So, I had this genius thought: Lifeless require a breath to make, right? And the investiture keeps it alive, right? What happens if we put either: Another type of investiture in place of the breath? Sentient investiture (I was thinking unmade) in place of the normal breath? Different Investiture alongside a breath? Divine breath as well as a breath? I think that if other types of investiture could be stuffed into a corpse, it would be very important in the future. Note: these aren't cognitive shadows, nor stapling on a CS to a body, since it's just investiture in a long dead body. Any thoughts?

Ok so I was in an internet rabbit hole trying to learn more about the Cosmere because I am only 13 and my father has a limited amount of money. I now have more questions than I did before and I was wondering if any of you could try to help more than just saying, "ROW". Here we go, Is Wit Adonalsium reborn? Who hold the Dawnshards? Can Adonalsium be reborn? How was Adonalsium splintered? How did Odium splinter other Shards? Did people collect those Shard's, Shards? Were there even shards from Shards? What are God Metals? Are the HonorBlades MADE of Honor? If so then doesn't Odium need to destroy them and their blades to be rid of Honor's restraint? If Dalinar and the Stormfather killed themselves wouldd Honors power over Odium be gone or would Odium be trapped forever? I have other questions but these will do for now. Please help.

As of right now, we know of 15 of the 16 Shards. I have a theory about the last Shard's Intent. We know from WOB that there's a shard that "just wants to survive." There are also WOBs that could contradict my theory for sure. "Survive" sounds like it could be an Intent but we know that it's not. Shardic intents seem to sometimes go to extremes of their areas: "odium" could be considered extreme hatred, "ruin" could be extreme decay/destruction, etc. So what if "survive" is the less-extreme version of this shard? The Shard I propose is Ferocity. When I think of something that just wants to survive, I think of a cornered animal. A cornered animal is ferocious, but not malicious. They'll do anything they possibly can to survive, maybe even escape. But there's no malicious intent. Just a need to survive. An aluminum-foil hat for sure, but what do people think?
-
I just read this WOB, and it got my brain churning. is there a potential for us to be seeing gunslingers with the express intent to shoot peoples invested abilites right out of their soul in combat? we know that being spiked is already seriously damaging to a person, and i just can't stop thinking about how utterly devastating this could be in combat. and if this is the case, i could see it being a pretty efective method against some of our top teir invested type peoples (Higher oath surgebinders, Compounders, Fullborns) while i doubt it would be enough on its own, if combined with other abilities, even if they could heal their soul, I can't imagine it would be immediate. it would certainly make characters on these power scales far more vulnerable. Do yall think this stuff is popping up in era 3? or 4?

I spent the past 18 months of my life reading through all of the Cosmere novels/novellas and binging all Cosmere-related media on YouTube. I comfortably consider myself a shardcore Cosmere enthusiast and I feel prepared to start contributing to the community. Happy to join you all!

Hey every one I was wondering on your thoughts on the matter of when Tress of the Emerald sea takes place in the Cosmere timeline and where did the rocket come from? My thought is that, like sixth of dusk, it has to be pretty late because of the space ship. If I understand correctly Scadrial is the first to reach the space age and is the only one we know of to do so. The only other explanation is that one of the organizations of world hoppers could have invented them before scadrail. What do you guys Think?

First Post, if I didn't tag anything correctly, I apologize. I did try, I think. Anyway, I'm midway through relistening to Oathbringer and heard something that probably doesn't tie into The Lost Metal but figured I'd ask because I couldn't find anything about it via Google search. In Oathbringer, Chapter 107, The First Step: Dalinar is discussing battle strategies with the leaders of the other kingdoms of Roshar and this quote just caught my attention. Is it possible that there is relationship to army that Marasi sees in The Lost Metal? I realize the colors are reversed, and assume that it is intentional, but I just heard it and couldn't ignore it so I have to ask. I have a strong feeling that I know I'm probably grasping at straws, but I've kind of been doing a lot of research lately and itching to post something. Also, how much free range do I have to spit ball random theories? Should I create a new post for each one or can I just pop off in the replies section to this post? Gracias

So, I think most of us have known for a while now that the allomantic metals actually effect all kinds of investiture. we see it constantly in books outside of mistborn. nightbloods sheath is made of aluminum, fabrials use the allomantic metals to get specific effects, and its used in all three of the metalic arts. we also know that Nightblood is actually made of an allomantic metal, although idk if we know which one it is. we also see iron and steel used in ToTES. but there has been one thing that has been bothering me for a long time now. and its silver. silver isn't an allomantic metal. but it effects investiture anyway. it seems to destroy it in some way, or absorb it, or send it back to the spiritual realm??? its awfully similar to aluminum in the way that it is used as a sort of investiture insulation, but it tends to get rid of investiture more, sometimes in an area around it. is it possibly changing the enviroment around it to make investiture more diffucult to remain in the physical realm? would it work the same in other realms? its just bizzare, and I feel like ive missed something important. does anyone know more about silver? do we have WOBs maybe? or just any ideas on what it actually is doing?

