  1. - NO MATING! - Adolin's safehouse in Kholinar being... his tailor. - "Monstrous terrors from the mythological past, enemies of all that was right and good. Destroyers who had laid waste to civilization countless times. They were playing cards" - Every time Kaladin accepts a challenge just for his Stormlight to run off is funny to me for some reason. - Shallan's conversation with Hoid.
  2. Welcome to Shardcast, and Happy New Year! We are starting this year with a podcast that's way too long, but there's much to talk about. We're talking about Dalinar visiting the Valley and the Nightwatcher, and all that stuff. Obviously, there are Oathbringer spoilers here. We talk about the Old Magic, the age of the Old Magic, and of course, the Stormfather's love of the Oxford comma. (I'm only somewhat kidding.) I'm Eric, and I'm joined today with Ian (WeiryWriter), and Matt (Comatose)--who you can hear actually rifling through pages of his physical Oathbringer copy. What a weirdo. (Just kidding.) Apologies on this podcast coming a bit late this week. I was traveling and this took quite some time to edit! See you next week.
  3. From the album: General SA Art

It's been a long while since I last drew Elhokar... Now we know we need some art of him.
  4. So I have 6h 49m left on the Audiobook for Oathbringer and if this is proven wrong in the next few hours feel free to call me a moron and send me on my way but I've noticed that throughout the whole book any Fused which uses a surge has only ever been shown to use one not have 2 like the Knights Radiant. All the flying Fused have only ever been shown to use Gravitation and not Division or Adhesion. And then the Fused thief trying to steal the King's drop from the Thaylen City vaults only use Illumination. So do you think that Voidbinding only allows for them to perform one surge? or that they haven't been using the other surge that they have been given.
  5. From the album: General SA Art

That young archer (later Teleb) from Dalinar’s flashbacks. (Chapter 3)
  6. Here me out. I was thinking on the reason for Recreance. In the book, the cause was said to be because the radiants found out that the original voidbringer were humans. This seemed strange to me, seeing that a nahel bond is an extremely intimate bond, that they would just kill off their spren for this fact. Also, it's strange to me that they seemed to be horrified about the epiphany, yet do nothing to remedy the situation, the Parshendi remained as mindless slaves, treated like chulls. You would think that they may start feeling pity for the natives. This is where the theory comes in. The reason for Recreance is not related to the reality of Parshendi, but it more of an insurance for the future. Just as Leras from mistborn made plans for after his death, honor may have made his own plan for after his death. It is known from Dalinar's vision that Honor was still alive during the Recreance, and in Oathbringer, we learn that Honor was starting to lose his mind around Recreance. Honor and the radiants of the time made a plan, an investment for the future, the Recreance may be an insurance for the future that both the humans and the bonded sprens agreed about. So where is this Going? In the world today we have maybe a couple of thousands of these heavily invested entity right under odiums nose, (preservation's mist anyone) which may turn out to become the turning point that tips the scale. We know that Odium is not all-knowing just from the fact that he thought Shallan was an Elsecaller, a lie that she told. So it is quite possible that Odium may be fooled into thinking that the radiants abandoned their oath because of the truth. All just a theory that was orbiting in my mind. I wanna know what you guys think.
  7. So, in Oathbringer, we found out that Humans were the original Voidbringers. We also found out that modren Voidbringers are led by the Fused -- Ancient spirits of past Singers given great power by Odium taking control of a modren Parsh body. We know that the Oathpact was formed to keep the Parshspren imprisoned on Braize.. This means that the history of the Desolations is as such: Humans came with Odium to Roshar. They are given Shinovar to inhabit. --Girl Who Looked Up-- Humans have begun to spread beyond the bounds of Shinovar, and are violently taking land. The First of Desolations. --Odium offers some deceased Singers great power, and they accepted-- The Parsh have begun to side with Odium, as opposed to Honour and Cultivation. --Oathpact formed with Honour and the Ten Heralds-- Humans have now sided with Honour, and the cycle of Desolations has begun. Somewhere in here, Spren begin to mimic the Honourblades and bond with Humans -- It is unknown how Binding worked before this. --Aharietiam happens-- The Heralds, all but Talenel, have given up. The Oathpact is being maintained by a single Herald. The Knights Radiant stand guard over Humanity, and protect it from the False Desolation. --The Knights Radiant trap Ba-Ado-Mishram, ending the Forms of the Singers. The Recreance happens-- Many years later, Words of Radiance happens. The True Desolation has begun.
