  1. Hey y'all, Wildcard again. I'm practicing my game vfx skills for my portfolio and I thought Spren would be a perfect subject to make if anyone had suggestions if their favorites. It doesn't have to be a spren, but a magic effect like a seon, or the goop in elantris/soul stamp.
  2. From the album: All Spren with Descriptions

So much gray, red, and blue. Purple and green are underrepresented.
  3. Shardpenguin

    Spren

From the album: All Spren with Descriptions

Much harder to tell what they are without color.. so many orbs, ribbons, and smoke
  4. So I had a associate who owns a laser cutter cut out a pendent I designed. Using a font for woman's script I wrote I love you then my wife's name and then added her favorite order at the bottom. They turned out pretty good I used a couple of different woods to see what would look best. Next I will do some sanding and I'm going to try putting colored resin in the light woods to see how that looks. They only problem I see with this is that the walls between some of the script are very thin so it may not work out like I'm hoping. But I wanted to share so other people could benefit from the idea. I used inkscape (free program) to make the svg file. I will post more pictures when I'm finished to show how they turned out. For reference the woods from left to right are birch, padouk, and eastern maple.
  5. Heyo! So my partner and I have decided to embark on a little collaboration project to help us hone our craft! It's called Kaladin Stormblessed - Bridge four' and the goal is to create the character of Kaladin (Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series) from concepting phase all the way to animation! If you'd like to follow the process, you can find it here: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/4ZeJq Get a look at the complete phase one, and keep a look out for more as we make our way through the phases and document it as we go! No Idea where else to post this project on here, so for now I'll leave it here! Perhaps post some up dates in this thread as well.
  6. I have a woodworking project, and I am thinking of inlaying glyphs from the stormlight archive into some of the pieces. I would cut out the inlays and mill the pockets with an inexpensive CNC mill, so I'm looking for something relatively simple. I need glyphs for Forest/Wood, Mountain/Metal/Ore, Hills/Clay/Brick, Pasture/Sheep/Wool, Field/Farm/Wheat/Grain, and maybe Desert. For wood, metal, and brick, I'm thinking of palah, kak, and tanat, respectively. Though tanat is pretty complicated. Palah could also fit with wheat/grain. There aren't that many glyphs listed in the coppermind, so I might just be out of luck, unless a 17th shard scholar is interested in phonetically constructing glyphs. And if someone is interested in stylizing glyphs for this purpose, I would be eternally grateful. To be clear, this is purely a personal art project. I will not be selling anything.
  7. From the album: The Work Of A Fish

