  4. Aaand here is the second part of my Cosmere tattoo journey!! The Bridge Four tattoo that everyone gets in the book after they are freed from Sadeas and becomes Dalinar Kholin's and the Kholin's bodyguards and eventually storming awesome Radiants!! Here's hoping, I'll become one, if I believe hard enough!! Hey, hey Kaladin! Hit me up! I'd be an excellent Bridge Four candidate!! Looking forward to hearing from you, Kaladin Storm leased and you too, Syl!!
  5. We know that awakeners effect the colours in the world around them. The more breath, the more of an effect. However, we know Vasher is an awakener yet the colour around him whenever we see him in Roshar seems unchanged. Is this because the effect on colours is only observed on Nalthis? Or is Vasher doing something else here? Thanks in advance for your input.
  6. Can someone who knows what they're talking about give me a summary of Hoid's story that we know so far? I've read Mistborn Eras 1&2, Stormlight, Elantris, Edgedancer, Mistborn: Secret History, The Hope of Elantris, and The Eleventh Metal. I plan to read the rest of Ars Arcanum, the Rithmatist and Warbreaker in the next few weeks. I just want to be able to participate in more Hoid discussions. I'm still fairly new to all this stuff and getting an answer from someone will be faster than searching out all the answers on here.
  7. Let's pretend Middle-Earth/Arda resides in the cosmere. How would it all fit in with Brandon's word? Just a silly little idea. List any connections you can think of! I'll get the ball rolling. Hoid = Tom Bombadil Perpendicularity = Mount Doom Splinter = The One Ring (Which also allows travel into the Cognitive Realm) Cognitive Shadow = Ringwraith Servants of Shard (like a Kandra or Spren): Istari (wizards) Sliver: Maiar (Balrog, Sauron, Valar, Wizards) Shard: Eru Illuvatar?
  8. Just a short little opinion on shapeshiting within the cosmere, and the most powerful form of it we’ve seen (from least to most): Siah Aimians- shapeshifting is limited to adding pigment to the skin, as far as we know. Decendents Of Returned- Siri and Viv, have the ability to change hair color, as well as mildly modify their features, such as Viv adding scars and folds to her eyes. Dakor Monks- Easily forgotten about, but they have shown the ability to change facial features and body composition. This is what begins to separate the shapeshifters in my opinion. The ability to change the mass of your person as you shapeshift. Kandra- Now I know it is stated that Kandra cannot change their mass while shapeshifting, but given Ten Soon’s ability to “eat” a dog, horse, and a human. We are going to assume that is not quite true. Dysian Aimians- In truth this spot is interchangeable with kandra imo. We do not know enough about these cremlingbodied fellows to tell for sure the limit of their abilities, but they can flawlessly replicate a human body and features and can presumably replicate anyone’s faster than a kandra can and without killing them. Returned/Heralds/Cognitive Shadows- This is where we start getting into the least understood and arguably most powerful, and versatile forms of shapeshifting. Due to their nature as cognitive entities, Returned can change their features and body composition simply by thought. It is extreme enough to allow Vasher to take a significant amount of his mass away as he is in his human disguise. Heralds either highjack a body of a human and change it to match their features, or form a body out of pure investiture, which is pushing the boundaries of what I call shapeshifting but is an important magical ability. Kelsier also may posses similar abilities to the heralds. Dragons- Now the shapeshifting abilities of dragons are teetering on the edge of cannon, that said within dragonsteel prime they have shown extreme mass reduction from a full size dragon form to human. Whether this is the limit of their abilities is something I would love to discuss in the replies. I hope everyone enjoyed a refresher list of shapeshifting in the cosmere, if I missed anything, or you disagree with my list let me know!
  9. I swear this was intended to be just a random portrait but several friends told me it reminds them of Shallan so I roll with itP.S I know she is supposed to have blue eyes
  10. Thousands of years before any of Brandon's published works a being known as Adonalsium was shattered into 16 distinct entities. My understanding is the Shards are manifestations of various abstract concepts. We know of 11(?) so far. So what potential Shards would you like to see? I'd personally love to see how Perception and Divinity would work in the cosmere.
  11. This may be an arbitrary or foolish question, but it has clung to my mind like a cremling to a body: Could you use soul stamps to change investiture to make someone "remember" themselves as being a Feruchemist (or other magic-user)? Of course, you would likely need to experience being a Feruchemist yourself (or alternatively record every aspect of being a Feruchemist/Allomancer/Surgebinder/etc) to craft such a stamp. Is there a canon answer for my question? If so, please tell me what it is! I am always eager to learn more about the Cosmere.
