  1. I'm not sure what spoiler policy is for Mistborn, so I'm just gonna say that this has MAJOR Mistborn spoilers. Each Shard on Scadrial has 2 things associated to itself: a Metallic Art and a Godmetal (I'm gonna capitalize this because why not). Hemalurgy for Ruin, Allomancy for Preservation. It's fairly easy to demonstrate why Feruchemy is associated with Harmony (if you want me to explain, post Explain in the comments please because I don't have much time now) For me, Godmetals have the most powerful effect in the Metallic Art of the Shard is associated with: Lerasium makes you into the most powerful Allomancer you can be, a Mistborn. For this reason, I think the info we have about H-Atium is downplayed (I have a theory, but again, I don't have much time so post Theory down below). So, by the same logic, Harmonium/Ettmetal should do something really cool in Feruchemy. My theory is that we saw it in BoM. That's right, the primer cube. My theory is that a Feruchemist filling a Harmoniummind would somehow dampen nearby Allomantic charges of a certain metal. Like tin, you would have to use a different metalmind per Allomantic metal. Then, tapping the metalmind would replicate Allomancy, centered on the Feruchemist. Tapping it faster coyld even replicate duralumin. I think that harmonium alloys would enable you to store only Allomantic pulses of that metal. This would mean that the Southern Scadrians have discovered how to mechamize Feruchemy, which is an idea I like very much because of all the possible uses, of which I'll be happy to tell you about at length, but not now. Thoughts?
  2. Recently I received a comment on my Oathbringer Lore video that started me down this particular rabbit hole. “I don’t get why Odium doesn’t take the power of the shards he kills.” (VREODe) Initially, this seemed easy to answer. Odium already has a purpose and intent that goes so well in line with the Vessel’s own intent and incorporating other shards would only muddle that intent further. But as I thought about the implications I realized that there is something that I was overlooking about the nature of Odium and the potential union that we might have overlooked. The power and intent of Ambition. [Credit to Botanica Xu who created Grandpa Odium, please follow the link and follow her on Tumbler] First let’s review why Odium would willingly pass up the power of a shattered shard. Harmony is the perfect example of the danger combining shards poses. While Harmony likely wields the greatest collective power in the Cosmere at the moment, he is also the most severely limited. In his letter to Hoid he expresses the growing struggles he has in acting upon the greater Cosmere due to the need to maintain the balance between two opposing shards. This seems to restrict him far more than the single shards ever were. His immense power might destroy him if he is not careful. It's easy to see that such a conflicting nature would be incredibly unappealing to a shard like Odium. He obviously has plans and intent to destroy or at least subdue the other powers of the Cosmere for his own ends. Perhaps he is just paranoid that he will fall like Adonalsium and seeks to eliminate any potential threats who have the investiture or knowledge to destroy him. In fact, the nature of events on Scadrial, where mortals ascend and destroy an established shard, likely haunt his dreams. This would explain Odium’s apparent terror when Dalinar created a perpendicularity. At that moment Dalinar became a sliver of something Odium thought destroyed and he fled. It seems clear to me that Odium fears to lose his power, and that fear motivates his actions. But what does this have to do with the death of Ambition? Brandon has said that the moment the shards scattered across the stars, Odium was targeting Ambition. Likely he foresaw Ambition as the most likely to challenge his rule and thus needed to be eliminated. Ambition wasn’t the first shard to fall, but eventually, Odium took her out. There are scraps of power left behind from that encounter, so we know the fight was figuratively bloody. After the downfall and splintering of Dominion and Devotion Odium left quite a mess of their investiture and the effects of his decision to lock the investiture in the Cognitive Realm has resulted in some unintended consequences. Perhaps he has refined his ability to kill shards since then, and he had another opportunity with Ambition. It is likely then to assume that the shattering of Ambition was far cleaner, and perhaps it will be difficult to determine what exactly happened until the events of that fight are canonized. But as I answered this question some small thoughts that had been floating around in my mind came back to me. Core questions that I couldn’t shake off. How was Odium able to fight and kill two shards that were united? Would the power of Ambition resonate with a man like Rayse who already had so much natural ambition? Has it ever been stated officially that Odium is just one shard? Devotion and Dominion were likely pitted against each other allowing Odium to bring them down due to their opposing natures. But Honor and Cultivation are not so opposed. The nature of their relationship was likely complicated but it didn’t seem as openly hostel as other pairings thus far. It seems odd that another equal albeit aggressive shard could sweep in and kill Honor. In fact, it seems to me that Honor and Cultivation sought to trap Odium to prevent his future rampaging. So, what happened? How did one defeat two? I think