching them into Allomancy. Is there a reason this wouldn't work?
  7. Preservation altered allomancy so that 1/16 of all mistings were seers (atium burners). Which metal did he get rid of to allow for this to happen?
  8. I HAVE RETURNED! Question of the week, if someone who is a Mistborn is not snapped, will they still be able to resist the pull into the Beyond? We know the more Invested someone is, the longer they can last, but are they still considered Invested if they are never snapped?
  9. Hey, Another question... What happened to Snapping? In Era 1, in order to determine whether you were an allomancer or not you would have to be "Snapped," I.E. practically tortured. I can't find any evidence of this happening in Era 2, however. Did Sazed change this? Thanks! -Channelknight
  10. I searched this forum for the answer to why Reen repeatedly beat Vin on a regular basis her entire life. Seeing how loyal he was to her at his end confuses me. I assumed he was trying to snap allomancy into her (apparantly childbirth did it (if it were only so easy for others back then)). Could there be another darker explanation about Reen. I apologize if this topic has already been discussed, please send me a link to it. Then delete this clutter here. Thanks Cosmere
  11. Ok, here' s my question. Just started checking the forum for reasons why allomancy is so much weaker in Alloy of law. I recall that allomancy had been on the decline for the last thousand years and that the actual strength of the allomantic abilities were weaker than the first Mistborns and mistings. After Sazed ascended to godhood he lowered the requred level of trauma for snapping to occur. Ive read that The reason snapping is necessary is because it wounds the soul and that makes it easier for allomantic powers to manifest. My question is. Is it possible that by sazed lowering the threshold for pain, he inadvertently lessened the chance to become a misting and all but eliminated the chance for someone to become a mistborn. Spook was made into a full mistborn at the end of Hero of ages and became known as the lord Mistborn. It was also stated that he went on to have many children. Its hard to believe that in merely a hundread years, there are no known mistborn (or feruchemists for that matter, despite the fact that feruchemy didn't diminish nearly as much as allomancy) considering that mistborn were still being born 1000 years after they appeared. I believe that when sazed altered the snapping process, he lessened the chance of people becoming mistborn at all. With the large influx of EXACTLY 16 percent of the population becoming mistings because of the mist, (Pure preservation just like the beads of Lerasium) shouldn't allomancy have had an influx of mistborn and misting children just based on the 16 percent alone?? Anyway, its 10.15 and i need to go to bed. Please voice your thoughts as I'm open to anyone else's views
  12. So I got to thinking about how Shallan was a surgebinder from a young age, even before her flashbacks start. According to Brandon (#8 and #14) the principle of snapping to open up cracks in the soul is Cosmere wide and across magic systems, which means that Shallan would have to have been broken enough for a Nahel bond even before her flashbacks reveal how horrible her life was. So my question is, do we have any hints as to what could have broken her before her mother's death? She had progressed quite far in the bond, IIRC, so it wasn't just right before her mother's death.
  13. What we are led to believe: 1) You need a genetic predisposition to snap (ie you must have noble blood line). 2) You are either born an allomancer or you aren't, but you don't gain you power until you snap. 3) The mists (as preservation's subconscious) will try to make you snap if you go out into them. If all three of these things are true, how do we explain Kelsier and Demoux? Kelsier definitely has the genetic predisposition. His father was noble, his brother was a misting. My problem is that I can't see how he made it all the way to Mare's death without snapping. As a world class thief, he had to spend a great deal of time in the mists. He had to go through a lot of emotional and physical trauma during that time. He is then captured by the Lord Ruler and sent to the Pits, where he spends at least some weeks/months on the edge of death. None of that was enough to snap him? Demoux and the other soldiers that became mistings in HOA. Are we supposed to believe that they all had noble blood? My theory is that to become an allomancer, you either have to have Preservation already attached to your spirit genetically, or you have to crack your spirit web sufficiently enough for Preservation to enter. Mare's death, and his guilt around it, was enough to open huge gaps in Kelsier's spirit web, allowing preservation to enter fully, making him mistborn. The soldiers spirit webs were cracked by the stress of the situation, and it was critical to Preservation's plan, so Preservation was able to force his way into their spirit web enough to make them mistings, even though they did not have the genetic predisposition. Am I making too much out of this? Curious as to what you think.