  12. I just finished transcribing Brandon's short story, "The Traveler". It's basically a conversation between Hoid and Frost upon his return home (Yolen, probably?) after the events of the first Mistborn Trilogy. There's not really anything really revelatory, Cosmere-wise, but it's still a fun read. It's also a first draft, so Hoid is constantly pointing his finger, but it's nice having something completely new to read. Have a read! One section that stood out to me was Hoid's passing thought. Which do you think Hoid lost? Is it a person, place, or thing? Where is this place that he's thinking of going to, and why does he want to go? It has something to do with dead people, perhaps? Nalthis, where people can Return? Threnody, with shades?
  13. Title . I bet this ends something similar to the The Last Question by Isaac Asimov(not necessarily the same but similar a sort of reset). What are yours ? ( it could be the Reformation of adonalsium or whatever) (Let's find out who made the right call when it finally comes)
  14. To be blunt, this isn't a theory, or if it is, it's about as well constructed as a house made out of sand. Anyway, due to a recent WoB and discussion on discord, I've decided that to really investigate some issues surrounding the creation of the Bands of Mourning, I needed to post a topic (which Calderis is probably going to attack, hi Cal!). source At first glance, this WoB doesn't seem that problematic (and in fact, it doesn't seem to relate to this topic at all). Yes, it basically means that despite holding the power of Preservation and having three hundred plus years to figure it out, Kelsier hasn't actually figured out how to get off-world. Ironic. Such a smart idiot (I think someone might be a bit too "well-connected", if you catch my drift). Anyways, this presents some issues with Kelsier creating the Bands in Era 1.5 (Early Elendel History). Logistics Yes, the usual theory is that he just created new spikes (or Marsh) and used old Inquisitor spikes. However, there's a few...well many problems with this train of thought. In the Cataclysm, the Inquisitors killed all the Full Feruchemist. Second, no new Full Feruchemists were born in Era 1.5 due to the lack of Full Feruchemists and that the few Terrispeople intermarried with regular Scadrians, leading to the creation of Ferrings. This, of course, means that logically, there are not enough Ferring children to make new spikes with, plus, despite that Kelsier is a psychopath, he seems adverse to killing children (even noble children, as seen in SH), thus, it seems unlikely that he would create spikes from young Feruchemists... This is important because, while there are indeed Inquisitors containing Feruchemic powers, these would not, and cannot, contain those powers that were unknown to the Inquisitors in Era 1. Marsh would not know of them either. While you could "supplement" this lack, I suppose, with spikes made from young Ferrings, I think that Kelsier is very unlikely to do this (and I think that Brandon would find this idea too dark, anyways). Thus, we land on the conundrum, to make the Bands, Kelsier probably did not only use spikes, thus a different method was most likely used... It therefore is likely that beyond the eyespike, few spikes were used in the creation of the Bands, thus, I believe that other Solutions (or something) Originally, my theory boiled down to the idea, that, well just because there are no Full Feruchemist on Scadrial (beside Sazed...technically), does not mean there are no Full Feruchemists in the cosmere. Thus, if Kelsier worldhopped, he could have found one of these Full Feruchemists and "helped" them make the Bands. There is more to the solution (like how to construct the Bands with two different people and stuff), but this isn't that theory (which might still be possible, but that's irrelevant). Because of the new WoB though, this seems like an unlikely solution, unless a an off-world Full Feruchemist came to him. So, since this option is no longer viable (and that theory is died a sad, sad death)...I offer four alternatives, based on the idea that Kelsier was involved with this process (according to this WoB). This means that Rashek did not make them, because he's dead and gone, literally. I do not support any of these options completely, instead, they are merely "ideas" that might work to explain how the Bands were created (without actually describing the process because that's a whole-topic-and a-half). 1. Kelsier consumed Harmonium, somehow, despite its tendency to react when it touches liquid due to its Spiritual makeup and gained the power of Full Feruchemy. Obviously, there are some issues with this idea, however, Brandon has said that it does something, but RAFO-ed what it did exactly (WoB). And thus, one solution is that Kelsier has burned Harmonium and gained the ability to use Feruchemy, thereby letting him make the Bands all by himself. I don't really like this idea, because being "involved" sounds like he helped. This could, though, just be Brandon being vague, of course... 2. Kelsier made himself a Full Feruchemist while he was holding the power of Preservation. Yes, this seems...insane, but there is precedent for this idea. When Rashek grabbed the power in the Well, he made himself into an overpowered Mistborn. He did not eat Lerasium like we originally thought (WoB). Furthermore, Feruchemy comes from Preservation, and is a give that Preservation apparently gave the Terrispeople (WoB). This one is thus possible, but just seems uncool and boring, but because Kelsier is an unreliable narrator and loves to keep secrets (WoB), it can still work, I think. I would just be kind of sad of sad if it's the correct answer... 