  2. For the "what would endowment's description be like?" question I'd like to submit; She was a force that gave from an infinite well of power. A thread that started with the first aspect of life, and continued on until the end of all things. She was that which connected all things, the inheritance of the first ancestors to their very last descendants. She was the talent of a craftsman, the belief of a martyr, the knowledge of a genius, the wealth of a merchant, and the strength of a warrior, for she was every trait that was passed to an heir. She was passed from father to son, mother to daughter, teacher to student, mentor to protégé, since the beginning of mankind and until its end. She was the light that gave sight, the blood that gave life, and the air that gave Breath.

Young Dalinar & Evi for you all. My favorite Stormlight couple (former) so far! So beautiful yet so tragic.

  4. @The Forgetful Archivist Panic attacks are NOT fun. I lived with them (about 3 a day) since i was young. Medicine helped me a lot with this. I was on Paxil from age 10-21, then stopped taking it. Panic attacks started back and i went back on it, then switched it around. Paxil tended to strip me of emotions so i wanted to try other things. Switched to Effexor and hated it, then swapped to Lexapro and thats where im at now and this medicine acts perfect for me. Takes a little patience to get the right one, plus you wont really notice anything until about 3 weeks in usually. Just hang in there. Thoughts of cutting or burning, They can be frightening. A trick i have picked up for this is oddly enough: Rubber bands. Keep one around your wrist, and if you feel the need, you can pull it back and snap it against your wrist. Safer alternative if you need it. Talking to a therapist is great. A lot of people tend to be afraid to go, or to talk out about what they are going through. Im glad you are able to speak out about it, and seek help. Just remember not to close up and withdraw. It can be hard sometimes but push through and you will be ok. It might take time, keep that in mind. Not every medicine you try will work, it can be annoying and disheartening, but finding the right medicine takes time sometimes, dont be afraid of speaking to whomever and telling them your medicine makes you feel weird, or you dont like it. Once you find the right one, you will know. Just keep your head up, and although i might not know you on a personal level, know I am always around if you need someone to talk to, or need support. I can relate a good bit. Ive got your back.

  5. Itiah VII heard the Oracle confirm an accusation, and became slightly annoyed he hadn’t been able to be played for long. He had an itching feeling his writer had had fun when writing him, and so came up with an idea. “Hey!” He yelled out. “I have an idea. How about you use me for your next game? You can do your character development and all that jazz there!” “I’m not even married!” At this point, Itiah gave up all hope. He wanted to be played, not to be left as another entry in his writer’s signature. He also realised something, something mindbreaking, something even the writer wouldn’t guess, if he wasn’t writing this right now. “Hey, you realise you’re talking to yourself, right? If I’m fictional and you’re real, you’re actually just talking to yourself. Wierdo.” “That’s right. Sure, what if I’m a figment of your imagination, then what? All that means is that you just fooled yourself into talking to and screen, and just write the responses.” “Also, you’re going to look like an idiot when you submit this, so I would recommend not to. Also, who’s narrating you?”

  8. I have fully embraced being a thestral (Harry Potter reference) as a part of my job being a bus driver. I try to greet and engage the students, but the only thing they have ever said is when one asked if I got a haircut; when I replied yes another student piped up, "I just assumed we got a new driver." Seriously I see them twice a day for weeks, but a haircut is a impenetrable disguise haha!

  10. Larry heard the accusation and quickly dismissed it. There was no way an investigator, even one part of Investicon, would have enough information ALREADY to be able to legitimately make an accusation. Then, the Oracle confirmed. Well then. Larry switched hats immediately. Excuse me, Mr. Selksi. Not only do I sell insurance, but I also dabble in the bail bond industry. I can have you out of prison, able to defend yourself immediately upon your arraignment, assuming the judge allows a bail amount that is. Other than that, I do have several insurance plans available for the incarcerated. Stolen lunch insurance Prison yard insurance Abusive guard insurance Among others. Additionally, I can recommend quite a good lawyer. My brother Barry is an excellent defense attorney. ~~ Well done Elandera.

