    Shardcast: Endowment

Props to Josh on his great explanation of the endowment in relation to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. That was stated very respectfully and straightforwardly, which I, as a member, appreciate very much. Overall, I would say that a lot of Brandon's work doesn't have direct parallels to his religious beliefs, however there are many things that he builds into it that I think that a lot don't recognize, especially at first. I'm still finding some of these subtle parallels as I continue to read the books (2.5x Mistborn, 3x Stormlight, 2x Elantris, 2x Warbreaker... yeah). Honestly, they are absolutely fascinating.
  2. This is the list I gave a friend: Mistborn: The Final Empire Mistborn: The Well of Ascension Mistborn: The Hero of Ages Arcanum Unbounded: Chapters 22-23; Chapters 26-53 Elantris Arcanum Unbounded: Chapters 20-21; Chapters 2-19 Warbreaker Arcanum Unbounded: Chapters 24-25 Mistborn: Alloy of Law Mistborn: Shadows of Self Mistborn: Bands of Mourning The Stormlight Archive: The Way of Kings The Stormlight Archive: Words of Radiance The Stormlight Archive: Oathbringer Arcanum Unbounded (the rest of it, anyway) *Note: The jury is still out on when to read the "White Sand" graphic novels, as I have yet to read them.
  3. It is in chapter 119. Honestly, my question really comes down to this: What in the Cosmere is Hoid trying to accomplish? Now that I'm actually awake, I don't have as many problems with outright asking my questions and sharing my theories. My theory: Honor's intent with the visions and the phrase "Untie them" is a lot bigger than Roshar. I think that Honor was referring to the Shattering, as he regretted killing Adonalsium. And something somewhat equally big happened with Dalinar. On page 1136, he created a Perpendicularity and said, "I am Unity." As we all know, something's up when Sanderson capitalizes words. On my initial reflection on this and Odium's response, I remembered Odium saying, "I killed you." But I was wrong. On page 1139, Odium specifically uses the plural. "No, we killed you." We, as in the 16 who killed Adonalsium. Perhaps Adonalsium was the name, as Tanavast or Ati, and Unity the "Shard Title" for lack of a better term. And, judging by his letters, it seems that Hoid is trying to get all of the Shards into one place like he's trying to recreate Adonalsium, or Unity. So I guess the question really is whether Hoid intends to hold all of the Shards, or if he has someone else in mind.
  4. I feel that there are some very important things connected to those visions, particularly if you notice some... subtleties on pages 1136 and 1139 of OB. Something big is happening, and I'm wondering whether Hoid would have liked to be in Dalinar's place there. This is such an intense thing that I don't really want to put all of it out there, but also I might be very wrong.
  5. Does anyone else kind of want to see classic literature pieces done with Cosmere characters? Mostly plays, to be completely honest. Like a Cosmere Romeo and Juliet between houses on Scadrial? Can you imagine that? A Christmas Carol? A Tale of Two Cities? How about Greek Mythology? Can you imagine Hoid popping up randomly in Daedalus's labyrinth? Or Harmony as a less-creepy version of the Ghost of Christmas Future? Thinking about it just makes me kind of happy.
  6. Ooooh. This is dang hard. Urm... Kaladin. Elend Venture. Raoden. Renarin. Adolin. If I was actually going to date one of them, though, it would probably be Raoden. He's kind of the sweetest.

  10. There are 10 out of the 16 Shards that we have encountered or at least seen the effects of, but what order did they come in? I have 3 worked out: Honor was 10, Odium 9, and Preservation 16.
  11. Nah, that's in Utah. Sorry.
  12. Oh, wow. I just realized that she always knew far more about who Amaram really was than Dalinar did. Jasnah for the win!
  13. Fly and get around people by walking on the ceiling.
  14. Windrunner! I feel like I answered a few questions not quite right, but I do feel like the description fits me. It describes a lot of the same qualities that make me a Hufflepuff.
  15. I was not expecting that, but it's really funny that you had an answer to that.
  16. When you hear that someone has started reading any Brandon Sanderson book and you think, "Welcome to the Sanderverse."
  17. I'm planning on going, and I'm so excited! I'm going to bring all of my Sanderson books. (But my brother wants me to bring another random book to see if Brandon Sanderson will sign a book he didn't write. Haha!)
  18. That's brilliant, and my wallet would be in danger with the existence of such things.
  19. I just finished Oathbringer, and now I think I'm dying on the inside.
  20. I have two favorite Wit moments so far, both in WoR. The first is in chapter 45, with the story about the blind men contemplating beauty. Personally, I found that to be an amazingly touching story and reference back to it often. The second is in chapter 55, where he is the carriage driver and gets reactions from Kaladin, Adolin, and Shallan. It was simply hysterical.
  21. Interestingly, I know someone who is rather opposite. She loves fandom things, and she is one of the bubbliest, friendliest, most outgoing people I know. The catch is that she's an introvert. She emotionally "recharges" by spending time by herself. It's just something that's kind of interesting to see. Characters are people, and people are more complex than many people like to get into. I just think it's cool to see these character traits that seem like contradictions which actually make for an amazing person/character.
  22. Hi there, I'm new and likely will someday look back at this posts with many regrets, including the one where I wrote this after 1 in the morning. I'm new to the whole forum thing and have never really done this before, so I probably look a little bit ridiculous right now, but I do love Brandon Sanderson's writing, so that's why I'm here. I do have one question: Why do we call it "17th Shard?" I'm really just curious. Thanks all!
