  1. Hey everyone, we're just trying to get a tally of all the awesome sharders who are going to be flashing their safehand at the WoRelease and how late people are going to be staying. We're just trying to get a better idea of what the night is going look like, and this will help us out with that a lot! Thanks for letting us know, guys!
  2. So, I think we've seen that as the Cosmere begins colliding, different forms of energy are able to be substituted, or at least supplemented for each other. If we assume that Vasher is indeed visitng Roshar, he has to be utilising some form of energy to remain alive. This is most likely Stormlight. Stormlight can be contained in spheres, and these spheres have a connection to spren. So, assuming that this energy is comparable across the Cosmere, how would something like Stormlight, which seems to be raw and isn't really able to be differentiated into different "types" of Stormlight, how would it impact magic users such as Allomancers? Would they be able to burn stormlight indiscriminately as a substitute for metals? Would they have to re-learn the ability to burn metals? Would their abilities transform completely from being on a different Shardworld? And if we assume that Stormlight serves as a raw energy, does that make it the most flexible of all "energy" magics that we've seen so far?
  3. Hey guys and gals, I recorded last night's signing with Brandon Sanderson in "Los Angeles" aka Huntington Beach =P Along with getting a Shardhunt code, an R.A.F.O card, and the audio of the whole event. I also may have received a new Ideal of the Knights Radiant? A reply from an Oathgate? Who knows! My book is signed: All in all it was a long, but fun night. I had a great time talking with the other fans and even Brandon himself. The audio I've attached is about 45 minutes long. Enjoy! ~sbi WoR_Tour-03052014_Part01.mp3 WoR_Tour-03052014_Part02.mp3 WoR_Tour-03052014_Part03.mp3
  4. As you may or may not have known (Oh who am I kidding, you're here, you know.), but Words of Radiance came out last week. What you may or may not have known is that so far, it's been selling REALLY well. So well, in fact, that it debuted at the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list. While this isn't his first time at the top of the list, this is the first time Brandon has hit the number one spot on the list for one of his solo books. Up to now, all three of the Wheel of Time books that he coauthored with the late Robert Jordan hit #1, but his solo books have hit as high as #7 (Way of Kings and Alloy of Law both hit that spot). All of us here at 17th Shard hoped that Brandon would finally have the honor on his own, and now he's got it! Many congratulations to Brandon, and all the rest of Team Sanderson! More details can be found here on Tor.com
  5. I looked through the Forums and did not see any threads about this. Hopefully this is a new Idea. Remember back in that Shallan flashback wherein she met Hoid, Shallan is trying to cheer up her family and gives one of her brothers a bunch of math problems. I do not have the quote at the moment, but when she looks back at him hard a work, she mentions something about predicting Highstorms using math. Did Shallan invent and/or start the practice of Stormwardens? If I remember correctly they are spoken of as being relatively new in WoK. If he figured out how to predict them mathematically and taught others, he could have been the founder of the Stormwardens, all because Shallan was trying to cheer up her family. The smallest of actions can have the largest of consequences.
  6. Okay I've stared this thread to see what people think of the character developments so far by the end of Wor. So Kaladin wow I'll admit I was a little frustrated by him in parts but looking back in wor his journey was a necessary one. He had a alot of pent up frustration and unresolved issues eating away at him by the end of wok and I think we can safely say that he really needed to figure out and grasp his role and place in the grand scheme of things that's not to say he's done growing as a person not by a long shot but he's getting there. I think we can safely say that his going home in the next book will be an intriguing development especially when it comes to the place and people of his childhood and seeing there reactions especially that of his parents who I'm guessing probably think he's dead. Now for Shallan gotta say wasn't to rapped up in her character in wok but boy did wor bring out the inner deemed child lol. She went from meek to evil genius and that tongue and sparky humorous later on was just awesome. The flash backs where a little predictable but I got the feeling they where less about explaining her character and more about setting up and laying a foundation for future events dun dun duhhhhhhh. By the end of the book she was definitely more capable as a person however I got the feeling that she was still uncertain about who she was but I get the feeling that that well be worked out in the next instalment soon enough. Adolin hmmmmm wasn't to thrilled with his development I thought was a decent enough character in the last book if a little closeminded. I noticed that with the duels and increasing danger and ever increasing odds that his chapter has turned into a real adrenalin junky the arena and his decision to continue in the four on one bout demonstraighted this. I thought his questioning his place in his relationship with Shallan just before he went postal on Sadias was a little showing and worrying but I guess we will just have to wait and watch to see how he deals with his actions. Okay so Im curious as to your opinions of there developments so far and how you think it may impact there relationships in the future.... Thoughs??????
