Quick Fix 69: Dark One: Too Light In a red-brown field of dust in the Blackened Lands of Mirandus kneels a solitary drull. For most of my lifetime, I was smitten by its dominance. I cheered when the Dark One rose, and I gladly joined his forces! “I was part of a scouting party. As the main army fought on the Warfields of Karkun, we were sent to sneak into Sheildreach. When we reached the bank of the Quiet River, we lay down to rest. “I awoke underwater, held down by a gauntleted fist. Through the swarm of bubbles, I looked up. I locked eyes with the Destined One! And he was beautiful. “I tried to destroy him, but I was too weak. He tried to destroy me. But he was too weak. “He told me I reminded him of someone special. A pair of tears fell from his too-blue eyes. Then a rush of air refilled my lungs as his hand released me from the water. And something awoke within me. “The others lay strewn along the riverbank with smiles on their faces, yet I did not envy their deaths. I walked alone back to the Draeken Forge, stepping over an entire generation of corpses. This story takes place well before the events of the Dark One comic, in the quiet, liminal years between two chapters of the Narrative. You are drull, eagerly awaiting the next great war. Perhaps this time you will die a glorious death! But your small community has been beset by rumors that some of you don’t want to fight. You must root the scourge of pacifism from your group before it corrupts any more minds. Basics Each Day and Night are combined into one 24-hour-long Cycle. Every Cycle, there is an execution, which is decided by a vote. The minimum number of votes somebody can be exed by is 1. Tiebreaker rules will be announced in the Cycle One writeup. Every Cycle, one of the Enlightened Drull can submit an order to kill one player. If you don't post for two cycles in a row, you will be removed from the game and, if one is available, replaced by a pinch hitter. If none are available, you die. PMs are not open. Votes are submitted using RED TEXT. Please do not overuse red text or similar colors. Once a vote has been submitted, it can not be revoked for the rest of the cycle. EXCEPT, once per game, players may submit an order in their GM PM to either i) secretly remove their vote or ii) secretly double their vote. The vote tally will reflect the change, but the names will not. This can be done in addition to submitting a kill order. All actions occur simultaneously. Alignments Sensible Drull: You win when all the Enlightened Drull are eliminated. Enlightened Drull: You have a shared doc in which to conspire. Your win condition will be announced in the Cycle One writeup. It will involve outnumbering or reaching parity with the Sensible Drull. Bonus Activity: Word Sneak Over the centuries, a handful of travellers have moved between the realms. As you were stalking one once, you heard them say a funny-sounding phrase. As an inside joke, like to slip it into your conversations. Players will be assigned a short phrase at the start of the game. Any players who use their phrase three times in-thread (in either roleplay or out-of-character speech) before the end of the game, without it being guessed by other players, wins a (meaningless) prize! Players may guess other players' phrases in their GM PMs. Once they get one wrong, they may not guess again. Guesses may be slightly more than correct, but they can not contain omissions. Spoilers for Dark One: Forgotten ahead! If you have not listened to Brandon Sanderson’s latest audiobook collab with Dan Wells, I highly recommend you listen to it. It’s a great 6 hour journey that I’m sure you’ll love. with that out of the way, let’s begin. So Dark One: Forgotten takes place a bit before the original, with a story exploring Malmahan’s misdeeds. Additionally, it gives context to the brief mention of a podcast being used as evidence for Malhaman’s murders. However, this doesn’t seem to be the same murder case. In Forgotten, there are 42 strictly LA-based murders done by Malmahan, with Malmahan himself saying that there were many, many more. In the comic, however, there are 15 strictly New York-based murders, with Malmahan claiming that he committed 13 additional murders. To go further, Forgotten is set in 2022, whereas Dark One seems to be set in 2020. Given that Forgotten is meant to act as a prequel, that doesn’t add up. So either Forgotten is non-canon, which seems unlikely, it is an intentional discontinuity in-world, which I also doubt, or Dark One’s canon will be rewritten with the writing of the Dark One novel. Personally I’m betting on the last one, but I have know confirmation. Has Brandon Sanderson said anything about this?

I can't find a place to ask this so just decided to make another question. Sanderson said this about Dark One, and I am wondering what exactly he meant by it. Is he just saying it got too dark for a YA Novel and he decided to move it away from Cosmere as well. Or is he trying to say it got too dark for Cosmere? Which I highly doubt considering the themes and subject matter of Cosmere books. Like, Drug Addiction, Rape, Slavery, Child Abuse, Depression, among others. I know this is a small question and shouldn't need a whole forum thing, its just weighing on my mind. I am just very confused as it seems to be saying the latter, but the latter makes little sense to me. The former makes a lot more sense, but it doesn't seem to be saying that due to how it is worded. Reading through Dark One, it isn't more twisted or older than Cosmere novels. So he likely just meant the former, just two largely unrelated decisions.

