I finally joined the 17th Shard!!! I've read both the Mistborn trilogies, the three Stormlight Archives, Warbreaker, and Arcanum Unbounded. Outside of the Cosmere, I've read the Reckoners and Legion. I can't wait for when he decides to write Warbreaker 2, but it sadly doesn't look like its going to be anytime soon.

this is probably one of the pettiest questions ever asked on this forum but what is the evolutionary advantage of Thaylen eyebrows ? if you want to build a grounded world you must have explanations ready for nitpickers like me ps im only on page 200 of words of radiance please do not spoil anything later then that if the question is answered later please inform me

So yeah. We've seen a bunch of Radiants use different weapons, from Shardforks to Shardblades to Shardspears. So why are all of the Shardweapons from the Recreance in blade form? It stands to reason they also would have had their weapons of choice. What is the reason that all of their Shards turned into blades, then? Is sword-form some kind of a basic spren form? Is it cultural (and why would there be such an overpowering cultural influence on swords opposed to other weapons, with no room for deviation?) Did the spren revert to sword-form when the bond was broken?

So.... spoiler alert..... if Dalinar has bonded with the stormfather, and the stormfather is who infuses gems with light, and if Dalinar can control his new spren enough, can he change the way highstorms interact with the world? Ex. frequency, strength etc the point I am trying to get to is if he can learn to exert a certain level of control through his nahel bond he can essentially control the amount of stormlight given (which would control one of the most valuable things on roshar, currency) he could change and possibly crash the economy based on his will alone. also does this mean that he can hold out long enough that all surgebinders starve and go powerless? Same with shardplate? Does he get an unlimited amount of stormlight directly from his spren? Does he have unlimited bondsmithing potential while destroying the economy and making all magical forms of attack and defense (besides shardblades) useless? No radiant police force to stop him after they run out of stormlight.... It is a very good thing that Dalinar is a level headed, well rounded, honorable man.

So I was re-watching Back to the Future, as one does, and thinking about what a disappointment it was that we don't have widespread hoverboard use even though we should've years ago and I realized what someone needs to do is go to Roshar and convince either artifabrians or windrunners to create hoverboards since artifabrians could use reversers to make the hoverboard float and windrunners could half lash a board to the sky in order to make it weightless. The only problem would be getting the lashed board to move. But with a fabrial, you could make a controller of sorts that you can move around to make the hoverboard do the opposite.