  8. Hello Everyone, I would like to know who the art depicts inside the covers of Oathbringer. Does anyone know the answer? Also curious if there is any official art of the characters? I am brand new to the site and pretty sure I will find the answer shortly after I publish this to the community. BUT OH WELL!! #anticipationspren
  9. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT READ OATHBRINGER. I PUT IT IN THE WRONG BOARD BY MISTAKE.
  10. So, this is a fragile half of a theory, but I've noticed a few interesting correspondences revolving around the dead blade Oathbringer. I'm currently listening through tWoK again, and at one point (I think it may have been during the chasm-fiend hunt) Dalinar summons oathbringer and when it drops into his hand he remarks upon something like 'the blade felt alive with energy, excited for the fight'. This is definitely paraphrased because I only have tWoK on audio so it's tough to pull quotes when I want them. Maybe someone else could back me up on this? What if Oathbringer once belonged to a dustbringer? From the little we know about the DBs, their spren likes to destroy things. Seems like it would follow that even a dead blade could get excited by a fight. By destruction. Also from what we know of Dalinar in his younger days, I would say he could have somewhat fit the bill for a dustbringer. This might explain why the blade doesn't scream as much for Dalinar as other blades do when he touches it in OB. Is it possible that; by carrying the blade for years and exhibiting the attributes of the order to which the blade once belonged, he has just barely begun to awaken Oathbringer similar to how Adolin is awakening Maya? Mini-point: We know that Oathbringer was once carried by the Sunmaker, who was on more or less the same path as Dalinar takes while carrying the same blade. This doesn't give me very good evidence for my theory but it's another point of interest. To be clear I don't think he will continue to awaken Oathbringer since he no longer carries the blade and has subsequently bonded the stormfather. I do think something weird is going on with that blade though, potentially beyond the stormfather's explanation that it simply 'remembers his oaths'. Even that is somewhat vague, considering that Dalinar has most likely only said an oath, singular; which the blade would remember. This being the initial oath of the KR, which all orders speak. Unless the blade once belonged to a bondsmith, which I doubt considering the relative few bondsmiths which have ever existed; I think it unlikely that Oathbringer would remember the ideals of a bondsmith beyond the first. Now that I think about it there might be only a single bondsmith dead blade. I seem to recall something saying there was only one bondsmith in the last generation of KR, therefore at the time of the recreance. There is also the obvious similarity between Dustbringer and Oathbringer. I know we don't know anything about the DB's oaths yet but it could follow what we do know if they swear something to do with righteous destruction, perhaps? For a dustbringer, bringing destruction could be the same as bringing oaths. I submit that Dalinar, in his youth, could have been accidentally living according to the ideals of the dustbringers, and that is in fact the 'oaths' that the blade remembers. It's possible that he even swore certain oaths to himself aligning with those of the dustbringers. (Promising to himself to never again covet Gavilar's throne comes to mind) Could this point to the first step of awakening a dead blade? It certainly fits with what we know about Adolin reviving Mayalaran; as he also has been bonded to her for a matter of years and has also been exhibiting traits of an Edgedancer. Alternately: though I find this less likely. What if the traits of the spren/order start to influence the one who is bonded to the blade? Maybe by carrying the blade long enough and following its subconscious promptings, one could intuit the path to awakening the dead blade. The spren could have an understanding of what it requires to awaken them and so give the carrier little pushes in the right direction. So, that's as far as I've gotten with this. Lots of supposition here but I'd love to see what you all think. Even if I'm wrong it may be an interesting discussion. I'll plug this thread too as it's along similar lines and helped me out with inspiration to start my own thread. [OB spoilers] Is Maya alive?