The Dark One graphic novel by Vault Comics came out on ebook on the 26th. This story is not a cosmere story, so there hasn't been too much hype in the fandom on this one. Perhaps you're waiting for the hardcover (which comes out in August). Maybe you've been burned by the White Sand graphic novels, which could never reach their full potential because the story wasn’t written for a visual format to begin with. Even then, I wouldn't say a cosmere fan has to read White Sand. It's mediocre at best. So, on that level, I can see anyone being apprehensive about another graphic novel. Let's cut to the chase: is Dark One worth getting? Yes. I wholeheartedly recommend it, and I'm almost surprised to say so! I always have a personal issue getting into new stories, even if it's from an author I love. There's just a big inertia for me against reading new stuff. You have to get invested in new characters and a new setting. It's easy for me to put a book down. I'm not sure I would have picked up Dark One rapidly unless it was for this site, if I'm being honest. Maybe you have the same problem on getting into something new, or maybe you're worried about another Brandon graphic novel that isn't great. But everyone: Dark One is definitely worth your money. The art is excellent and the story has interesting twists and turns with the hallmarks you'd expect from Brandon, like clever worldbuilding and plot. It's a quick read, even though it's 200 pages long, and now that I'm done, I'm very invested in this universe and I can't wait to see what's next. Dark One is tailor-made for the graphic novel medium, unlike White Sand which started as a prose novel, and you can see how much of a difference it makes. Characters are introduced briskly with their motivations established immediately, so you're never confused as to why anyone is doing something. The art has a lot of color and diversity, communicating in a panel or two far more than pages of dialogue or thoughts in prose could. There is worldbuilding in the art, if you're paying attention. It's put together in a wonderful, clever way that I think really shows what graphic novels can do. The world has some standard fantasy tropes, a Dark One rising and a Destined One fated to meet them, but there's this undercurrent of the Narrative which drives the machinations. Some characters chaff at the Narrative and its designs, and some work against it, even though its said to be futile. It's pretty cool, and it harkens back to Brandon playing with those ideas of prophecy and the foretold hero back in Mistborn Era 1, which I always thought was fun and there are so many ways those fantasy tropes can be used. You'd be surprised at how much depth in the worldbuilding there is, with single lines holding a lot of implications for the past and the future. If you didn't know, Dark One is a portal fantasy story, where our main character, Paul, comes from Earth and he's transported to a fantastical world (Mirandus), where he becomes the prophesied Dark One. This isn't a premise that gets me too excited on paper, but in application it is executed wonderfully well here. Both Earth and Mirandus matter, and their connections are part of the intrigue. Really, all of the story just feels smooth in a way that I didn't expect. The plot moves exceptionally quickly. I think part of this is that it is a graphic novel, where we don't need to spend time on establishing shots because we can simply do a two-page spread on a new locale and call it good. I love tightly plotted stories, so this worked great for me. The ending is quite a Sanderson avalanche, and it might feel too quick to some, but I enjoyed it a lot. There are two twists in particular that I found extremely clever and I absolutely loved it. I'm a guy who loves my sweet endings, and I am a very happy camper with Dark One. Now, you need to know that this is the first book in a series of graphic novels (I believe three of them). This graphic novel does have a satisfying conclusion, but I also need the next things in the series immediately. I wouldn't say this is a "standalone" per se. Still, I think you'll be satisfied with this first one, but I sure hope we can get more of these quickly. I do not want to have to wait twelve months for each installment. That's about it. It's tough for me to get into new stories, but Dark One hooked me very effectively and I am now super invested in this universe. When Dark One was announced, it was said to be a multimedia project with a graphic novel, TV show, podcast, and novels. We already got hints of audio originals for Dark One, and I couldn't be happier. More please! One last thing: if you're trying to get friends or family into Brandon books, but the long novels are a harder sell, this might be a great place for them to start. Thoughts from Others at 17th Shard: Argent I finally feel like I understand the difference between a comic book and a graphic novel. [Dark One definitely felt like a novel to me, key scenes were given room to breathe, and the characters and the world alike had depth to them. Probably my favorite thing about the entire graphic novel is how real most of the characters feel - like real people, with real motivations, and no easy “good” or “evil” label being applicable to them. But the art is also really neat, and the visual language is strong and consistent, and… I guess the rest is spoilers. But I would absolutely recommend this! FelCandy Dark One was a highly anticipated graphic novel for me because I saw the potential for a visual accompaniment to Brandon Sanderson's writing. Because the story was written for the medium, I feel like the worldbuilding and character development was enhanced by the artwork rather than just illustrated. The artists' use of color and dramatic framing really immersed