  14. At some point in the books, it says that allomantic snapping can be caused by intense emotion, but it doesn't need to be a bad one, like someone could snap from joy. Why not get emotional allomancers to snap people, easily and painlessly.
  15. Every Scadrian, being of Preservation and Ruin, has some tiny theoretical latent potential ("seeds") in the Metallic Arts: But for most people, this is never enough to actually manifest (except possibly if the Mists get involved). For those whose potential is strong enough, though, Snapping is possible. I'd suggest that every Scadrian specifically has some degree of Allomantic potential in each metal. Usually, when someone Snaps, damage to their soul creates a "crack" allowing the power of Preservation to flow through - turning the latent potential into an actual ability. Thus, probably, a person has (by random chance - there are Allomantic bloodlines, but there don't seem to be specific lines of Coinshots or Thugs or Soothers) one metal's potential just slightly stronger than the others. At the moment of Snapping, that "point in the spiritweb" hits its critical threshold and activates first - and all the power flows through it, so none of the other metals' points activate. It's like pouring water into a cup with a hole in the bottom, so it flows out as quickly as in. In very rare cases, though, there's just so much Preservation coming through that that first point can't use it up, can't keep up with the inflow. In that case it's like using a garden hose to fill a cup with a pinhole in the bottom - the water can't get out fast enough, and just sloshes around. Then all the metals' points are pushed past the critical threshold, and they all activate practically simultaneously - and the person becomes a full Mistborn. (Savantism, then, is the widening of that "pinhole" by pushing too much water - Preservation power/Investiture - through it.) Originally, it seems that Feruchemy always came with the full set of metals. This makes sense, since Feruchemy doesn't draw on an external source of power and doesn't involve a Snapping event. But in Era 2, the spiritual DNA has mixed, and the Feruchemy access mechanism has gotten "stuck to" and largely overridden by the Allomancy one, creating Ferrings.
  16. So a thought comes to me post Mistborn reread. Why are allomancers so rare? Sure in the era of TFE the known abundance of allomancers was limited by knowledge, as well as socioeconomic factors such as nobles generally having fewer children. But by HoA it is identified that around 16 percent of skaa are mistings (more, as it is implied that Preservation didn't reveal mistings that were irrelevant). Furthermore it would seem that an allomancer does not need to be born to parents who are allomancers, although that likely enhancers their likelihood of inheriting allomancy. Fast forward to AoL and more and it seems that all the allomancers don't seem as common as they ought to be. Especially with a reduced class divide.
  17. It seems that all people must undergo some form of stress to gain their powers. Mistborn need to "snap" and experience some form of traumatizing physical or emotional stress to gain allomancy. The Elantrians need to be taken by the Shaod. The Returned somehow gain one incredibly powerful breathe when they return, although anyone can get enough breathe to become powerful. The parshendi must transform in the middle of a highstorm, and surgebinders must form the nahel bond with a spren. Kaladin, at least, was physically, emotionally, and mentally stressed before he figured out the oaths. Thoughts?
  18. OK, just thought this one up: SPOILERS,of course. Is it possible to steal someone's Allomantic ability before they "snap?" Do you think that the Allomancy is part of a person's spiritweb enough that their ability could be stolen before it has become active? Having run this through my head, I can't decide. I'm leaning more towards no, because it hasn't manifest itself as an active part of their spiritweb, same as you couldn't use a Hemalurgic spike to steal someone's life force once they are dead, since, at that point, their spiritweb isn't tied to their body anymore. But, on the other hand (sorry for sounding like Tevye), it is ultimately a part of their spiritweb, and therefore could possibly be stolen. It all depends on if the ability has to be active to be stolen. Tell me what y'all think. Thanks, Nathan "Schventagon" Swensen