Odium secretly holds more than his share of power. What reason does he have to abandon the power of a defeated shard that matches his own intent so well? In physics, there are some curious effects that we can observe in the nature of sound waves. If you have two sound waves that have the same amplitude but inverted phase (antiphase), they will cancel each other out leaving a strange silence behind. This is observably similar to the nature of Ruin and Preservation, two similar yet opposing forces that cancel each other out. However, if you have two wavelengths of equal strength that are in phase they amplify into one more powerful wave. This is likely a parallel that can be drawn between two different shards. If opposed they cancel each other out. If in phase they can amplify. Based on the observed Cosmere, I doubt that Odium completely took all of Ambition’s power, it seems there were large splinters left behind at least on one world. But I sincerely doubt Odium would leave behind the power that would only bolster his intent and nature. It would explain why he has become such a danger to the Cosmere that Hoid seeks to gather the other shards against him. Remember Odium destroyed Honor and seeks to destroy Cultivation so he can break free of the Rosharian system. The other shards might only be safe currently because Odium has been trapped on Roshar for so long. Naturally, there is little support for this theory, and I’m likely wrong about this. Perhaps Odium would be too paranoid of corrupting his own power base to incorporate even a portion of another shard. Yet there are some observations that I can make that imply that I might be right about this. For instance, it is interesting that on Threnody the fragment of ambition seems to create cognitive shadows of the deceased that can act of their own accord, something that seems prevalent in the forces of Odium and the fused. Is it hard to believe that the power to infuse the remains of the dead into service is a power that Odium acquired rather than developed? To me, it seems far too likely to be a coincidence and the temptation of Ambition’s power far too great to be ignored.
  3. I wanted to find a slightly different way of looking at the Shards and how they are divided up. I tried to sort the 10 shards we know of https://coppermind.net/wiki/Shard & the shard Brandon hinted at http://www.17thshard.com/forum/?section=findpost&pid=46099 into categories based on the focus of their intent. By focus I mean Odium is a feeling towards others while Autonomy is not a feeling, but a way of interacting with others, being free of the control of others. I then thought about those categories and what was missing from them or what else could be in them to try and figure out what the remaining shards could be. I highlighted in yellow the ideas I think are missing from each category. I kind of left Endowment hanging out there close to Working with Others Category, but it may not fit in there. These are just a framework for brainstorming feel free to disagree or suggest your own. Focus of Intent Shard Name Definition, Synonyms & Related Ideas Working with Others Dominion Control, Mastery, Command, Authority Autonomy Self-directing, Freedom, Self-government Honor To fulfill an agreement, Keen sense of ethical conduct, Integrity, Respect Collaboration / Cooperation / Interact as equals Deception / Guile / Tickery (Hide + Survive shard might cover these ideas) Endowment Give, bequeath or provide an asset, quality or ability. Invest, Equip, Bless, Gift Lifecycle of Existence Preservation Maintain, Keep as is, prevent change or decay, Middle of Lifecycle Cultivation Grow, Develop, Improve, Encourage, Middle of Lifecycle Ruin Entropy, Decay, Rot, Destroy, Death, Ending of Lifecycle Beginning of Lifecycle/Creation/Ingenuity/Novelty/Creativity Feelings Towards Others Devotion Love, Loyalty, Dedication to a person or cause, Religious Worship Odium Hatred, or disgust directed toward someone as a result of their actions, revulsion Guilt Feeling of blame or responsibility for the consequence of one's actions. Sorrow Envy Jealous of what others have, quasi-opposite of endowment. Covet. Hunger. Desire. Attributes of the Self Ambition Desire to achieve, aspiration, hope, purpose, drive Hide + Survive Shard (Wisdom, Practicality, Deception, Fear) Curiosity Desire for knowledge, intelligence, discovery, exploration

    Unity

So in Oathbringer, Dalinar says "I am Unity" and Odium responds with "We killed you" Naturally this leads people to believe that Unity might have been a shard or something. I have a different theory. In other post on the topic of Unity, I have expressed my belief that if Unity will ever exist it will be as a multi shard like Harmony. Recently I came up with the idea: What if Unity ALREADY existed as a Multi Shard before Harmony. Is it possible that at some point, probably right after the Shattering, several shards came together to form a multi shard called Unity? If this was true, what Odium said implies that him, and probably the other shards (He says "we" not "I") teamed up to kill Unity, and return it to its original Shards of Adonalsium state. This would also be what allows Odium to know that to become the most powerful being in the universe he can't take up other Shards otherwise he will take up there intent. Maybe the shard Odium was in fact part of Unity, and Rayse was not in fact one of the original sixteen people to shatter Adonalsium, but somebody who came latter. Please let me know you thoughts on this.