  7. Okay so this is going to sound stupid but in the 4 thousand years that these people have had shardplate the only thing/sport they seem to use it in is duelling.... Shardplate Tennis people or rugby or grid iron...... Shardplate figure skating lol
  8. In Wor we see the amazing healing capability of both the Growth surge (the Regrowth from Lift's interlude) and the passive healing ability given by holding stormlight. Indeed stormlight has been seen to heal the severed soul links from wounds cause by a shardblade, and to straight up regrow limbs. Given that stormlight seems to be all about repairing damage and regenerating cells. What happens to the aging process in surgebinders that frequently use stormlight. Think about it, old age is just the cells in the body being heavily damaged and degraded over time due to the enviroment and cell division. Based on what we have seen so far in WoK and WoR, it should be trivial for stormlight to heal any damage to the body caused by aging. The only way i can see stormlight as not granting extended life or immortality is if it heals by restoring the body to the state that one believes themself to truely be. For example, a surgebinder will still age becuase they think they should still be aging. As in if the effects of stormlight healing are closely tied to the cognitive realm. Penny for your thoughts (not really, I don't have any pennies).
  9. So I'm hoping this topic can remain as civil as the last LDS connections in Brandon's work thread. I'm not even sure there's much for people to say, but when I was reading this book, I had two Mormon connections scream at me, so I had to get them out: 1. Kaladin's internal debate over whether to kill Elhokar: In the beginning of the Book of Mormon (1st Nephi 4), a righteous man (Nephi) is commanded to slay a man in order to bring back the scriptures for his family. A couple of quotes from this chapter seem to have direct parallels in Kaladin's struggle. First, Nephi comes upon Laban drunk and passed out in the streets, and is commanded by the Holy Spirit to kill him. It's interesting that Kaladin makes exactly the opposite choice. I listened to the audiobook, so I don't have the direct quote, but he says, "If I was going to kill him, I'd do it out in the open in front of everyone, not when he's lying there helpless and drunk." As Nephi is debating the morality of slaying this man with the Spirit, the Spirit says, "Behold the Lord slayeth the wicked to bring forth his righteous purposes. It is better that one man should perish than that a nation should dwindle and perish in unbelief." In addition to the obvious way that Kaladin goes directly counter to this statement, this idea is a major tie in to the Taravangian plot-line as well: who has the right to say a man's death is for the greater good? Anyway, as a Mormon reading this Kaladin scene, it seemed like it was constructed to directly contrast with this scriptural story, and it really enhanced my reading of it. 2. Dalinar's visions being exposed at the party: When Dalinar found the altered vision texts going around at the party, my mind instantly went to a story from early in the life of Joseph Smith. After translating the first 116 pages of the Book of Mormon, these pages were lent to an associate from whom they were then stolen. Smith received a revelation that stated he should not retranslate these pages because his enemies would alter the previous translation, so that the comparison would discredit him. I dunno, maybe this is a tenuous stretch, but it instantly jumped to my (Mormon) mind in reading this scene with Dalinar being discredited with a slightly altered version of the truth. What do you think? Not sure where I'm going with this, but wanted to share in case anyone else is interested.
