  1. Good Day My name is Daniean and I live in Jamaica. I've read on the forum for years but I've never posted, I think it about time I stepped out of the shadows. Like many, I got introduced to Brandon Sanderson about ten years ago when I heard he was finishing The Wheel of Time. I took up Mistborn and read it and it was immediately my favorite book since The Great Hunt. I absolutely loved it. After that, I tried to get my hands on anything Sanderson wrote. When I heard he was planning an opus long series I was the happiest person on Jamrock. So far it has felt like Brandon interviewed me then wrote Stormlight to be the perfect book series for my taste. No interview does not cut it. the man must have read my mind because the stormlight Archive scratches itches that I didn't even know i have. Any way you can get a sent a sense of my taste by the books I've read. 1 The Lord of the Rings The Hobbit 2 by J.R.R. Tolkien The Fellowship of the Ring 3 The Two Towers 4 The Return of the King 5 Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone 6 by J.K. 2. Hoid is arguably the most powerful non-Shardic being in the Cosmere. He was on Sel and almost became an Elantrian. He was on Roshar and stole a bead of Lerasium, making him one of the most powerful Mistborn ever. He may have access to unkeyed metal minds. He now has knowledge of Hemalurgy, but will most likely not make use of this power do to its more gruesome qualities. He was on Taldain where he got a jar of sand and the expertise to use it. He was on Roshar where he is now bonding a cryptic. He was on Nalthis where he bought enough breaths to get him to at least the 5th heightening, maybe more. He is from Yolen where he has access to a kind of Lightweaving native to that planet. He was at the shattering of Adonalsium, where he became functionally immortal. To recap, he is the 5th heightening, a full Mistborn, has access to 3 forms of Lightweaving, owns some unkeyed metal minds, can use Hemalurgy, is functionally immortal. Am I missing anything?
  3. From the album: Other Cosmere Art

Characters: Nazh (Threnody) Spook (Scadrial / Mistborn Era 1) Renarin (Roshar / Stormlight Archive) Hrathen (Sel / Elantris) Siri (Nalthis / Warbreaker) Steris (Scadrial / Mistborn Era 2) Among all the suggested characters, Spook gets the most votes. Good for him!
  4. Hello everyone. New to Cosmere here. I don't know how this place works, and I have little knowledge about Cosmere and all the jargons Sanderson fans are spouting. Si, please be kind hehe. My friend converted me from general fantasy to Sanderson fantasy. Any recommendations? How do I do things properly in my TBR and in this forum? Any help is appreciated. Thank you guys!
  5. Brandon Sanderson is the most prolific fantasy author of our time. He has published over 30 titles since 2005. Many of these books exist in a shared universe known as the Cosmere. In this guide to Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere we take an in-depth look at how the universe operates, and why it is integral to readers of Sanderson’s work. How Did Brandon Sanderson Get Here? Sanderson published his first novel Elantris in 2005, followed by his Mistborn trilogy (published from 2006-2008). But it was the Wheel of Time series that made him a household name among fans in the epic fantasy genre. Sanderson stepped in to complete the 14-book series after author Robert Jordan died in 2007. Working with Jordan’s editor (and widow) Harriet McDougal, Sanderson finished the series based off Jordan’s outlines, notes, and previously written text. The critical success of these final Wheel of Time novels (The Gathering Storm, Towers of Midnight, and A Memory of Light) gave Sanderson both the clout and the experience to start his own epic fantasy. His planned 10-book series – The Stormlight Archive – might be the first place readers learn about the Cosmere. But what exactly is the Cosmere? And why is it important for Sanderson fans to understand? Let’s explore the mythology that the books have given us thus far in this guide to Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere A Guide to Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere The Cosmere is a shared universe where the majority of Sanderson’s novels take place. (This is not dissimilar to the work of Stephen King, who tied all of his novels into the universe of The Dark Tower.) But when I say universe, we aren’t simply talking about a shared setting or characters. Every series takes place on a different planet on various solar systems within the same galaxy. There are numerous planets and unique worlds in the Cosmere. But the 10 primary planets, known as Shardworlds where the major events play out. A cataclysmic event shaped the Shardworlds in the history of Sanderson’s universe. In the beginning, there was God called Adonalsium – a being of immense power. At some point, a group of mysterious individuals decided to get together to murder this god and claim its power for themselves. Adonalsium shattered into Shards that represent different aspects of its power. Among these aspects were traits like Honor, Cultivation, Ambition, Devotion, Dominion, Ruin, Preservation, Endowment, Autonomy, and others still unnamed. The individuals who shattered Adonalsium then absorbed these powers, and each of them became the Vessel of a Shard. These Shards eventually ended up on the planets of the Cosmere. The power of the Shards shaped the world around each them, investing each planet with specific magical properties. This process – called Investiture – explains why each Shardworld has its own unique magical system, despite the shared universe they exist within.