  5. At the beginning of WoK the Alethi first encountered the Listeners, who they dubbed the parshendi . At this time the parshendi had no shardbearers. Jasnah confirmed this by her conversation with Dalinar in WoK . In WoR we find out after 6 years of battle Eshonai is the last Parshendi shard bearer.. so sometime after Gavilar death and the beginning of the Vengence Pact the Singers found a cache of shardblade . If you remember the Singers learned Alethi rapidly and the first question they asked was to see the Alethi maps. So did Ulim Who was around back then “ he was the voice that told Klade to buy Szeth. Tell the singers about a city where they could find shards? The most obvious answer is Urithiru . The Singers beat them ( alethi their long ago ) and took all the shards . Szeth could of took them thru the Oathgate. Maybe that is what he meant when he said he had seen this before when shallan activated the Oathgare. I assumed it was someone in Shinovar that went there but it could of been the singers guided by Ulim . What do you guys think ? Where did they get all those sets of shards??
  6. Is it just me, or do the shards seem somewhat averse to interacting with people or general public awareness? Endowment is only seen interacting with the returned when they first die. The general population of Nalthis appears entirely unaware of her existence. And we know from the letters that she was watching well enough to spot Hoid, so its not like she's ignoring the planet. Autonomy is noted by Brandon to prefer to work through her avatars instead of directly. Ruin admitted to seeing all humans as tools(maybe all shards share this view?) and only interacted with spiked individuals, or the few instances of nudging Vin and Sazed. Preservation at least made direct contact with the terris people, as he did give them the prophecies which contained knowledge of Ruin and Preservation. And several peoples of Scadrial knew of different versions of their twin gods. But in general specific knowledge of Preservation and Ruin was not widespread, although maybe Ruin purposely inhibited it? Preservation is shown to love humanity and desire Kelsier's respect, but doesn't seem too upset that the world isn't worshiping him. Roshar: Honor and Cultivation were at least know by the early people of Roshar. The heralds had some way of contacting Honor to ask for the privilege of becoming heralds. And the Radiants knew of both and were able to contact Honor and the SF described Honor as loving humanity. But post Honor's death, Cultivation seems to have largely shunned humanity. She does seem to be doing background stuff, but no known direct interactions. She's had 4.5 millennia to firmly entrench in people's minds that Culti/Honor good, Odium bad, and she could have cultivated humanity to be better prepared for the desolation. In her scene with Dalinar she seemed almost annoyed of having to interact with someone as lowly as a human, although this was another show of a shard requiring the respect of a person but not upset with the world not worshiping/respecting her. Maybe she's just upset with humanity because Honor died. Of course, she also might be avoiding presenting a target to Odium. Odium I'll leave as an unknown, as we can't know what he did on Sel and Threnody, and on Roshar he appears to fear a strike from Cultivation. Harmony is the only shard that seems to take a semi active approach to his planet's population(the basin part anyways), at least when his twin shards allow him to. The north part of Scadrial at least knows of him in detail from the writings he left, and he occasionally sends messages via earrings. The kandra can actively speak to him, and regularly carry out his will on the planet. But even in his case, the southern hemisphere doesn't seem to interact with him directly, all of their knowledge coming from their Survivor. What are your thoughts? Do the shards want to be unknown? Do they just prefer to watch instead of taking action? Do they just consider humanity not worth the effort? Do most of them just not care one way or another about humanity? Some other reason?
  7. So I’ve been thinking a lot about the whole overall Cosmere plot. And I was thinking that instead of Dalinar uniting all of Roshar, that in actuality he is supposed to unite all 16 shards. I feel like Dalinar would be perfect for this, as he has been both extreme evil and good. He’s been the prime example for both. I feel like this would make him a great character to be a god. Wit even mentions this, saying the original gods name, and then saying what would it be like to rip a man apart, and then put him back together. Any thoughts? Do you guys think it’s likely?
  8. I was inspired by another topic, so what would happen if an animal (such as a beaver) took up a shard? Would it become intelligent and human-like? Or would it stay chaotic, such as a giant cat playing with the world like it was yarn. Maybe it would be dependant on the shard? Like Harmony would give enlightenment, Odium would cause the animal to stay instinctual? Just wondering about people's theories.