me into the world of Mirandus and the minds of the characters. The story is truly epic in scale, and even though it is in a less wordy format, fans of Sanderson's prose will not find the story lacking in lore and depth. Last weekend we got so excited about Dark One that we recorded two Shardcasts on it. The more we discussed, the more we realized how much depth was there. Our first one will be out Friday! User u/DataLoreHD did some sleuthing and discovered a few very interesting entries on Recorded Books, Inc., with some release dates. Firstly, The Original--the audio original story written with Mary Robinette Kowal--would be released September 14th 2020, and narrated by Julia Whelan. Then, interestingly, there's a Stephen Leeds story, in the Legion series! It's Stephen Leeds: Death & Faxes, to be released September 1st, 2021. Lastly, there are two Dark One things as well. One is Dark One: Prophetic Histories coming February 9th, 2021, and the other is Dark One: Forgotten, releasing May 5th, 2021. So this is clearly from the publisher of these audiobooks and are marked as "RB Exclusive". Brandon did recently say The Original would be out around August so I believe the September release date for that, but we've been burned by White Sand release dates before, so I'm not sure about those other dates. But, Brandon did comment in the thread about this, and said the Stephen Leeds: Death & Faxes is an official title. He wanted to get a Stephen Leeds show made but had difficulty with it, so this audiobook series would be like a pilot to a "television show", except it's a book. He'd be overseeing the project like a show runner but not necessarily writing the individual episodes. Brandon didn't comment on the Dark One things yet, but I suppose that seems like they'd be audio originals as well, to go with the multimedia nature of Dark One? On the recent livestream, Brandon said the Dark One stream which will be available to those who preorder it is apparently sometime this week (we don't know the day yet), so maybe we can learn more there. Mistborn Screenplay Changes In the last livestream, Brandon discussed the Mistborn screenplay he's working on (look about 37 minutes in). He said that Ham would now be a woman, which he's mentioned before as being a regret in Era 1. A new fact, though, is that Dockson would also be changed to a woman. Then he was thinking Mistborn would be a film, Well of Ascension would be a TV show where we can get more detail on the crew, and then Hero of Ages would be another film. Then, today, Brandon commented on a few more changes to Mistborn in its screenplay: I'm not sure who would really make two films with a TV show in between. That seems pretty optimistic. Brandon also commented that this Mistborn film would really be a sort of alternate version of the cosmere. I think that, at least, is a good decision. Adaptations will not be the same as the books, and I think they should definitely be tailored for the medium. There are of course good and bad ways to do it, but I like that Brandon is working on this screenplay. Of course, it's important to remember this is all hypothetical and no one is attached to actually make these films. Thanks @DataLoreHD and @Use the Falchion for their research which we used for this article. June 23 Updates It's been only a day and Brandon has revealed some additional details about all of this! First, a big change to how the magic works. In the Mistborn movie atium will be usable by all Allomancers, not just Mistborn and Seers! It's something Brandon says he wishes he'd done from the start. As he (and we) has gotten further in the cosmere, using a god metal - something both powerful and rare - just in the context of Mistborn "has felt off" to him. This likely means that we'll start seeing god metals be used around the cosmere in the (distant) future; in fact, Brandon says that atium (and its alloys) would be good at resisting Shardblades - though that's not a confirmation that we'll see it used there. This change allows him to tie some movie story arcs nicely. House Venture can now better serve its dual purpose of safeguarding the atium and controlling Luthadel, because its Allomancers can use the atium as a last resort during a rebellion. This gives Ham an additional reason to join the House guard - so she can keep an eye on Shan Elariel Venture, learn where the atium is, and steal it. Go read Brandon's post, it explains this far better than this short summary can. And, in other news, we now know a little more about those Dark One audio productions. The TV show is still happening, and the graphic novel is (obviously) also still happening. But in addition to those, Brandon is producing a couple of audio dramas. Prophetic Histories is an audio novelization of his DO outline, and Forgotten is "this wacky idea I had for a "Serial" style podcast, with a journalist tracking a killer, which ties into all of this." -