I was bored. I made some art. Hope you like it.
  8. This isn't as much of a theory as it is a notable connection, but here it goes: I always wondered why the Mists in Scadrial never went into people's homes at night, seemingly disappearing at a house's thresholds. But then, I noticed something interesting: At the end of Oathbringer, when the Everstorm passes over Urithiru, Odium speaks to Taravangian, telling him to "open the window" several times before being able to speak with him "in person" as he does with Venli. Why would a Shard, even one trapped in Braize, need someone as insignificant as Taravangian to open a window? That seems almost fey-like from what is basically a god, and it got me thinking: could this be linked to the Mists back in Scadrial? What do y'all think?
  9. Good Day My name is Daniean and I live in Jamaica. I've read on the forum for years but I've never posted, I think it about time I stepped out of the shadows. Like many, I got introduced to Brandon Sanderson about ten years ago when I heard he was finishing The Wheel of Time. I took up Mistborn and read it and it was immediately my favorite book since The Great Hunt. I absolutely loved it. After that, I tried to get my hands on anything Sanderson wrote. When I heard he was planning an opus long series I was the happiest person on Jamrock. So far it has felt like Brandon interviewed me then wrote Stormlight to be the perfect book series for my taste. No interview does not cut it. the man must have read my mind because the stormlight Archive scratches itches that I didn't even know i have. Any way you can get a sent a sense of my taste by the books I've read. 1 The Lord of the Rings The Hobbit 2 by J.R.R. 10. We wanted to do a "short" episode of us discussing the reveal of the novella that will be out prior to Rhythm of War, Dawnshard! But then we blabbed. We blabbed a lot about a lot of things. Things we know basically nothing about. But now you will also know the nothing we know about Dawnshards and Aimians together. After all, the real Dawnshards are the friends we met along the way. For news and info on Dawnshard, see here: https://www.17thshard.com/news/brandon-news/so-the-novella-is-called-dawnshard-r579/ This week we have Eric (Chaos), Ian (Weiry), Evgeni (Argent), and Joshua (jofwu). Most importantly this episode was edited by the wonderful FeatherWriter, who just did incredible on this one. This episode also was a giant pain to render, so I think really the Sleepless just didn't want you to hear our totally legit and not ridiculous theories here. Next week we won't have our usual Shardcast, but this Sunday we will have a 5000 subscriber Q&A on our Twitch, https://twitch.tv/17th_shard at 11am Pacific where we will answer your questions! The next Shardcast will be two weeks from today. 13. Update 7/13: Tonight Brandon put out Stormlight 4 Update #9 which says much of what we say here, elaborating that Isaac and Peter have "months" of work left to do on the book. He also said the Stormlight novella's title will be announced tomorrow, and there's a livestream Thursday. He reiterated plans we've reported here: Songs of the Dead revision this week, then after, Skyward 3, and Lost Metal starting January 1. After that, then it's Stormlight 5 time, which will be roughly the halfway point of the cosmere. Last night, Brandon finished his work on Rhythm of War, the fourth Stormlight Archive novel. On a screenshot saying "The End," you can see the word count is 459,629 words, which is a bit longer than Oathbringer's 454,000 words. Brandon shared in a Facebook comment that there are 112 chapters, plus interludes, and the prologue and epilogue. Brandon also said in his post that though the book releases in full on November (specifically, November 17th), preview chapters are coming before then. His tweet says "preview chapters soon." Hooray! Now, in previous news posts, some commenters have asked why they can't just read the ebook of this next week, so I thought I'd explain some things to the best of my ability as to what is happening next for the book. Please, anyone in the comments who know more than I do, comment away, I'd love to know more! Though Brandon is done, there's a lot more work to be done from people on Brandon's team as well as Tor. First up will be typesetting the Word document to look like an actual book. Then there's proofreading that needs to be done. There are Tor proofreaders, Peter (Brandon's assistant), but also there is a "gamma read" which is a proofread pass to a bit of a wider set of people, similar to the beta read. These books are really long, and even with so many eyes on the book, there are still typos in the final result. This is a super important phase. Nowadays, with Dragonsteel Entertainment being a reasonably big operation, Brandon doesn't need to micromanage this step, and Peter can deal with this. So while Brandon is done, the text isn't quite done yet. What else? Well, we need the art to all be finalized. I'm not exactly sure when the art needs to be turned in, but with every Stormlight book, there's tons of in-world art. Art takes a long time. I imagine plenty has been started already, but it might not be done quite yet. After all, we still don't have the US cover art. But I imagine the sheer weight of interior art takes a long time. Next up, there's the audiobook. Over half of Starsight's sales were audiobooks, if I recall correctly, so this is likely a large fraction of the audience. Oathbringer's audiobook is 55 hours, 5 minutes. I have to imagine actually recording it, doing multiple takes of sections, and editing it takes a very long time to record these mammoth audiobooks. Coming off editing Shardcast taking triple to quadruple the time for me to edit those, I have to believe the audiobooks are a huge undertaking. Of course, the audiobook can be recorded once the text is finalized, and once the art is done, printing can begin. You might still ask why you can't read the book after the text is finished. That's a fair question! But it occurred to me: the New York Times Bestseller list is a huge deal for advertising a book. From my understanding, you want to release all the editions of the book at the same time so they all count to the bestseller list. It would be a bad look to have the fourth Stormlight book not be a #1 bestseller. So, there are some important economic and industry reasons why we can't read it immediately. It sucks, but it is what it is. I know the wait has been brutal, but this is actually very fast for us to get the book out by November, and lots of people are putting in a lot of effort to get it to you. Still, we'll get preview chapters soon, which will be great! In Brandon's recent newsletter, he released a brand-new chapter of Rhythm of War, and if you sign up for the newsletter, it'll be sent to you! You can discuss it in our Rhythm of War spoiler board! 14. Drawing of Rysn because I love her and I need to practice realism. I don't do realism that often, and I still need to work on facial proportions and shading hair, but overall I'm pleased with how it turned out. As I was looking at reference pictures for Chiri-chick I realized... scorpions are really storming ugly. That is all. Also the picture is kinda blurry.