  9. So in Secret History, Keslier is unable to assume the powers of Preservation, even for a short time, because he is insufficiently Connected to Preservation. However, he is a full Mistborn with no hemalurgic spikes, and allomancy is of Preservation. Does this mean that an important way to forge Connection with a shard is by embodying its intent? That's the only thing I can think of that matches these facts. And if this is the case, can you forge Connection with a shard not present on your planet in this way?
  10. So I was just reading Mistborn:SH and we know that Kelsier is in the cognitive realm and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. We also know that Hoid dislikes Kelsier because he's similar to Rayse. And we also know that Kelsier wanted to learn more about the Cosmere at the end of SH. I know this might be a little early for theorizing, but does anyone think it likely, or even possible, that in the future Kelsier could become a shard? Kelsier has already had plans about killing a "god" in the first Mistborn, so that sounds like something he would plan. Since he's similar to Rayse, I feel like it makes sense, that at some point, he might take up Odium's mantel. I know this is kind of a long shot theory, but it just made sense to me. Thoughts?
  11. Pre - Shattering there was a being or power source Adonalsium that controlled or encompassed all of the investiture in the Cosmere. Presumably this investiture was imbued throughout the existing stars, planets and beings that existed in the Cosmere which included almost all of the current systems and types of intelligent life forms that currently exist (Scadrial and its line of humans being notable exceptions.) Also presumably all of the original ways of using investiture (proto-lightweaving, proto-sensory enhancement, proto-future sight, etc.) were either inherently granted by or naturally derived from Adolnasium. At some point in the past, either 1) Adonalsium either was under some threat that would affect the way of life in the cosmere or at least on Yolen. 2) Adonalsium itself was becoming a threat or a perceived threat to the way of life in the cosmere/Yolen. 3) The leaders of the various groups on Yolen convinced others/themselves of point 1 or 2 above. I believe that at this point, the leaders split into several factions. Faction 1 - disagreed entirely with any plan to interfere with or 'kill' Adonalsium - I feel fairly confident adding Frost to this group. Faction 2 - Agreed with plan to separate and distribute Adonalsium power but thought that this would be sufficient to end the threat or could be used safely - Leras, Tanavast, Uli Da, Aona Faction 3 - Agreed with plan to separate and distribute Adonalsium power but thought that the power should be kept separate or should be further splintered - Rayse, Bavadin, Edgli Not sure about: Ati, Skai, Cultivation's vessel Huge Question mark - probably doesn't fit into any of these categories - Hoid. A lot of this comes from information and impressions of the various Letters as well as some semi-canon sources (The Traveler, DragonSteel sample chapters, Liar of Partinel sample) and my own impressions and thoughts while reading the books, exploring the Shard and listening to Shardcast podcasts. Let me know your thoughts.
  12. A friend and I were discussing the importance of numbers in the Cosmere, and how they relate to each Shard. For example, in the Stormlight Archive, the Shard called Honor always has things in tens, and Odium always has things in nines. Is there a pattern like this in the rest of the Cosmere? My personal theory (it has no evidence to back it up, but it seems plausible) is that the numbers have to do with the order in which they gained their powers as Vessels. Maybe Odium was the ninth, followed by Honor. In Mistborn, there are sixteen Metallurgic metals. Perhaps Leras, the Vessel for Preservation, was the sixteenth person to gain the powers? This isn’t as solid, though, as Hemalurgy is of Ruin... Thoughts?
  13. So, I was talking with a friend, and she was saying that she thinks Adonalsium has to have a Cognitive Shadow somewhere in the Cosmere. She was convinced by a WOB were Brandon RAFO'd the question of "Does Adonalsium have a Cognitive Shadow in the Cosmere." My first response was doubt. To me it just didn't seem like something that would happen. She asked me why, and I mentioned that Cognitive Shadows were imprints of people's investiture that were left behind, really as an excuse out of an explanation. Looking through the WOB's on this topic, that is just the common in-world theory, and that cognitive shadows are super complicated. Either way, when I told my friend that she said that something with as much investiture as Adonalsium must have left behind a Cognitive Shadow, saying "Where did all that investiture go then?" to which I responded "What do you think the Shards are?" and then I realized... The Shards. What if the Shards are in fact Cognitive Shadows left behind by Adonalsium, or at least the Intents are. According to the Coppermind, a Nahel bond between a Cognitive Shadow and a person is possible, and what if the Vessels are bonding in some strange, or maybe simple, who knows, way with the Cognitive Shadows of Adonalsium. Please let me know your thoughts.
  14. Any theories on the best (and fastest) way to kill Odium? Personally, I think Harmony should stab him with Nightblood. Think about it.
