  4. Hi, Sharders! So, ever since the Knight Radiants Order Quiz came out and we got to know a little bit more about the specific traits related to each order I've been compulsivelly trying to sort every one of my favorite charachters from books, movies, TV series, anime or mangas, games and so on.... But it turns out I'm in quite a pickle in a couple of chases, cause I'm just can decide wich order fits them best. That's when I said to myself "Hey everybody in the 17th seems to be pretty good at super-annalizing this kind of subject, let's ask them" So I would like this to be a thread where anybody could propose a charachter ( any charachter from any format of entertainment) and everybody who knows about the charachter here on the Shard ( we all seem to have pretty good taste, after all we all love BS) can go ahead and say wich order they think would be a better fit and why? To start, I'll just propose a fantasy classic I think most people know Harry Potter, so I'll ask for him, Hermione and Ron; but if you are a fan feel free to speculate on any of the charachters. And to get more in topic I'll bring up ASoIaF, wich is sort of a personal favorite. Is anybody there even KR material?, maybe the Starks( Jon, Arya, Sansa.. Ned is definitively the embodyment of honor)

  6. Just saw First Man and while I am definitely biased (major space history nerd) I think its the best movie I've seen in years. The visuals are astounding and the technical aspects are generally portrayed accurately. I particularly love the attention to Armstrong's performance during Gemini 8 as it was a critical factor in his selection as commander of apollo 11 but very few people are aware of it. If you have any interest in space exploration you should definitely see this. I have always found that no matter how astounding our fiction it is difficult to compete with the true stories of the space program for legendary achievement. edit; just realized I should have put this in entertainment discussion
  7. Look at this, and you will understand my reasoning... https://www.theverge.com/2016/10/27/13444738/brandon-sanderson-cosmere-movies-way-of-kings-mistborn
  8. So, probably like everyone else I was kinda disappointed when I first read that TWoK was going to be adopted into movie first, and almost lost all hope when I saw that the Saw movie guys involved in it. But I still had some hopes for Mistborn at least. And today I read a story on deadline (from earlier this year), that they have hired F Scott Frazier for movie adaptation. I checked his IMDB page and now I have completely lost hope in Cosmere adaptation. Why ? because the guy has only 3-4 or movies under his belt. And all of them are solid 5/10 junk movies. I can almost foresee Cosmere movies joining the long list of failed adaptations. ;(
  9. Arrival has been an obsession of mine since first seeing it. The way it unfurls a deep mystery surrounding a unique language which turns eventually into to something VERY unexpected. SPOILER ALERT (Major for Arrival + Minor for The Cosmere Novels) – If you haven't seen Arrival, go watch it. If you haven't read Mistborn, the current Stormlight books, or Elantris, go right now. Read them. Thank me later. Then continue reading this. While Sanderson has talked about magic systems in films such as Harry Potter and Star Wars, there's something much more to Sanderson's books that I don't think any film has quite captured until now. The unravelling of mystery through discovering the truth about how the world works. Let me explain this. In Mistborn we see the world through Vin. Much of Vin's story takes place doing research and trying to decipher the truth about Allomancy, Feruchemy, and Hemalurgy. It's through discovery and revelation that the plot unfolds. Same goes with Stormlight, our bookworm being Shallan. It's through her's and Kaladin discovery that most of the plot moves forward. Finally, the entire story of Elantris is built upon Raoden discovering the truth about the Shaod. While it's Sanderson's non-cliche form of Fantasy that makes him stand out in this genre, the true stroke of intrigue is that each of his stories is built upon mystery – and a very unique type of mystery, almost like solving scientific ones. In most mystery stories, the truth is built upon "Who did it?" or "What actually happened here?" but Sanderson presents very different and unique mysteries built around understanding the world and the way it really works. Arrival, as far as I see it, is the first film to do this. We've seen similar mysteries in Animes, such as Full Metal Alchemist, and in shows such as Stranger Things, but Arrival is the first film of it's kind to dive deep into a mystery that pays off with an almost magic-system-like revelation in the end. Our protagonist explores a language and tries to decipher the alien's intent. Her discoveries lead to her having the ability to see time linearly almost allowing her to time travel, in a sense. It's an ability anybody can learn, it seems, but it takes a deep understanding of a language very few are likely to be able to interpret and learn. Anyway, what are your thoughts here? Do you agree? Also, any other films you think fall into this category?