  6. I have a simple proposal for how the Heralds can be A. born on Ashyn (except maybe Ash), B. Were elevated to heralds during the first Desolation to combat the fused who came in the first desolation, and C. Were not supernaturally old and didn't have extended lifespans... Why do we assume the humans came to Ashyn all at once? Why can't they have come in waves over tens or hundreds of years? We assume Ashyn was destroyed suddenly, but it can't have been too sudden as there was enough time to evacuate a large amount of people to Shinovar on Roshar and to create the floating cities of Ashyn that harbored cities worth of Ashynites. What if there were early refugees who left at the beginning of some war to move to Roshar, then the war gets worse and more people move and Shinovar starts to get full, the first humans go over the mountains, the war begins to destroy the planet with vast, destructive powers being unleashed on whatever the sides were and the planet is basically destroyed. During this period the Shin-Ahsynites start to kill Singers and the Singers fight back. The angriest of the Singers are offered great power and revenge by Odium in return for their obedience (Odium is playing both sides). Jesrien, King of one of the floating cities that is failing brings his people in a migration to Roshar and enters into a raging war with the fused giving the Singers a terrible advantage. Honor offers Jesrien and nine of his people the chance to oppose the fused and bring humanity over to Honor instead of Odium. This doesn't have a lot of evidence, but it solves the strange timeline issues around the first desolation and the migration of the Radiants.
  7. So I visited https://cosmere.es/, and they have a really cool wallpaper that shows five Shardworlds. The middle one is Roshar with it's easily recognizable supercontinent, the left one is probably Scadrial during the Final Empire as it's basically a hellscape but I can't figure out the rest of them. I'm barely a beginner in Spanish, so I can't quite navigate their site either (& not getting great connection in the monsoon season so the auto-translation isn't working well, & I'm slow at tech) If they do answer the question somewhere on the site itself could someone link me to that please?
  8. We've talked about the best and worst moments of this here Cosmere, but where are the little gems? The polestones in the rough? For instance, in Oathbringer there's Guff, "The Guy Who Can't Cuss": Or, in Mistborn, there's all of Tindwyl's lessons on rulership; they form a beautiful thesis on leadership and kings that is seldom discussed here! So, what other little things has Brandon written that people should discuss more?