  15. I know that there has been a lot of speculation as to what the name of Cultivation's Vessel is. The fact that we do not know the name of her Vessel yet is to me extremely suspicious, because of the Shards that we know, practically all of their names have been revealed. This is a comprehensive list as far as I know... Preservation - Leras Ruin - Ati Devotion - Aona Dominion- Skai Endowment - Edgli Ambition - Uli Da Autonomy - perhaps Trell (or perhaps Trell is one of Autonomy's avatars...) - actually I just looked this up to be sure and her name is Bavadin apparently (not sure where we learned that...) Honor - Tanavast Odium - Rayse Cultivation - ???? So why don't we know the name of Cultivation's Vessel? Because the thing is, knowing the names of all of the other Vessels doesn't really tell us anything that interesting about them - it's not that big a secret what the name of Odium, is for example. Learning that Honor is Tanavast or Ambition is Uli Da is just interesting information, it doesn't really pull together any cosmere threads or give us the answers to any big RAFOs. This has led me to believe that Cultivation's shard name is important somehow. Why else wouldn't we know it? Is Brandon just withholding this information to be mysterious, or is there some deeper reason? We know the name of Ambition's Vessel from Threnody, and all we have seen from the planet of Threnody is one short story that probably isn't very significant to the larger cosmere, whereas we have three gigantic volumes from the Stormlight Archive, with Cultivation being mentioned in all three and even appearing in Oathbringer, and we still don't know her name. At this point, I might be a little bit annoyed if her name had zero cosmere significance, just because it's been teased for so long. My immediate thought is that her name is either Senna or Reya, because those are the only ambiguous female names floating around that could have some cosmere significance. However, Brandon has confirmed that Reya is not Cultivation's name, as shown by THIS COMMENT on a thread from 2014 (which shows how long we've been discussing this dilemma). There is also the possibility that her name is Senna, which is a name that Preservation just mindlessly mutters to himself in Secret History. Senna is discussed in THIS thread from 2016, but the impression I get is that Senna is important to Leras as a person, but not necessarily a god herself, and therefore not likely Cultivation. So the question remains, who is Cultivation's Vessel? I don't think it's very productive to just grasp at random names from the cosmere and wonder, "Is THIS Cultivation?" because it seems to me like Brandon is intentionally keeping her a secret, and I don't think we're going to find anything. However, the bigger question then becomes, WHY is Cultivation's name a secret? My theory is that her name is important somehow - that it will reveal something about the cosmere - but I have no idea what that could be. Any ideas?
  16. Has any one noticed the art in the Arcanum Unbound in the inside cover. The star map? I think that is a hint that there is a bigger bad guy out there than odium. It has a massive knight pointing a blade at a dragon. Also, most of the stars in the dragon are red, which is a sign of interference in the investure of those stars. I think that the shards split up because this bigger force is trying to take them over. That is why they made a pact to each go to a different world and not share worlds. That would also explain why Odium is so set on killing shards that do that sort of thing, he does not want the bigger fish to get them. Perhaps that is why Rayse took up Odium in the first place, so that he could basically police the other shards. It would be a very Brandon twist to have Odium actually be a sort of good guy who is just trying to prevent the end of the universe.
  17. So a friend of mine finally got around to reading Oathbringer for the first time and he made this observation: he believes the First Ideal of the knights radiants reflect all three shards. Life Before Death: Cultivation Strength Before Weakness: Odium Journey Before Destination: Honor I don't know if this has been noticed before, we barely read these forums but thought this might be something cool enough to share.
  18. (Mistborn Era 1 Spoilers) So we know that in HoA, when Vin went against Ati, they both died, due to their technically equal power. What I’m asking, is if two shards ganged up on one shard in a fight, would the one die and the others just be temporarily weakened? Because, if so, Harmony could go around taking out shards whenever he wants. Basically, 2v1 shard fight, who would win and who would die?
  19. I posted this on General Brandon discussion, but then I realized it probably belongs here. So I recently restarted Elantris, and-I'm sure I'm not the first to see this- I noticed that "Domi" (as in merciful domi) sounded an awful lot like Dominion (DOMInion). I also noticed Hrathen say something along the lines of "ambition is one of the only emotions Jaddeth encourages, besides devotion. I think it may be possible that Shu-Dereth and Shu-Korath are worshiping devotion and dominion, respectively? It does say in the coppermind that Domi comes from Aon Omi, meaning love, but I thought the coincidence was a little too strong. Also, the Derethi beliefs that Jaddeth lives in the ground hits a little too close to home for it to not be one of the shards. What do you guys think?
