  1. Monster Melee is back! This time, I wanted to have a little fun do some ego pandering. So, for this monster melee, we're going to be using a creature not yet seen in the cosmere. Our own cosmere version of Frankenstein's monster! So, for the battle, we're going to have to decide what the creature is made of, what kind of realistic skill set we want to give it, while still making it a skilled warrior, and how many Dakhor monks we want to throw at the thing. As usual, once most of the basics have been set in stone, I will open up the poll for voting! Here's the Coppermind entry on the monks:http://coppermind.net/wiki/Dakhor I'd say we wait to decide on how many monks we use until we figure out just what our creation can do. As for limitations, I had joked in my thread about making him out of Vibranium, but let's try to keep it to in-cosmere materials. (Maybe one day we'll do a thread where he's made of Cortosis and sick him on a jedi!) A couple of ideas as far as that goes: Diamond might not be a bad choice, depending on how advanced in metallurgy we want to go. I personally wouldn't mind a more modern metal, but I'll let the group decide on that. For reference, platinum and titanium were both discovered in the 1700s, though platinum wasn't utilized until the very early 1800s, and titanium wasn't able to be used until 1910, 120 years after it's first discovery (Support Monster Melee folks, it's entertaining and educational!) We also could experiment with giving him some sort of reduced investiture power, though I don't want to get too crazy. Maybe a misting of some sort, throw out the ideas and we'll either find one that fits, or decide he's special enough as is. One thing to keep in mind is that we can always throw more monks at him to even things out As a slight refresher, Roshone has just suffered defeat at the hands of the Thunderclast, who fell down the cliff and disintegrated for dramatic effect, and because I wanted closure with the monster. (There's two midnight essence still unaccounted for.) He then turned his attentions towards the small country with the big personality, Herdaz, where our battle will be set. Thanks for the patience on this one, last month was crazy busy. Three different weddings, a weeklong holiday to NYC and Niagara falls, Ontario, and of course the 24 hour shifts beating me up. (I'm not actually British, I just think 'holiday' sounds so much better than 'vacation.') With the release of Sixth of Dusk, I might be inclined to do a few more of these than I said in my lost post, but I'd really like to see more participation before that happens. And, on the subject of garnering more interest, I thought I'd share my little plan for The Ballad of Roshone's Revenge. When it does finally finish up, I am interested in getting it printed out nice in a book, and possibly getting some cover art if anyone is up to the task (I'm not that great of an artist, passable, but not great.) Then, I'd like to be able to ship that book out to anyone who has participated in the threads and would be interested in signing it. I might have done the writing on the narratives, but every single person that has posted on these threads contributed in just as big a way. Without your help, I would not be nearly as pleased with the results of these threads. But once we've gotten it signed by everyone who wants to, I want to give it to Brandon as a gift. An official fanfiction of the 17thshard. It might get a little expensive to ship depending on where everyone is located, and I'm willing to help as much as I can, but if there's a bunch of international shipping involved, we'll have to figure out some way of working it out. Anyways, hope you guys are having as much fun with this as I have. Let the discussions begin!
  2. (Warbreaker Spoilers below) Welcome back to Monster Melee 5, or The Ballad of Roshone's Revenge; the thread where we debate and vote on which monsters would win in a fight, and then I write up a battle scene using your suggestions and a little bit of Roshone bashing. In case you're just joining us, here's a small recap of the story so far: So this week, we've got a group against a single large baddie, Kalad's Phantom's vs a Thunderclast. Kalad's Phantoms- http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/8775-magic-fuel/ (very little here.) Thunderclast-http://coppermind.net/wiki/Thunderclast (Not much here either.) This week again I'm going to without the voting until we have some battle parameters set. We'll need a couple of things set in stone before I open the polls: Setting-last week we left Jah Keved, and we need to continue our trek, (after all, movement gives the illusion that the story is moving forward.) The base of the Horneater Mountains. Number of Phantoms (Can't have the whole army, unless we want a bunch of Thunderclasts as well, but I think a group against one battle would be pretty cool here. You might be able to sway me otherwise.) Debate as of now is 20-25 against 1 Thunderclast 25 Phantoms Weapons the Phantoms have: Friggen Giant Warhammers Maces Meteor Hammers Flails Friggen Giant Boulders Bare hands-not be confused with bear arms Morningstars Also, feel free to throw in suggestions for future fights, ideas for moving the narrative forward, ideas to improve Monster Melee in general. I'm having fun doing this, but the thread is for you as well. If there's anything you'd like to see changed, let me know! The more participation we have the better it will be. I want to stress that I didn't come up with the idea for Roshone being involved, the Trolloss, Roshone getting spiked, that was all you guys, so please throw your ideas out there! Let the discussions begin! Here's the battlescene!
