  1. At this point we should be at least 99% sure that the letter in TWoK is from Hoid to the leader of the 17th Shard (I really don't want to have to call him that every time, from now on he will be Bob) (Note: because I named them Bob I will call Bob a he, even though the gender of Bob has not been revealed). The epigraph in part four is the response to Hoid's letter (perhaps this correspondence will continue in further epigraphs), from Bob. This letter introduces Bob as a character, gives clues to his motivations, and reveals tantalizing details about the cosmere. Bob, in this letter, identifies that he is writing to Hoid: "I am told that in your current incarnation you've taken a name that references what you presume to be one of your virtues." Obviously Wit. We can then see that Bob is not fond of wit (not the name, the attribute) as he likens it to a "stench." The nonintervention that the 17th Shard seeks is because "interference so far has brought nothing but pain." Perhaps there was 17th Shard interference on Sel during Rayse's rampage (ooh good alliteration) that led to much pain and suffering there. For certain, we now know that the 17th Shard interfered before, but it didn't work. And, "Rayse is captive"!!!!!!!!!!!!! (this was news to me) Even though I haven't seen much of Rayse's direct influence on Roshar, we know that "he cannot leave the system he now inhabits." Perhaps Rayse was up to some mischief elsewhere in the system... Some more details: (all spoilers) Rasye wished to become Odium Hoid and Bob made Rayse (and the other Shards?) what they are Please, discuss, point out errors, and hypothesize!
  2. Something I noticed was that the known pairings of Shards weren't consistant with their groupings. Example: Dominion vs. Endowment, difference mental vs. spiritual; as compared to Ruin vs. Preservation, difference pushing vs. pulling. What this would imply would be that each shard has more than one other shards that it is paired to. For me, this is the biggest hole in the theory. If you could modify your theory to explain this discrepancy, that would go a long way in my book.
  3. I kind of like the whole "Odium is division" idea, because it relates to Taln's Scar (in the sky, viewable from Roshar). This red swath of stars could possibly be the result of Odium driving apart the cosmere - physically moving sections of the universe at relativistic speeds, causing them to redshift.
  4. What are lerasium's hemalurgical and feruchemal powers? Note: asked this at a signing, said he had it in his notes but had forgotten.
  5. I like to think that it has something to do with Odium. The odds that there are a WHOLE bunch of stars that are ALL red is pretty much astronomical (no pun intended). Sure, that might happen, but it would be just here and there, not a whole swath of the sky. Perhaps Odium is shaping the cosmere somehow. Two possibilities I see are that he is altering the stars' heat/radiation/fusion, or possibly he is moving a large section of space away from Roshar at an incredibly fast speed (hence the redshifting). Whatever it is, it's really cool and there's at least a 50/50 chance that it is important. Unrelated: in several video games (battlefront II included), whenever I capture a planet it turns red. Idk if that's relevant or not.
  6. Hyperbolas and parabolas are infinite, however. I've never tried to draw something that goes to infinity, but I'm pretty sure you'd run into some problems there. I agree with your theory; it just has little practical value for rithmatists since they can't draw infinite conics.
  7. Think about it. Hoid has black hair too. He also conviniently doesn't seem to age, so what if Brandon is just Hoid, who has finished his quest (whatever it is) and has decided to settle down and write a story in some quiet spot of the universe where there isn't a magic system? PS: In case you can't tell, I'm not serious. I'm not crazy- at least that's what my unicorn says.
  8. The "fourth entity" talk reminds me of Vasher's lecture about BioChromatic entities. I know that's a cosmere work, but I feel the same thing may apply. It could be possible for there to be entities similar in nature to BioChromatic ones (Chalkings, Forgotten, Shadowblaze(s), and possible miscellaneous cirles and lines). Now, back to why I think Joel wasn't chosen. Nalizar says that the wild chalkings don't go near clocks and gears because they deal with time, something hard for them to understand. Nalizar has become familiarized with this concept, and can go near clocks and other gearworks. I believe that the circles and lines work in the same way that time does. To the chalkings, time and mathematics are abstract concepts. However, they can both manifest themselves physically (for time, clocks and gears; for mathematics, geometry, which is used to bind and constrain chalkings). Through this physical manifestation of abstract concepts, chalkings can be controlled. The way this relates to how Joel wasn't chosen is that maybe, the Shadowblaze didn't undestand Joel. Maybe there was something special about him (perhaps his aptitude for mathematics and geometry) that made the Shadowblaze fearful of Joel, and not choose him. So, when Joel tried to touch it, it panicked and ran. Perhaps, in time, the Shadowblaze will become familiar with Joel and make him a Rithmatist (no idea how that's going to happen). Now, if you please, go and find flaws so I can fix my theory.
  9. Things are pushed and pulled relative to you. I'm guessing that if you tried to push or pull, nothing would happen because the metal is inside you and pushing and pulling are external powers.
  10. Point taken. I see what you're saying about external and internal having different qualities.
  11. Slicing bread with a Shardblade. Soulcasting wood into smoke because you like how it smells. Using atium (and duralumin) to see what the questions on your test are. Burning gold to draw a self-portrait. Steelpushing gas pedals/brakes because it's too much work to do it yourself.
  12. Emma Watson for Vin, and Robert Downey Jr. for Kelsier (I know they're both prominent actors, but I can dream, can't I?).
  13. Yes, but gold is more related to atium than it is to cadmium or bendalloy. It doesn't dilate time, like cadmium or bendalloy. Atium, malatium, gold, and electrum all just let you see things. Cadmium and bendalloy just change the rate at which things happen.
  14. I was happy with the metal arrangements at the end of HoA. There were 14 metals, with two more promised. Then, Brandon threw in 4 more (I didn't realize that he meant 2 more elements with 2 alloys, for a total of four). Now the enhancement quadrant is complete, but it leaves gold and electrum paired awkwardly with cadmium and benalloy. I always thought that gold, atium, electrum, and malatium belonged in a quadrant together. So... Refutations? Ideas of what might be paired with cadmium and bendalloy if I'm right? Ideas of what this might mean for the table of metals? Ways of distinguishing between metals that let you see past/future events and metals that change the rate at which time progresses?
  15. You know, Cortana says to Master Chief that she picked him because he was lucky.