  11. Perfect Endowment performance, Grace! As far as Endowment shaping Edgli's mind, The divine attribute she represents is Blessing. She is the cosmic gift giver! In her letter, she expresses disdain for Hoid refusing the divine power that was offered him (when he had a chance to be one of the vessels). She hates it when someone turns down divine powers offered them. Her whole thing seems to be giving the Cosmere a little extra oomph. Colors are more vibrant, Nightblood is more powerful than he should be (I know not confirmed it was her doing). The magic system on Nalthis, Awakening, allows humans to do what she does on a micro-scale: giving abilities to things that did not have them before. With Awakening the Breath must be freely given it cannot be stolen (it can be coerced). Also, note the receiver doesn't have the option of refusing the gift of breath once the words are said, much to Denth's dismay. They can re-gift, but they can't be rude and refuse the gift sent to them. Gifting, enhancing, blessing is Endowment's deal. She is about enhancing already existing things, not so much about creating new things. She takes what exists and makes it the same, but more so. "You had a chance to be more and refused it" How rude!!! On Nalthis, everyday is Christmas (or other gift-giving holiday).

  12. Did you just apologize for winning the game *(if the witness survives)? Also, quick PSA everyone: Our illustrious IM @Alvron has given us permission to rerun this game immediately. So as soon as this game wraps up we’ll have a brief intermission period where people can drop out or jump in if they want, and then we’ll start game#2. More details to follow.

  15. Yes. Day 1.5 - Sudden Death Oyh paced back and forth, rereading his copy of the proclamation announcement card for the hundredth time. He didn't know why, he had already gleaned as much information from the Oracle's mad scribblings as he could hours ago, and so he had sent Veh out to do a little investigating. All he could do now was wait until- Veh slid into the room and began moving in circles around Oyh, his form rapidly pulsing and shifting in excitement. "You were right!" The spren buzzed loudly, attracting attention from those people nearby. "I found the mmmurder. In Elantris. A dead body, caught in a booby trap. And footsteps in the slime. Mmmm. Footsteps led here." "That's it!" Oyh said, remembering. He had seen someone with slime on their shoe. Who had it been... Oyh's gaze snapped up, looking around. "Selksi!" He shouted, and the hall grew quiet as people turned to listen to him. "Where is Selksi?" Everyone turned, searching for Selksi, but it quickly became obvious that he was no longer in the sparsely populated convention hall. He had managed to sneak out somehow. "Did anyone see where Selksi went?" Oyh called. ...TO BE CONTINUED... Congrats to @Elandera for correctly solving the crime! However, the Assassin and his accomplice have 1 last chance to escape getting caught. They get 24 hours and 1 chance to correctly guess who the witness is. If they guess correctly, then they can assassinate the Witness and escape scot free. @Metaspren: The clock is ticking!

  16. Its been a bit of a bad week, hopefully, yall won't mind if I vent a bit. I started having panic attacks about 2 weeks ago, and asked for a leave of absence at work (I work at a local pizza joint) they were not at all understanding and tried to fire me until they realized the possible legal implications. So they gave me my leave in the most uncaring and condescending way they could. I went to the doctor and he got me on some medication but stuff didn't really get better (I guess it takes a while to get into my system), I had panic attacks almost every day for the next week and a half and even had some thoughts about cutting or burning myself. on top of this I used to have a really bad speech impediment that took 10 years of speech therapy to get over, and now its started to come back, which kind of really sucks. I started missing a lot of school and I have had to drop all my classes to focus on getting better. Rationally I know it's not quitting, but it still feels that way, and I don't like giving up. I finally got in to talk to some sort of therapist person and he's pretty sure I have Bipolar II and OCD and we've only just started to dig, who knows what else might turn up. On one hand, its good to be making progress to patching my mind back together, but its also kinda freaking me out, sometimes medications don't work, and bipolar has a fairly high suicide rate. This really scares me. Basically, everyone agrees that I'm pretty messed up, but we still don't have any concrete ideas on how to fix it.

  17. I am making an accusation! I accuse Metaspren (Selksi) of being the Assasin. I think he used a Booby Trap to commit the murder and the Key Evidence he left behind is Elantrian Slime. @Herowannabe

  18. This. I don't think Odium care at all for either side. Descrimination and prejudice are major themes in SA, and like that issue, I think Odium (as Hatred) just needs to keep everyone pointed at each other to win. They have to figure it out and work past their differences to band together against Odium. As long as the conflict is singer vs human, Odium wins. Doesn't matter which side is backed by who.

