  1. I was at this signing too! And I remember you, haha. I saw the phone recording too -- hopefully we get that audio. During the Q&A, I asked if he could tell us anything more about the "secret project" on his dropbox. He said he can't say anything about it right now because its title and nature are big spoilers. I asked him if that meant it was a cosmere story, and he hedged. He also added that it's just an idea right now, and it may not ever become a published book. And if so, that'd be a long time down the road. So we won't hear anything about that for years, if ever. At the signing itself, I asked a couple more questions. I didn't record but I'll paraphrase here: Me: Prior to the shattering of Adonalsium, were any of the central cosmere worlds inhabited by humans? Brandon: YES. Me: Were *all* of them inhabited by humans? Brandon: NO. Me: On Scadrial, the city Elendel is named for Elend. Is Luthadel also named for a notable historical figure? Brandon: YES. Me: Will we ever meet them, or hear about them or anything? Brandon: You might hear them mentioned at some point (he was pretty noncommital here) and you probably won't ever actually meet them. For the record, both of those "core" questions were in the Google Doc for unanswered questions. I was on my phone and the interface wasn't great, but it didn't look like either had been answered. My bad if they've already been covered. In any case, it was a lot of fun. This was my first time making it out to one of Brandon's signings, even though I've been reading his stuff for years. Will definitely look out for him to come back! [Mistborn Adventures tour? *fingers crossed*]
  2. That's not necessarily true, Weiry. Persistent depressive disorder is by no means guaranteed to be a permanent disease. And it affects different people in different ways. I don't believe there can really be an "accurate" way to describe depression because it's such a broad thing. One thing to note is that clinical depression is generally associated with major depressive episodes, along with related symptoms such as manic/hypomanic episodes, anxiety, stress, etc. Kaladin hasn't really had anything like this, so I'm not sure we actually have enough information to "diagnose" him. Also, for the record, even in a world without anti-depressants, and without a social structure that allows for proper clinical diagnoses for mood disorders, there are ways to treat depression. I'm not saying Kaladin's mood doesn't have some sort of psychological catalyst -- indeed, that is almost surely the case. But he doesn't really fit the bill for classical depression. If he does have it, it seems to be very mild, which means there is actually a fair chance for him to overcome it in time. Of course, the Knights Radiant are supposed to be "broken", so it's definitely possible that Kaladin will remain like this for the whole series. However, I believe that if he fully invests himself in the Windrunner ideals, and if he's able to form meaningful relationships with people like Dalinar, Shallan, and Renarin -- as opposed to the likes of Moash -- that would go a long way toward forming the type of support system that could help him overcome his depression.
  3. Isn't the most prominent/likely current speculation more along the lines of: Surgebinding: Honor + Cultivation Voidbinding: Odium + Cultivation ??? (Fabrials?): ??? (Pure Cultivation?)
  4. I've heard IE is actually decent these days. And Chrome has its own share of issues. If you're on a Mac, Safari is the real way to go. Also, RShara, you could try pasting into a blank plaintext Notepad/TextEdit document. That should get rid of any weird formatting. Then you can just copy the plaintext and paste it in. You could even do the same thing online, via pastebin.
  5. This one intrigued me: Who are likely candidates? And by "already are", does he mean that within the chronology, some of them have worldhopped between the events of their own books and the events of WoR? Or does he mean that we've actually seen a primary character from one of his cosmere books in a different book under a different alias, in a book that's already been published? It also depends on what constitutes a "primary character". Do we count Vasher? Galladon? Hoid? If not, what about characters such as Sazed, Jasnah, Elend, etc. who aren't primary POV characters, but still major players in the events of their stories? Or is it really just the core POV characters such as Raoden, Sarene, Hrathen, Shallan, Kaladin, Dalinar, Vivenna, Siri, Lightsong, Vin, Kelsier, Shai, Wax, Wayne, and the characters from his even shorter stories? I think we can pretty safely assume the core Stormlight characters haven't worldhopped as of the end of WoR. I also doubt that Kelsier and Vin (and Hrathen too I guess) have returned from the spiritual realm, even if it is theoretically possible for them to do so (and, dare I say, rather likely to happen sometime down the line). I don't really know how the Returned fit in with realmatic theory, but for some reason it seems to me that Lightsong's got to be gone for good. So that basically leaves Raoden, Sarene, Siri, and Vivenna as the best candidates from his full-length cosmere books. Throw in the main characters from his novellas and short stories, and it's still a short list. I think Vivenna is a pretty good candidate as a worldhopper from the pool of primary POV characters available. We know she's been learning Awakening from Vasher. We know Vasher can worldhop. So Vivenna is in a position to learn how to do it. I'm thinking that on Nalthis, Breath is required to enter the cognitive realm. We know Vivenna has a lot of Breath....
