  1. So, who tried to assassinate Emperor Ashravan? And did successfully assassinate his wife, Kurshina. The strongest contenders, the biggest suspects in-world as per the characters themselves, is the Glory Faction, one of the 80 factions which compete for power in the Rose Empire. The Emperor himself and the five arbiters including Gaotona are from the Heritage Faction. The Glory Faction stood to gain the most from the assassination and seemed to act as though to make the most of his possible death There are two out there options though, that I want to explore: Fjordell Empire or the as of yet unknown third empire on Sel. Both of these entities might, much like on Earth, like for their rival superpower to enter political turmoil. There was even a Shu Dereth priest in the Imperial Seat of the Rose Empire whom Shai encountered. The Derethi priest in red could've been a red herring, I guess but despite what Occam's razor might tell you, the simplest solution isn't always the right one, deviations do occur. It could also be a way to introduce us to the third empire on Sel or to tie them back to previous works set on the same world Historically speaking, it was common for outside powers to ally themselves with inside oppositions and rivals of the government they were trying to destabilize. Sometimes they provided resources to these rivals to topple the government or assassinate the ruler, sometimes they didn't want to rely on a coup d'état and used their own personnel and expected their insider allies to provide them with a way in. Either of these scenarios could fit the bill as well Also, why would Hoid try to have Shai captured, I mean, you could argue that he just wanted to get the Moon Sceptre but to me at least that doesn't seem quite right. He's Hoid, he should've been able to steal it himself or steal it from under the noses of both the Rose Empire & Shai if it came down to it. I'm not trying to vouch for the goodness of his heart but he doesn't seem like the type to do this. In the deleted prologue too, it seemed as though he wanted Shai to Soulforge Ashravan: https://www.brandonsanderson.com/the-emperors-soul-deleted-prologue-imperial-fool/ And it just seems weird for Hoid to meddle in the politics of other worlds for no reason. He is supposed to have access to a form of Fortune which lets him know where/when he needs to be (though not what for). Was something bigger going on behind the scenes of this novella? Why would stability in the Rose Empire be something big enough for Hoid to interfere or was that just two birds with one stone? What do you guys think? Or do we already have confirmation from Brandon?
  2. I am going to start this topic with the most auspicious declaration of: Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god! This is my FAVOURITE Cosmere work! *clears throat* now on with the actual topic. Wan ShaiLu, the Forger is arrested while attempting to steal a painting in the capital of the Rose Empire, where Hoid, disguised as the Fool, ensures her capture (while stealing the Moon Sceptre himself) so as to force her to fulfill the task that would be thrust upon her as a condition for her release. Which raises the question of why Hoid would consider this important enough to require his attention? Would a change of Emperors be so great a political upheaval? But much more interestingly, when Shai does successfully Forge a new soul for the Emperor, what exactly does the Emperor become? Does Ashravan qualify as a Cognitive Shadow? Or is the new Ashravan truly a new Ashravan? (which is kind of terrifying) When the injury rendered Ashravan in a vegetative state, was it more akin to gluing something broken back up together or perhaps more like patchwork stitching? ~Mistborn spoilers~ That is, was Ashravan still alive in a way in the Cognitive? Was his Identity damaged in some way? Did Shai just resurrect him? ~Warbreaker spoilers~ Did she just create a new Spiritweb or repair the original? Had the original Ashravan passed into the Beyond at this point? This WoB indicates that death in the Cosmere is a rather complicated affair: ~Mistborn & Warbreaker spoilers~ Brandon has made comparisons between these three situations before: What exactly is Ashravan now?
  3. I just finished listening to Emperor’s Soul, and I’m a little confused about something. Shai implies that the more ‘plausible’ and ‘correct’ a Forgery is, the longer it will tend to last before having to be restamped. But the ending of the book implies that she managed to recreate the Emperor’s soul so perfectly (other than one or two things that the book implies would have eventually happened anyway) that for all intents and purposes the term ‘forgery’ arguably doesn’t even apply. She didn’t so much create something new and ‘false’ as recreate what was already supposed to be there. Which should seem to suggest that the ‘forgery’ should have been if not permanent then at least lasted a very long time, but for some reason he has to be restamped every morning (at least for a while) or he’ll become a vegetable again. Why exactly is this the case? Why should a perfect recreation of what a person is supposed to be only last a day whereas something trivial like turning a chamber pot into an ornate vase last indefinitely? Is this just a plot hole or did I miss something?
  4. From the album: The Emperor's Soul - Visual Development

Emperor Ashravan's bedchamber. I run with the "phoenix rising toward heaven" theme described in the book (for his bed), and tried to implement it in other parts of the room as well. Or maybe I was just glad for an excuse to draw some of those lovely swirly clouds on the ceiling...! The door in the middle actually leads to the outside, maybe a private garden (which I never got to illustrate though). The actual entrance is located at the front/bottom corner. I also figured that if I were an Empress or Emperor, I'd definitely want some plants in my chambers as well!