As Brandon said on a recent livestream, the Dark One graphic novel is done, and now its preorders are open! It's also coming really soon. The ebook is out June 26th, and the hardcovers begin shipping August 17th! It costs $29.99 for the hardcover +eBook and $19.99 for the ebook alone. The book is 224 pages long and you can already read the first 29 on the preorder page, near the bottom! It looks pretty sweet, and I think I like it quite a bit better than the White Sand graphic novels. There are a bunch of preorder goodies for ordering now. Today, Vault Comics have announced the first Dark One graphic novel set to be released in 2020. Jackson Lanzing, one of the writers, also tweeted that the manuscript was 209 pages, and they started work on it eight months ago. He said next year, "you can finally join us in Mirandus," presumably the world of the story, and said "Down with the Narrative. All hail the Dark One." For those of you who may have forgotten, Dark One is set to become a multimedia project involving a television series, graphic novels, a book series and a podcast. This is the story of a young man who discovers he is fated to become a tyrant and destroy a world of magic. You may also remember this as the story where the ground carries an electrical charge. This graphic novel will be published by Vault Comics, as opposed to Dynamite Entertainment who published the White Sand series, and co-written by Jackson Lanzing and Colin Kelly with art by Nathan Gooden. So there are actually multiple magic systems apparent in WoT. I'm going to list them, and if anyone want to add, I guess that's what the comments are for. A. Saidin - the male half of the source. B. Saidar - the female half of the source. I think they're two distinct things. I can't really explain why, but they're like the good yin-yang sort of thing. C. Tel-aran-rhiod - world of dreams. This is also the wolf realm. It's possible that Randland is just a really strong dream shard or whatever they are called in the world of dreams. I think this is possible because in the novels they mention a few times alternate dimensions, and other people fighting the last battle. Also I suspect that the Aelfin and their pair may exist in an alternate realm here. D. The Pattern - this sort of drives time and people. It's a really important thing. E. The Creator and the Dark One. - Ok, this is going to get tricky. My theory is that it was actually a pantheon, with multiple dieties. Perhaps the dark one killed off his peers, or they still exist and just aren't interacting with the world. As for the creator, maybe he's just a good diety, perhaps it's an Eru-Valar situation, perhaps the creator is equivalent to Zeus or Chronos to use Greek mythology examples. F. I'm sure I missed stuff. Tell me if I missed anything, and what do you think of my theory of the Dark One.

So this is more of a question for the future, but when the Dark One podcast and tv show come out (I'm guessing around fall 2020), will Shardcast have weekly podcasts for this in addition to their other ones? Or will there be a separate podcast panel for this universe and Shardcast handles the overall series/season reviews? Just curious, but I also guess we'll have to wait for more information about the show too!

Hot off the heels of yesterday's monumental announcement about Brandon's multimedia plans for Dark One, Publisher's Weekly has revealed more information about the graphic novel slice of the pie. The graphic novel will consist of two volumes, the first of which is due out in Spring 2019, less than a year away! The also revealed the creative team that will be co-writing it with Brandon, Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly. On a personal note, I found this news incredibly exciting as Lanzing and Kelly have worked on some of my favorite comic series in recent years. Yesterday I felt cautiously optimistic, today I am full steam ahead on the hype train, because I know these guys can write a good story. The two of them plus Brandon? Now that is going to be something awesome. They also revealed what seems to be the cover art which looks pretty storming cool: Jackson Lanzing, on his twitter, has also confirmed that the artist for the project is Nathan Gooden, and posted line art for part of the cover: -
Deadline has announced some pretty exciting news today about a story Brandon has been wanting to write for years, Dark One. This story, which has slipped in and out of the Cosmere over the years, is about a young man who instead being the hero prophesied to save the world, is the one destined to destroy it. The last we had heard about it was in last year's State of the Sanderson: Well it seems that that interest bore fruit as in their announcement Deadline reveals that not only is there a television series and graphic novel in the works, but there is also a multi-volume book series and a podcast are as well. The tv series is being developed by FreemantleMedia North America with Random House Studio and the graphic novel will be published by Vault Comics. Where the tv series and graphic novel appear to be planned to tell the same story, the book series will expand on it while focusing on secondary characters and the podcast will explore the events leading up to the tv series. Here is the pitch given by Deadline: I for one am always excited to hear about new Brandon projects on the horizon. I know that Brandon's previous foray into graphic novels has been met with mixed opinions, but I'm happy to see that hasn't given up on the medium. Ultimately I'm very interested to see how this story will play out over four different media! Brandon has tried a much more limited version of this before, with Legion (the original plan was for him to write the novellas to tie into a tv series). This however is much more ambitious, but Brandon is also a much bigger deal. There are no dates for anything yet, but I think the future is promising. -
So this is theory is just completely out there and a wild guess without much evidence to go on. Basically I theorize that "What If Obrodai is the planet where Dark One takes place?". We don't know much about Dark One other than that it's cosmere and the main character is destined to destroy the world. Based on the evidence from the second letter Obrodai is a shardworld or at least has a splinter of a shard/shardic presence. Due to its correlation with a shard that makes it a candidate for future books and stories and I really don't have anymore evidence than that. It's mostly just intuition honestly, not really a true theory. Well let me know what you think, and if you have any counter arguments or other ideas to add.