If you use Telegram or Whatsapp you might like to send GIFs. Problem: There's not enough Cosmere GIFs. The only GIFs you can find on Telegram in large quantities is Kelsier dabbing in Fortnite. Telegram uses a service called Tenor and Whatsapp uses a service called Giphy to pull their GIFs from. These services will send Gifs to Telegram/Whatsapp based on the keyword relevance and the popularity of the GIFs. I believe that both service do not show Gifs unless they have been viewed a decent amount of times. I'm a Telegram user (Tenor GIFs) but the solution should be analogous to Whatsapp (Giphy). 1. I found about 2 dozen gifs online which I would like to appear on Telegram. 2. I uploaded them to Tenor (Cosmere spoilers) : https://tenor.com/users/inkspren I have tagged all these GIFs with cosmere and mistborn or stormlight plus any other relevant tags. New Problem : The gifs do not show up when searching cosmere/stormlight/mistborn. This is likely because they have not reached a viewership threshold to be pulled from the API. This means that the next step of the plan : 3. Start using the GIFs from the link I provided by just copy pasting the gif's link for now (doesn't matter if you paste it on Telegram, Discord or whatsapp, as long as it's used it is good for the algorithm). Hopefully these GIFs will begin to appear normally in Tenor search results. 4. Repeat this experiment but for Giphy Gifs. If you have any Gifs, feel free to upload them to the services Tenor/Giphy and share them here, I will try to use them to promote their appearance on Telegram and Whatsapp.

I have been working on this for a bit. I would love some constructive criticism. I really think that the top row is a kind of essential background for understanding many references. I started with WoK and the writing was not as great as I read the rest of the Cosmere, which was a bit of a let down (I still like all of the books, but SLA is my favorite series). This is more designed for new readers to try to get them into the Cosmere. Thoughts?

Here is a little fan fict I started. It is a list of characters, who are worldhoppers, that write a newspaper. Here is the character list! Sorry, kinda long. The paper is called Worldhoppers Weekly. The Lone Coinshots Members and Descriptions Velendsier, home planet: old Scadrial : Velendsier is the happy-go-lucky blogger of the group. She has had a great life, and doesn't quite understand people who haven't. She travels to different worlds for her monthly vacations. She gives lists of the best vacation destinations and eateries. She gives out her favorite hacks and recipes for each world. She is very socially interactive and wants to go see everything and everyone possible. Whenever Val sees a problem, she wants to fix it. However, she quickly realizes that you can’t help everyone, but what happens when she needs to make a life-altering decision on whose safety comes first? Kasinar, home planet: Roshar: Kas is your run-of-the-mill, everyday conspiracy theorist. He knows about all of the shards but sees relationships in them that others discredit. He labels governments corrupt, or worlds close to ending, but more often than not his theories prove false. He is the more serious(ok, paranoid) one in the group and is more sensitive when the others jest. He is worried about the end of his world, his life, and the cosmere as a whole. Through his adventures worldhopping he must find hope in the almighty and eternity , but can any change this heretic’s mind? Zarek Malarn, home planet: new Scadrial: Zarek is a former writer for the Elendel Daily newspaper. He was fired for his speaking out strongly towards political issues. Shortly after the Governmental Scandal of Elendel, he was fired for “disrespecting the officials of Elendel”-Editor in chief for Elendel Daily, speaking on Malarn’s harsh words. Soon after Zarek knew that people needed to hear what he had to say, and not just people on new Scadrial. He became a worldhopper and helped found worldhoppers weekly. He is the perfect balance of serious and easy-going. He keeps his newspaper style when writing for Weekly and gets along well with Velendsier and Kasinar. But can he regain the trust and friendship of the people of Elendle?

