  1. As a Truthwatcher and somebody interested in linguistics, as I was recently reading through the threads in which Glyph phonemes and the Women’s Script were decoded, I decided I wanted to try decoding the name of my Knight Radiant order in Alethi based on it’s glyph because it seemed like a fun thing to do. This is almost certainly wrong, but I wanted to see how likely others thought my transliteration was. Glyph with my guess at glyph phonemes, second image is glyph with phonemes written over part of it: Which is in turn primarily based on the Calligraphic phonemes and to a lesser extent (for the F and the B the standard and hybrid sets. This would put the name of the order in Alethi at one of several things. The options that I found were: Nufbo (half of the glyph is read from right to left, which would make sense due to the fact that the glyphs in the key are facing the direction of the phonemes on the right half of the glyph) Nufbobfun (entire glyph read from right to left) Obfun (half of the glyph is read from left to right, this one sounds the most Alethi to me, this one and “Obfunufbo” have added credibility, I think, because the Women’s Script is read from left to right. Obfunufbo (entire glyph is read from left to right) Nufob (Nufbo but with the f and o reversed) Nufobofun (Nufbobfun but with the f and the o reversed) Bofun (Obfun but with the f and the o reversed) Bofunufob (Obfunufbo but with the f and the o reversed) Anyway, what do you all think? Which one of these seem the most likely? Do any of them seem likely?
  2. From the album: Willshaper Motto - Glyph Attempts

This is my second attempt at an "I will seek freedom design", but I like this version better. For those interested all glyph designs will be uploaded here https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1LOk6vQQESRvNeLzw80SdX4krxLSs3Rm1?usp=sharing and the subreddit for the callygrapher's guild is here https://www.reddit.com/r/CalligraphersGuild/
  3. I'd originally been trying to shape it so that the letters formed a santhid shell as seen as above, since that's the part sailors would see, but in the end I accidentally wound up making it look like the shell above water with a big eye and tentacles trailing below, which I thought was a pretty cool coincidence. Comments and critique welcome.
  4. Hello Fans! A friend and I want to get a tattoo of the glyph for Honor in the calligraphic style. I have drawn it out but for 1) I'm not if it's right, and 2) I can't make it pretty. Can anybody help??
  5. I really like making Alethi Glyphs from an English word. It’s very calming. But occasionally, I try to make a glyph containing one or more of the letters C, Q, W or X. They don’t have phonemes. What should I do in this situation. Obviously the Alethi don’t use those letters, but what should I do if I want to?
  6. EDIT: I've moved MOST of this post to this page on Coppermind. There are maybe a few images here that aren't included in that page, but it's mostly redundant things and that page is organized much better. I'm not going to continue updating this page. I'd like to collect all of the glyphs we've seen so far in Stormlight. (not counting Thaylen) Above the images I'll provide any names/translations/meanings and source that are known. If you see anything that I'm missing please share. Preferably with an image and relevant information! Standard Phoneme Set Basic Glyphs Gesheh = Bridge Image from Bridge Four tattoos artwork in WoR. Translation from Isaac (?), somewhere in the Thaylen and Alethi Glyph Translation thread. This is combined with Vev (four) to create "bridge four". Shash = dangerous Image from Bridge Four tattoos artwork in WoR, translation in text Unknown = freedom Image from Bridge Four tattoos artwork in WoR. Numbers Number glyphs have been deciphered and are covered on the first page in the Thaylen and Alethi Glyph Translation thread. Included below are the samples we have of these numbers. From the Southern Frostlands map, the numbers 0 through 28 are shown (rotated 90 degrees) at the top and bottom of the page. They are: 0: 1 - 10: 11-20: 21-28: From the Rosharan System starchart, the numbers 1 through 10 are shown, numbering the gas giants in the system. They are: 1 - 10: From the Bridge Four Tattoo artwork, the following numbers are depicted: 3: 4: 7: 9: This glyph seems to be highly stylized so as to appear symmetrical with Kholin. 73: 1173: Glyphpairs Kholin (Khokh Linil) From Dalinar's chapter symbol and Alethi Warcamps artwork. Dalinar stylizes Khokh as a tower (shown) while Elhokar styles it as a sword. Both stylize Linil as a crown. Kezeras (Kecheh Zeras) = Highstorm Kalazeras (Kalak Zeras) = Everstorm Highprince Glyphs These are taken from the Alethi Warcamps artwork, the Battle at the Tower artwork, and the Battle at Narak artwork. Higher quality versions were provided in the Thaylen and Alethi Glyph Translation thread. A highly stylized version of Kohlin is provided in the Bridge Four Tattoo artwork. If the identity of the last four have been figured out, please let me know! 8. So we learn from the Glyphs shown in one of the Oathbringer art pages that Kalad is the Alethi glyph for Eternal, we also learn that the suffix Lin or Rin in a name means "Born Onto" in an Alethi name from the Dalinar chapters where he names Adolin and where he thinks about Renarin's name. Adoda means light and Lin means born onto so Adolin means Born onto Light. Renarin means he who is born onto himself because Evi didn't fully understand the Alethi naming conventions. So does Kaladin's name mean Born onto Eternity? Kalad meaning Eternal and the 'In suffix meaning "Born onto". (Ignoring for a second any other people with Kalad in their names...)
  9. Alright Sharders, I know it's a long shot - but the payoff would certainly be worth it. I've spent some time combing over the gorgeous portrait of Taln by Donato Giancola released by Tor today. As I was drawn into the piece, I couldn't stop staring at the glyphs etching the top step he's standing upon. A cursory search turned up no in-world glyphs, but I'm hoping I've missed something you can help us find. Does anyone have any insights into the particular language etched here? Or any insights as to possible meaning? Or else confirmation that the inimitable Donato created these glyphs with his artistic license so I can sleep tonight?