  10. I have nobody to talk to as I read WoR so I don't want to have a heavy discussion with possible spoilers as I'm not yet finished with the book (so I hope people REALLY read this) but here are some rambles: Anyway, Damnation being Braize makes some sense but I like how it was spelled out for us. Braize must be a terrible place if that's where Odium is currently chilling. Also makes me wonder why the Heralds remained Heralds for so long if they're forced to stay on Braize between Desolations (correct?) so if they travel between Braize and Roshar regularly, I suspect they travel through the Cognitive Realm and should (key word: should) be Cosmere-aware? Maybe. And if Braize is Damnation, I figured Ashyn COULD be the Tranquiline Halls but I severely doubt that. Braize makes sense; Ashyn doesn't. So I have no idea where they are right now. If any of this is debunked in WoR, please don't tell me. I'm fine with no replies; I just wanted to ramble to people who will read and actually understand what I'm talking about. I'm on page 515 right now and I'm enjoying the book very very much.
  11. So I went to the Seattle signing today, and am here to bring some tidbits of info. Some others from 17th shard were there, and I think recording, so more/better information may be coming later. He read from a novella where people get powers after getting sick, and they live on a floating upside down city, so the sky is the surface of the planet. The planet has been damaged, with lava flowing on the surface. I asked him 3 questions: Q. Has Rock always been a third son? A. No (note, I got distracted by my other questions, so I am not 100% sure that he did say no, but I am about 85% sure I failed I know, I am hoping the sharder who was listening was recording or remembers better than I do.) Q. Are the pools on the Horneater peaks shardpools? A. RAFO Q. Any hints on the chapter 84 code? A. There is a key in the book. Also, someone asked if the Ryshadium were a result of spren symbiosis, Brandon hedged and said that investiture is involved.
  12. I finished the book last night (I'm still trembling), and as I read I watched theory after theory either click into place, or be refuted. I've only been active for a little while here, and so haven't read all the theories linked to the Stormlight Archive, but it sure has been fun tracking through them. For the sake of those who are just digging into the depths of the Stormlight Archive, I propose using this thread as an index to those theories; perhaps with a brief summary and a proved, disproved, or RAFO status. Some theories have been very explicitly confirmed or denied in the book, some have been more subtle. I like the idea of this thread being a place where the theories that future readers won't even wrestle with (since they'll just immediately start the next book) can have their history and the homework and speculation that went on in them preserved, instead of being buried in the forums. Discussions regarding theories should take place on their specific boards. This is just an index. It will work best if you add your espoused theories as then you can edit their status yourself, but I will do my best to begin curating them from the boards. [Mods, feel free to correct or redirect this if something like this already exists... this would perhaps be more appropriate in the general Stormlight Archive forum?]
  13. So.... Since there are a lot of 17th Sharders in Seattle, I think it would be fun if we do something fun at the signing this tour. Anyone else interested? I know that I am in and my friends Mel and Holly who will be attending are up for anything too. I am not an ideas person so the best I have come up with so far is to make posters like it is a sporting event or rock concert. I am very crafty though so if you have an idea, there is a good chance I can execute it. If you think posters are a good idea, what should the posters say? #1 FANDERSON!!! is one that I came up with. Brandon's writings have brought a lot of joy to my life and I just feel like I want to give something back in the way of making a signing different or more cool. Plus us Seattle fans have to represent, right?
  14. It's finally up ya'll. I'd actually caution preordering right now because the art displayed is still the V2 version with buff Non-Rambodin. And in my experience the cover art available when you buy is what you're stuck with on Audible. My Addadon's Gate and Daylight war audiobook covers in the app are just text because that's how it was when I bought them, despite audible later adding the cover art. No matter if I re-download or even re-install the app it never changes. Ohh my God, it's listed as 46 hours! I have a business trip planned on release day so I'm spending the majority of my time listening up front. I'm relieved this is completed.
  15. Now, we know that Kaladin and Shallan are Surgebinders. We also know that Kaladin could do with a sparring partner, and, as stated in one of the preview chapters, that partner should be one of equal or greater skill/strength. Well, that'd be hard to do, but perhaps he could spar with Shallan—sort of, anyway—and she could practice her lightweaving powers too. By making light replicas of herself holding... ...a Shardblade, perhaps? Be extra tricky to find out who the real one is. He couldn't just let the swords fly, because if it were real he'd die.