Disclaimer: I have no idea where to put this, so please benevolent mods, move this if necessary. SPOILER WARNING: Alright so, this theory contains the heaviest spoilers in the world for Stormlight Archive Rhythm of War, Warbreaker, Elantris, Tress of the Emerald Sea, and I might have to borrow from Mistborn Era 2 It also spoilers ALL of Avatar the last airbender and Legend of Korra. The world of Avatar almost perfectly fits into the cosmere, here me out. I'll be using cosmere words like Bond, Connection, Investiture, Spren, Shards, cognitive realm, Intent, and the like, so if you don't know any of those, read the cosmere books before reading on in this theory. I'll to capitalize those words in order to make them stand out. I will call the Avatar-World the Avatar-World in order to avoid confusion. --- Let's get started, first of all, of course there are not really fitting shards left over for this planet, but to put it simply, something similar to Roshar is going on. Spren-like splinters called Spirits inhabit the Cognitive Realm known as the Spirit-world of the planet Avatar-World, and two perpendicularities known as Spirit Portals in the North and South pole of the planet exist. This is a fact that points towards two Shards of Adonalsium having been shattered on that world. The Spirit World, Spirits, and the Perpendicularities Judging from the original humans having been in the Cognitive Realm first, they might've migrated over from another planet, before having been changed by Cosmereological Intent (see Pure Lakers on Roshar) to let the ever present but Mist-like (see Scadrial) invisible form of Investiture known as Chi, flow through their bodies. The Spren/spirits/splinters of those Shards known as the lion turtles could thus grant the humans a special form of Bond to allow them to use the power of an element. In the Avatar-World there must be two new types of Bonds: one that lion turtles use to grant the ability to use investiture to control and element, and one bond that Spirits use to possess a human. Bending and Investiture - an End-Positive System Forming a Connection to the power of the Splintered shards (see what happened on Sel), this Bond is not very similar to the Nahel Bond (Roshar & Spren) and a Luhel Bond (Lumar), but instead only requires an initial bond that unlcoks the power in a human and can then be passed on genetically. Investiture in the Avater-World in the physical realm is an invisible gas, or at least humans have evolved to not see it, and is ever-present, seeping into the humans where it is called Chi. The unlocking of bending and chi-gates might form cracks in the soul that are passed on genetically, seemingly even the more powerful Splinters or rather Cognitive Shadows can hold such powers, as evident by Raava and Vaatu. Bending itself is a way of Accessing Investiture, requiring intent and specific physical movements that look almost like a martial art. This is similar to Aons drawn by Elantrians using AonDor or the martial arts on Sel. The Avatar Both bonds were used by Raava and Wan to create the first avatar: A cognitive shadow that holds memories of all prior avatars, held together within a human body by the Spirit Raava. Whenever an Avatar dies, the memories are added to the cognitive shadow known as the Avatar, and the spirit Raava carries it on to a newborn human from another nation to use the possession Bond with. Similar to a Bondsmith, the Avatar can create and sever connection, such as completely taking someone's ability to bend, or temporarily elsecalling into the Spirit World (Cognitive Realm). Chi-Blocking Chi-blocking blocks spiritual pathways for the Soul which investiture would need to take. Healing Healing works well in the Avatar-World since due to the physical movements through which investiture is accessed, the humans of the Avatar-World have developed a stronger image of self and their cultures, even associating them directly with how they can use investiture. Savantism Savantism in bending might require something more than just a lot of investiture and using their power, but these are known as specialized bending types. --- Tell me what you think. Did I make any mistakes? Any way you can fix my mistakes and still make it fit?

Should there be a "Suggested Prerequisites" or "References" list for each Cosmere book? Two thoughts led me to this: 1) The latest books seem have more and more tie-ins to other Cosmere worlds and magics. More and more, one needs to have read some previous books in order to understand all the references. I'm guessing this trend will only increase as the entire Cosmere is woven into one large saga. 2) I was thinking of recommending the books to a friend of mine, but realized I wasn't sure what I should recommend that they read first. Elantris, Warbreaker, and the start of the first Mistborn trilogy seem like good starting points (unless there are references that I missed - which is quite likely). I think it might be beneficial to new readers to have a list of "before you read that, you might want to read this". It can be just "suggested" because it's still possible to enjoy the main story without getting all the references. "References" might be better name for it - i.e. "This book references these other books". That would be able to handle the cases where two books take place at the same time and reference each other, as in the latest Cytoverse books. How a new reader accesses the list of references without being exposed to spoilers will be another challenge.

