  1. Hello, I have decided to save up some money to commission a work of art to hang in my home. I would like it to be of Dalinar and incorporate the quote about the most important step a man can take being the next one, which is one of my favorites. I was wondering if anyone has any artist recommendations I should look at that might be a good fit. Thanks.
  2. So I've been in this reading challenge (one friend dared me to read 250 books this year) and I'm about halfway through. The problem is, I'm running out of books to read! Does anyone have any recommendations? I like to read pretty much everything (I'm not particularly picky), though I prefer Fantasy and other fiction genres.
  3. I'm looking for inspiration for designing a magic system with philosophical underpinnings, a la Sanderson's cosmere, and I've come to the conclusion that the best way to find it is to read books (shocker, I know). I've read all of Brandon's cosmere books, which I collectively consider one magic system with many interpretations, as they all share the same philosophical foundation, namely Plato's Theory of Forms. I also stumbled upon the Prince of Nothing series and the subsequent Aspect-Emperor series by R. Scott Bakker, which has a magic system focused on leveraging logic and/or creativity to overwrite reality. Now I'm reading Dune while I wait for the third book of the Aspect-Emperor, which didn't arrive with the other three, to be delivered so I can read that. But beyond that, I'm starting to run dry on fantasy series with interesting magic systems. I've read all the cosmere books (of which I am now an avid fan), the Wheel of Time, R. Scott Bakker's series, and Harry Potter, though the last one is a bit of an interesting case in regards to magic systems. If anyone has any recommendations for fantasy series with interesting, unique systems of magic, I'd love to hear about it. P.S. I'm not sure if this is where a post like should go, this just seemed like the "miscellaneous" forum, so if any mods know of a better place for it, I would not object at all for it to be moved there.
  4. Hey y’all I’m new here and I just finished the Mistborn trilogy and I’m in love with it! What should I read next?
  5. Hello all, I only really game into gaming in the PS2 era. Prior to that, I had a few games on the N64, but not many. So I'm going to try and replicate my games from the N64. Starfox, Ocorana of Time, Excite Bike, Golden Eye, Rogue Squadron, Pod Racer, and The World is Not Enough was my N64 collection. But besides that, I'm blank on any good games from other consoles of that era. Or other good games from the N64 for that matter. I'm a big fan of scifi, mechs, shooters, and RPG's on consoles. So, what games do you all recommend?
  6. I read so much it is more or less my second job. I prefer audiobooks because I teach and trying to read the traditional way leads to unintentional naps and then sadness when I'm up too late and then up early again. I'll put it this way. The collective wheel of time series stands about 460 hours in audiobook form. Round about 19 days. I binged it in less than two months, and then did it again this summer. I need a queue from reliable sources. Notable things I've read and enjoyed (which is most things, really): Gentleman Bastards, Scott Lynch The First Law, Joe Abercrombie Obviously Sanderson, though I didn't care so much for Mistborn. Wheel of Time, Robert Jordan/Sanderson (current and crowned favorite) Farseer books (all three trilogies), Robin Hobb A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin Harry Potter, Rowling (proud Slytherin) Tolkien's books, including the oddments, though I've yet to tackle Beren and Luthien. Explicit sex and violence/gore don't bother me, and I rather enjoy a slew of foul language but still like stuff that doesn't have it. More into fantasy than sci-fi, and I'm not looking for your stereotypical dystopia, so don't you dare recommend A Handmaid's Tale. I need character driven fiction. I want flawed people to love and hate. Batman, not Superman. Magic is cool but not necessary. Honestly, if you approve of the series above and have something unlisted you couldn't put down or stop reading/listening to, it'll probably end up on my list anyway. Like I said: I always need something to read. I have also been known to enjoy things others don't like, for stupid reasons, so just throw stuff out there. I'm thinking about Outlander but a reliable source is iffy on it. SEND ME YOUR BOOKS, THE LONGER THE BETTER.
  7. Hello, 17th Shard! I'll be brief, direct, and to the point. No one likes an off-topic, meandering first paragraph, right? Why, just the other day I was reading a topic and thinking "Gee, some people just can't seem to hold a thought..." Ahem. Here's the issue: my family and I enjoy viewing various television programs every night. It helps us unwind, relax, and avoid the Almighty-cursed proposition of having a conversation of an evening. (We get along just fine, but no one quite feels like chit-chatting at the end of a day.) Unfortunately, here lately we have completely run out of quality entertainment material, leaving us woefully without a show every evening. We'd appreciate some good recommendations for television shows, if it's not too much trouble. We avoid shows with excessive gore or sexual content, and would prefer clean, family shows. We're fond of Doctor Who, Firefly, Once Upon a Time, and clean sitcoms such as Corner Gas. We've been known to indulge in well-written cartoons like Phineas and Ferb, but they're not generally our first choice. The 17th Shard is a well-versed community when it comes to entertainment, so I look forward to seeing what recommendations you have. Thanks in advance.
  8. I've kind of had crime stories on the brain lately, but good ones are hard to find. any recommendations? I enjoyed Bones are Forever by Kathy Reichs but I found her other book to be lackluster.
  9. Well hello fellow Roshar...ians? Rosharites?, My name is Hearthebeard and I have just finished Way of Kings and Words of Radiance at a blistering pace, though that is all of Sanderson's work that I have read. I love the mythos of this world, though just from perusing this site, it is evident that much more information about this universe is available in his other books. Which should I read? And in what order? Life before Death, Radiants.