This completely insane theory occurred to me when I was watching the allomantic metals chart on the coppermind after reading this thread. So my theorie is this: there are actually 16 surges and each knight radiant gets three surges. So I think there are sixteen surges because there are sixteen shards of adonalsium, that alone is not enough evidence. But, there are sixty-four allomantic metals which divided by four gives us the modern metals, the god metals and two more sets of metals( the only MB books I read are the first three and like three chapters of wax and wayne, but I suspect that one of these sets is made off of alloys of the metal that gave the first mistborns their powers) now if you take the modern metals you can divide them into four groups of four metals: the physical the mental(cognitive), the enhancement (I believe spiritual realm because it deals with power?) and the temporal ( I feel like time exists in a different way in the Cosmere. In earth time doesn't really exist in the sense that allows one to time travel, because what happened a long time ago isn't happening anymore. But in the Cosmere this isn't true, the things that happened a long time ago are still happening somewhen. This is why the temporal metals exist even though there is no temporal realm). Each quadrant has four types of metal, again we divide four by four giving us: the pushing metals, the pulling metals, the external metals and the internal metals. As I have said above this information alone is not enough, this could be scadrial's magic system, however one must keep in mind that there are sixteen shards of Adonalsium(which can also be made into groups of four: spiritual, physical, temporal and cognitive which can be further divided by four etc.etc.). And preservation refers to 16 as the number humankind could never forget. Now, you may have noticed that the Cosmere is somewhat obsessed with the number 16 and therefore 4 and 2 (4×4=16 and 2×2×2×2=16 and whatnot). Now, if you try to break down the number 10 (I think it's called making it into factors or something but I didn't learn maths in English so I don't know), you get 5×2. I still think there were 10 orders of knights radiant and all of the other 10s. Another thing that makes me believe there are actually sixteen surges is that the surges weren't listed by a sliver. In HoA harmony states that the lord ruler gained a lot of knowledge ( regarding investiture and its uses) when he ascended, and he was the one that made the metals chart. I don't know what the heralds are but I don't think they have as much investiture as a sliver, has khriss states in the scadrial essay that scadrial is the planet where it is relatively easier for regular people to come into contact with vast amounts of investiture and the heralds were once regular people (I think it's in one of the first chapters of WoK). This is where @glamdring804 's theory comes in. I believe we have seen opposing surges, however they are seperate surges. I also think that knights radiant get three surges one set of external/internal surges and an extra. I'm not sure if the surges can be accounted for has primery, secondary and tertiary in the sense that one is more powerful than the others. Another one of the reasons I also think that the kr get three surges is because the heralds have three attributes. When they became the ten fools their main attribute was corrupted. I think they still have their main attributes buried somewhere because darkness doesn't do anything to lift (after he admits he has failed) because let's face it, lift committed many (minor) crimes, judgement would drive darkness to at least fine lift or something, but justice acknowledges that these (minor)crimes were committed for a good cause. And the corrupted attribute is almost opposite to the main attribute. So, I will now give you my opinion on the surges individually and how they should be organized. I think they were listed incorrectly due to vorinistic bias. -Adhesion- "The surge of pressure and vaccum" I'm pretty sure pressure and vaccum aren't the same thing in fact they are opposites. When something is under pressure its being pushed outward trying to expand and uncompress, while something that is in vaccum is being pulled inward trying to fill the void. I think that this surge was listed incorrectly. And windrunners clearly only use vaccum when they use a full lashing. I have no idea what the surge of pressure would do. Maybe OB will shed some light on this topic. -Gravitation- "The surge of gravity" more like the surges of gravity. Basic lashings could be pushing and the reverse lashings could be pulling because they give objects a gravitational pull( or it might be the other way around I don't know). -Division- "The surge of destruction and decay" I think that this is also two surges in one. Decay and destruction aren't the same thing. Decay happens slowly( wherever this one is in the "surges chart" its where ruin should be listed under in the "shards chart"), whereas destruction is more immediate and brutal. I think that decay is the internal surge and desctrution the external one. I also think that these are temporal surges has something can only decay, heal and grow in time; destruction doesn't take that much time but its clearly external to decay. -Abrasion- "The surge of friction" This is only one surge. I think this is one of the physical surges. And its the edgedancer's "extra", well its not really an extra but I think I already said that. -Progression- "The surge of growth and healing, or regrowth" So I believe this are two different surges and that they are the edgedancers main surges. -Illumination- "The surge of light, sound, and various waveforms" So, this is only one surge, its the lightweavers main surge, and its the one that the truthwatchers get for having its opposing surge. In WoR we learn that illumination's internal surge enables someone to witness, in some way, things that are happening or maybe that have already happened or will happen. @Glamdring804 said I at first thought this was related to Shallan's mnemonic ability, something all Lightweavers are known to have. However, sprocket44 on Reddit pointed out that this might actually be another application of Illumination. Specifically, it seems to be similar to how Renarin, a Truthwatcher, "sees" things. I think this is another surge entirely and I'll just call it the "truthwatching surge" for now ( if you come up with any name suggestions for the surges that have no names please tell me, because "the surge used for reverse lashings" doesn't quite roll off the tongue) -Transformation- "The surge of soulcasting" This is only one surge, i think it may be cognitive. -Transportation- "The surge of motion and realmatic transition" I think that this is two surges in one.Motion and realmatic transition ( the real transportation surge I think ). The fact that motion and realmatic transition were assumed to be one surge means that elsecallers are the only order of kr that can use motion or realmatic transition, because they are not on the same quadrant on the "surges chart". -Cohesion- "The surge of strong axial interconnection" This is only one surge and its opposite is clearly "the surge of strong axial interconnections". In fact that they are not considered one surge means there is no order of kr that has them as a main surge. -Tension- "The surge of strong axial interconnection" This is just one surge, and its opposite is cohesion what this surge does I have no idea. This is how I think the surges should be organized ("surges chart"), they are 16: -the surge used for reverse lashings- the spiritual external pushing surge. -Vaccum- the spiritual internal pulling surge. -The surge used for basic lashings- the spiritual external pushing surge. -Pressure- the spiritual internal pushing surge. -Healing- the tempuraal internal pushing or pulling surge. -Growth- the temporal external pushing or pulling surge (whichever is healing's, this means the if healing is the pushing surge then growth is the pushing surge but, if healing is the pulling surge then growth is the pulling surge) -Decay- the temporal internal pushing or pulling surge -Destruction- the temporal external pushing or pulling surge (whichever is decay's) -Illumination- the cognitive external pushing or pulling surge -"Truthwatching surge"- the cognitive internal pushing or pulling surge (whichever is illumination's) -Transformation- the cognitive external pushing or pulling surge. -Transportation- the cognitive internal pushing or pulling surge (whichever is transformation) -Coheson- the physical internal pushing or pulling surge -Motion- the physical external pushing or pulling surge (whichever is cohesion's) -Tension- the physical internal pushing or pulling surge -Abrasion- the physical external pushing or pulling surges (whichever is tension's). This is the kr orders surges (the orders that we know): -order name- External surge/internal surge--extra surge -Windrunners- Reverse lashing surge/vaccum--basic lashing surge. -Lightweavers- Illumination/"truthwatching" surge-- transformation -Elsecallers- Transportation/transformation--motion -Edgedancers- Growth/healing--abrasion. -Truthwatchers- "Truthwatching surge"/illumination -- ???? To preface, part of this theory is predicted on another on of my theories that stone can hold investiture. You can see more information here, but it is on the Oathbringer spoiler board so be properly forewarned before following the link, Oathbringer spoilers inside. So I think, assuming that isn't incorrect, that Cultivation is similar to Autonomy in that her investiture is tied to sunlight. First off, it just makes sense thematically. Cultivation is usually tied to farming and the growth of plants, and photosynthesis and sunlight is central to this process. Going into actual evidence though, I've got a few things I want to present. The first is the most obvious. I'm fairly sure it's a general consensus that Dalinar's vision at the end of WoR is from Cultivation. The beginning is in darkness, the end of the description is heavily based in sensations of warmth and light. Next, and I went into this a little bit with my other thread, we have Tien and his rocks, and how they always cheer up Kaladin. It think that Tien had a naturally close connection to Cultivation and was able to somehow find rocks that we're able to store her investiture in it. I won't provide the examples of the rocks cheering Kaladin up, but instead, the specific quote where Tien mentions the light changing the rocks color and illuminating strata. I think it's very like Brandon to hide the truth in both a flippant comment and the mouth of a babe. Finally, and I think this the strongest evidence, we come to Szeth at Urithuru. In Dalinar's vision in WoK, the radiant mentions that fighting hurts the soul, or at least that's the assumption I draw from the passage. This brings me to Szeth, where we see a clear demonstration of the damage over the course of the books. This brings us to Urithuru. Now while it is only one line, I think it is a fair conjecture to assume that the reason the damage recedes in the sunlight is because if cultivations influence in the context of other clues. Any thoughts?