It’s been four years and I drew the crew again! This took me a whole week to finish, but worth it! From left to right (post-WoR settings): Navani (with fabrials), Jasnah (with Ivory), Dalinar (with the Stormfather), Szeth (with Nightblood), Shallan (with Pattern), Kaladin (with Syl), Renarin, Lift (with Wyndle), Adolin and Elhokar. (There are also several arms belonging to some random characters in Dalinar’s army.) Group high five: Let’s save Roshar! (They are standing in a sunlight-lit room in Urithiru.) Full-sized piece on DeviantART: http://fav.me/dboywc5 Close view: Bonus: You can see my progress (I hope!) during these years: (Seems like they were done by two different people…)

  23. As I read many of the arguments, that one stuck out to me as most likely to be accidental. Not in the sense that it accidentally led to a death, since we were very clearly talking about a murder, but more in the sense that the murder was random rather than targeted. That also kind of fit the "Despicable" card, as the murderer in that case wouldn't care who died. When I noticed booby trap had a corresponding Sel-link with what was left behind, I figured I'd either get it, or cross another thing off the list.

  24. Storms. It came down to Wiritos or King, and we went with King. I agree, I think the Shardworld location tile is too specific. We chose the Slime to misdirect towards the other Elantrian Methods and Evidence, but even then you would have guessed in time. With 17 available guesses and only 15 or so possibilities, it's too easy to narrow it down. Decreasing the number of hint tiles, getting rid of the Shardworld Location, or pushing the number of cards per person up to 5 would all make it harder for the Investigators (although some of these might be overkill). The game is very much in the Investigator's favour - even if Elandera hadn't stuck the improbable guess, I don't think we would have made it to the 3rd Cycle. Elandera, why in particular did you pick Booby Trap? Only PK and wiritos really highlighted it, as opposed to the number of others theorising about the Aons.

  25. Epilogue John 'Not-A-Murderer-At-All' Smith cried out as the axe fell, burying itself deep into his shoulder. He fell to the ground, screaming and writhing. The wound was a mortal one, but it wasn't immediately fatal. Selksi tried to wrench the axe free to finish his second victim off, but it was stuck and wouldn't pull free. Selksi heard running footsteps behind him as he finally wrenched the axe free. He spun around just in time to catch a glimpse of someone swinging a knife at him. The two of them crashed into each other and Selksi felt something thump against his chest, but the pain was minimal. They rolled across the street a few times before Selksi was able to kick the other man off of him. He snatched up his axe and prepared to swing, but he heard shouts and more footsteps coming closer, drawn by John Smith's cries of pain, so he turned and fled into the darkness instead. Moments later the street was filled with people, most surrounding John Smith and trying desparately to treat his injury, but a few stopped to check on Wirito and help him to his feet. He had twisted his ankle in his brief tussle with Selksi, but it wasn't too bad. "What happened?" someone asked. "I caught Selksi just in time to see him attack John and I tackled him, but he fought his way free and ran off." Wirito said. "Damnation, he got away again!" "Not quite," Wirito said slyly. He pulled a strange metal device out of his backpack and began adjusting a few dials and knobs set into the side of it. He pressed a button and a flat panel on the device flashed, then resolved into a hazy image. It looked vaguely like a map, and there was a brightly glowing dot slowly moving across it's surface. ***** Selksi slipped into the safehouse and closed the door behind him. "Well?" Tezed asked, getting up out of his chair. "What happened?" "I killed John," Selksi said. "Or at least, he won't survive for long. I'm pretty sure he was the one we saw when we set the booby trap. The other investigators nearly caught me, but I gave them the slip and made my way back here. Nobody followed me." Tezed sighed, relaxing. "So we're good then. We just have to slip through the nearest perpendicularity and... Hey, you're bleeding!" Selksi looked down at his chest where Tezed was pointing. Indeed there was a small trickle of blood staining his shirt, and a small glint of something metallic protruding slightly. "Hmm? Oh, that's nothing. I can barely even feel it. Come on, let's grab our stuff and get outta here." "Barely even- Man there's something sticking out of your chest, come here." Selksi tried to resist, but Tezed was quicker, grabbing Selksi and pulling something out of his chest. He held it up. In the dim light they could make out what seemed to be a large nail. Or perhaps, a small spike. "What the-?" They were interrupted as the door burst in, investigators flooding into the room. Leading the charge was a crazy woman with a large pig with bloodthirsty eyes. Selksi and Tezed never stood a chance. The End! Congratulations to the investigators! In case it wasn't clear from the write ups, here was the role distribution: Metaspren (Selksi) - Assassin Randuir (Tezed) - Co-conspirator Wiritospren - Witness All the rest of the players were investigators. I wasn't sure how balanced the game would be with this many people so I just did one of each role to see how it would play out. I think next time we might do something to give the Assassin a bit of an edge. In fact, I'm thinking that we should change the Location #4 tile (the one with the various shardworlds) to something that isn't so cosmere specific. I think it makes it too hard for the Assassin to pick clues when the majority of them can be easily identified by which planet they're from. Thoughts? Any other suggestions? Anyway, I'll go ahead and start a new thread for the game #2, so we can leave this one for anyone who wants to discuss this game. Oh, that reminds me, here is a link to the Conspirator's doc. Thanks everyone!