  9. Hey all! Back again with another world of my mind. This time, it's from a dream induced by quarantine and riots! Fun. The tl;dr for my dream is that it took place on a semi-futuristic planet inside a city that had a government and police force that was prejudiced against people with Powers, the common term for the supernatural abilities. I know, I know, incredibly imaginative. But it somewhat ties into the magic system itself. Powers originate (typically) from the Shard of Pragmatism. Pragmatism has a Vessel, is not Splintered, and isn't bound to the planet like Odium is to Braize. In fact, he's probably what we would call one of the Good Guys when it comes to Shards. No special modifiers, he's very much in a similar state to Cultivation, shardically. Attached to this post will be a chart I made detailing the known Powers and what they're like, categorized into 10 different sets. Internal/External, and Physical/Mental/Temporal/Spiritual. Very similar to Allomancy, yes. But you might have already done the math and realized "wait, that's only 8 sets, where's the other 2?" Well, the last 2 sets are the Internal/External sets of the Void Segment of the chart. Void powers originate from the second Shard of the world, Vengeance. Vengeance was Splintered by Odium in a struggle not unlike his battle with Ambition, but with Pragmatism stepping in to drive Odium off just after the Splintering of Vengeance. Vengeance's splinters settled onto the world (which, I still need a good name for, suggestions for that are welcome) and Pragmatism decided to oversee the Splinters to make sure they wouldn't wreak havoc on the planet's CR and PR. Thankfully, they remained mostly dormant, and time passed with Odium moving on and getting locked on Braize some time after the battle. Unlike Allomancy, these Powers do not require a physical key in the form of Metal. Instead, each person with a Power can only use so much Investiture per day. This is a result of Pragmatism's Intent. He only allows a certain "budget" of Investiture per person per day, and using it pragmatically is key to getting the most out of your Power. It's a bit like if a Surgebinder could draw on a certain amount of Stormlight per day without needing filled gems to breathe in from. However, the Splinters of Vengeance are not as dormant as once thought. Under the oppression and genocide of Powered humans by non-powered law enforcement and government, the Splinters of Vengeance are stirring, drawn towards Void Powered people with an intense desire to exact, well, Vengeance upon those that wronged them or their loved ones. When this desire, this Intent you could say, reaches a critical point, a Splinter can bond to the Void Powered individual, granting them an Ascended Form. Ascended Forms are not full, Shardic Ascension like Sazed to Harmony. Instead, these forms are like mini-Avatar ascensions. A large reservoir of Investiture to be sure, but nowhere near as massive as a full Shard. However, a key difference now is that the Ascended Void user can draw on their reservoir with much less restriction. It's not artificially gated like Pragmatism's Investiture supply. This empowers the Ascended Void user to enact their vengeance upon the world, whatever it may be. And for many, this would be the extent of their power. But for some, there is yet more to achieve. By remaining pragmatic despite their limits being relaxed, an Ascended Void user can earn a Splinter of Pragmatism, much like a Divine Breath from Endowment, doubling their capacity for power usage. This only takes place after proving their responsibility with an expanded Investiture pool, and the Intent of Pragmatism inside the Splinter will reinforce that slightly, much like how a whole shard warps the mindset of whoever the Vessel is. This way, Pragmatism can be reasonably certain that the Ascended Void user will remain responsible with their power. Often, when he grants this Splinter, he will tell the recipient of the greater Cosmere, and the battle between Odium and Vengeance, telling them of how dangerous and destructive Odium is, and entrusting them with the task of Worldhopping off of the planet to find some way of making sure Odium stays a non-issue for as long as possible. Some will take on this task, seeing how it's so important to not only this world, but many others, and some will decide what's more important is getting things sorted out on this world before tackling that much bigger issue. So few people have truly Ascended in this manner and Worldhopped that they're effectively unknown in the greater Cosmere, electing to stay hidden and plan things out in secret, pulling the strings from behind the scenes to orchestrate a true defeat of Odium. An interesting other parallel to Mistborn is that what's happening with these Double Ascensions is that this is basically a slow-burn version of the mixture of Ruin and Preservation into Harmony. Now it's Pragmatism and Vengeance slowly blending into... Something. What would be a good combined Intent name for these? The second attached picture is a drawing I made of the Void Spark Ascended Form's arm, with Spark Blades manifested above each fingertip. I'll eventually do a full-body drawing of it, but for now, this is all I could get to look reasonable. (plus it was alright practice for hand anatomy. I cheated a little by making the fingers spiky triangles.)