3. Sazed helped Kelsier construct the Bands. While Sazed did not help Kelsier get a new body (there is a WoB somewhere, I think, but I can't find it, I'll provide it later), there is nothing saying that he wasn't involved in the creation of the Bands, however. This would help solve the problem of "why didn't Sazed help the Southerners" to some extent because by helping to make the Bands (or even, providing Kelsier with the tools, somehow, to make them). Even if his solution of "I can't mess with this direction without messing things up worse, thus, I'll send Kelsier to help instead" wasn't a very good one. This one could work, but one wonders why Sazed didn't just make the Bands himself in this case... Thus, it seems implausible. 4. The Bands were made later on, after the creation of the medallions. I haven't too much to say here, other than that this is what @Calderis supports. I don't believe it's correct, but I would rather Cal provide a few more details on this theory first, than trying to refute it here and now. Anyway, other solutions are welcome, of course. This topic is mainly for discussion, however, please don't suggest that Kelsier is using Spook's body. That, guys, has already been disproven. (WoB)
  15. My question: How did the desolations end? We know that they happened again and again whenever the heralds cracked under torture, allowing the returned to flow back to Roshar. But how did they get the genie back into the bottle? Here are my thoughts on possible ways they ended: 1. The desolation ended whenever one of the heralds died. Jasnah seems to believe this theory, since she proposed that they should seek out the heralds and bump them off to prevent/end the desolation. However, if this is the case, why didn't the heralds just kill each other or commit suicide, rather than subject the very people they swore to protect with the oathpact to genocide? Also, if the heralds dying ended a desolation, then the returned would have no desire to kill them. Odiums forces might try to just incapacitate and not kill them, but I image that would have been difficult, given their honor blades. 2. The desolations ended when all of the returned had been destroyed before they could inhabit another singer body. This could explain why the only desolation we have a lot of details about (the most recent one where the heralds abandoned the oathpact) ended with a huge battle. Fight to kill all of the returned and then the heralds would go back to prevent them from showing up again. However, if this is the case, why wouldn't odium just tell one returned to go hide in some cave somewhere and avoid detection? 3. There was a time limit to the desolations. Perhaps Odium and his forces had a specific time period in which they had to accomplish some kind of goal before they were forced back. That would explain why they might end with a huge battle, if they would be trying to push to accomplish their goals. But then we know that one desolation lasted 11 years, so unless they time constraint changes every desolation, I doubt they would have made that distinction about 11 years if there was a time constraint. Does anyone have any idea about how these came to an end, or know of a WoB about them?
  16. I was reading Way of kings and Warbreaker at the same time and I noticed that the glyph 'Shash' is used in both. I thought it was odd that they had different meanings, and it made me wonder if the languages had been shared at one point in time, then separated. It could also be a coincidence, but I doubt that. Thoughts?
  17. Edit: I don't if this has been asked before as I'm new. What's your favourite system and which would you like to be in possession of? My favourite would have to be Feruchemy. Being able to store energy or thoughts in metal sounds perfect for my life style!
  18. Ok, so this post will discuss Oathbringer, Mistborn, shards, and other things in general. I think this is the right place. I don't want to do anything wrong by omitting any spoilers, so please be patient. I am still figuring things out on this site. I can't get this out of my head, so you my fellow Seventeenth Sharders will have to listen to this verbal vomit. ;p Anyways on to the meat of this topic here. As I am rereading Stormlight and the rest of cosmere stories in general, I have noticed as I am sure many others have as well that Odium is in fact the biggest threat to the Cosmere at large. So how to get rid of this threat? Odium needs to be splintered really good. I don't think that he should be restored and than combined with another shard. It would only be feasible if you combined all of the shards into one again, which I don't know if it is possible. I guess we might have a better idea how two opposing shards combined into one react in the next Mistborn series and we get inside Sazed's head. Is he still Harmony? Have the shards started to conflict with each other? This I feel is important, we need to know this. So how to deal with Odium. I feel there are some key players, Hoid, Kelsier, Jasnah, Shallan, Dalinar, the Ghostbloods, and perhaps the Ire. Hoid needs someone to help him, as I have a sneaking suspicion that is Hoid's quest, stop Odium. He probably has many more secret plots and quests of his own, but I feel this is the main one. We see this in the letter he writes to presumably Frost. So who would Hoid get help from, as the Seventeenth Shard holds a policy of non-intervention, they are virtually useless unless they change their policies. They would be the ideal candidates as they have a wealth of cosmere knowledge at their fingertips. So, I believe that Hoid has to rely on the Rosharans, namely the newly refounded Knights Radiants. After all, Odium is stuck in the Rosharan system for now. Hoid had mentioned Adonalsium briefly to Dalinar and he didn't understand what that meant. However, that doesn't mean he won't further investigate what that is. This is unlikely, but possible. So Jasnah