  26. Ioc reappeared in space, tapping Cadmium for breath, and floated towards the ruined spaceship that orbited whatever planet they were on. ======= Ioc reached the spaceship, breathing softly, and started pushing itself around the exterior, looking for an opening. ‘What are we doing?’ asked Prefrontal Cortex. ‘Looking through a damaged spaceship,’ said Amygdala flatly. ‘Now playing Dunkirk’s ‘The Oil,’ said Hippocampus. The song ran through Ioc’s head, automatically looping once it finished. Ioc found a hatchway and touched it, then used the Surge of Adhesion to connect it’s hand and the door. Then, it tapped Pewter, inflating with muscle. Ioc used the Surge of Adhesion once more, to press it’s other large hand and both feet against the doorframe (hatchwayframe?). Then, Ioc pulled, and ripped off the opening. It had already been damaged sufficiently, so it wasn’t that hard, but it did use up the rest of Ioc’s Pewter. ‘You know,’ said Association Cortex, ‘We really gotta save more of that up,’ ‘I don’t like going around at half strength,’ said Subconscious. ‘Now, hush,’ The inside was already an airless, gravity-less vacuum, so Ioc just pushed itself inside, floating along in the middle of the ‘foyer’. The entire ship was mainly one room, except for one locked door that Ioc could see. Floating in the middle of the room was a man, about 5’8”, wearing breathing devices and a large helmet. Somehow, despite the lack of air, speaking in the walls of the spacecraft successfully transmitted, what Ioc inferred to be, the floating man’s mutterings through the area. “Gone… All gone…” Ioc frowned. “Excuse me?” it said before it realized that sound wouldn’t carry through the void. It did, however, and the man paused in his mutterings. “Who’s there?” he asked through the speakers. “John Johnson,” said Ioc immediately. The man jerked in the void. “John? You survived?” ‘Dangit,’ said Amygdala. “No,” Ioc said. “I’m a different John Johnson,” “Really?” the man asked. “You sound just like him…” “What is this spacecraft called” Ioc asked, for the sake of conversation. “The ‘Noble Flight’, from the planet Berzengia,” the man replied, his voice sounding stronger than the mutterings before. “Berzengia? I’ve never heard of it,” Ioc said, frowning deeper. “Do you know where we are?” “No, where are we?” the man asked. “Oh, I was asking you. I don’t actually know what planet we’re on. I think we’re either in the Alleyverse, the Cosmere, or some version of the planet Earth,” The man groaned. “Of course this ship brings me somewhere I haven’t heard of before. The Alleyverse? And that’s a planet? Why is it called a ‘verse’, then?” “You know,” Ioc said, the frown being replaced by a smile, “I don’t know. I suspect the Alleyverse is more than a planet, but I don’t actually know,” “Huh,” the man said. “Anyway, what did you mean when you said ‘of course the ship brought you here,’” Ioc asked, imitating the man’s gruff voice when quoting him. The other man fell silent. “You know, you don’t have to make fun of my voice like that. All the kids used to as well. I’m twenty five years old,” Ioc laughed. “Really? I thought you were, like, sixty!” The man sighed. “Anyway, this ship is powered by a different kind of motor than most,” “Well, I dunno about most ships. I only saw one fabrial ship, and that one blew up after ten seconds,” “Fabrial…?” “Devices powered by some god person’s breath that gemstones happen to absorb. Anyway, continue,” “Okay,” the man said, “This ship is powered by something called an Infinite Improbability Drive, and essentially, it makes the ship do and go weird places,” Ioc whistled. “You really failed at that grammar. Also, AWESOME!!!” “I don’t know why I’m explaining this to you,” the man said with a sigh. “I’m not usually very talkative. It’s probably the IID affecting me. It’s still on, the ship's just not moving right now. Weird stuff happens around them,” Everything turned into a light shade of beige. “Huh,” the man said. “I’ve never seen beige before,” “I must be affecting it,” Ioc said. “So, how would I go about getting one of these IIDs?” “Well,” the man said through the speakers, “I’d give you mine, I hate the things, but I need it to go home. Maybe you could come with? I don’t know why I’m offering this, i’m usually a very shy person,” Ioc thought. “I have a better idea,” it said, then pushed forward to the man. “What?” the man said. “What idea?” “This.” Ioc said, the put a hand on either side of the large helmet, infusing each side with stormlight, and Lashed both sides inward with the Surge of Gravitation. Then, there was a sick onomatopoeia sound and a floating mess that looked a little like an imploded head, because that’s what it was. The floating man was silent, maily because he no longer had a functioning brain. “Now,” Ioc said aloud, because it was still in ConversationMode(™) “How do I drive this?” It turned to the locked door, then pulled out a Firebringer’s Lens, and turned the door into a goop. Beyond the door was a large motor-shaped thing that looked perfectly normal…. except it was made of the same material as a cloud. Then, it turned into a mass of bubbles, still in the same general shape. Then, a swarm of stagnant butterflies. ‘Ah ha,’ said Subconscious, because Ioc was no longer in ConversationMode(™). ‘Jackpot,’ The entire spaceship proceeded to turn inside out. ‘Wow,’ said Thalamus, ‘That’s a great view,’ It was a great view, because with the ship inside out Ioc had a clear view of the planet they orbited. Suddenly, there was a foreseeable spontaneous tug on the ship, sending it unpredictably on it’s strange path towards the planet, yanked inward by a gravitational pull that should have been unrelevant this far out. Each star brightened then dimmed, each one resolving into a smiley face. The inside-out ship did a loop-de-doop while following it’s counter-orbital inward round towards the planet. ‘Wow,’ said Steve, ‘Wesa gonna die, huh?’ All of the partyoners whent craz-craz with ishkadiddlyotenbotenbobaditendatewatentateninnish laughter. An incendiary grenade from Ioc’s purse went off, blowing a hole in spacetime itself due to a coincidentally-placed frayed segment of reality, creating a cross between a black hole and a wormhole, a phenomena that pulls things into itself only to find that that thing was pulled into another galaxy, universe, or dimension. Somehow, however, this danger had no effect on the ship, though it did start pulling some of the smiley faces closer it. Then it was gone, replaced by a politician who looked as though they had been smashed by a potato. This politician tried to cry out, but couldn’t, since this was space and nobody can do that. The planet Ioc was hurtling towards suddenly looked a lot less curvey, then it started to curve the opposite way, towards them instead of away from them. It a second, the slow-moving process jumped, like a snipped out part of a film, and suddenly the inside-out ship was surrounded by the surface of the planet. Ioc thought it could see the Waystop down below. Then, from the surface, the mouth of a huge Ghanderflaffle emerges and the ship flew staigh into it’s maw. The last words Ioc heard were ‘Cookie…… Join the DA…..’ then a different voice saying ‘Cookie….. Join TUBA…….’ and Ioc wondered why they both sounded so dfferent than each other if they both just sold cookies. And everything faded to black. Except for the image of a giant singing Millipede named Cooper, though why it was knamed this or how Ioc knew its kname knobody knew. It was colored beige, with little swirlies imprinted on it’s fish-like scales. Ioc then knew that it had to get out of there, so Ioc flashed beige. The only thing that happened, however, was that suddenly it’s view was inverted. Ioc’s gravity was the same, but however Ioc positioned it’s head, the oncoming light twisted 180 degrees. The ship flew through the upside-down millipede's belly botton, which Ioc found very educational, as it didn’t know milipede’s had belly buttons, and Ioc screamed because an impulse told it tooooo. Then Ioc saw itself from a bird’s eyes view, though inverted. Then, Ioc saw a bird from a worm’s eyes view, through inverted, then Ioc saw an invertation through the eyes of a worm being eaten by a bird, then everything backwards. Then Ioc woke up. It groaned, hitting it’s head on a random steel pole, making a sharp ‘clang’ noise. Ioc then realised something was blocking it’s throat. Ioc coughed it up, then jumped backwards as the ship, which had been lying in miniform in Ioc’s mouth, expanded in size until it was resting on the grassy floor, all polished and pristine. The effect of being close to something as it quickly enlarges in size is that it hits you in the face, though it didn’t hit Ioc because Ioc was to busy trying to quell the voices in it’s head. They had yet to recover, so they were laughing and rolling around on a tilting floor not unlike the grassy one that Ioc was on. Ioc then realized that it should ask why it was on a grassy floor, and why a steel pole whaas positioned above its head when it woke up, then Ioc realized that it should shut up and examine the ship. It seemed to be in good condition, as in, it was all shiny, so Ioc climbed inside. Io had expected the man it had killed to be alive now, because that would be incredibly improbable, but the man still floated in the air with a squished head. Ioc realized that it’s thinking that that should happen meant the possibility that it could happpen was tooo low. Ioc realized that it’s thinking that that should happen meant the possibility that it could happpen was tooo low. Ioc realized that it’s thinking that that should happen meant the possibility that it could happpen was tooo low. Ioc also realized that, although gravity had re-established itself with everything else on the ship, including Ioc and the ship itself, as well as everything in sight (the steel pole outside the ship was supported by the ground as it bent downwards), the dead man still floated in the middle of the ship. That would make it hard to clean out. Upon further inspection, Ioc realized that not only was the dead man floating in the middle of the ship, he was stuck there, imprinted in the exact coordinates of space inside the ship, to remain there forever. That would make it even harder to clean up. Well, Ioc had work to do, so it set to work, though it was sometimes annoying to be blocked from moving by a tiny splat of blood hanging in the air. Ioc eventually located the locked door, opened it (the door was locked, but it hung open slightly) and walked in, seeing the motor in it’s ‘off’ state and metallic. Ioc sighed in relief. Ioc walked towards the cockpit, locked the controls over, grabbed a steering wheel, and yanked upwards. Nothing happened. ‘Well,’ Subconscious said, ‘We’ll have to figure this out more before we get out of here,’ ‘It’s alright, man!’ said Rudolf Ivanovich in a fake french accent, ‘Have a drink and drink drink drink your worries away!' ‘You’re not drunk,’ said Subconscious, frowning. ‘Nope, but I’ma bout to be!’ Rudolf cried. ‘Hear hear!!!’ Ioc decided it needed some sleep. But it was kind of hard to sleep while Dunkirk's 'The Oil' was running in it's head.