  20. About half a year ago, I posted up a thread in Cosmere Theories called Narrowing Down the Last Shards (below) in which we as a forum posited many excellent ideas. It's long but worth the read as much of what I say in this post I derived from there. I have since changed my opinion with some ideas I'm sure you all will appreciate and tear up as you please. Having said that, in this thread I will go a step further. Not only will we try to discern the remaining six Shards, but we will ask what we can do with that information, and theorize what kind of magic, worlds, and people those Shards may have created. Thus, I present to you The Rest of the Shards and Where to Find Them. So as before, here are some things we think we know, and some suppositions, before I get to the List: Shards are all godly attributes, possibly based on the Judeo/Christian god, Adonai (for which Adonalsium was named). Shards do not have perfect pairs or opposites Shards may also be considered to have many opposites There is a Shard (besides Ambition) that has not Invested in a planet. Aforementioned Shard wants to hide and survive because it is a wise decision. Survival is not the capitalized intent, and is only tangentially related to the capitalized Intent. Shards' Intents, by the definition of the word, are active. They have a goal. Odium is the most dangerous of the Shards. Ambition was #1 on Odium's hit list, which means that there are no other Shards which he would find more dangerous than Ambition. Hoid and Frost know what they're talking about. I know I missed a few things that I wanted to say. Feel free (as before) to correct me, or add to the things we know. Most of that is from WoB, and some supposition, and was derived from previous responses. Part 1: The Rest of the Shards: Disclaimer #1: Not all of the ideas for Shard names were mine, and I am not claiming that they are original. I appreciate all the thought you wonderful people have put into this, and thank you for broadening my mind on this subject. I will ping some of the contributors of the original thread in the references in Part 3. Disclaimer #2: As I mentioned above, Adonalsium is likely based off of the Judeo/Christian God. I am a believer, and some of the Intents are based on my views of God. They may not match your own, and that's okay. Please do not take my posited Intents or arguments thereof as me trying to convert you. The Intents are speculation based on my beliefs, Brandon's beliefs, and are just as valid in this discussion as your own. I hope that we can discuss this subjectively. Disclaimer #3: This will be a lengthy post, and I don't think I will hide anything in spoilers to shorten it. If it looks too long too read, fret not. I won't be insulted if you just want to skim through the list at first, and simply read the parts that interest you. If you do wish to respond to something, however, please take the time to read my opinion on it, otherwise, I may just quote stuff I already said back at you. I don't mean to be insulting if I do so, so don't take it as snark. Disclaimer #4: I recognize the possibility that Brandon may not have finalized all of the Shards Intents as of yet, which would render all of this rather useless. But of course, this is the Shard where we can discuss any theories no matter how baseless they are! Brandon, if you're reading this and I'm right about everything, I promise I didn't break into your personal wiki, and if I correctly guess future magic systems or worlds, I promise not to say that they're my ideas. I'll just be glad that I called it. As before, Shards we know are in Green, and Shards we don't know are in Red. This does not mean that they are in the correct groupings, however. This is all speculation. The four quadrants that I believe make up the being Adonalsium are as follows: Creation, Personality/Authority, Action, and Divinity. I believe we can put all sixteen Shards into groups of four, as opposed to pairs as I originally thought. Group 1: Creation Many have spoken (in-universe and out) that Preservation and Ruin are the forces of creation. This is not wrong, but I don't think that's the be-all and end-all of the Creation force that is Adonalsium. Some of these Intents refer not only to the physical creation of nature, but actions and mindsets about people. (Cultivation or Sanctification of followers for example) Cultivation: Growth, Creation, Sanctification Cultivation embodies positive change with the intent of creating something better. It can destroy things if necessary in order to make something better out of it, or in its place. Preservation: Guarding, Stasis, Immutability Preservation cannot create anything new on its own; it can only act to preserve what is already in place. Preservation also points to the god attribute of immutability, the unchanging nature of God. Ruin: Destruction, Decay, Entropy Ruin's end goal is to break everything down to its most basic parts. Historically, Ruin was able to help create things, only if it let him destroy more things afterward. Brandon has remarked that this would make Ruin compatible with Cultivation, which supports this theory. Chaos: Neutrality, Quiescence, Abeyance, "Letting the chips fall where they may" As I mentioned in the "Things we think we know" section, Shards need to have an active goal in order to fulfill the logical requirements of the word "Intent". For this reason, I am not totally sold on any of the above-selected words, but more the