or Shallan, if any were a candidate for Silverlight University, I feel it would be one or both of them. We don't know what Jasnah knows, she has a Herald now, so if she asks the right questions, she may find vital information not only about the Oathpact, but maybe what a shard is and how to splinter it. She also traveled with Hoid for a while after everyone thought that Jasnah was dead, who knows what they talked about. Again, with the right questions... Shallan has basically become a Ghostblood at this point. We know there are world hoppers in the organization, so at some point she is bound to come across important cosmere information as well. I read a post on here about Kelsier being the leader of the Ghostbloods and I can't get it out of my head. We know that Kelsier met with Khriss and Nazh so he certainly knows more now that he has been 'alive' for a very long time. He also witnessed the almost destruction of the shard Preservation. He also held the shard Preservation for a time to give it to Vin, so he was bound to gain even more cosmic awareness while Ascended. He also witnessed the merging of the shards Ruin and Preservation as well. And he 'retrieved' that device from the Ire (what other devices do the Ire have?). Now I'm not saying that just because Kelsier saw all of this, he immediately understood how to destroy a shard or 'heal' it, but he has seen firsthand which is more than most people can say. So, going off the premise that Kelsier is the leader of the Ghostbloods, this whole stop Odium thing is right up his alley. He has a Radiant, Shallan, to help and Shallan has access to other Radiants, i.e. Kaladin, Dalinar, etc. If anyone can destroy a god, it's Kelsier. The Fused are definitely a threat, but if you somehow found a way to kill them tomorrow, you would still have Odium, who is absolutely at this point filled with divine hatred. It has consumed the shard and its vessel, Rayse. So, the Parshendi, who are rightfully angry at the humans, and the humans need to team up, unite against Odium. So in conclusion, I feel that Odium is the biggest threat to the Cosmere at large, I could totally see him trying to turn the Cosmere at large into a dystopian future where everything an everyone looks bleak. We need people from all cosmere worlds to come together and help the Rosharans in this Final Desolation and splinter Odium, destroy Rayse's body once and for all. Only then can the Cosmere be relatively safe.
  19. Forgive me if this has been brought up before but I hadn’t encountered it in the forums and it seemed pretty interesting. In a March 10, 2017 WoB, Brandon specifically refers to Adonalsium using the possessive pronoun “his”. The full quote (in response to a question from B-more_freshout reads “The death of Adonalsium, and the questions surrounding the persistence of his power, is THE single pervasive theme of the works”. I was under the impression that we were currently uncertain whether Adonalsium was a being/force/whatever. This quote, however, seems to suggest that Adonalsium was a specifically male being. Please let me know if you have any thoughts/corrections/points I should’ve considered. Thank you!
  20. Hi Sanderfans/Sharders, I will be posting a series of "scrolls" about Moshe Feder, Brandon's Tor editor, on my blog. Moshe was the person who "discovered" Brandon and acquired Brandon's sixth novel Elantris in 2003. In 2005, Elantris became Brandon's first published novel. Moshe has kindly agreed to be interviewed for this series. Here is the first "scroll" in case any of you are interested to check it out: http://shazarose.blogspot.com/2018/08/moshe-man-behind-copper-mind-scroll-1.html This is the first scroll in what is expected to be a multi-short scroll series on Moshe. A future planned "scroll" will document half of Brandon's twin inspiration for including characters like Kaladin, Shallan and Dalinar, who all suffer from various mental health issues, in his Stormlight Archive series. Moshe himself is one half of this inspiration, and I will be documenting Moshe's bout of bipolar that he wants to share in order to help raise awareness about mental health issues. When I asked him if it would be a painful thing for him to share, he had this to say: "Not painful to share. It’s a duty to help fellow sufferers and to work on reducing stigma. When I was Corflu (fanzine fan con) GoH, it was a major part of my speech." Hope you do enjoy the series if you decide to check it out! Warmest Regards Sharon Hooper
  21. It is stated that in end-negative systems, hemalurgy being the prime example, investiture is lost during the process. However, it is also said that investiture can not be created or destroyed, so what happens to it? Does it return to the shards?
  22. Hey everyone, so I am new (obviously) and love this forum so far! So I picked up my first cosmere-related book (not Sanderson book, but cosmere-related book) on January 1st this year-and loved it so much I finished the whole cosmere by August 21st (unless you count white sand- haven't gotten ahold of that yet). Anyway, I have a burning question and I was wondering if any of you know the answer or want to share your opinions- Does everyone in the Cosmere have breath? I get that they aren't all drabs but do they all have a breath, like from when they are born? Or is it just people from Nalthis (Nalthinians?)? I mean Hoid got some extra but Hoid is Hoid and besides I figured anyone could get more... Anyway would really appreciate any reply to this (And heads up, I really like parentheses as you can tell). Suppose I should also introduce myself- I'm a dude who lives in Japan although I am American and admittedly haven't read much fantasy outside of Sanderson (Do like Fablehave and Eragon tho, although I am still working on Eragon so no spoilers). TLDR; Hi. Who has breath.