  16. Not even a week left! Can anyone else see... anticipationspren... forming all around them...? Edit: This is aimed at those whom have not yet recieved a copy of the book. Some of you, I do realize, are lucky and are probably seeing victoryspren, joyspren, et cetera, after having received a copy of the book already.
  17. When Kaldin spoke the Words, "I will protect those who cannot protect themselves," we rose to our feet and roared with excitement! When Lift spoke "I will remember those who have been forgotten," we shed tears and begged for more! Speaking the Ideals of the Knights Radiant have become some of my favorite moments in modern literature. I can't wait to see more Ideals! And so, dear friends, this poll. Who do you think will get to have their shining moment next? And please, drop a post to let us know why you chose them, how it might happen, and what the words might be!
  18. This is my first post, so I'm going to have to ask you to stick with me here. Honor, aka the Almighty, as we all know, is dead, splintered by Odium. My first thought was 'Oh, then the Spren must be his splinters.' WRONG. The spren have been around during the time of the Almighty, as shown by one point in the book (possibly a Words of Radiance spoiler) This says that Surgebinders existed during the time the Almighty was alive, and thus so did the spren (Nahel Bond). However, that does not mean the Spren are not -of- the Allmighty. I believe that all spren are a form of the Almighty's investiture in the world, as they seem to have all -bonded- with specific emotions/elements/abilities. WoR spoiler Now, second part of this theory. If the spren are all from Honor, what does that leave Cultivation? Well, that leaves him with Shinovar. Think about it. Unlike what Ruin and Preservation did, fighting for power, Honor and Cultivation decided to split up the land, they made a deal of sorts. Honor would get the land and shape it any way he wanted so long as it didn't mess with Cultivation's area. Thus the mountains around Shinovar so that Cultivation's land wasn't effected by the Highstorms. This would explain many things. First of all, it explains the lack of spren in Shinovar, since Honor has no sway there. Second, it would explain why the Shinese revere farmers and hate warriors, since warriors have to do with Honor, and farming has to do with Cultivation. Thirdly, it might explain the Shinese reverence of rock. The mountains that separate Shinovar from the rest of Roshar could be a holy symbol of their god's protection. Small side theory, I think Cultivation might actually be a man, since at the end of WoK, when Taravangian is talking to Szeth, he says, "Sometimes I wonder if the Lifebrother himself sent you to me." I know the Lifebrother is a nickname for one of the Heralds, and the Herald might have been an Edgedancer, which would explain Lifebrother, you know, growing plants and healing people could have to do with Life, but that is just a side theory. (thanks for the comments. I believe the Lifebrother might still be a Herald, though not Cultivation, and I do feel slightly stupid for posting this part.) WoR spoiler WoR spoiler Szeth's people, under the command of Cultivation, who I believe not only is still alive, but occasionally communicates with his/her people, gave Szeth a Shardblade as mentioned in the before quoted conversation with Taravangian. Not only does this mean Kaladin has the potential to be an immensely more powerful Windrunner but also gives an implication that the Nightwatcher is Cultivation. I say this because perhaps Szeth wished for the powers of a Radiant, and so got Windrunner powers, but in return for the great cost of being eternally enslaved, doomed to kill, and yet seemingly absolved of all sins he is forced to commit, for this is the price their god made him commit. Any thoughts?
  19. As I've stated before I'll be live blogging as I read along to WoR when it's released. My style isn't bullet point reactions, I just kinda talk about how the chapter makes me feel and take my mind wandering in silly directions. I've been writing up the posts for the preview chapters ahead of time to get myself warmed up and have just come up with a scenario that I had to post. In Jasnah's prologue when she grabs the cognitive essence of the entire Kholin Castle I imagined what if she had enough juice to accidentally soulcast the whole damnation thing into blood. Here's what I cam up with. ROSHAR TIMES HEADLINE: Hundreds drown in blood castle. Tragedy struck as a Hemavalanche destroyed the Kholinar seat of power and home to the Royal family of Alethkar. No cause is yet know for the Crimson Tide but a suspicious Shin dressed in red robes was seen surfing away safely. The thought of this has been making me chuckle to myself for a day and had to share it around. Anyone else have some Roshar based comedy that could only ever be understood on the forums?