    RAFO glyph

A glyph for our favorite (umm…) answer. I'm putting it here because uploading to "general" does not work and it's not a SA fanart, even if the alphabet is Rosharian. Big thanks to Harakeke, who translated the alphabet used here. (warning, link leads to WoR subforum) I had to do some guessing for this one.

  11. This is a continuation of the glyph discussion from the Stormlight Archive Translation Guide. Please do not post plot-related spoilers in this thread. Nazh has infiltrated the Calligrapher's Guild and provided us with a very thorough analysis of Alethi glyphs, including a table of the component phonemes glyphmakers use as a starting point for Standard glyphs: I'm actually surprised how close we we got with deciphering some of them independently, given that we now know that the phonemes can be rotated, flipped, and distorted, mixed with Calligraphic phonemes, screw-you lines, and indecipherable symbols from the Dawnchant or something. There are also some nice tidbits in the other illustrations, including the Kholin "Sword & Crown" glyphpair. The "compass rose" only shows up once that I was able to spot. It's featured prominently in the Kholinar map. There are some sketch captions in the women's script which I assume someone has translated by now and some very pretty Thaylen writing around image borders. I especially like how the letters almost interweave like Celtic knotwork. The writing around the map says "Thaylenah". I took a quick skim over the Taker of Secrets text, but nothing jumped out at me. I'll take a closer look at it once I get there in the book. There's also a map that looks like the one that Shallan found in Amaram's study in WoR.
  12. Y'all might remember @Harakeke's thread from a while back about glyph translation. I decided I will try and translate the Radiant, Surge, and Fundamental Glyphs. Yes, I know the WoB about the original glyphs not being supposed to translate. Yes, I realize it'll probably be nonsense. Here goes. Notes: I am using an online editor called Photopea. It is free and works the same, and as well as photoshop. I know this because I have worked with photoshop. I am retrieving glyph translations from the Coppermind. Any and all assistance with this project is appreciated. Update 1: 3-19-19 Started translation on ten fundamental glyphs. Finished with 3/10. Letters in parenthesis are unconfirmed or not existing but added for understanding (Like Thaylen)
  13. Me and my family are into cosplay, specifically prop making and when we made Jezrien's Honorblade and I 3D printed the windrunner glyph, I noticed something odd: The center of the Glyph for the Windrunners looks like a stylized version of Jezrien's Honorblade from the end papers of Oathbringer. Once I noticed that, I started to think, so I started looking at the Radiant Glyphs, descriptions of the Honorblades we have seen (Jezrien's, Nale's, Taln's, let me know if there are others) and comparing the two. Then the pattern started to emerge. the centers of each of the glyphs looks like their associated Herald's Honorblade. Nale's looks like a stylized blade with two fullers, much like his Honorblade. The center of the stoneward glyph lookes like Taln's, which is described as being spike-like. I am working on mapping out potential blades from the other glyphs, but I wanted to share this while it was fresh on my mind.
  14. I am in the middle of rereading Oathbringer and I noticed that in Nazh's notes, the Rosharian glyph pair Kalad means eternal. And given that at least some of the Five Scholars went to Roshar, I think it is likely that Vasher named Kalad's Phantoms after that. Eternal Phantoms, Eternal guardians of T'Telir. It is one page 519 of the hard back copy I have.
  15. In JordanCon 2018, Isaac Stewart (Dragonsteel's art director) did a panel on creating Stormlight glyphs. We don't have full video for it, but we do have some. We mixed that in with the audio so you can feel like you're there at the panel. If you're into glyphs, maybe this will be of use to you! We apologize for the audio quality and mic bumps that occur every so often. Posted with permission from Dragonsteel Entertainment. Thanks Argent for your intro!
  16. I'm not sure if this has been stated or even noticed, but I was thinking about glyphs on Roshar, and I noticed that Adonalsium could possibly be related to the glyph Adoda, meaning light. (the reason this is in the OB spoiler board is because the first I had heard about the glyph Adoda was the naming of Adolin) Because I was thinking of Glyphpairs, I thought that Adonalsium might be a Glyphpair, or even a triplet of glyphs (not sure what the word would be for that) with -ium at the end. really, this is just a thought, but if anyone wants to add or tear down this idea, feel free.(but personally, I'd rather be of Cultivation than of Ruin.) sorry if this seems a bit scattered, but whenever i went back to change something in a sentence, it would highlight letters instead of just having that little black bar, so I couldn't add words without carving holes in the sentence, if someone knows why this is happening or how to fix it, please help. sorry if this seems a bit scattered, but whenever i went back to change something in a sentence, it would highlight letters instead of just having that little black bar, so I couldn't add words without carving holes in the sentencelike thisone knows why this is happening or how to fix it, please help.
  17. From the album: Roshar Cake

