  3. Just saw that they add this in the project update: All his life, Sixth of the Dusk has been a traditional trapper of Aviar—the supernatural birds his people bond with—on the deadly island of Patji. Then one fateful night he propels his people into a race to modernize before they can be conquered by the Ones Above, invaders from the stars who want to exploit the Aviar. But it’s a race they’re losing, and Dusk fears his people will lose themselves in the effort. When a chance comes to sail into the expanse of the emberdark beyond a mystical portal, Dusk sets off to find his people’s salvation with only a canoe, his birds, and all the grit and canniness of a Patji trapper. Elsewhere in the emberdark is a young dragon chained in human form: Starling of the starship Dynamic. She and her ragtag crew of exiles are deep in debt and on the brink of losing their freedom. So when she finds an ancient map to a hidden portal between the emberdark and the physical realm, she seizes the chance at a lucrative discovery. These unlikely allies might just be the solution to each other’s crisis. In their search for independence, Dusk and Starling face perilous bargains, poisonous politics, and the destructive echo of a dead god. I guess this would explain why Xisis is in such a bad situation.

(If you’re @The Bookwyrm, find the giant balls of burning gas and admire the science behind them) I don’t have time to respond to everyone’s SU’s, but I see so many people who are so alone, and so lost, and sad. I see you. I remember you. I hear you. If you need me, I’m here. Keep laughing, ok? Find reasons to smile. Sometimes, we just have to take advice from the Lord of Scars. If we can laugh, we are winning.

  5. Figured I'd start a thread for furthering input; since there is going to be a Mistborn as an antagonist come era 3, what kinds of tools would help them perform the traditional processes of a Mistborn assassin/sneak/warrior? 1. Cloth-covered coins: we see Vin use this a little in HoA, where having a little cloth covering you coins used for Steeljumping gives you greater stealth. 2. Aluminum daggers: since this is going to be a lot more common come era 3, it would prove quite useful for a Mistborn to have some upgrades to their hand-to-hand weaponry. Maybe their would even be an alloy of aluminum to make it sturdier. You could also coat the blade(s) in a dark substance to keep it from being shiny in the dark. 3. Aluminum vials/pouches: this would keep your metals safe from being Pushed or Pulled on, so no need to worry about losing them in combat. 4. Fingerless aluminum-lined gloves: now, I see a lot of potential for these; you can handle Bendalloy nuggets in your palm to ingest while keeping them safe from Allomancy, you can add aluminum covered steel knuckles for more punching force, when punching a Leecher they won't be able to Leech you, and with the finger tips exposed you have more dexterity and can Leech your own targets. 5. Ball-bearing cannon box; not really something they're going to use to often as it's big and clunky, but imagine a box with 100-300 steel ball-bearings held in place by a thin cloth. Then put the box on its side and attach it to a crossbow handle. Basically, this allows the Mistborn to use a duralumin/pewter/Steelpush to make a massively destructive grapeshot when in battle. 6. Allomantic body piercings; another source of Allomantic reserves that my be more tolerant to being Leeched or may be usable for longer periods of time. Plus, they can just be kept in the body without the need to ingest them if the Mistborn were to be attacked unexpectedly. They could also be used in an emergency as a Pushable weapon or item to break their fall if they lose their coin pouch and have no other metal. What else do you guys think would be a good tool for Mistborn?

  7. I was casually reading The Lost Metal when I came across an interesting description of everyone's favorite character: Allomancer Jak. In the above excerpt (emphasis mine) we see a couple of faulty descriptions of Allomancy. Flight obviously refers to Coinshots or Lurchers. Eating rocks is, technically, a very good description of what Allomancers do to fuel their abilities. The talking to birds, though...that's a new one. As best we know, no Allomantic ability is capable of this. Obviously, the story is conflating a few different aspects of Scadrial's magic systems under the broad term "Allomancy" and we can't expect a miner in (what was very likely) the Roughs to get all the details right. So, where did Wayne's mother get the idea of talking to birds? Well, the obvious answer is a kandra. Obvious, so long as you have a modicum of sanity left to you. But I, free from the mortal constraints of such petty things as rationality, had a thought. What if Wayne's mother wasn't conflating Hemalurgy with Allomancy, but Feruchemy? We're all familiar with how F-Duralumin works to a certain extent by now. Tap blank Connection in a foreign land, and you are instantly able to speak and comprehend the local language, albeit with an accent. The implication is that this is among the simplest application of Feruchemical Connection, and that more sophisticated uses likely exist. So, I propose a fairly intuitive extrapolation. What if you somehow manipulated Connection to facilitate communication between animals? Inherently, a Feruchemist tapping Connection could make animals more trusting. So, this isn't a huge step forwards. But, yeah. This was just fun to type out. Thoughts? Longshot97

  8. I feel like he does though. All the videos and streams are clearly labeled if that's the topic and if he's going to read something spoilery he gives warning at that point in the video (or speech at the con) so you can bail out then. Not to mention all the readings and wobs do end up transcribed, either via Brandon and staff or the Arcanum. I can get feeling like there are too many streams, though people like me would absolutely prefer more. It certainly could feel overwhelming to people.