  20. Until now, we've only had rumors and speculations to go on, but my latest source have just confirmed the inevitable truth: Brightlord Adolin Kholin and Brightness Danlan Morakotha are no longer in an item! And they did not part on good terms! That's right! It seems that our happy couple is no more! The exact reason for this break-up is vague, but Brightlord Adolin himself helpfully informed us that "this one was not his fault" and "things she'd said to her friends...", but refused to elaborate further. On Brightness Danlan's end, all I got was stoney silence and fierce glares. However, by this exchange alone, we can kind of form an idea of what happened. So, someone blabbered too much in the relationship, eh? Well, these things happen. As a highprince's heir, Brightlord Adolin is indeed privy to some important family secrets, but since Brightness Danlan still serve in the Kholin household as one of their primary scribes, it's unlikely that it was anything official. But if it's not official, then does that mean it's... personal? Now what juicy stuff have she told others that Adolin wanted so desperately to keep a secret? It must be huge! Enough to end a whole meaningful relationship over! What is it? Is it embarrassing? I must know! It must have been awkward! ...But probably not as awkward as being face-to-face on a daily basis with your ex. By and by, great job there, pretty boy! To find out, I've talked to some of her friends, but they all shut me down with the usual "read and find out" so they were no help at all. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we'll know more until March. This is a sad hour indeed. As we all know, Brightlord Adolin is not exactly the most loyal lover, but when Brightness Danlan first came into the scene, we all thought thought, "here is a clever and firm woman who can finally tame our favorite womanizer", but apparently, even she has folded like so many others before her. Alas, Brightness Danlan, we had such high hopes for you. Perhaps you'll make a comeback one day, but the odds are not in your favor... Sayonara señorita, we'll miss you! But don't celebrate yet, ladies. It seems our most eligible bachelor just can't stay still for long. There are already rumors abound that he has since engaged himself to another woman, a foreign lady of high birth. Out of the furnace and into the fire, huh? Tune in next time when we speculate about this other woman, what role she played in this break-up, and how much we hate her guts! Also, I'll show you how to turn all those excess cat hair into a home-knit sweater!
  21. We finally get to see the full HD glory of the cover on Tor. It looks for the most part exactly like the first except for the Kaladin stuff. It might be worth it to put both side-by-side and see if there were any changes to Szeth Son Son Vallano, Truthless of Shinovar. Edit: The only thing that pops out new to me is the insignia on the shield of Szeth's slain enemies. It looks like he's killed mostly Light-eyes, since the pile is full of fully armored folks and mostly swords. Can anyone make anything out of the shield, It looks like two X's surrounding.. an eye?
  22. So, haven't seen this up anywhere else, but came across this in my recent rereading in WoK and with what's been seen in WoR so far - interesting possibilities are afoot at the Circle K. (Otherwise known as Shadesmar? Is that how Bill and Ted did it?) In Shallan's chapter of WoR, we are given a much better idea/definition of Spren and their relation to the Cognitive realm, and humans than previously: Now, comparing the idea of spren as "living ideas" with this from "Wandersail": Now, Hoid may just be being cryptic here about the way he stole his identity from someone. But there seems to be just a little too much of a correspondence to Shallan and Jasnah's discussion. We know Hoid is intimately involved with and expert at manipulating Shadesmar to travel between worlds. What could this mean for him, if he originated somehow in the Cognitive Realm? This would be an interesting idea (see what I did there? ), as Hoid could then be literally the embodiment of storytelling - which would explain his penchant for being a spreader of knowledge and tales... Ok, all you who are smarter than me in the ways of the Cosmere - Discuss!
  23. http://www.tor.com/stories/2014/01/excerpt-brandon-sanderson-words-of-radiance-chapter-six-eight-and-nine Enjoy!
  24. Very quick, but I hope provocative... The Soldiers in the flashback scene in WoR seem to have stormlight faintly and people have speculated that they are proto-Radiants or that the KR in the scene has somehow enowed them with stormlight. But how about this... Those men do not have a spren... they are like everyone's favourite truthless. Discuss.