  10. Though I've lurked often on this forum, I have been less than thorough so if the theory below has already been posted… please give me a link (if you'd be so kind) as I'd love to read the discussion! And if this would be better posted elsewhere, please let this newbie know how Also yes, starting off my forum theorizing with a Hoid theory? Clichéd, but I never claimed to be cool. Like many, I often think about Hoid. What does he want? What are his motives? What is his favourite food? All vital cosmere questions. We know Hoid is gathering different kinds of investiture in the cosmere. At first I thought that maybe he wants to achieve a certain level of power to achieve a specific aim. But this has problems: I don't see Hoid using the investiture-equivalent of using an atomic bomb… nor do I know whether he'd have access to all the invested arts he collects if he's off-planet from these shards. So my mind travelled to the beginning, prior to the Shattering. We know Hoid was alive in Yolen pre-shattering and we know he has certain magical powers such as lightweaving in Yolen or his agelessness. If he had this magic prior to the shattering, then it's possible that the magical signature (is this a correct term?) of his power is of Adonalsium. That's to say, the investiture within his spirit web is pure undiluted Adonalsium. So then the shattering happened, and the power got divided. We know that Hoid has certain restrictions/conditions - such as not being able to hurt others, or that he always appears where he's needed (or so he thinks). We don't know how these restrictions came to be, but a reasonable guess would be that they are conditions set by an oath he took. I do believe he mentions an oath of a sort to Shallan. Why would an oath restrict him so if he isn't a shard? This I don't know, but maybe it has to do with his original Adonalsium magic-system. If we consider the idea that the shards, as pieces of Adonalsium, have their rules and magic based on that template then the fact they're bound by oaths could also extrapolate to the original magic users. If Hoid, by the time of the shattering, was already relatively old (a couple of centuries maybe?) then it's possible he was some kind of priest/advanced mage of Adonalsium and therefore had made his oaths as a way to advance in the magical ladder. These oaths cannot be broken. This could also explain why Honour uses oaths: it's an adaptation of the ancient system… and since he really likes oaths then it suited him just fine instead of coming up with something new. This could also explain Honour not being able to foresee the Heralds breaking the oaths: maybe the oaths made to Adonalsium were more binding and impossible to break than those made to Honour. So, what if Hoid isn't happy with these restrictions/conditions of existence? Then he would try to change them. But if the oath took place pre-shattering, then the investiture binding it would be of Adonalsium within his spirit-web. While his innate investiture might be of Adonalsium, he might not have enough juice to make the changes. Therefore, to change his spirit web, he would need to access all the 16 shards magic in order to make the necessary changes. To me, this explains why he's gathering investiture and possibly why he's so concerned about Odium. Maybe it's harder to gather or use the investiture of a splintered shard. The more shards Odium destroys the more difficult it's for Hoid. In fact, I think that given his line to Dalinar about him being ok with seeing Roshar burn to achieve his goals this makes sense. He's selfish in terms of what he hopes to achieve rather than being a good person who's concerned about the well-being of the Cosmere. Now why does he want to change his spirit web? Maybe if not to release him from his oath, there could be any other number of reasons. Maybe, he just wants to die… or maybe he wants to save/bring back someone (as hinted by epigraphs) but to do so he'd have to break his oaths so he's trying to get rid of them. I don't know what his ultimate goal is, but this theory seems to be a plausible way to achieve them. What do you think?
  11. The lovely Drew McCaffrey has interviewed the equally lovely Isaac Stewart, Art Director for Dragonsteel Entertainment, in a Tor.com article on the Art of the Cosmere. And if you've read a Stormlight book recently, you know there's a ton of art in it! In this interview, Drew asks about how Isaac got started with Dragonsteel, his maps, and Nazh. You should really go check it out, because it's very well done. I'm here to talk about a few tidbits at the end that might interest you about some upcoming cosmere things. Here's the quote: So there's a Mistborn Era 2 novella that Isaac would write, along with a Nazh story planned. Drew asked Isaac about other writings: Taldain stuff! Iiiinteresting. Very cool stuff that he's been working on cosmere in his own writing. Go check out the Tor.com article, it's really well done, and we didn't want you to miss it!

Sorry it took me a day! @Bookish Ocelot I also wanted to clarify that if you have a request, it doesn’t have to be a pride flag, it can be that but it can also be just whatever color(s) you like.