  27. I haven't read the Silmarillion. Hey girl, my favourite book is Oathbringer. Feruchemist. I don't want to be Mistborn, I would abuse the power to manipulate emotions. It would lead me to question every relationship I'm ever in. Windrunner. I see what you did there. Roosters don't lay eggs... But if one magically managed to, then it would go in the direction the yoke is internally. Eggs aren't perfectly symmetrical Kaladin. He's more motivational and less psychotic. Purple. I still can't get over the fact that they invented that word. Pants. They look snazzier. The moon. I'd destroy us all in a little under an hour testing it out. I dreamed I had a dragon once. *muttering* sixteen, minus the other number, plus what was it again? SEVENTY-TWO! History class. It's super easy when you've only got 151 years to cover. We had to throw in some filler about Britain and France just to make the textbooks long enough. He he he. You asked for it.... Mosquitoes. I'd tell them to leave me alone for once. Humans. A Jaguar. Rawr. This isn't an answer. I'm not risking getting space cooties just to see if the magic rock gives me powers. (I've seen The Martian, so I know the answer to this one.) A farmer, that way we can grow some crops. Otherwise we can never technically colonize the planet. Eight.

  28. Araha looked at the newcomer, and the way he presented himself. He had a somewhat threatening air about him. Great. She thought, I'm just here for lessons and what do I get? An eccentric man-looking creature that didn't feel pain, a sparking bomb, and now whatever this man's deal is. She ranted in her head. She sighed, she really just wanted to study in peace.

She was the executive who decided that some M&Ms would now have peanuts inside!