The Letters in Oathbringer have sparked a lot of discussion, namely on their authors. The general consensus is that the first is by Endownment, the third by Harmony, and either Autonomy or Ambition as the author of the second. This theory is not about that, though. This theory is about Obrodai. We know that Obrodai is a world, claimed by the author of the Second Letter. We know Hoid has been there, and has been instructed not to return. Most importantly, we know that a new avatar of the author is manifesting there, who's being taught to dislike Hoid. Now, why would Brandon include this? Just a bit of fluff to give us a clue about the author? I don't think so. I think Obrodai is a planet we're going to see more of. I think Obrodai is the setting of Dark One. For those that don't know, Dark One is a planned YA cosmere novel Brandon's teased in some State of the Sanderson's over the past few years. From what Brandon said, it's a reverse Hero's Journey, a story about the individual prophesied to destroy the world, rather than save it. Peter confirmed that Dark One is a "modern" cosmere story, like the other modern cosmere stories we've seen. "Modern cosmere" presumably means it's in the same era as Stormlight Archive, Wax and Wayne, and Warbreaker. I could be wrong though, and Peter could mean modern as in the modern Mistborn trilogy. I will be the first to admit, this theory has a lot of problems and not a lot of proof. For example, the main character of Dark One has been described as male, while the new avatar is female. Brandon could have decided to change the main character's gender between writing that State of the Sanderson and writing Oathbringer. Plus, the magic system in Dark One has been described as electricity based, like Nikola Tesla style stuff; that doesn't easily fit what we know of Ambition or Autonomy. Plus, why would an avatar of those Shards be prophesied to destroy the world? The only real proof I have is that we know there's a young avatar of a Shard forming in the cosmere, and we have a story about a young person with a lot of power in the cosmere presumably waiting in the wings. Really, the only justification for this theory is "wouldn't it be neato...?" Cause, I mean, wouldn't it be neato...? EDIT: Wow look what I found! A relevant WoB! Obrodai being the setting of Dark One is a RAFO as of December 1st, partially because Dark One keeps popping in and out of the cosmere, so this theory is probably dead in the water!

This is a rough flow chart of what books Brandon has said he would like to create first. It's quite rough, and is subject to change as new information comes in. This is the order of series to be created according to Brandon during his last State of the Sanderson. Something tells me that some of the books like Nightblood won't be seeing the light of day for at least 7-8 years (mind you, that's compared to about 15 years for the average author, or 20 for Pat Rothfuss). Kind of downheartening. Please note, I WILL be editing this as new information comes in, so hopefully it won't be as bad as it can appear. A few quick notes: A = Alcatraz Series

So, I realize side series/story might not be the best name for this sense they all probably play an important part in some capacity overall even if it's just behind the scenes. But what I mean is that Brandon has never been shy in saying that the "Main Sequence" of the Cosmere constitutes Mistborn, The Stormlight Archive and Dragonsteel. There his Babies, the Big Three, the Headliners, the Golden Trio, the Three Amigos, the Breadwinners, the reason you probably bought the tickets. They alone will consist of up to AT LEAST 26 books between the three. (13 Mist, 10 SA and 3-5 DS) and make up the majority of the Cosmere's overall content. Sense there the most important also, they are the one's we can be most assured to get and the one's who will receive the most attention to overall. So what I'm asking is what are you most looking forward to among the rest, outside the Big Three and why? Who among there smaller cousins are you most excited for? Me personally? Elantris Sequels: I am mostly looking forward to learning more about Wyrn and maybe what happened to Dominion and Devotion. Nightblood: Might be what I'm most excited for overall. Can't wait to see more of Vasher, Vivi and Nightblood and also maybe what happened to separate them. White Sand: Probably what I'm most excited for right now, if only because we know it's coming out relatively soon in either this year or next and it'll be the first new major Shard world opened to us sense we came to Roshar in 2010. Dark One: The concept sounds super interesting as does the world and Brandon's YA so far has been just top notch. The Silence Divine: It's on the lower end of the list but that could easily change when I read it like it did with Emperor's Soul Skyward: I just don't know enough about it to really get excited yet. (Or if it even still exists) Also really curious about the two unnamed one's but that's a long way off. Anyway, What about you guys?