  13. Having just finished Aether of Night earlier this morning I'm finally ready for this. Disclaimer: Booknerd is not responsible for your being imprisoned, accidentally imprisoning yourself, or being splintered by the prisoner/ army of food mystics. (If the food Mystics thing happens it's Hoid's fault) It should be noted by the reader that few Shards have every been captured and of the ones we know of(with the possible exception of Adonalsium) all have been accomplished by other Shards, and probably would best be used as a delay tactic than a permanent solution. Now to begin trapping a shard one must make a prison from their own power or Powers in the case of a tag team. One should note that power inequalities become skewed by prisons of this magnitude. Preservation was able to capture Ruin who at the time was more powerful as well as uncanotically in Aether of Night Decay was able to capture two shards at the same time. Warning in creating this prison you give your prisoner a huge advantage over you as can be seen by both Honor and Preservation being killed and Honor splintered by the shards they captured. Part two being inside a prison. Shardaic prisons vary but most tend to be designed to either seperate one's mind from their power, or push back on any attempt to use ones power. No prison is infallible however and all will eventually allow the prisoner some level of control over the outside world e.g. Ruin, Odium, and everyone in Aether of Night. Please note that escaping is incredibly time consuming so make sure you have a lifetime subscription to your favorite streaming service and thousands of rolls of toilet paper.
  14. Feeling annoyed at all the current party candidates? If so then I've got a man for you. Kaladin Stormblessed is a man of the people. He's committed to ensuring a better, happier state for all of us humans. A successful leader Mr. Stormblessed has served as a highprinces honor guard, leader of the Order of Windrunners, and second-in-command in Kohlinar mission. Notable accomplishments include bonding a spren, keeping a slave group alive day after day as they charged arrows for a living, and moving on from a troubled love triangle. Truly a man of our times. Mr. Stormlblessed is going to stop slavery by casting down the corrupt highprinces and turning the dahn system into a climbable ladder instead of greased slide downward. For anyone interested in supporting Kaladin please vote at your local Alethkar elections. Definitely, don't vote Moash in. He's a real screw up
  15. Hello, I've just find this WoB on arcanum, basically saying that we've missed things inside the stormlight pieces of art, especially in the circles of the characters, which are supposed to predict the future of the story. What are you thinking about it, what is hidden just under our eyes? Grant Willis Are there any clues or easter eggs in Roshar/the cosmere that have not been discovered yet? Brandon Sanderson Yeah, but they're not ones that you should be able to discover. They'll just be things that you'll able to look back at. We embed some things here and there in the art, like the lastclap that was in foreshadowed in the margins of one of the art pieces in the first book, with someone catching a Shardblade. For instance, a lot of the little circles for characters at the start of the stories represent things that will happen much later in the series, but most of them are intentionally zoomed in of what the shot would be so that you can't tell right now, because these are not things that you're supposed to be able to figure out. Most things that I intended for you to figure out, you did, and some that I didn't intend you to figure out, you also did. So people can feel very proud of that. Yes, there are a bunch of easter eggs, there are a ton of them, but there is no way you can figure out what they are. YouTube Livestream (Jan. 11, 2020)
  16. Hello All I Recently finished 6th of the dusk which was the last on my list for published cosmere books. I listened to Sando's works mostly with Graphic Audio but generally looked up maps on the net to make sure I'm not missing anything. Finally planned to do more than cremposting and actually try to learn more about cosmere magic systems and conspiracy theories so that's why I'm here. I made a thread here some time ago asking a question but haven't followed up just yet. Here some random cosmere info I think is correct about me: Favorite series: Stormlight Archive Favorite Shard: Devotion Desired Radiants Order: Releasers Desired Twinborn: A Pewter F Gold Favorite emotional manipulation effect: The Thrill which I sometimes get during competitive sports especially volleyball or video games, Though I have tried alcohol and Cannabis so I can sorta tell what being under the effects of emotional manipulation feels like. Resisting the effect is harder than it sounds though not impossible, Most effective way I found to resist is a sudden influx of intense rage/thrill or fear. I can kinda understand Koloss better now. Brandon Sanderson and his writers have really thought about these things... Favorite Character: The Fused, Just like them I also know what it feels like to be stuck in an endless fantasy battle hating your enemy and hostile with your allies, forever fighting yet going nowhere. This is because I play competitive league of legends. Jokes aside I can partly connect with Kaladin, Elend and Shallan in certain ways but The character I best connect with will probably be Lightsong though I'm not as bold as he is.