overarching goal of them collectively. The obvious hole in the quadrant is the art of negative neutrality, in the same way as Preservation is a positive neutrality. However, as Intent denotes activity, it cannot truly be neutral. Thus, I settled on the word "Chaos". Group 2: Personality/Authority Adonalsium was seen as God in the cosmere (source: Hoid & Frost). We need the personality of God (based on the Judeo/Christian God as above) as well as his right to rule if we want to fulfill all of the necessary components that make up who they are. Dominion: Controlling, Ruling, Conquering This is the type of power Adonalsium would have by divine right, similar to a king or a god. Charisma: Leadership, Magnetism This is the type of power that would make Adonalsium worthy of being served. What good is the authority of a god if they are not worthy? It is a hole that needs filling, and it contrasts the other names in this quadrant. I know many people aren't sold on the name; neither am I. But it is the best word I've found to communicate the broadness of the overarching Intent of the hole in this quadrant. Devotion: Servitude, Care, Love, Mercy I feel the need to point out that Devotion is a fairly broad definition, which includes many other Intents many people have posited for names of Shards (including Love). Brandon himself called it Love before he changed it to Devotion. This is the reason why I do not have "Love" in any of the quadrants, as it is included in Devotion. I used to have this Shard paired with Odium as I had asked Brandon if they were opposites. His reply was that they "could be considered as such", however, Odium does not fit with this quadrant, so I abandoned that line of thought. I may have just left too much wiggle room in what we consider as opposites, as people have pointed out before. Autonomy: Independence, Freedom This Shard point's to the godly attribute of independence, god's self-sufficiency in that they do not require anything. Autonomy is a weird Shard with a highly...debatable Intent, which has led to some confusion in the past on how we can define a Shard's Intent. The consensus is that the Vessel is able to act on their interpretation of the Intent, and that the Intent may change slightly as a result, depending on the Vessel. This may be what Brandon meant when he said that Adonalsium could have been split in different ways. Group 3: Action Going again back to the nature of Shardic Intent, Adonalsium is a god of action. He was a creation-force that had a goal in mind, and this should be true for the Shards as well. The four below Intents cover most, if not all, of the main actions the Judeo/Christian god. Endowment: Giving, Mercy With love and care, god would be one who gives to his followers in order that they use their gifts for his glory (see: Spiritual gifts). Separated from the context of other Shards and their respective Intents, Endowment becomes what we see in Warbreaker. In conjunction with the other Shards in this grouping and the others, I believe that Endowment includes mercy and forgiveness, though there is an argument that they may be a Shard on their own. Retribution: Punishment, Justice, Vengeance A favourite of many on this thread, and one I used to oppose, I have come to see that this Shard would contrast Endowment (including mercy), and Honor, rather than being part of Honor (though that argument is still intact), Retribution is an action the Judeo/Christian god does quite a lot of, separated by his promises (Honor). Ambition: Taking, Improving, Acting If there is a Shard that is tenuously...off...in this grouping, Ambition would be the one (In which case I would replace it with Mercy). The only reason I say that is because Ambition (though involving action) is more of a mindset, like Odium (which would put it in the "Divinity" section below). However, it does make a good contrast with Endowment as well, and somewhat fills in the hole of a god demanding something from his followers. This works if we say Ambition involves sanctification of followers more than an improvement on God's behalf (which wouldn't be a godly attribute). Honor: Promising, Covenant We see both Honor and the Judeo/Christian god bind themselves to their promises, as well as expect it of their subjects. Group 4: Divinity The final grouping is the overarching theme of what makes god or Adonalsium divine (see: Hoid & Frost). It is, in fact, the most undisputed necessity of godhood. I will explain my choices below. Bear in mind that this is the one with the most unknowns, as there are still three Shards unaccounted for in my pattern. Therefore, this includes my suppositions on there needing to be a Shard of Wisdom/Enlightenment, and a Shard including Mystery, which are both heavily needed in a god figure like the Judeo/Christian god. Enlightenment: Wisdom, Knowledge, Omnipotence, Ingenuity Though all Shards have some measure of Omnipotence, we would be amiss to not include a Shard of Wisdom. It is my belief that this Shard is the Survival Shard that wants to hide, not Investing in a planet for fear of Odium, acknowledging that it is the wisest action for self-preservation. I included the possibility above of Ingenuity, as Brandon may have slipped and confirmed it accidentally, though that is a measure of semantics and debatable. Odium: "Divine Hatred", Wrath, Envy And we come to the villain of the Cosmere... I put Odium in this grouping because of Hoid's words: "He bears God's own divine