  10. Sometimes I can't get the Cosmere out of my head. Well it makes sense, they are just about the best books ever written. But when you have such great books with no movies or television series (as of this moment) it can make you look at the actors and characters in other media. There are lots of potential actors who could play our favorite Cosmere characters. But there are also existing characters in movies, books, TV shows, and Anime who just seem like they would be perfect to play a character. What are your daydream character actors? What characters from existing media remind you of your favorite Cosmere characters? This week I was re-watching "Attack on Titan" and I realized that there is a character that looks and fights like Vin. Mikasa seriously could be a stand in for Vin, it's almost too perfect. They are both crazy awesome fighters who leap across buildings, wield a pair of blades, and fight by instinct like no one else does. They both are kinda broken but love their best friends and will do everything they can to protect them. "When she fights, she is the blade. When she loves, she is the kiss. In that way, she was more human than any others that I have known" TenSoon -Shadows of Self Here is a video of some of Mikasa's best moments. SPOILER ALERT! GRAPHIC IMAGERY! But Attack on Titan is crazy amazing. I recommend you watch it. Mikasa is the best, and she is the anime version of Vin, my favorite Mistborn!
  11. What's up guys? Coming from the Stormlight thread, where some of us fans got together and started crafting cool posters and trailers for potential Stormlight movies, how cool would it be to have one for mistborn as well? One very large advantage for mistborn over Stormlight is that the first trilogy is actually finished, so a movie trilogy is actually much more feasible than Stormlight. We know what is going to happen and how it ends. And we don't have to split each book into three movies either, heh. Anyways, while not as visually arresting as Stormlight (what with them actually using light) mistborn still has an incredibly cool magic system, and all of us know how awesome and cinematic the fight scenes are (Kelsier vs inquisitior still gives me chills). So go crazy and bring the world of mistborn to the screen! My personal poster for mistborn. Ash falling from the sky, Kredik Shaw standing imposing and black, with it thousand spikes. In the foreground, the Lord Ruler watches over a thousand slaving skaa. Tagline: What happens when the chosen one fails? Go crazy!
  12. Soooo... yeah... I've pretty much reached my fan-girl quota for the next five years with all of the new trailers that have come out recently. For example: Captain America: Civil War (almost died at this one) Batman vs. Superman (again... almost died...) TMNT 2 (A fandom that began at a very young age that has not ended... and probably never will.) Star Trek: Beyond (Who doesn't like Star Trek??) X-men: Apocalypse (just... wow...) There are more but I think you get the point... What movies are y'all most excited to see in 2016?
  13. Credit to LarkoftheRiver for this awesome idea! Every Saturday at 8:00 pm, eastern time. Us Sharders will get together on 17th shard chat a chatzy while watching the same movie at the same time, discussing it as we go along. Here is the link to the room, and the password is m1stb0rn. This thread is for voting on movies and other planning! No R rated, please. Cast your votes here!
  14. I know I heard Brandon talk about the Cosmere movie rights as an entire unit in one of his signings but I can't find it now. It was in the context of how Marvel/DC/etc are connected universes and how that's big in Hollywood right now and he mentioned that he sold the entire Cosmere tv/movie rights (minus one series I believe) to someone but he couldn't say who specifically. I just want to know if anyone has a source on that because I want to hear the wording again. It would have been on a Shadows of Self tour I believe. Definitely recent. And yes I've done my best to look for myself for mention of this on here and outside of the forums but I came up dry. Thanks guys.
  15. Pretty simple. Which is your favorite super hero universe? The Arrow, The flash, Batman etc.? Iron Man, Captain America, etc?
  16. With the new Hobbit trilogy finally finishing this December, an important question can be asked: was the series a good adaptation of the book? I for one have been somewhat unimpressed, but that is more based on the liberties to extend the plot past its original two-movie format. The overall movies have been pretty good, they just take even more liberties than the original LOTR trilogy. What are some movies that have been well-written adaptations of the book or series they represent? What are some horrible adaptations?