  6. These really are great. I actually like that they're coming in batches every few days. I'd probably just listen to them all in a row if I had that option.... Not the healthiest way to spend a day.
  7. Me neither. :\ Unless he's talking about the degrees of latitude.... The 30 degree line seems to cross the Purelake. Not sure why that would be significant in any way though.
  8. Is there anything about the physical print of the map? That is, would looking at the map on paper as opposed to on a monitor change the ability to find this easter egg? I only read the last six pages or so of this thread, so perhaps this was already attempted earlier — but has anyone tried looking at the map under a blacklight?
  9. Yeah, and the villain for the second arc is just a bit too ridiculous. I still liked it though. There's some good stuff going on though, and it's interesting to get the little glimpses of the real world between the scenes that take place inside Alfheim. I've been keeping up with Accel World these last couple of days. I think I'm on episode eight or so. Definitely going to stick with it at least until the end of the first arc. Still not sure what will be next on the list though. Thinking either Steins;Gate or Log Horizon. Maybe Hunter x Hunter.... EDIT - I just met a new character in Accel World, who I assume will be the villain for the second arc.... If so, I can see why people don't like it as much. I got over that character within the first episode. :\ Also, did anyone see this announcement? New anime coming in July, directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, with music by Yoko Kanno and characters designed by Kazuto Nakazawa. Premise sounds interesting too.... Something to keep on your radars.
  10. Well, not sure Hoid thinks much of Kaladin now that Kal lost Hoid's trailman's flute.... I could see Hoid getting along with Shallan though. Also Sarene (IIRC he did have a brief chat with her, but I don't remember the details). Also, Hoid did meet Lightsong — he tells Lightsong and Siri that story. I think Lightsong might be too easygoing even for Hoid; apart from his use of his Divine Breath, he pretty much lounges about and cracks jokes for the whole book. Hoid probably appreciates humor, but I'd wager he values motivation even more. Lightsong never really had much of the latter — not until the very end at least.
  11. Aw, Feather, you must have been devastated about how things ended up for Tyn. Not to mention the horse woman never showing up again. And later, finding out that your concerns about Moash were vindicated. *And* this is one of the last times we see Eshonai before she ... changes. Seems like basically all your hopes for the minor characters in these chapters end up dashed, and all your concerns end up vindicated. Probably Brandon's intention all along, but man, these chapters are a bummer to look back at when you think of it in that light.
  12. Have you read anything by Guy Gavriel Kay? Brandon is a fan of his and often recommends him to people who like Brandon's own work. In particular, check out Tigana and The Lions of Al-Rassan. I'll second Brian McClellan's Powder Mage series as well, with Promise of Blood being the first book. McClellan was actually a student of Brandon's I believe. I'll also second The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. The whole series is good, though I think the first book was clearly the best of the three. The fourth book will be out later this year. And another +1 to Zelazny's Amber series. I especially suggest the first five books, the "Corwin cycle" as fans call them. Since you liked Blood Song, be aware that its sequel, Tower Lord, will be released July 1 this year. I thought that was one of the best books of the past decade, so that will be a day one purchase for me. I've heard good things about Brian Stavely's debut, The Emperor's Blades. It just came out this year, and I haven't had a chance to read it. But I see it mentioned a lot in fantasy recommendations threads, often in the same breath as the likes of Blood Song, Stormlight Archive, Kingkiller Chronicle, Gentleman Bastards, etc. You might also like Michael J. Sullivan's Riyria Revelations series. I've only read the first of the three omnibuses (omnibi?), The Crown Tower. I thought it was fun, though a bit light and simple compared to a lot of the other books that have been recommended in this thread. You might also want to look into Glen Cook's Black Company series. It wasn't for me personally, but I feel like it often draws comparisons to Abercrombie's First Law series. Since you liked that, you might like Cook as well. Lastly, you might get some good mileage out of this reddit thread. Just start at the top and work your way down, taking note of any novels and series you haven't yet read.
  13. A lot of people seem to dislike the second arc of SAO but I thought it was fine. I'll keep that in mind though, thanks again. I definitely don't shy away from dark/gritty stuff — in fact, I tend to prefer that style. Definitely feeling good about a lot of the shows on that list. Now just need to figure out some semblance of an order to watch them in.
  14. Thanks, Kurk and Peter. Log Horizon was on my list, but I was thinking about waiting for season 1 to finish and binging it. I'll check out the others; hadn't heard of any of them before. Kurk, how exactly are those two shows different? Would you advise against watching them?