  17. I have a friend telling me that ultimately the cosmere is an overarching story of how one man (Hoid) goes on to become God by uniting all if the shards. He said it'll be similar to Harmony but on a larger scale. He also said that by collecting different types of investitures, this will ultimately allow him to re unite the shards into 1 vessel, himself. I've not been able to see or find anything to confirm or deny what he is telling me. Any help from you guys would be appreciated!
  18. So, at the end of HoA, Vin Ascends to face Ruin and kills Ati (Ruin's Vessel), dying in the process. Now, when Vin "threw her power" against Ruin they "collided and repelled each other", which resulted in the death of both Vessels. Notably, we know that neither Preservation nor Ruin were Splintered during this process, as Sazed Ascended shortly thereafter. That being said, what (cosmerologically speaking) happened when Vin "threw herself" against Ati? How can you kill a Vessel without Splintering them? Are all Shards opposed in such a way that mere "physical contact" damages their Vessels?
  19. i just found the best cosmere graph that shows all published and future cosmere books, as well as their connections between world and characters. https://paleocrafter.github.io/reading-order/ screenshot of site:
  20. Is there a WoB out there that says that non-Scadrians can burn Lerasium? I know that Hoid was able to burn it, but he could possibly manipulate connection or the something similar (as he attempted to do on Sel) in order to burn it.

    The Cosmere Symbol

A while back I took the Cosmere symbol into Photoshop and changed it a bit from the original black-and-white photo. I think it turned out nice. The 16-sided star looks nice overlapping the silver I think.
  22. Firstly, In way of Kings Hoid asked Dalinar if he's ever heard of Adonalsium. Hoid then mentions that it's gibberish, and that if he was torn to pieces and put back together to give him a gibberish name. Hoid was basically describing a anagram and sure enough, makes Aluminados. And then we have the god metals that get their names from the shard holder. Atium - Ati Lerasium - Leras Harmonium - Harmony( although this should be Sazedium for my theory to be better) Aluminum - Aluminados I wonder if that is the reason why aluminum has such a weird effect on the cosmere, and that would be a convenient True name for Adonalsium pre shattering. just a theory, what do you think?
  23. In the chapter 14 of twok apart of the hoid letter to frost mentions an element I'm curious if we know what hes referring too by the element. I just wrapped up a cosmere reread amd cant think of anything it could be. I thought maybe elohkars cryptic but it seems to be a reference to something from. Back in the day, before stormlight.
  24. This is my first post, so if I got anything wrong, let me know. I’ve been thinking about Harmony, who may be the most powerful being in the Cosmere, since he is two shards. My main question is: could Harmony combine with the rest of the shards to reform Adonalsium? Here is my thinking on the topic so far. The first challenge would be reforming the splintered shards—does anyone know if that’s possible? The second challenge would be getting all the shards into one place at the same time, in their complete forms, and vessel-less. Could one of the current vessels, for example, Sazed, claim the other shards, or would it have to be someone new, flaming all the shards at the same time? The third challenge, and end of my line of reasoning: In his letter to Hoid, Sazed mentions that “the powers I hold are in such conflict that the most simple of actions can be difficult.” -Third Oathbringer Letter. If Harmony has so much trouble reconciling Ruin and Preservation, would any Adonalsium 2.0 be rendered powerless by all 16 shards residing in it? One final thought. Was the shattering of Adonalsium a permanent, Cosmere-altering event? Or was it more like Pangea; simply the last of several occasions when all the continents (shards) were one. Now the continents are separate, but in a few million years or so, scientists tell us they’ll collide to form another supercontinent, which in turn will eventually separate again. Maybe Adonalsium is different every time it recombines, as the shards combine in different ways, with different vessels.