I wanted to put onto paper screen a few thoughts that have been rolling around my head, mostly about the different beliefs put forth by Szeth in Stone Shamanism, but also reinforced by how Listeners treat their dead. I want to bring up some of the relevant source material first. Szeth, WoK The Shin in WoK I think with this in mind, we can at least make some kind of supposition that stone can be analogous to metal or gemstones in some way. I'm not sure I'm entirely in the "Odium is invested in stone" camp yet, but I think that at least stone can capture spiritual connection. We have a couple pieces of evidence for this. First off, I want to point out a section from Szeth above. "His soul would be given to the stones upon his death." There's another piece of evidence from WoR. He states that he is bound to an Oathstone. Up until very recently, I have been under the impression that Szeth does what he does from personal honor, but we don't know much about Stone Shamanism. I believe that his soul was literally bound to his Oathstone. There's this segment from Nalan post the battle of Narak This implies that if there was a bond made between him and an Oathstone, it would have been broken by his death. (I don't know how much of this would be different with the updates, I've got the originals.) Without Nalan's intervention, I assume whatever bond they might have placed between him and the stone would have trapped his soul in the stone for eternity instead of allowing him to move on to the spiritual realm. I think a similar effect manifests across Roshar, which is why it is profane to walk on stone. It's also why the Listeners want their dead to be left to the stones. I don't have enough information to conjecture why it might be beneficial to them or why they might have been led to think so, but the high concentration of invested souls in the souls of the stones outside of Shinovar and Urithiru can explain why it is cursed. It also explains Alethi death rites. Soulcasting for the lighteyes. Literally using magic to remove the body and transform it, casting the soul into something else. Burning for the darkeyes, which is just as fitting. When you pray to the almighty, you burn a prayer. In order to prevent your soul from being invested in the stones, you need to soulcast it or burn it. I also think that Tien has a sense for these sorts of things, and that not all invested stone is necessarily negative. Kaladin repeatedly is cheered up by the stones that Tien gives him. There's been a buzz around about the strata being mentioned, and Tien is one of those to mention strata. Ok, so besides the immediate effects of Kaladin feeling better, I want to point out Hesina saying it's magic and a spren Nalan and Szeth mentioning the spren of the stones, and then also Tien mentioning the Light making the rock change. Edit: I found another piece of text, specifically pertaining to parshendi death Rites, to support the theory.