  15. From Hoid's story, we know that the Shin came to Roshar, presumably following the destruction of Ashyn. Do we know if the Alethi and other peoples are descended from the Shin, or were they already on Roshar? The Shin physical differences suggest either a very distant past diversion or a separate migration/origin. I could not find a clear answer either in the books or the Arcanum.
  16. Leadership in literature has often been used as an effective educational tool for students of leadership. Books that are often sighted as leadership texts include: -Ender’s Game -Starship Troopers -Once an Eagle The Way of Kings’ focus on leadership should place it strongly on the list. Whether it’s Kaladin building trust, culture and cohesion or Dalinar’s adherence to the codes and setting a standard for his army. In addition you have Shallan and Jasnah’s mentee/mentor relationship, or the antithesis of good leadership in Sadeas. I’ve begun using WoK with my team to use some of the conceptual works we have read like Start with Why, CliftonStrengths/Strengths Based Leadership, Radical Candor, Leaders Eat Last, and the Infinite Game (Heavy in Simon Sinek works I know) and show how the characters apply the concepts in the novel. Just wanted to see if anyone wanted to share their favorite leadership quotes from Stormlight. Thanks Everyone!
  17. Tor.com's eBook Club is giving away The Way of Kings, the first Stormlight Archive book, on May 4th. It's super easy, all you need to do is sign up for Tor.com's eBook Club mailing list and you'll receive it on May 4th. Nice! (Update: turns out, this was a very popular event and Tor's site crashed for a bit, so they are extending the deal for another day through May 5th. The site seems to be doing better now.) It's only available for US and Canada (since Tor only has rights to distribute it there). Cosmere.es Interview with Brotherwise Games on Call to Adventure: Stormlight Also this week, the wonderful Spanish fansite for the cosmere, cosmere.es, did an interview with one of the founders of Brotherwise Games on creating the Call to Adventure: Stormlight board game. You can check it out here: I bring this up, because there is some phenomenal card art that they unveiled. You can check out the full gallery here. Brotherwise Games got all sorts of incredible artists in the community and are very proud of their card art, and they should be! For example, check out this Hoid: Art by Ari Ibarra Check out this image of the Honorblades left behind in the prelude of Stormlight Archive: Art by Antti Hakosaari SO COOL. That image is especially cool because Brotherwise Games worked with Isaac Stewart at Dragonsteel to make these canonically accurate Honorblades. You can see the Radiant order glyphs on each of them (as well as Surge glyphs on some). In case you'd like a labeled one saying which Herald's Honorblades these are: Cool! What do you think of all the art?
  18. Stormlight is a pristine, glowing, mist-like, mysterious source of essentially God-given energy. Image by ShardShaper Maybe it is just energy. Or is it matter? Is common Stormlight gaseous? If so, what are its melting and boiling points? Maybe the frost that occurs when large amounts of Stormlight are used has to do with chemical properties--maybe it deposes onto clothing as it is released from the body. The frost doesn't have to be ice. Or perhaps Stormlight is not an element but a compound containing hydrogen and oxygen, which when used for Surgebinding reacts, somehow eliminating heat energy and producing water (H20) as a byproduct which is then frozen? Well what if those on Roshar don't breathe oxygen...but rather the low-concentration, less compressed Stormlight in the air? This would explain why one doesn't necessarily need to breathe when infused. Of course Stormlight could well be energy--this would better explain why gemstones (and other things, of course, but especially gemstones) can be infused by it. Maybe it is an odd sort of energy that consumes heat when doing work rather than releasing it like most energy. Then again I wouldn't be surprised if gaseous, liquid, solid, or even plasma states of Stormlight were all involved in Roshar's magic system (plasma especially would be somewhat understandable). Besides, it is curious to me that condensation appears on a recently summoned shardblade and that frost forms as Stormlight is surged. Yet it doesn't even have to be baryonic matter (the familiar matter of the Universe - neutrons, protons, electrons). While Scandrial's magic system--among others--indicates that baryonic matter is probably present in the Cosmere, there is no stopping the idea of unimagined and unobserved-in-real-world matter exists in such a fictional universe. Which--come to think of it--is probably the exact nature of Stormlight. Not familiar energy, not typical matter, but something entirely different. I really don't know. I think it's worth some thought, and it would be a curious topic when it comes to converting investiture, soulcasting, lashings, etc. Maybe I'll have an update on this. Liquid Stormlight, at least, would be rather intriguing. I also think the theory that Rosharians breathe Stormlight is noteworthy, or at least interesting. But I suppose it's most plausible that Stormlight is just something else entirely created by Honor to conduct and host Investiture. Regardless, the idea of Stormlight as an element or compound is pretty cool. Sorry about the word vomit
