  1. Happy Independence Day everyone!! What are your favorite parts about today?
  2. This is going up a bit early, just because people are already talking about it and new folks are asking questions. @Chaos says the old thread isn't good enough and tasked me with making a new one, probably because I opened my big mouth at just the wrong time. So lo, the explanation comes: in just a bare few weeks, an annual phenomenon of confusion will bear down upon us like a shower of angry Tribbles.* Every year, as the days grow short and the weather grows cold, we creep slowly towards two great holidays that hover near the end of the year, ready to embrace us into their festivities. Families will gather, feasts will be had, and general revelry will echo throughout the land! I refer, of course, to the birthdays of Peter Ahlstrom and Brandon Sanderson.** If you don't know who Peter is, well, he's Brandon's assistant editorial director, and pours a ton of work into supporting the writing endeavors of our favorite author. Back in the days of the Timewasters' Guide, he roamed the forums under the moniker "Ookla the Mok." In order to remember and honor the days when he still had time to frolick among us unhindered, we change our screen names to some variant of "Ookla the <____>" beginning on his birthday, November 26. It's all terribly bewildering if you don't know what's happening. I joined the forum in late October of 2014, so I had barely a month to get settled in before suddenly I was surrounded by Ooklas. They were everywhere. So many Ooklas. And I had no idea why. So now I tell you all, so that hopefully you will be less confused than I was as a poor ickle noob. A lot of folks just play with it for a week or so, but some are hardcore enough to keep the madness going until Koloss Head-Munching Day (aka Brandon's birthday) in December. Enjoy the upcoming festivities! *Don't worry. The Tribbles have tiny parachutes. They'll be fine. **Why, what holidays did you think I meant?
  3. Just a thread for wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, or your equivalent holiday. And a little something reminding us that we can be good to eachother, even in the worst of times. So Merry/Happy Christmas/Haunakka/quansa/[insert your holiday here] I hope its a good one for everyone.
  4. Happy Solstice, everyone. Let's do some Cosmere themed holiday carols to bring some extra brightness to our lives! I'll start with this, set to the tune of "12 Days of Christmas". Mild Oathbringer Spoilers, which is why it has to be in this forum. On the Twelfth Day of Weeping, my Highprince gave to me Twelve Living Shards, Eleven Spren A'Spinning, Ten Heralds Leaping, Nine Odious Splinters, Eight Princes Squabbling, Seven Books for Writing, Sixth of the Dusk, Fiiiiiiiiiiiiive Thousand Breaths, Four Mistborn Eras, Three Realms United, Two Twinborn Twins, And a dark Blade in a Bright Sheath. Let's hear yours!
  5. Welcome one and all once again to our yearly tradition! That's right Ookla the Mokovial is now! For those new to the tradition, every year around this time, we have fun renaming ourselves to "Ookla the _____" in celebration of @PeterAhlstrom, Brandon's assistant! For those wondering about the lore behind this holiday, i say shove off! ...Ok, fine. This tradition was started to recognize peter for generally being awesome for all the unseen work he does! The reason for the name change is because way back on the time waster's guide forums, peter went by the username "Ookla the Mok". In order to commemorate him and his old username, we came up with this tradition mostly off handedly and/or as a joke some 5 or 6 years back, and it just kinda stuck! The holiday generally runs until we get bored of it, which usually goes for about a week or so, so until then, try to come up with a creative, festive name!
  6. I run the annual Brandon Sanderson fan gift swap, Secret Sazed. I know it's a little early to be thinking about holiday gift giving, but since most of the people who participate do physical crafts or art, I wanted to get this out early this year. We offer both digital and physical giving and just about anything creative is welcome. If you'd like to participate, use the following form. If you're uncertain on what you want to give, indicate that on the form. You can go back and edit it later :-) http://bit.ly/SecretSazed2017
  7. Hello and welcome to the most pointless post you will probably ever read on 17th Shard! I was just enjoying the warmth of my apartment while the snow blasted outside making the landscape a winter wonderland from out of the songs. As I was musing on the various aspects of the first Elsric Short story that I am writing, an odd thought struck me. Susebron from Warbreaker is one of the characters I find most dear to me. Unlike most of my other favorite Cosmere characters I simply enjoy the fact that his is pure and devoted to doing what is right because that is his nature. I mean the man has the mentality of a teddy-bear who also happens to hold enough Breath to break a kingdom. As I was contemplating, I suddenly asked myself, "What if the God-King was to step outside in the middle of a snowstorm? Not only is the ground solid white, but each flake of snow suspended in the air is about as pure white as you can find in nature. By Hoid's left buttock! It would be like watching an atomic color bomb!" Now that is a paraphrase, but essentially such an event would be one of the most interesting things to observe in the Cosmere. I added to this post a couple attachments that I think help capture what such an event might look like. I hope you enjoy this little mental image! This post is utterly useless other than to wish you a Happy Holiday my fellow Cosmere Scholar. If you find any other conceptualization of what a God-King color apocalypse would look like please post them below for our amusement! Until the next random post, have a great end to the year!
  8. Hello, all! By now I'm sure some of our more perceptive users (and probably anyone with eyes) and are new around here might be asking themselves "What's with all these ookla names?" Long story short, it's a holiday tradition around here to rename yourself "ookla the ____" in honor of none other than Brandon's assistant Peter Ahlstrom we like to call 'Ookla the Mokovial' (or at least i do). This holiday was founded when Peter decided to drop his previous moniker of "Ookla the Mok" that he used way back in the day on the timewaster's guide forums, for the more sensible (and boring) approach of using his real name! A few people around here found that to be unfortunate, and in response, we decide once a year, we should all rename ourselves in commemoration. This holiday coincides with peter's birthday (November 26th), but a few members have decided to start early (no big deal! as of writing this, november 26th is a few hours away by the mountain time zone peter resides in, thus me making the topic a bit early!). The holiday usually runs about a week or so, but generally goes "until we get bored of it". Members usually have fun trying to guess who's who in light of changed around profiles, and such a thread is already running! So anyone new to the tradition: you now know what's up, so get creative with those names and have some fun! Enjoy, guys! --Jiverongal
  9. Recently, after thinking about the lyrics of the Christmas song "Jingle Bells" I payed specific attention to one line: "Oh what fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight!" And so I thought, "Hey! SING A SLAYING SONG tonight! The Parshendi sing while they kill!" And so I sought the opportunity to make a parody of this classic Christmas song. Here was the result: Parhsendi Plateau Assault Written by ChullRider To the tune of "Jingle Bells" Sang by the Parshendi ---------- Dashing on Plateaus Preparing to slay O'er the Plains we go Killing all the way! Singing Creepily Making Spirits Grim What fun it is to run And sing a Slaying song to them! --Chorus-- O! Alethi! Alethi! Please prepare to DIE! Oh what fun it is to kill all of the Ale----THI! Alethi! Alethi! Please prepare to DIE! O, what fun it is to kill all the Alethi! ----------- And unlike "Jingle Bells," this one isn't festive, so you can sing it year-round! Happy caroling! ~ChullRider
