  1. When Raoden disguises himself as Kaloo, did the illusion also affect his voice? Or was his voice the same? Or did he actually speak differently? I'm assuming it was probably not the same as his normal voice, otherwise at least Sarene would have recognized him immediately.
  2. From the album: Other Cosmere Art

Characters: Nazh (Threnody) Spook (Scadrial / Mistborn Era 1) Renarin (Roshar / Stormlight Archive) Hrathen (Sel / Elantris) Siri (Nalthis / Warbreaker) Steris (Scadrial / Mistborn Era 2) Among all the suggested characters, Spook gets the most votes. Good for him!
  3. I was listening to the Shardcast on the history of Sel (https://www.17thshard.com/news/shardcast/shardcast-history-and-cultures-of-sel-r539/) and they mentioned how the more modern group of people who would become known as the Elantrians first came upon the city already built and empty. Someone built Elantris and something happened to cause it to be devoid of people. There was speculation of a catastrophe or something wiping everybody out ... but what if they just left? We know of a worldhopping civilization that migrates in mass. They are on Roshar during the events of Stormlight Archive and call themselves the Iriali. Their nation on Roshar is called Iri. In Mistborn Secret History we meet a group of worldhopping Elantrians that call themselves the Ire. I don't think these two groups are the same, but I think this is a big hint that one of the previous planets the Iriali were on was Sel and they left in mass from Elantris which is why it was found fully built, but empty. They probably left via the shardpool in the mountains nearby. https://coppermind.net/wiki/Elantris_(city)#Discovery https://coppermind.net/wiki/Iri
  4. I understand investiture pretty well on the other planets. You can give or receive breath on Nalthis because the shard is Endowment. Allomancy is all about preserving or changing energy from one form to another. Hemalurgy is taken by harming someone else and the power leaks out. That makes sense. You have to honor ideals to become a radiant, etc. etc. AonDor just seems like writing magic spells in the air. How is that related to devotion or dominion? It's been a while since I read Elantris so maybe I'm missing something, but something like Forging seems like a much more blatant relation to Dominion. Can someone explain it to me?
  5. Hi! i would like to know the history origin and goals of hoid. Thank You!
  6. I was just wondering about Seons, like, can they hit stuff or pick stuff up or use the power of their Aon? Example: like could a Daa Seon make blasts of energy or a Ehe Seon create heat or fire?
  7. The epic fantasy genre is still relatively young, at least compared to other literary genres. The foundational work of creating an entirely new category of literature, one defined by the creation of an entirely new fictional world where the story takes place, is attributed to J.R.R. Tolkien. Everything Tolkien had done have become standard fantasy tropes: dark lords, medieval settings, elves and dwarves. Of interest here is the medieval settings part, which defines so much of the fantasy genre: fantasy world settings are mostly based on Europe, around the medieval time period in thought and technology and the nobility. I'm not referring to the quality here, which is it's own trope, but the idea related to class & bloodline & the divine right of kings. Brandon Sanderson is Mormon, so the portrayal of religion in his works is something that has been discussed a lot. You can find answers to most questions you might want to ask him regarding this on his site itself and there's plenty of discussion here on the forums, on reddit, etc. The trope of nobles and commoners in his works, however, is something that is not discussed enough in my opinion, and when it is, it's usually mentioned as a throw-away comment: "yes, we get it, Brandon, not all nobles (are bad)" This trope has evolved over time from its origin, the divine right of kings. In the Lord of the Rings the only difference between the line of Kings and the line of Stewards is their pedigree. Some people are apparently inherently superior and thus have the right to rule over the rest of them. Let's not get into the other critiques of LoTR like race or apologetics (I suggest looking into CS Lewis for more on this). Denethor was a bad ruler not just because he was a bad ruler but because he wasn't the rightful ruler. Aragorn comes and he's the rightful heir and everything's chill now. The themes are still kinda there in Sanderson's works