  1. Hold the phone- isn’t the (Dawnshard spoilers) Arclo? The one that Lift ran into in Edgedancer?
  2. Wait wait, hold the phone- El has hemalurgic spikes? What?
  3. As much as I hate his storming guts... You’re right. He’s chillingly efficient. In fact, I think he’s really the ONLY villain besides Taravangian who has dealt any sort of lasting damage to the heroes. Killing Elhokar and Teft, destroying Jezrien, almost breaking Kaladin- he’s very good at what he does. Still, I would argue that Taravangian is at LEAST at or above his level in terms of effective villainy. ESPECIALLY in part 5 of RoW, when he (major spoilers ahead)
  4. This is incredible, I feel like you really accurately captured how Kaladin might react in this situation. Thanks for sharing!
  5. There are key differences, I feel- but the biggest is that, quite frankly, none of the Ghostbloods feel like good people. Kel chose the crew to take down the Final Empire because they were men of quality and character. He chose them because he could trust them, because they wanted to make things better. The Ghostbloods- well, they don’t seem to possess the same characteristics of the crew. However, that being said, almost everything we know about the Ghostbloods comes from Shallan’s side- and Shallan really doesn’t like them. It’s possible that in the greater Cosmere, they’re a lot less ‘evil’. Roshar’s politics are really delicate, and so I imagine it’d be a lot easier to seem a villain there. A good analogy might actually be Hoid. I would be willing to bet on some planets, Hoid is absolutely a hero. On others? Well, the definition of hero gets a little dicier. Might be the same with the Ghostbloods.
  6. Petition to call him ‘Big T’ or ‘Biggie T’
  7. I was super against this theory beforehand. Very, very much so. I didn't feel like Thaidakar and Kelsier had similar enough motivations, methodologies, and ideologies to be the same person. But evidently, I do not know my boi Kelsier as well as I thought I did. As for the WoB that said Kelsier was unlikely to show up in Stormlight, may I point out that, technically, he does not have to appear himself. His influence is enough to affect the story without him being there. And there may be ways for Kelsier to finneagle his way around his Connection to Scadrial (such as the avatar that was mentioned).
  8. I'm okay. This is all good. I'm okay. I'm okay. I'm- Guys I'm not okay. Storms... How is this going to end? Probably not well. Besides the mind-blowing reveals, the book- well, let's just say it was definitely a 'middle book'. And honestly, I was expecting it to read accordingly, so I wasn't overly disappointed. Still, there were some moments where it felt like a chore to read- almost to the level of WoK Shallan chapters- and the pacing was WACK. Still, I was pleasantly surprised at parts. I really, really ended up liking the character of Raboniel. In the end, she was fascinating. Also:
  9. Holy frick I think that Thaidakar might actually be Storms storms storms storms
  10. “You’ve got to use your awesomeness” The strange little Reshi girl standing on the crate in front of Venli said. Venli blinked slowly, attuning confusion. “My- awesomeness? Pardon but what is ‘awesomeness’, young one?” The girl- Lift, as she had called herself- slapped her palm to her head in frustration. “Storms woman, I don’t know why I try with you.” She placed her hands on her hips and tapped her foot frustratedly, scrunching her face as if in deep thought. ”Awesomeness,” the girl finally said “is like the feeling you get when you steal a nice warm Horneater soup- and then eat it. All of it. Shells and all. It makes you feel all fuzzy and excited inside, like a storm- only, not in your stomach but everywhere. In your whole body.” Venli perked up. It sounds as if she’s describing Stormlight. Could it be? ”And” Venli said cautiously, “How does one- obtain this awesomeness, wise one?” A crack resounded as the young girl smacked Venli’s head with a wooden spoon. Venli stumbled away, cursing and massaging the spot the girl had struck her with the cooking implement. What in Damnation was wrong with this strange vagrant of a child? ”Were you even listening!?!?” Lift yelled, gesticulating wildly. “It’s like I said- you’ve got to eat the soup! Storms, you’re almost as bad as the creepy bald guy- the only difference is he had the talking sword to help him out.” Lift gave a long, melodramatic sigh before plopping herself down on the edge of the crate. “Here, let’s start from the beginning...” ————————————————————— Storms... now I really really want this...