  13. This WoB is newer and Brandon directly said many forms are capable of reproducing. This is as straightforward as it can be. And you can also be fertile and asexual. Many reasons. You want to lower your chances of fertilization (but it still happened), you don't like being in the Mateform, you just have an opportunity now as your partner is leaving shortly and you can't wait for a storm to change forms, you didn't become a Mateform unlike your partner (it happened before Listeners started using gemstones to trap spren), or maybe something tragic happened and it wasn't consensual. Does it make sense now? The definition of "several" from Oxford Languages is "more than two but not many." Mateform and Slaveform aren't the only forms that feel sexual attraction, but this is separate from being able to reproduce. Asexuallity doesn't mean infertility, those things are separate.

  17. I think I've used this analogy before but it best sums it up: Aviars are Sprens without oaths that grant allomancy. They have an immense number of advantages over other sources of investiture: They are not restricted to a specific inheritance. They do not need to comply with a series of restrictive rules. The amount of powers they can grant seems to be equivalent to the number of bird species existing (in the entire cosmere) It is highly reusable and can be passed on to someone else with very few mishaps. This is hemalurgy, it is the drawbacks of hemalurgy, surgebinding without the drawbacks of surgebinding.

  19. I've had this discussion several places, I am posting it here. Specifically, there are two threads in the Backerkit discussion for Sanderson's current campaign. Spammers have discovered that the default settings in Backerkit will send email notifications to users when they get followed. They create bot accounts in Backerkit and follow thousands of accounts, causing those users to receive an email with a suggestive title and a suspicious website. Then, the 'followers' page for that user on Backerkit involuntarily hosts a link to that same website. There is no way to turn off these emails until you get your first follower, after which you can unsubscribe from the email or send the notifications to spam. There is no way to prevent people from following you or boot followers from your profile. The only solution is to email support at backerkit and report the user. If you're pledging secret novel 5 and this concerns you, reach out to Backerkit and let them know. If you're seriously bothered, consider depledging before the campaign completes as you won't be able to delete your account while you have a pledge project unshipped.

  21. Allomancy and Feruchemy grant a strictly limited set of abilities The other powers require an external fuel (Stormlight, purified Dor, Breaths) Aethers bound you to a core aether and are not fully usable without extra fuel on many worlds Spren need Stormlight. Without it a spren gives you only a blade and maybe armour, no powers. But in that case she already would have left Yolen.

  22. He tenses as Swordfish draws closer. He searches his memory for any information on this epic, frantically trying to remember his weakness. He's afraid, and worried that he might have to use his powers. Perhaps he'd have to sacrifice the kid. For the greater good. No! What was he thinking? He should save all the lives that he could. He breathes in deep, then touches the concrete wall of the hideout. He forms a chunk of it into a long, silver sword and a pocket of air behind it so he can take the sword out. He immediatley feels an intense hatred towards the epic. Lavoisier was much more powerful than him. Why should he get to threaten him? He calmed himself down. Save the child. That was his objective. Save the stupid, whiny, ugly little- Sparks. This was going to be hard. Regardless, he jumped out from the shadows and slipped his sword behind Swordfish's blade, blocking him from slitting the childs throat. He pushed the kid aside and fell into s swordfighting stance.

  23. I can see that - Tress takes itself a bit less seriously. also Hoid is more actively involved in Tress, as opposed to Yumi, and that can help a bit as well because it sort of internally makes more sense that he would be talking about it. but as I recall (and its been a bit since I read either) he was also adding a lot more commentary in Tress, so for me at least it was more distracting. it more or less works sometimes, but there is definitely such a thing as too much.

  24. I actually thought that it was Frost that exiled her for some reason. Knowing how strictly non-interventionist Frost is, Starling might have been pushed by Hoid to do something with which Frost might not agree. Something drastic, which influenced politics on a greater scale and possibly against dragon’s traditions, so other dragons would want to exile her and Frost agreed with them. Dragons exist outside of Yolen. One only needs to look at Xisis on Lumar to know how many different stories about dragons might exist across Cosmere. Dragons are entrepreneurs, they have businesses, own companies etc. I bet Xisis is exploiting the fact that he recently acquired a skilled captain, so why not use her to run him merchant errands across Cosmere? But the choice of crewmembers is interesting. If Scadrians have a way to deal with Avatars (they kind of dealt with Trell already), then it makes sense why Patji would sit quietly. If not then that's a good question. But I think the answer is simple - he sent Dusk. Patji might have put Dusk in a position to help. I agree, I think Hoid is partially responsible for that. DId I miss something from the reading where it said Xisis is in a bad position? I didn't get that. Sure, the ship is old and junky, Xisis owns it, but Starling also said it's her ship. So if someone is in debt, I bet they're indebted to Xisis, risking becoming his slaves - not all as Aditil can just leave, or the Sleepless who was chosen by Hoid and it's there temporarily.

  28. In general, I imagine the forms with too much carapace or are hyper-specialized don't reproduce; Warform, for example, may be unable to. But forms like Workform or Nimbleform probably could, or rather we have no reason to suspect they couldn't.

I feel like there are still secrets and information that have been hinted at enough that I would call it a "promise" that we don't have the reveal for. How did he get anti-voidlight? How did Gavilar get wrapped into all this in the first place? What did Gavilar set in motion that Thaidakar couldn't stop? Nothing about Axindweth or Gereh?

Finally captured my favorite moment from The Way of Kings! First Syl appearance before Kaladin. I don't know why, but when I re-read the first book... it makes me soooo emotional, especially Kaladin moments (and Syl, how she develops and everything). Ahhhhhhh~~~ Book 5 can't come any sooner, but I have a great opportunity to capture my favorite moments with Kal and Syl before the epic conclusion of the first arc