Hey All! Long time lurker, first time poster, so I apologize if the formatting isn't quite right. There will be plenty of spoilers regarding the later Stormlight books and the Dawnshard novella, so please tread lightly if you haven't read those yet. After my most recent reread of RoW I noticed how much discussion there is on Hoid’s flute and it got me thinking that it must be more significant than just a simple musical instrument. Perhaps the flute is actually the Dawnshard that Hoid has had since the shattering? Before people jump down my throat, I am aware of the theorized connection between Hoid’s Dawnshard and the First Gem. However, as we saw in the Dawnshard novella, the receptacle of the Dawnshard can obviously change from items to people. So I went back and started tracing where we have previously seen or head mention of the flute. We know that Hoid has had the flute for an extremely long time when he tells Kaladin that he has carried it longer than Kaladin would believe. The way Hoid explains the flute always seemed odd to me To me, Kaladin’s confusion about this is reasonable. He probably hasn’t seen many people play the flute while simultaneously storytelling. What bugs me about the wording is that Hoid claims he “uses” it instead of simply saying that he plays it. A little later in the passage Brandon describes Kaladin’s reaction to the music The emphasis on demanding here is what catches my attention. Sure, people describe music as demanding occasionally, but perhaps there is a bit more here. After Hoid finishes the story he gives Kaladin the flute and tells him that Which I will admit, on its own, doesn’t seem all that consequential at first glance. But when I start thinking about the little that is known of Dawnshards that passage starts to take on a different meaning. We know from the Dawnshard novella that to properly use a Dawnshard, it requires both Intent and Command. So perhaps “mastering” the flute in this context Hoid is hinting to Kaladin being able to use the Dawnshard. Further, we also know that holding Dawnshards for a long-time changes people (from Oathbringer epilogue) which has obviously happened to Hoid due to his inability to hurt others. Now Kaladin loses the flute relatively quickly after receiving it from Hoid, so he wouldn’t have developed those same effects, but maybe his time with the flute in his possession did have an effect. Kaladin is only one of two known surgebinders who was able to remain awake during the occupation in RoW. I know there are completely logical explanations made in the book as to why he was able to remain conscious, but I think it is possible that this explanation is incomplete and that Kaladin’s time with a Dawnshard in his possession assisted in his consciousness. As I mentioned, there was only one other surgebinder who remained awake, Lyft, who we find out at the end of the book has had the flute in her possession from some time after the move from the Shattered Plains! We all know that Hoid rarely appears or takes action that aren’t absolutely necessary to meet his own goals (whatever they may be). He tells Dalinar himself near the end of WoR that So maybe Hoid felt it was time to pass on the Flute (which I suspect to be the Dawnshard) because he felt Kaladin and eventually Lyft would have greater need of it in the near future.

Ok, this is kind of a crazy theory of mine, without much evidence currently, but here we go. We all know that both aluminum and silver have strange effects. Aluminum is able to negate any form of investiture, and silver is able to do something similar. I believe that silvers actual abilities tie more to the crossing between the three realms. (On threnody where the cognitive shades are held back by silver, in tress where the spores are unable to draw power from the spiritual realm when near silver, etc.) So while aluminum blocks investature, silver functions as a barrier between realms. Aluminum has one other ability though, It can be burned by mistborns/mistings. And now we get the the point. Every shard has a god metal, so I wonder if adonalsium THEMSELVES had a god metal. We know that the metals can still be around after a vessels death, we see this in TLM when both ruin and preservations metals are once again created. So, I believe that silver is adonalsium's god metal. This is a lot of guesses and extrapolation, but think about it. If adonalsium truly is, like, GOD, then it makes sense that they would have created the three realms, and as the sole deity, they would have been spread over the entire cosmere, maybe spreading and diluting their god metal. Its abilities are not tied to all the other metals, including aluminum, as it cannot be burned and has no attachment to any other from of investature, only the fabric of the realms themselves. Now back to Aluminum. It is suggested throughout many books that Hoid was with the 16 when Adonalsium was killed, to the point where this is just a fact. If Hoid helped to kill Adonalsium, then gave up his share of the power, like I believe, then there is another god metal. I think hoid dispersed the actual "17th shard" over the cosmere, and the 17th god metal was similairly dispersed, which is ALUMINUM. sorry if i was rambling, I am excited to see your guys' ideas