The “Unite Them” shirt was a special shirt for volunteers and attendees at the Utah release party for book 3 in the Stormlight Archives, “Oathbringer.” I was there as a volunteer in a Veil cos-play and as a beta reader for the book. If you have pictures from the event, I’d love to see them! The glyphs are one version of how you can right "Happy Birthday" in Alethi glyhs. Left is "happy", right is "birthday" done to look similar to a two-tired cake.

© DWhitney for cake. Dragonsteel for map and symbols.

  18. From the album: Glyphs

Ever since we got the official Alethi alphabet in Oathbringer, I've been playing around with making glyphs (hence my new avatar). These two holiday glyphs actually say Christmas and Hannukah. I realize this is a slightly unusual spelling for Hanukkah, but the double N worked better for the glyph, and apparently it is an acceptable variation.
  19. Greetings, friend. You may have noticed that many of the illustrations in the Stormlight Archives contain strange markings. I have determined that these markings are writing, and I have undertaken to decipher their messages. Crazy? Perhaps. But these markings are not simply decorative. They contain information about the Cosmere, hidden in plain sight. In The Way of Kings, we are introduced to the Alethi script. This is the writing system used by female scribes and scholars in Alethkar, understand? It shows up in the labels of Navani’s Notebook: Since the novel was first published in English, the labels were also “translated” into English, but Alethi letters were used to preserve the feel of the original diagrams. Each symbol stands for one letter – however Alethi has some letters that are not found in English (Th, Sh, Ch), and English has some letters that are not found in Alethi (C, Q, X, W). In Words of Radiance, we learn more about the languages of Roshar. Alethi script reappears, with greater variety. Navani’s Notebook again provides straightforward diagram labels directly transliterated from English into Alethi: (Translation credit goes to cris34b: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/6418-navanis-notebook-page-406-translation/?hl=navani) Shallan’s sketchbook provides more cryptic text, friend. First spotted and translated by jcoop513, the text here is hidden, and is written phonetically so that each letter is an approximation of how it sounds when spoken aloud. Based on the context, this is most likely a page of Jasnah's notes that Shallan appropriated to use as sketchpaper. Note that the transliteration of Jasnah's writing is very different from that of Navani's. Read aloud, the passage would be thus: Translation efforts are ongoing at http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/6619-shallans-drawing-page-354-alethi-script-translation-spoilers/. KalynaAnne traced over the partially-obscured letters by hand and was able to reconstruct several missing words: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/6487-thaylen-and-alethi-glyph-translation-glyph-key-revised-418/?p=233114 Alethi is not the only language spoken on Roshar. That would be crazy. The Map of the Southern Frostlands introduces us to the written language used in Thaylenah: As with Alethi script, the Thaylen in this illustration is simply transliterated English, and can be deciphered using the following key: Thaylen people are renown for smashing their consonants together when they speak, and this is reflected in their writing. Written Thaylen has no vowels and is written vertically, understand? Both the Alethi and Thaylen pages include numerals. Just as many different nations on Earth employ Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, etc.) is quite possible that all Vorin peoples (indeed perhaps most inhabitants of Roshar!) use the same numerals, even if their written languages differ. The numbers are written as follows: And now we come to glyphs, friend. Glyphs are written in syllables, with each syllable corresponding to a certain subcomponent of the glyph. Glyphs can be written three ways: a “standard” blocky form with syllables somewhat similar to Thaylen