Just occurred to me that Dalinar could, in response to Sadeas' murder, take the fall of Adolin legally if (or when) the consequences eventually come to fruition. Thoughts on this?

After such an impressive Title, I feel that you deserve an explanation. Now we know who the focuses of many of our books will be: (in no particular order) Kaladin, Shallan, Dalinar, Szeth, Eshonai, Jasnah, Lift, Shalash, Renarin, Taln. So let's have some fun speculating about the possible titles of the future books! Remember that the Way of Kings doesn't really have to do with Windrunning or Kaladin (Jezrien is the kingly Herald? Getting to know the courtly intrigues?), Words of Radiance is more related to Radiant-ing in general, but could be focused to Shallan and Lightweaving specifically, and Oathbringer is Dalinar's sword. All in all, the titles probably have to do more with the plot arch than the flashback characters, but hey why not have some fun?! You'll notice that I'm completely ignoring the whole 'titles of in-world books' thing, because a. we don't know the titles of many important or historical Rosharan books, and b. they still need to be thematically appropriate in some way. Kaladin - The Way of Kings Shallan - Words of Radiance Dalinar - Oathbringer Szeth - Stones Unhallowed is still my favorite, but maybe The Doctrines of Faith or The Broken Soul. (for the worst part of the coming desolation, trials, and struggles) Eshonai - Discovery's Call or Resurgence. (for humanity and parshendi coming back into the light) Jasnah - A Tomb of Knowledge or Elsecaller. (for picking up the pieces of society after a desolation, and I feel like out of the order names Elsecaller and Skybreaker have the most pizzazz lol) Lift - Voidbringer (because Wyndle) Shalash - Effigy of Remembrance Renarin - Afterimage Taln - Return to Braize (kidding). But how about Death's Journey? ok, give me more titles to drool over! Go! Just editing in my favs from you guys I really like Darkness Unclaimed because it works on so many levels from revealing light, to releasing the odiumspren somehow, to Nalan's journey (he's Darkness), and it suits Eshonai. I like most of Gatorgirl's. Those do sound like they could be Archive titles, and the character matching is nice. Not sure about the Arguments though

At the end of Words of Radiance, we learn that the oathgate in alethkar is Furthermore, I believe that we have already seen the central "control room" of this fabrial in the book, more specifically the Circle of Memories that can be seen in the final interludes as part of the first perspective, Lhan, this room is described as: To me, this seems incredibly similar to what is found at Stormseat I believe that these two buildings are both oathgates, they both have atleast ten lamps on the wall, with the previous extract showing that this refers to stormlight based lamps. Furthermore both chambers are split into eleven, in kholinar the eleventh is believed to be the tranquille halls, in stormseat utithuru. However, the eleventh lamp in kholinar is a bit of an anomaly, I believe this could be simple ornamentation from the Alethi, or perhaps it has been added to oathgate as a means to lock it, as we know that all oathgates besides stormseat have been locked. Anyway, there is my theory, please tell me what you think

Random question, how do Parshmen breed? I know regular Parshendi change into mate form in order to breed, but I think someone would notice if a Parshman snuck away and returned looking completely different. Another question, are all Parshmen just Parshendi in dull form? I know in the book it was said the dull form is used to spy on the humans so I assumed that all Parshmen were just Parshendi in dull form. I guess that they could just be a separate tribe of Parshendi that was found and enslaved, it was said that once the only forms known were dull form and mate form. What do you guys think?

Does it explicitly say that Dalinar's lack of being able to remember his former wife or hear her name is a CURSE from the nightwatcher? I ask, because I was discussing it with a friend and I always assumed that it was his BOON. My theory is that he asked the Nightwatcher to take away the pain from the death of his wife, and the form of the BOON was to forget her completely, and that we don't know yet what the curse is. But I wanted to verify if it says it's a curse explicitly. Thanks.