  11. I read Oathbringer (twice, actually ;P) but the whole deal with Heralds is confusing me. What exactly happened with the Recreance and Aharietiam? The Stormfather is blaming Honor for not preparing the Radiants before he died. And some of the Heralds betrayed the other Heralds by leaving them in Damnation? I dunno. Can someone explain that? Also, how are they not dead. At least, Ash and Taln aren't. Don't know if there are others.
  12. This is a theory thats more a half asleep concept than anything, but I wanted to get it out here and in thoughts before it faded away. I entirely expect this to be quickly torn apart, but here it is. First off, the Spiritual Realm, unlike the Cognitive and much unlike the physical, is if I recall correctly mentioned somewhere as 'All times, all places' which is why some tapping of it can see the future etr. So, when it comes to Spirit Realm, space isn't really an option/issue. Second, in Elantris, there is a religion set known as Shu-Keseg, Shu-Korath, and Shu-Dereth. These effectively represented by my understanding, Unity through understanding, control, and love respectively. Also by my understanding, Shu-Korath represents Dominion while Shu-Dereth represents Devotion. Now here is my thought. Dalinar has mentioned 'vision' like happenings including before bonding with the Stormfather. He has mentioned a similar feel, yet not the same. He has heard the voice of someone telling him to Unite them, which also has been seen by his brother. Some of these have again not been sent by the Stormfather. Once he does bond with the storm father, he gains spiritual adhesion. What if the Unity isn't Honor or anything related to that but instead somehow a mixing of Dominion and Devotion, which are two big parts of dalinars personality with Dominion being the first part of his life mixed with Devotion to his brother? It would be interesting to see if that was a hint with Shu-Keseg being the 'origin' of the two other religions that represent the shards, its focus being entirely unity before split into two factions. Another note that might be to this effect is it would make sense it being two shards fused together as that would look closer to Adonalsium, which would explain Odiums panicked words of 'We killed you!' as he probably hasn't seen Harmony before/yet so this would be his first time running into such a being. Having written this out, it seems far less plausible I admit, still I'm curious to see others thoughts on it.
  13. In the list of Alethi wines, Nazh leaves some annotations. One is, when pointing to the horneater lagar, “this is responsible for that embarrassing tattoo of mine. My guess is a shade, since he’s from Threnody.
  14. So, as I read Chapter 31 and met the "Flying Fused" (trademark pending) - the voidbringers who chased Kaladin into the air - I had to remind myself which two surges Windrunners had again. Well I keep a folder on my PC with all kinds of pics, charts, and the like related to Cosmere novels. When I went digging for a surgebinding chart, I also came across something I downloaded in 2014 named "Voidbinder Chart." Then I realized that the symbols on that chart matched one that I had misnamed as "Surgebinding Chart." So I realized that it was actually a VOIDBINDING CHART! I have attached both files for your viewing pleasure. ← Voidbinder Forms ← Surgebinder Types / KR Orders Kaladin's exploits in Chapter 31 show us that there is a voidbinder analog to windrunners (or Skybreakers). You'll notice that the surge glyphs on the voidbinding chart corrupt the symmetry of the surge glyphs on the surgebinding chart by bisecting them along the vertical axis, rotating the left side along the horizontal axis, and putting them back together. For example... The idea being that there is a relationship between voidbinding and surgebinding. I'm suggesting that the relationship is that each of the magic systems operate along similar pathways resulting in a similar expression of the magic. The difference is what is powering the magic, or in more precise terms, whose investiture is powering the magic. However, no matter where it comes from something about Roshar is going to force the investiture to follow along a predetermined pathway. I imagine this is similar to how some appliances can accept batteries or power via an AD/DC adapter, no matter how the electrons are supplied, they will be sent through the circuitry to achieve the same result (of course there's no alternative to electrons when powering electrical appliances, whereas there are 16 different sources of investiture in the Cosmere). So, maybe a Mistborn example would be