consonants, a “radial” form in which the glyph is warped to form a circular shape, and a “calligraphic” form in which the glyph can be warped into any shape. Often, the shape of a calligraphic glyph is reminiscent of the word it contains. Extra lines that do not represent syllables can be added to enhance the effect. For instance, a bookseller might advertise the name of his shop with a glyph shaped to resemble a book, understand? Many men in Alethkar are illiterate, relying on their wives or sisters to read documents to them aloud, but most can recognize certain important glyphs based on their shape alone. Alethi glyphs are not simply transliterations of English, but represent words in the Alethi language. The esteemed jofwu has compiled images of all known glyphs in another thread. Edit: The next bit is obsolete, as of Oathbringer. See p.519 for a key directly from the Calligrapher's Guild, courtesy of Nazh. My efforts to decipher the Alethi glyphs are ongoing, friend, but I present here what I speculate thus far: Please refer to the further pages in this thread for the latest developments in the 17th Shard's ongoing efforts to decipher these glyphs. Original first post, for posterity:
  20. Disclaimer: I don't know if anyone has already mentioned this so I apologize in advance if someone has beaten me to it. So I was very interested while reading Oathbringer when we actually learned that the names of characters has meanings. So then I was going through the artwork for Oathbringer and found this: On this print, Nazh has written out how the phonemes for glyphs work (which is awesome) and also the glyphs for the First Ideal of the Knights Radiant (which is even more awesome!). But I noticed that when he writes Everstorm it gets split into two words: "eternal" "storm" or "kalad" "zeras" = kalazeras (this is epic because now we know how to say Everstorm in Alethi!) But looking at it now I can see that "kalad", the glyph for "eternal", must be the basis for Kaladin's name and then added with the suffix -in it becomes something like "born unto eternity". I find this fascinating and I was wondering if there were any linguists among us who might be able to figure out the meanings of other names for the Alethi. Or maybe if we can figure out how naming works for the darkeyes? Thoughts anyone?
  21. From the album: Way of Kings Short Film

I met Brandon recently and decided to give him this remastered poster as a gift on canvas. This is now ultra HD, with the 'Linil' glyph stylised properly (Thanks to 17th Shard member BlackYeti for pointing that out), with a less distracting sky and several other small improvements. Enjoy!
  22. From the album: Words of Radiance Poster

The glyphs in the background mean "Freedom" (the wings on the top), and "Slave" (the shash on the bottom). Let me know what you think! I wouldn't be averse to making revisions if someone with better art tastes than I can suggest improvements!
  23. From the album: Shardblades

Here's the vector I made for the Sunraiser glyphs
  24. From the album: Way of Kings Short Film

As member BlackYeti helpfully pointed out, Elhokar's version of 'Linil' is stylised to look like a sword. Not being able to find an official depiction, I just drew up my own. On the left is the original Linil glyph that is stylised to look like a tower, and the right is my design. I tried to include the main strokes for the sword style, though I had no idea what the simple version of Linil actually looks like! Anyways, if any other fans can help me out with the small details, please feel free to get in touch!
  25. What two different glyphs/symbols are displayed behind/under Kaladin after he says the words of the Third Ideal? The first looks like a pair of wings (while he is in the hallway), and the second (after he drops down) looks like a sword . I am guessing one is the Knights Radiant.... the wings? And the sword is the Windrunners from the 10 orders illustration on Brandon's site. I am mostly curious about the winged sigil/glyph/symbol. I have the audiobooks, so if there is a Web link to an image, I would really appreciate it.