Cleaned up version: We know one order of KRs did not betray their oaths, concealing that with great subterfuge. We see two orders (Windrunners and Stonewards) in Dalinar's vision of the Recreance When trying to answer the question of which order is was, point 2 is used rule those two orders out. But is that valid? Or could the "great subterfuge" be that e.g. the Stonewards either faked their participation or they had most of their members participate to conceal that a small number did not? This has come up in a few threads now, but more as a comment/idea. I decided to start this thread to discuss how viable one or both are. Note that these could apply to the other orders as well, but the obvious interest is the Stonewards. Pros to faking participation in the Recreance: Still have the entire team together. Cons to faking participation in the Recreance: Requires some impressive illusions, which suggests the Lightweavers are most likely able to pull this off. But we have no reason to suspect them, and a lot of recent theories favor linking the Stormwards with the Shin. That's a big secret to keep, especially over time. And a lot of people to keep that secret. Shouldn't something have worked its way into the history books? Or should Honor have taken notice? It seems like they would need to go to ground or come up with a mass cover. How the heck do you keep the spren from blabbing? If every order participated with at least one other order: Would the "faking-their-death" spren really want to be anywhere near a bunch of their spren actually dying? And even if they thought they could tough it out, could they really? Pros to actually participating in the Recreance: In theory much easier to keep a secret. The Stonewards+Shin tie-in makes a lot of sense thematically, and this makes that possible. Moreso if only 8 remained as part of the order. It could explain certain views the Shin have (with such a high price to pay, they may abhor violence -- or that was part of the cover, that may have over time become a new adopted philosophy. ) and why they have the honorblades. Cons to actually participating in the Recreance: Wow, that's a major sacrifice if you don't actually agree with it. ??? Some random thoughts/questions: How likely would any non-bonded spren notice the subterfuge? Would Honor notice? And if so, why not mention the order in the visions? Because he could not predict what state they would be in? Still, why not even throw in a quick line about trying to contact the this order? Was he in on the subterfuge? The Stormfather hasn't had a chance to mention it yet? When was Vorin religoen and the Ardents formed? In the "faking participation" scenario, that could be one way to cover up what happened, but I thought both predated the Recreance? Though that may not stop a mass influx of ardents (and they may be able to wipe that from the history books). Is there any other group or city that they could have gone to or formed? How long have the Shin been around (or their leaders)? I am particularly interested in ways that the subterfuge may have been noticed. For example, would it be easier from Shadesmar? If Honor, Cultivation, or Odium noticed, would they leave us any hints (and what may those be)?

So there has been a lot of discussion about future Stormlight books, and the possibility that characters will die before we get their flashback story. I think this might have been the case for Dalinar, before his flashbacks were moved to book 3. This idea also prompted thoughts about how even if a character dies, they might still have a story, fighting with the Heralds to get back the Tranquiline Halls, aka fixing the Rosharian afterlife (this is only speculation and theories). I just came to the interesting conclusions: Gavilar is dead, thus in this <broken> afterlife We could get a flashback story for him, probably in the latter half of the series Also in the latter half, he could be the viewpoint character for the afterlife If Dalinar dies, there could be a very sweet reunion scene (whether canon or fanfiction)

Hello people! I don't know if this has already been discussed, so apologies if the post is repetitive. Anyway, this is the epigraph of chapter way of kings. "The life is my death, the strength becomes my weakness, the journey has ended" Now, I read somewhere that Brandon gave clues to the ends of stormlight in epigraphs of way of kings, and this one seems pretty important to me. This feels like something Kaladin would say. He is the only one that gave a serious thought to the first oath, we are not shown dalinar and shallan thinking a lot about it. This could be something Kaladin would say, or happen to Kaladin at the very end of arc 1 of stormlight. The life is my death : We know kaladin easily goes to depression, and when he is depressed, when he is the wretch, this is how he would feel. I imagine some one important, very close to Kaladin is going to die - I don't know. Rock, teft, shallan... There are many choices. The strength becomes my weakness: Now, this I can't say. I imagine that by the end of arc 1 some champion has to face odium. ( I think odium is going to be freed by the end of this arc) May be odium has counters to stormlight based magics? I don't know much about this. The journey has ended: I think this is pretty straight forward. Kaladin is going to die. Or I think he is going to sacrifice himself in the grief of his loved one's death. I know this is just a theory, and there is nothing whats so ever proofs to this theory, but I think this quote suits to Kaladin. And that Kaladin is going to die. What do you guys think?