better... Highlight for Mistborn spoiler: Ruin's investiture (via hemalurgy) affected metal in ways that were in line with the powers granted by Preservation's investiture (via allomancy) on Scadrial; that is, you have to use a steel spike to steal a coinshot's abilities and you have to use a copper spike to steal memories. There are some oddities, but you get my point. There's also a blending of the two shards' investiture that resulted in a balanced blend of both powers (i.e. Feruchemy). So, similar to the Mistborn magics, the Rosharan magics operate along similar lines no matter which Shard's investiture is powering the magic. Obviously there will be important differences between the magic powered by the blended investiture of Honor & Cultivation (i.e. surgebinding) and that powered by Odium's investiture (voidbinding). I suspect that voidbinding is the literal opposite of surgbinding (it accomplishes the same effect in a opposite manner - if surgebinding pushes, then voidbinding pulls and vice versa - but that's a different post. The question is whether voidbinding is the analog of Feruchemy (a mix of all three shards' investiture) - a result that works well assuming that the voidspren are corrupted or fallen radiant spren - or whether voidbinding is the analog of Hemalurgy (the magic that comes from only/mostly Odium's investiture). Regardless, I think I've proved a solid connection between voidbinding and surgebinding and that it should result in voidbinders resembling surgebinders. Again, the flying voidbringers in chapter 31 strongly support that conclusion. However, that leaves two "problems"... One is the yellow spren and the other is which surgebinders resemble StormForm. I don't think the yellow spren is a problem so much as it supports my theory. Let's put the questions about her to bed... That leaves the question of which order of the KR is analogous to StormForm. Well, my best guess is that StormForm is likely to match the powers of the Dustbringers/Releasers. StormForm released the Everstorm. Lightning isn't that different from fire and the essence associated with Chach is spark. However, I'm not completely sure that I'm right because we haven't seen much from Malata yet. Here are my best guesses: 1. Windrunners → ??? 2. Skybreakers → Smokeform - Kaladin's pursuers in Ch. 31 3. Dustbringers → Stormform * 4. Edgedancers → ??? 5. Truthwatchers → Nightform 6. Lightweavers → Mediationform 7. Elsecallers → Scholarform (?) This may or may not be a form of power. 8. Willshapers → ??? 9. Stonewards → Decayform * 10. Bondsmiths → ??? * Stormform could very easily be the Bondsmith analog with the storms and stuff; they also seem to be guiding/leading the non-Fused parshmen in Ch. 31 * I'm really not sure who matches up with Decayform since the details about them are so vague in the song about them from WoR. I based by guess on this line: "Watch where you walk, your toes to tread. O'er hill or rocky riverbed" It just sounds like stone/walking on stone is involved here. That's it. Let me know what you think!

    Shardcast: Moash

This week on Shardcast we talk about Moash, and the controversy revolving around him in Oathbringer. We analyze his role in Oathbringer, our thoughts, and more. Oh we also talk about Elhokar. No reason... We also make some tangents about Star Wars and Hoid. Of course there are big Oathbringer spoilers here! Our cast today is Eric (Chaos), Ian (WeiryWriter), Matt (Comatose), and Alyx (FeatherWriter). I mostly was able to remove Alyx's microphone whir, and we are saying the word "like" less. Professionalism! Here's a link to at least an image of the Dan Wells newsletter: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/304795942719062017/398891598903246848/received_2181197685227523.jpeg
  16. Maybe I should pit this on the theories area but I'm not especially confident, so here it goes... Is it possible that the Night Watcher takes something from one person and gives it to another? For example: a guy named George wants to learn to farm buts is a great warrior. The Night Watcher takes his ability so skillfully swing a sword, and gives him the ability to farm. Then Bill comes along and wants to be a great warrior, but has no skill. The Night Watcher offers George's curse, not able to swing a sword, and gives it to Bill (meaning Bill now has Georges ability to swing a sword). Then takes a skill/part of Bills and gives it to someone else. Its a continual pattern and could explain why Cultivation herself had to give Dalinar his specific Curse and Boon as the Night Watcher simply didn't have the ability... Could this be how it works or am I just off?