  11. Wait- who does Venli need to kidnap, Lift or Navani? Either one has a lot of possibility... hmm...
  12. Holy cow- I don’t think I’ve ever given Navani enough credit, she’s clearly more of a genius than I thought. As a final chapter for part one, this felt very- understated? I suppose? Which is certainly not a bad thing, but it feels like it fits a different pattern than the other SA books. Still, I appreciated that we got some more Coalition politics. Also- Stonewards!!! Oh yeah! This is awesome! And it was really good to hear about the other Radiants as well. It makes me wonder (discussion of spoiler-free reviews under the cut) Other thoughts: -Good to see my boi Sigzil stepping up- though, I feel that Kaladin is going to be sorely missed. -Taravangian terrifies me. At this point, I have NO idea how the coalition is going to deal with him. -I think Sanderson definitely missed a chance to have Lift go with the envoy... if only for the potential humor alone.
  13. And what about that Kelsier interlude? Y’know, the one where he punched Odium? Pure gold.
  14. As the title says- what's the biggest flex in the Cosmere? Re-reading Hero of Ages, I would definitely consider it to be when
  15. I think a good thing to ask might be 'Is there such a thing as 'righteous anger/indignation?' If so: Odium + Honor = Justice Otherwise... Odium + Autonomy = Rebellion (a desire for freedom mixed with an intense hatred of the establishment) Odium + *That one survival shard* = Isolation (Separates from other shards to survive) Odium + Preservation = Captivity/Slavery (hatred-driven status-quo?) Odium + Dominion = This could also be Captivity/Slavery. In fact, Captivity/Slavery would probably fit this one better Odium + Ruin = oh storms I don't even want to consider this one... Maybe Annihilation? Or Genocide? Odium + Cultivation = Corruption (spread of hatred) Odium + Ambition = Competition, Betrayal How about 'Obsession'?
  16. Really? I thought the opposite. On some level, I don’t think Kaladin ever resolved the whole ‘Can I kill to protect?’ issue, and there’s also some underlying beef with his father he has to work out. Plus, he’d hit a wall as a soldier. When you can’t move forward, you may have to move to the side- or even backwards. This experience should open new opportunities for him, even if he doesn’t stay a surgeon.
  17. I loved this so, so much. Snark-to-snark combat, family banter, some progress on Kaladin’s part- it’s phenomenal. Also, Roshar has discovered vaccines?!?! That’s incredible. They’re way more advanced than I thought them to be. I wonder if Taravangian’s herald is responsible for these advances... I also thought it quite poetic that Lirin and Kaladin faced a similar situation- even if Lirin’s issue was more easily resolved. I’m excited to see how their dynamic plays out. Just a few more days!!!
  18. Horses. I’m terrified of horses. Also yeah talking to new people sucks and it’s really awkward sometimes. But horses.
  19. I- had no idea Kelsier was a neurological psychopath. Huh. If that’s the case, then yeah, I totally agree- that’s pretty incredible that he was able to practice empathy and care. As a wise old dragon once said: “What is better- to be born good, or to overcome your evil nature with great effort?”
  20. Definitely Scadrial. As much as the other planets in the Cosmere are storming awesome, I am quite accustomed to indoor plumbing and take-out food. As for magic: definitely either a Brass compounder (I could stay awake INDEFINITELY- how awesome would that be?!) or a Zinc compounder (emotional Allomancy and increased mental speed). Also, depending on which era I live in, I might even be able to visit the other Cosmere planets with relative ease! And if I’m a Zinc compounder in Era IV, I could become the Cosmeric equivalent of a mentat. Human supercomputer space-travel for the win!
  21. Spoilers, obviously. Recently, I’ve been re-reading the Mistborn books (I’m nearly through Well of Ascension now, it’s been a slog). As I read Mistborn: The Final Empire, I was reminded of how much I storming LOVE Kelsier. He’s far from a perfect man, but there seem to be a lot of noble things with his character- his desire to free the skaa, his trust for his crew, his willingness to change his beliefs (even if just a little bit) and save Elend. Yet, every time I see Kelsier mentioned on the 17th Shard, it’s ‘Oh, Kelsier is a megalomaniac with zero regard for his friends and severely hypocritical standards!’or some variation thereof. To a certain degree I can understand these trains of thought- he’s a complex character, with complex goals and motivations. But oftentimes, he’s treated more as a villain than as a hero, and I’m not certain that’s right. So my question for all of you: is Kelsier all that bad? Is he a hero? A villain? An anti-hero? An anti-villain? Chaotic neutral? What are your blokes opinions on him?
  22. Holy cow, same! For me, Atium has always been a darker metal- but it has a certain unnatural sheen/iridescence about it as well. Kind of like an oil spill? I suppose? And Lerasium is green. Full stop.