  17. I don't mean for the title of this post to come across too strongly, but I just don't get all the excitement about Sanderson's books being potentially made into movies. Far more often than not, I hate it when great books get made into movies. You've all heard the phrase, "Yeah, but the book was waaaay better," after watching a movie, right? Well, how much moreso will that be the case for some of the best books around? Off the top of my head, I can think of the following list of movies which were, in my opinion, better than their corresponding books: - The Shawshank Redemption That's it. That's the list. People who make big-budget movies don't "do" story-telling anymore, and certainly not epic tales. They make movies where people blow things up, stitched together with a superficial plot structure. And if there's one thing that Brandon Sanderson is an expert at, it's telling an epic story. Even a story that he admittedly wrote with a movie in mind, Steelheart, wouldn't be the same on the big screen. Some of the best laughs I got from that book were from David's horribawful metaphors, and I just don't think that would translate well on-screen. They'd go over about as well as gasoline on a waffle. The only way to do "epic" story-telling nowadays is with a TV series, but would you trust any company with, for example, the Mistborn epic story? I generally consider HBO the best at telling stories on TV currently, but they'd have to "HBO it up" by giving Kelsier some love scenes with some noble he actually ended up brutally murdering in Luthadel and by having things like one of Vin's crews stealing from a few dozen naked men & women in a brothel. And let's not even get into where they would put certain hemalurgic spikes. I mean, heck, they somehow made the Game of Thrones/Song of Ice and Fire series even more graphically violent and sex-filled than the books, and I wouldn't have thought that was possible. I guess I'm just jaded on the whole movie and TV industry. The most recent prime example of this phenomenon came with the Ender's Game movie. OSC fans had waited 30 years for a movie version of that book to get made, and Card even (eventually) got a deal where he could have some measure of editorial control over the product. And even though they bent over backwards to try to keep the movie relatively close to the book, it still ended pretty badly. I mean, the movie wasn't horrible, but so much of the nuance and soul of the two books (Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow) were lost. Even if they wanted to make a sequel after the movie flopped at the box office, they had changed so much about the Enderverse world that the sequels would practically be impossible to pull off with a straight face. Don't clamor for a movie about your favorite Brandon Sanderson book to get made. Enjoy the visuals and the world that you create in your imagination based on the vivid descriptions Brandon gives us in the books! That's the best possible movie (to me, at least).
  18. If we lived in the Cosmere, how would our songs, quotes, movies, etc. be changed? For example: Now Your Just Some Bridgeman That I Used to Know. (Now Your Just Somebody That I Used to Know) Cosmere Wars (Star Wars) Hoid Who (Doctor Who) Settlers of New Skadrial (Settlers of Catan) Studio Shash (Studio C)
  19. Hello fellow sharders, After being clinically obese since I was 2 years old, dozens of medically-supervised weight-loss attempts, and cortisol levels off the charts preventing me from being successful, I'm finally going in for bariatric surgery (VSG for those in the know) on Feb 12. That said, I'm going to be laid up for a while recovering before I can return to work, tooling around the yard, or hiking. As one Sanderfan who's read all of his works several times over to the rest of you, any suggestions for other books or movies I might enjoy while still on large doses of painkillers?
  20. I have watched a few Studio Ghibli movies: My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and The Secret World of Arrietty. I had watched them when I was younger, and some of them again when I was in college. I just watched Howl's Moving Castle the other day for the first time, and I thought it was a wonderful story and my new absolute favorite. I plan on watching Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (directed by Hayao Miyazaki) and I also heard that Studio Ghibli produced a Tales of the Earthsea movie too (based on Ursula Le Guin's novels). I really loved the characters in Howl's Moving Castle (I watched the dubbed version). They made me laugh and smile constantly throughout. I also thought the animation was beautiful and so detailed. The plot was great and the ending even better. It didn't occur to me until I watched Howl's Moving Castle but Studio Ghibli movies always seems to have strong female main characters, which is difficult to do right a lot of the time. Studio Ghibli managed to do it well time and time again. Anyone else love Studio Ghibli Movies? Anyone else love Howl's Moving Castle? What are some of your favorites?
  21. I recently read a Cracked article about some upcoming remakes coming on us in the next few years. Needless to say this is one of the reasons I'm hoping to see a Mistborn movie come out. Hollywood needs some fresh material and new blood in it. Seeing the same thing get remade over and over again is dragging on. I'm looking forward to something new and exciting from the movies and I'm just not feeling it from the early 2014 season.