  17. This week we have a spoooooky episode. It's Oathbringer's Part Four Epigraphs, which talk about the Unmade. We spitball all sort of crazy things about the backstory of the Unmade, and then delve into all the epigraphs. We talk about all of your favorites of these creepy Eldritch horrors. Today we have Kerry (KChan), Ian (WeiryWriter), Eric (Chaos), and Ben--Overlord Jebus, who's joining us on the podcast for the first time! You can complain to Jebus about his bad audio, I did my best. For answers on spren fishing you can see our video where Jebus went to the London signing!
  18. I'd like to preface this by saying that I always was and still am a huge fan of Sanderson's work and I have a lot of respect for him as a writer; This post is partly to give criticism and partly to have others convince me that this was a good decision. So I'm sorta writing this from memory because I don't have a copy of Oathbringer at hand, I would appreciate any corrections as I'm no Archivist. As I'm sure most of us know (I actually just found out earlier this morning), Kaladin's final fight with Szeth has been altered from the original to state that Kal hesitated and Szeth died because of the storm instead of being stabbed through the neck. This is a good point, and we'd already seen Kaladin take some huge steps towards holding this ideal in his heart above all else... But at the end of Oathbringer, when Kal is tasked with protecting Dalinar from Amaram, it feels like Kaladin is using he excuse of protection to take his vengeance. It just feels wrong to me, and against Kal's oaths. He should not be glad to have the opportunity to square off with a demon from his past, that is more of an act of vengeance. In the end, Kaladin would have killed Amaram if given the chance, and he feels no remorse when Rock does the killing blow. Given the far more personal nature of this conflict, this honestly seems like an even worse act of vengeance than what happened to Szeth originally. So how is this any different? Again I'm writing this all from memory and I would appreciate clarification.
  19. From the album: The Girl who Looked Up

Most of my work comes from speedpainting every day (It was my resolution), but I wanted to slow down for this one and give you guys some of my line work. This scene really jumped out at me from how Sanderson described it.
  20. Happy New Year everyone and welcome back to 17th Shard's YouTube channel! I've got a little New Year's treat for all of you. Whilst I work on my Oathbringer analysis, I wanted to make my own little first reaction/review video. I wrote this script almost straight after the book came out even if it took me a few weeks to put this together. There is a non-spoiler section at the start so you don't need to watch it all the way through. I hope you've all had a great New Year and I look forward to seeing all your comments on how much you disagree with me on my pros/cons of Oathbringer!
  21. Hail, fellow 17th shardians! So, I'm not sure if someone has posted this yet, but I realized something as I was skimming through the end of Oathbringer. I looked upon page 1136 and found a quote when Dalinar smashes all of everything together. After he did that a parshwoman asks who he is. He responds with "I am Unity". An important thing to note for this theory is that every shard has its name capitalized. Preservation, Ruin, Harmony, Odium, Honor, Cultivation, etc. Noting this, and seeing how Unity is also capitalized, and how Odium has begun to fear Dalinar, I think that Dalinar will take up the shard, should it exist, of Unity. I dont really know how it would work very well, but maybe Dalinar would take up Honor first, which is more obvious with the fact that he summoned that perpendicularity. I'm not entirely sure, though, if it will be a combination of Honor and something else, or if it is an entirely different shard. That is about as much as i could find regarding this theory. Please leave criticisms or other supporting facts, if you could. That would be nice.
  22. From the album: The Girl who Looked Up

Leaving description intentionally vague on this one for now.
  23. From the album: The Girl who Looked Up

Another poster-style piece in Shadesmar. I guess I'm just drawn to the place!
  24. Oathbringer spoilers! Which ideal gives you shardplate? is radiant shardplate inhabited by a spren? what advantages does radiant shardplate have over normal plate? Are shards basically just really powerful spren? could a shard betray its name? do shards need planets? Sorry About the long list of questions