I noticed this quote on my third read of TWoK and found it of some note. This sort of touches on the fourth wall which is something that basically never happens in cosmere works-but it seems to happen here. It technically could be something else, and I'd love to hear opinions. What does this mean...? Oh, also this which has a small chance of being a fourth wall break as well (But easily could actually mean what it means when taken at face value.) Hoid just seems like the type of person to sneak in a double meaning of that sort. I don't usually suspect this kind of quote, but this in particular feels like something.
-
So obviously this is like 80% speculation, but hey that's what makes it fun right? We generally assume that reforming Adonalsium is possible, partly because its been mentioned by Hoid, who is by far the most reliable source of information (at least when he gives it) on the past and the deepest workings of the cosmere. However, even Hoid seems uncertain as to the possibility, as shown in his conversation with Daliner. Personally I think he have yet to see any convincing evidence that the possibility exists. Starting with the most obvious, Sazed is the only example of a combination of the 16 original shards held by one person that we have seen, and I think its fair to say that as an experiment in combining the shards, he has been less than successful. Not only is he incapable of really taking action, but he is actively struggling to hold the two together. I have to assume that no successfully recreated version of Ado would include the vessel working that hard to keep the whole together, and if it did it sounds profoundly dangerous. However, even putting those things aside, describing Harmony as a combination of the two shards of Preservation and Ruin at all is generous. We (and everyone else) have always understood Harmony as two distinct shards that happen to be held by the same vessel. The same is true of Ettemetal, which is immensely unstable and, despite god metals acting like elements, can be split into Atium and Lerasium as if it was an alloy. I actually have made a post before about whether this is a state inherent in holding 2 shards or not, here: Also to consider, is the ongoing question of whether there was a vessel for Adonalsium or whether it was literally just sentient magic goop. If it would need a vessel to recombine Ado then I think there is a significant question of who could serve. Its a question for another thread, but long story short, single shards need people with specific traits that align with the shards to be effective bearers, and the requirements seem to have been even more demanding for Sazed taking up 2 shards. So, would Adonalsium have requirments that are just so absurd that only the perfect person could ever hope to do it, or would the intent of all sixteen shards be a wash and just any old guy could pick up the divine power of all creation? Alternativly, if Adonalsium does not need a vessel then that opens up a whole other can of worms. Vasher says something along the lines of "if you leave magic alone for long enough it becomes sentient" (I dont have the book on hand sorry for the vague quote) in RoW while talking with Kaladin. So, I assume the theory would be that you just kinda drop all 16 shards in one place and wait, but that also leaves a lot of problems. The Dominion and Devotion shards on Sel were dropped after odium did what he does, and now they are kinda just chilling in the cognitive realm, apparently making it super dangerous to go there. This raises the question of whether you need to leave the 16 shards alone in a specific way to get adonalsium and not just an apocalypse, or maybe D&D are somehow unable to merge together as Ado would, but either way surely they should have become sentient by now, something we have had no indication of. Also, some of the shards have intent which is directly opposed to reforming Adonalsium, which surely would be an obstacle. Most importantly, Autonomy is deeply opposed to mixing with other shards. I have to assume it is still possible to mix autonomy with other shards but it also must be much more difficult, similar to how Bavadium is repelled by Ettemetal. Would the presence of all the pieces of Adonalsium make a difference there? Odium also does not want to be mixed, but if im honest I have always been unclear on how much of that was Odium and how much of that was Rayse. Finally, the way that Adonalsium was shattered probably matters. If it was just that enough force was applied to separate the shards (however the heck that would even be possible) that sure, but I cant imagine it was that simple, and it seems more likely that it involved a fundamental changing of the way that investiture exists to acomplish Long story short, it seems like one of two things needs to be true for Adonalsium to even be a possibility on the table. 1) The boring answer, that simply the fact that all 16 shards are there and not some combination of a few changes the way they interact with each other, simply bypassing all these problems, or 2) The way in which we understand both how shards combine together, and how investiture acts when it is left alone are deeply flawed. As a final note, at the end of the day I do think Adonalsium being reformed is possible, after all it would kinda be narativly unsatisfying if it was just "sorry about the years of speculation yall, it was never even an option," I just don't see how its possible given our current information

I was wondering if there was the possibility of more Cosmere-aware groups made up of people from different worlds like the Ghostbloods and the Seventeenth Shard that haven't appeared in Canon yet but will? Like a Cosmere interplanetary smuggling group or Cosmere nomads? What role do you imagine they could play in the overall story of the Cosmere?