too, the trope has been transformed but not truly subverted. In Mistborn era 1, book 2, Elend institutes a constitutional monarchy which is still very skewed with only 1/3 of the representatives being skaa. This assembly then boots him out, rightfully through Elend's own laws but Vin goes on a rampage of murdering and/or forcing his competitors to submit to his rule. In book 3, he decides that the time for debates and legislatures is later somewhere in the indeterminate future when the crisis is over. I do understand what the stakes were that motivated him to do the things he did. I'm simply pointing out a plot point. In era 2 of Mistborn, the legislative branch is divided into two halves: half elected and half aristocrats. The main protagonist is one of the aristocrats and one of the overarching character arcs for him was about accepting the responsibility of being an aristocrat. There are forces from outside of Scadrial who are involved in trying to topple this system. In Warbreaker, the God-King of Hallandren, Susebron was a figurehead ruler with the power being concentrated in the Court of Gods. The other main characters all belong to the ruling classes as well: two princesses, one of them also the queen, a member of the Court of Gods, and an enigmatic former ruler. The antagonists wanted to overthrow the system but are thwarted at the end by Susebron who comes into his powers after having been educated by the princess-queen and given back his tongue by magic. Hallandren's future looks just a bit brighter with its rightful ruler in power. In The Stormlight Archives much of the story revolves around the Kholin family, who reunified the broken kingdom of Alethkar. The idea of fighting against the Lighteyes does exist but that stuff is less important than unifying under them to face a greater threat. Also, Lighteyes are mostly descended from the ancient Knights Radiant whose eyes glowed the colour of their Order, that's where both the colour and the notion of superiority came from. In Elantris, the kingdom of Arelon moves on from plutocracy to monarchy, but we shouldn't worry because Raoden is pretty chill. ~spoilers for Aether of Night~ I'm not saying that these issues might not get resolved in future sequels. The Mistborn era 2 broadsheets seem to be hinting at civil unrest and discontent. And if @asmodeus's theory* is right, it might become a major plot point in eras 3 & 4 Stormlight might not just be about the fight against Odium but a fight against hatred. And again, I'm aware of the plot, circumstances and characteristics behind these noble characters. I'm just pointing out that these were actual plot points in the stories. Brandon has broken quite a few tropes in his prolific career but for now at least, it seems, that this is the trope that would not break *asmodeus' theory: Also, go read Powder Mage you guys! Edit: There is a subversion of this trope in Sanderson's work: White Sand. Making the Diem less dictatorial and more accountable is one of the most integral parts of the plot.
  8. I’ll type out a better theory later but this is the summary: The Set or the group Waxilliums uncle was apart of is actually the IRE or the elantrians from mistborn secret history. The shard Trell is actually Autonomy or the hosts of Autonomy and they were convinced by the elantrians to separate the shard Harmony back into ruin and preservation. The elantrians want Preservations shard so they can revive their own Shards. They used the original agreement between shards to not live on the same world and mix powers, to convince the shard Autonomy or the majority of its splintered power to separate ruin and preservation. Sorry for the messy bad grammar. Please pick this theory apart and maybe read between the lines to find out inbook reasons why what I said could be right.
  9. How did elantris start. Were their Aon Dor users before the city. Secret history spoilers Or did people discover the Aons had power and built the city and elantrians started being made? Always been curious to how it was started any ideas?
  10. This might have been done before, but what if we made an album based on Elantris? Just song titles! They don't have to be in order. For example: "Expect the Unexpected" (Prince Raoden's transformation.) "I Came All This Way (For What?)" (Sarene's arrival.) "Imposter in Illusion" (Raoden poses as Kaloo.) "Pain is an Open Dor" (I don't think I need to explain this one!) "Bring Me From the Brink" (Raoden temporarily turns into a Hoed.) "Fault Lines" (Magic is restored to Elantris.
