  1. Hoid is my favourite character, which is ridiculous because when he isn't a side character in SA, he only has brief appearances or cameos.
  2. hey guys, that Elantris pronunciation guide was helpful, if counter-intuitive (at least for me ), is there a guide for SA as well. ***Below has a Cosmere spoiler so read only if you have read MB*** I think MB names are the easiest to pronounce, even if I do get Demoux and Renoux confused all the time; whilst rereading I kept asking myself 'how the hell is Renoux a member of the 17th Shard?! OreSeur CONSUMED him! But then I remembered it's Demoux *face palm*
  3. thanks for the link! I watched an interview with Sanderson and he pronounced Adolin as ADE-olin, and I had been pronouncing it Uh-doll-in, probably bc I live in Scotland and the Scottish accent makes it sound like that. I'm really going to have to get used to the pronunciation.
  4. I've just finished reading Elantris and throughout the book I kept changing how I pronounced character names in my head. This is largely due to the fact that I tend pronounce all vowel sounds as I would pronounce vowel sounds in Japanese (the language I am currently studying). I realised that my initial pronunciation was likely incorrect so I started playing around with other possible pronunciations that fit comfortably in my mouth, so to speak. After watching a Sanderson q&a in which he pronounces the name of Raoden in a way I hadn't even considered I suddenly became very curious about character name pronunciations. In short: is there an existing guide? Also, the way Sanderson pronounced Adolin is not at all how I pronounce it but I've read SA books twice now and I think it will take me a third time to get used to how character names are actually pronounced. P.S. Do you pronounce is JAS-nah or YAS-nah? I think there was a passage in WoR where Shallan is speaking to Pattern and mentions the Alethi J is pronounced like a Y, but I'll be damned if I can break the habit of wanting to pronounce it JAS-nah.
  5. Whoa, have the above been confirmed by Brandon in interview or is it in the books somewhere? I only ask because I haven't read every interview with Brandon and I can't think where it mentions the above information in WoK or WoR but I would very much like to know because I am trying to figure out who are Heralds, worldhoppers, etc. as I continue to read more books and reread previous books. EDIT: I have since read more theories above and now understand where in the books the above is mentioned.
  6. I agree with @thegatorgirl00, I think her next truth will be something more personal to her. I am unsure as to how she will handle finding out Kaladin is the one responsible for killing Helaran. In WoR after she discovers Amaram was responsible for Helaran's death she does have a thought along the lines of 'Well what else was Amaram suppoed to do? Helaran was trying to kill him'. I will need to look up the specific passage when I'm home from work for page reference because I cannot remember if she thinks this when she is still in disguise talking to Amaram outside his manor, or if she thinks it when she is taking shelter from the Highstorm with Kal in the Plains when he's telling her his stoy. But I don't think she's put it together yet that Kal is responsible for Helaran's death. (?) Will it be a major character interaction for her and Kal when she does find out, due to their tenuous relationship, she is afterall starting to have feelings of attraction for him but not aware of it; could finding out Kal is responsible for Helaran's death be a major blow? Or will she eventually come to terms with it as she did with Amaram, e.g.Thinking Well, Helaran was trying to kill somebody but was killed instead. I personally think she will be more preoccupied with finding out why Helaran was trying to kill Amaram, where he got his Shardblade, and in general, what the hell he was up to.
  7. What are your thoughts on Aimians, and/or on Axies the collector? I really like Axies from the little we've seen of him, but I am trying to understand why all the other races on Roshar are not down with Aimians. I am intrigued.
  8. Favourite Sanderson series thus far is Stormlight Archive. I love the character arcs in Words of Radiance just a tad more, however. Although the plateau runs and bridgemen scenes in WoK are just too good, too awesome
  9. part of me always interpreted it as something like Roshar's Rubix cube, something to fidget with when feeling anxious to occupy his mind. Renarin reminds me a lot of Shallan's brother Wikim, both vaguely ill and frail, expected to lead the life of ardents, and really good with numbers, equations, puzzles and the like.
  10. As long as they're buttery shortbread cookies, I think I will indulge, thank you.
  11. Well having reread existing Kingkiller Chronicle books I reread Stormlight Archive and I am now beginning to reread first Mistborn trilogy. I notice above people have mentioned the Gentlemen Bastard sequence, I read The Lies of Loch Lamora a couple of months ago and I definitely want to pick up the rest of the books in the series but I got distracted with Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy which I am loving- that man understands characterisation, all of the characters in First Law are such assholes that I cannot help but take a shine to. I tried reading The Vorrh at the beginning of this month but I have a feeling it will sit on my shelf for a while, I couldn't get into the writing style or the tone. I have a habit of dropping books when I'm not in the right frame of mind to read them, then picking them back up months or even years later and absolutely loving them, so we'll see how it goes with this one. I made the mistake of reading the first two Dresden Files books after I first read Kingkiller Chronicle, I was craving some urban fantasy and had heard so much about them I thought I'd dip my toesies in. However, I felt like the books lacked so much depth or substance having come off epic fantasy that I feel like I didn't really appreciate Dresden Files' offerings. I have been advised by numerous readers that the first books in the series are okay and to keep reading as the series gets so damnation good, but I really struggled with the quick pacing of the books after Rothfuss' languished storytelling, I felt like the books were all action and plot, and I wanted more character development and world building. This is probably why I prefer epic stories because I just love spending time in other worlds hanging out with characters.