hatred, separated from the virtues which gave it context". Notice his use of the word "divine". In this grouping, if he was still part of Adonalsium, Divine Hatred is undoubtedly a big part of God's divinity and holiness. Enigma: Mystery, Paradox As I mentioned above, Mystery is a big part of what separates God from mortals. I chose Enigma because it sounds cooler it's more encompassing than Mystery. It definitely plays a role in Divinity and makes a good pairing with Enlightenment. I say "Paradox" because I know people will bring it up based on the obscure "Alcatraz Shard WoB" and it somewhat fits. Purity: Holiness, Chastity Admittedly, this is the Shard I am less sure on. I include it because Holiness is perhaps the largest part of divinity, and it gives Odium the context Hoid talks about. Also, there is a mysterious planet called Purity in the Threnodite system that doesn't follow the pattern of funeral songs. As I mentioned in the write-up for Ambition, it's possible that it belongs in this slot in Divinity, leaving Mercy in its place in Action. However, doing so would leave Odium without those virtues to give it context in the subject of Divinity, and would leave both groupings somewhat unbalanced. Edit 1: Added Part 2 in spoiler below (hopefully):
  21. We see on multiple worlds that the intent of a Shard is directly related to how the magic system on that world functions: Awakening on Nalthis is the giving of Breath to something else; bonding a spren on Roshar requires honoring oaths; end-positive Allomancy and end-negative Hemalurgy on Scadrial; etc. So, how is Sand Mastery related to the intent of Autonomy?
  22. I've been reading a lot about Odiums ability to spinter other shards and it got me thinking, what if some pieces of Adonalsium are bigger than others. Like it might have had the same amount of Ruin and Preservation, that's why there so well matched. But it also might have more hate/ passion then say Ambition and that's why Odium can splinter them so easily. Because he has more power. Tell me what you guys think, or if there's some WOB that smashes this theory then also please tell.
  23. Preface: I just realized that I have made 99 posts on the Shard and I want to make #100 count. I've spent the last few minutes or so (which is a long time for me) trying to figure out what would be appropriate. On my first day as a member of the Shard, I was reading an interesting thread about The Iriali and the long trial and decided to insert my two cents. I had a good idea about the name of the Shard that the Iriali call "The One." No one ever responded to my post, and the thread died (my post is still the last one). I have wanted to create a new thread about it for a while now, but I never got around to it. So for post #100, I decided to dust off this old theory and try again! The Theory: The basic story of the One is this: There was a single great entity that knew everything but had experienced nothing It broke apart it many pieces, becoming the people known as the Iriali The Iriali were destined to live on 7 different worlds (great speculation on this in the thread I linked above) After the 7th world, they would reunite to reform The One (which we assume is a Shard) So the question is, which Shard is The One? In the thread linked above, there was some interesting speculation on this, but I feel like everyone is missing a glaring, obvious clue. How has Brandon named all of the Shards so far? It's based off of their capital "I" Intent driving motivation. What is the Shard's purpose? Why does it do what it does? This purpose drives all of the Shard's actions and it's reflected in the name of the Shard. So let's ignore all the (super interesting) speculation about which worlds the Iriali have gone to, and which they will go to next. These questions are just distractions. The relevant question is WHY. Why do they travel between worlds? Why did The One break itself apart? The answer: to experience. It knew everything but experienced nothing, so it broke apart and forced its people to travel from world to world in the Cosmere. The purpose is to gain experience. The Shard is called Experience Closing: Ok, that was a lot to type and took longer than I expected. Now that I'm done, I fully expect someone to pop in with a WoB totally disproving my whole theory. That, or for someone to say "duhhhhh, why do you think no one talks about this? It's like having a theory about water being wet." Anyway this is my 100th post and I'm sticking to it! Thanks to everyone at the Shard for enabling my Sanderson addiction! P.S. Wasn't sure if this should be on the OB board or in Cosmere Theories, so admins feel free to move
  24. So I have been looking at peoples thoughts on this in other topics, and most people seem to be in agreement that the third bondsmith spren is a combination of Honor and Cultivation. I know this is very unlikely, (but I have learned to expect he unexpected from Sanderson) but is it possible that the third bondsmith spren is not of Honor, Odium, or Cultivation, and is instead of a different shard that isn’t on Roshar, but has a splinter that just happens to be on Roshar for whatever reason (similar to Patji)?
  25. All Heralds are of the Almighty, which is Honor. If Edgedancers are of Cultivation, then how do they have a Herald as their patron? Is there some sort of cross-shard cooperation going on with the order of KR? Also, all other orders are of Honor, so what makes Edgedancers different?