  11. Hi! I'm fairly new to Brandon's works and this website, obviously. The first book of his I read was Skyward, which surprised me with its great humor and plot twists. I moved on to Warbreaker, and have since read Mistborn: The Final Empire, Elantris, and Steelheart. I still have to finish those series, and a long time yet to read The Way of Kings. I'm currently obsessed with The Wheel of Time, but have only managed to read 2 books because the others are always checked out at the library. Brandon's popularity makes it difficult to finish any series of his, but I'm making a valiant effort! See you guys in the Sanderson wormhole! - NorthStar Update: I finished TWoK and am starting on the sequel! Also, I've finally gotten my hands on the Reckoners series and the 3rd WoT book. Happy reading!
  12. I’m trying to compile a list of all the worldhoppers that have been shown to us so far in the Stormlight Archive. This is spoilers for all of the cosmere, FYI. Here is who I have so far: Hold: the beloved trickster Demoux: originally from Scadrial in the first epoch. Appears in the WoK interlude “ishi”. Chasing Hoid. Galladon: An Elantrian and friend of the king and queen of Elantra’s. Appears in the WoK interlude “ishi”. Chasing Hoid. some dude from white sand (the only Sanderson I haven’t read in its entirety) Is also with Demoux and Galladon in the WoK interlude “ishi” chasing Hoid. Swordmaster Zahel: most people know this is Vasher from Nalthis, the world in Warbreaker. Nightblood: the sword of black smoke, crafted by the five scholars. Vivenna: Abdicated queen of Idris, Highmarshal Azure, chasing Nightblood(?) Mraize: not much known. Has trophies from all over including a bird from “Sixth of the Dusk” Iyatil: From Scadrial, second epoch, one of the masked hunters. Mrall: pretty sure he is a Kandra from Scadrial. WoB (IIRC) Khriss and Nazh: This is a theory, hoping someone can confirm or deny; They are disguised as Ardents in Dalinar’s court - the young female ardent that talks to Navani on top of the scaffolding overlooking the “floating tower” fabrial experiment in WoR. the lighthouse keeper: in Oathbringer, the lighthouse keeper curses, “merciful domi!” Showing that he is from Sel. Felt: guides Dalinar to other Valley” in Oathbringer. He is originally from Mistborn epoch 1, a house spy for the Ventures. Thats all I have so far! Please add or correct or offer theories! Thanks everyone!
  13. I was wondering if there was a way to summarize the entire Cosmere in one sentence. My favorite that I have heard is "For storm's sake Hoid, what stormery are you up to now."
  14. Does Elantris have an economy? What do they have to sell? That is pretty clear - mostly AonDor. But what do they buy? It could be argued that AonDor creates a kind of subsistence economy. It can feed you and Elantris itself provides housing and public infrastructure. So what could you want that AonDor cannot give you? exotic stuff - travel is costly for Elantrians travel knowledge services - AonDor can make your dinner, fix your clothes and heat your home, but not easily put your room in order sex fame fashion Anything else?
  15. I finally read Elantris. This is what happened.
  16. Ok, another silly question, again, I have not read through the whole of Elantris, but am quickly gobbling it up. When Raoden becomes an Elantrian does he and other Elantrians ever have to or need to use the bathroom? Like they feel hunger and pain acutely, but what about needing the toilet?
  17. Since we already have Aon Daa for use as an offensive weapon, what would Aon Sheo (death) do? We never see it used, would it function sort of like the killing curse in Harry Potter?