  3. Welcome back to Monster Melee, also known as "The Ballad of Roshone's Revenge." In this thread, we discuss battles between various monsters, and then I, using your suggestions and input, write a battle scene with the results voted on by the 17th shard. The battle is staged between Hearthstone's own Roshone and his eternal enemy (yes, I know that could mean anyone who has met him) the Whitespine This week, we have a very special installment. The Rise of the Trolloss! If you've been tuning in weekly, you remember the major events from last week. If you haven't, you really should get caught up before reading this week's story portion. So for this week, I'm going to be running things a bit differently. The match up this week is an army of skeletals (size TBD) against the insanely scary Trolloss! Since we're dealing with a creature of our own devising, we'll have to have an extensive debate to decide on exactly how uber powerful this thing is. As such, I won't be opening the polls until a good sized debate has ensued. So, as a group, we need to discuss the capabilities of the Trolloss, and come up with a number for the Skeletal Army that could actually pose a fighting chance against this great beast. Once the voting dust has settled, I'll start writing up a battle scene using the mechanics we discuss in the fight. Skeletals:http://coppermind.net/wiki/Skeletal These things are puny! We're going to need a lot of them to even put up any sort of fight. There's not much information on them in the coppermind unfortunately, but they'll be perfect for an epic showdown with the Trolloss. Trolloss: As we discuss, I'll try to add everything we decide on here. Needless to say though, this is one major baddie. A few things to keep in mind: If you join the discussion late, try to read all the posts, that way you don't miss out on any battle parameters that have already been suggested. I'm very open to any ideas! I started this thread intending to just have battle scenes each week, but suggestions from 17th Sharders have inspired this thread into its large scale state its in now. The more we debate, and the more ideas you submit, the more material I'll have to pull from for the battle, throw those ideas out there! Finally, enjoy yourself! I've been having a blast creating this thread with you guys, and I hope you're having as much fun reading and participating. Let's have some fun! Edit: I'm posting the battle scene here, as well as in the post later in the forum, for ease of reading in the future.
  4. A tad late this week (24 hour shift yesterday was a little hectic) but here is the next installment in the Monster Melee, and soon to follow, more of the Ballad of Roshone's Revenge, where I take the the winner of the polls, and create a fight scene using the tactics and battle mechanics the thread provides me with, all at the expense of Brightlord Roshone. This week's match up: Troll vs Koloss! So, as with the Warg, I think that Tolkien has the standard on the troll, and I'll be deferring to the Lord of the Rings Mythology. Let's assume to start with that the troll is Olog-hai, so they don't turn into stone. Troll: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_(Middle-earth) And of course, our favorite blue buddies, the Koloss (Mistborn Spoilers inside the link): http://coppermind.net/wiki/Koloss I'm not against making this a group battle, and we also should determine the size of the Koloss fighting the troll. Just like last week, I'm going to withhold my vote until battle parameters have been agreed upon, and some discussion ensues. Also, I want to say that the more discussion we can get in, the more ideas I can draw from the thread to create a dynamic battle scene, and gives you the opportunity to find your ideas in the fight! I'm also open to taking ideas for future Monster Melee polls, so have at it! Edit: Fixed my messed up troll link that really confused me as to how I messed that up.
  5. Time for the second installment of Monster Melee! This time, it's going to be the fighting dead of Nalthis, the Lifeless, against the mysterious enigma of Roshar's Midnight Essence. Lifeless Lifeless Midnight Essence For this battle, we are going to assume for one that the Lifeless were average warriors before being awakened. I also want to explore a group battle in this one. Dalinar, as a very experienced warrior, was able to take out two Midnight Essence with a fire poker, but he was injured, almost critically, in the process. From this basis, I'm going to make the assumption that they would be slightly more apt in combat for the lifeless, and I'm going to pit five lifeless against three Midnight Essence. This is open to discussion, as well as how heavily armed the Lifeless are. To start, I think it would make it a fair fight to have two lifeless armed with swords, and the rest either unarmed, or blunt weapons. I'm personally withholding my vote until after we finalize battle parameters. As with last time, I'll write up a battle scene when the dust settles and it seems like discussion is over with a clear winner in the polls. I'll also try to include some of the battle mechanics we discuss, and I've got a fun theme that I'm going t try to expand on from last time. Edit: Can anyone teach me what I'm doing wrong to get these links to work? At this point I'm just so very confused as to why I can't get them to work. I'm trying to link the wiki pages to here.