  18. Ok so aona and skai , were they friends ? lovers ? Enemies ? Or was it more of a master -servent relationship with Dominion being the master ? Did they settle together or did Dominion follow Devotion knowing she would the easiest to ,u know dominate . Was skai thinking of establishing power over all or atleast a few shards and started with devotion ? But khriss mentions that d and d spent a lot of time molding society on SEL so could it be that Dominion was like consolidating his power or getting used to it. Like harmony has no idea what he should or shouldn't do with his power. I suppose the Sixteen faced similar problems at first. Or maybe they were both at war and weakened each other , thereby making it easy for rayse to finish them ? Also did aona hate dominion's hold over her and when odium came rebelled against him but was double Crossed ? Or was it the opposite and Dominion joined forces with odium to bring down devotion. I mean , skai probably knew rayse and thought he was a friend ? Or maybe Aona thought that way ? Also why did odium kill aona ? I mean wouldn't it more efficient if he could have made her devoted to him. Have her help in crushing other shards and then either betray her or just keep devotion like a pet ? How much do we know about them and thier actions and plans ?
  19. Hi, I am fairly new to Brandon’s books. I’ve listened to Elantris, Mistborn, and stormlight books. I know that Hoid appears in all three series of books and therefore assume these are all happening in the same “universe” what other books are included in this? I’m so intrigued by Hoid and who he is and what he is trying to accomplish. What else do I need to read if not to get more answers on Hoid (seems like Brandon is working up to something with him) but to get all the stories surrounding this “universe”?
  20. So as of late I have been pondering how exactly Hoid has such a seemingly insurmountable healing factor and how he has managed to live such a long time. Well I think we might have some clues from the; fused, returned, heralds, and our beloved survivor. All of whom found a way to keep themselves anchored to the physical/cognitive realm and refrain from passing on. The common denominator of course is that Shards and likely heavy amounts of investiture were involved. Why is this relevant? Well I think Hoid might actually have gone through a similar process during the shattering, since we know he was the only one there to refuse a shard (at least as of now) we don't know what impact the shattering might have had on the rest of those present when Adonalsium was killed. Anyway I think the shattering may have released enough investiture to give Hoid the same kind of immortality cognitive shadows have, he was just fortunate enough to still have his body at the time. As I read on the coppermind odium gave the fused a portion of his power so they could become cognitive shadows, but since they lack an anchor to the physical realm they require hosts. Heralds on the other hand have no bodies created for them at the start of each desolation. While I must concede neither the Heralds or Fused share Hoid's healing ability and this does somewhat hurt my theory I do think it is worth noting that Honor, Odiun, and Endowment are just shards yet they are able to create immortals. One could only imagine the magnitude of investiture Adonalsium must have had within it and I doubt that God went quietly into whatever awaited it. So I think the fact Hoid was alive and therefore tied to the physical realm gave him a more potent immortality and is why he seems simply unable to die. Hence, why nothing save Nightblood (seemingly the embodiment of entropy for the cosmere) well known to devour investiture is one of the few weapons that seems capable of causing him lasting harm. As always I must acknowledge this is just a crazed theory and I admittedly do not have much supporting evidence for my inference. I do hope you enjoyed this idea though. Sorry, also forgot to mention Elantrians who are also immortal, seemed unfair to leave them out. Yet another edition. As for why the others took up shards when they might have already been immortal. Well I think they just might not have been aware, and were likely eager to become gods.
  21. Botanica

    Elantris - Sarene

I finally drew a Sarene! (Originally for the gift exchange on tumblr.) + + + Alternative version Lineart Sketch Tools: automatic pencil, Photoshop CS3 + + + More Elantris and TES sketches Kiin’s Family (Kiin, Daora, Lukel, Jalla, Adien, Daorn, Kaise) Hrathen Sarene Raoden before turning into an Elantrian The Emperor's Soul chibi cast (From left to right: Zu, Bloodsealer, Shai, Hoid, Gaotona, Ashravan, Frava) & Three versions of Shai (Beggar, Normal, Shaizan) The Bloodsealer from TES
  22. From my understanding, every Cosmere magic system has a way to access the cognitive realm and worldhop. My question is then, do Elantrians do this with a variant of Aon Tia? Or is that bound by using distances as we see in the book - since you can't walk to the cognitive realm, could you travel there by Aon?
  23. Shouldn’t to Hyundai Elantra’s name be changed to the Hyundai Elantris