  33. Josh said during the podcast that Brandon does a good job keeping his LDS faith out of his writing. I'm just jumping in here with a comment that the whole system of how Radiants work is definitely inspired by the LDS endowment, whether consciously on Brandon's part or not. The endowment is a story about people making increasingly demanding promises to god about what kind of person they will be, going through a testing phase where they prove that they will keep those promises, then getting a reward for it, and making more promises. Sound similar to the Ideals of the Radiants? Yeah. Then there's the whole notion of humans becoming gods, and just the themes Brandon chooses to write about and the way that he writes them; it's pretty obvious to someone who grew up LDS that Brandon is a product of his culture. Not that that's a bad thing (we all are), just saying that there are plenty of influences of Brandon's LDS faith on his writing, if you know where to look.

  36. We do have BR, and I agree, they make good ice cream. But I was referring to Chapman's business practices. After their factory burnt down, they continued to pay their all of their employees while they were rebuilding. And they've done a great job fighting to keep rural schools open, which has been a big issue around here. Plus, they make tasty products. It's impossible to feel guilty while eating their ice cream. They're the ultimate caring local business. Woot!

  37. And Sprene is gone. Fun while it lasted, as name changes usually are.

  38. I think Adolin fits the Edgedancers well, even his concern and consideration for Maya herself treating her almost more like a person than a thing in some ways even before he knew she is a dead spren fits the ideal of "remembering the forgotten".

  39. But Amaram doesn't "side with Odium" until after meeting him at Thalyen Fields, and discovering that what he had been working towards as a member of the Sons of Honor - triggering a Desolation to bring out the Heralds to lead humanity once again - had been a lie, as the Heralds themselves had spent millenia actively hiding and avoiding a Desolation. I also don't see the Ghostbloods giving a molted cremling shell about Kaladin's beef with Amaram. I'm sure when Mraize told the not-yet-accepted-as-a-Ghostblood Shallan that Amaram's "life belongs to another", that was in reference to another Ghostblood, whose name she did not need to know. We do know the GBs have a "hunter/prey" ethic whereby specific members are actively "hunting" someone with "dibs", and towards the end of WoR we see Iyatil trying to shoot Amaram with a poisoned dart (which Taln saves him from), so it's evidently her he was referring to. Exactly why Iyatil had "claimed" Amaram's life is as yet unknown, but it was a claim that was already "in" well before Amaram turned to Odium (well before Torol Sadeas' death, for that matter, which resulted in Amaram becoming the acting Highprince for House Sadeas).

  42. Hmmm. Shape-shifting, functional immortality with no need for spikes. Flight and, presumably, magic. I think I can get used to this.

  46. They were causally betrothed, which is a step below being officially betrothed - it seems akin to exclusively dating the way it’s discussed. (See Ch 1 Santhid and Ch 49 Watching the World Transform in WoR for some discussion.) But I don’t think this would lessen your distaste, as it is an exclusive romantic relationship, just one where “oaths” (ie official promises) have not been spoken yet. The lack of oaths is what people were trying to say in the quotes above (a spren wouldn’t understand a commitment without the oath; note Kaladin gets it and even tells Syl she’s not understanding correctly.) I find your suppression language a little odd because the idea of suppressing anything has a very unhealthy connotation. That said, I agree that when you are in a committed relationship and you have romantic feelings outside of your committed relationship you should either (i) resolve those feelings and continue with your committed relationship or (ii) end that committed relationship. Shallan instead chooses to intensify her commitment (by progressing to marriage) while simply attempting to ignore (or as she puts it, stuff to the back of her brain) her feelings for Kaladin. But if you truly believe those feelings should be “suppressed”, then she does this rather well because they are shoved onto an alter and that alter is subjugated. So I guess you should be happy with that? I think most of us here don’t think she handled it well, and given the state of her feelings, she should have chosen no relationship with either (so option two which you consider an acceptable choice.) In my personal opinion, this was not a fun fluffy love triangle where our heroine just can’t figure out which boy to kiss (I find those annoying) but a literary device to show just how fractured and confused Shallan has become. All three character participants were extremely uncomfortable by the feelings present (Kaladin didn’t want his feelings for Shallan, Shallan didn’t want her feelings for Kaladin, Adolin didn’t want Shallan to have feelings for Kaladin), so I don’t think it was supposed to be an enjoyable experience. Especially against the backdrop of Shallan’s increasingly more severe mental illness. I actually find the reaction that Shallan choosing Adolin was great conclusion to their cute relationship to be emotionally off for this exact reason; none of this was fun to read. But SA often isn’t fun as it grapples with hard, painful issues; that’s the nature of Radiance, they are all broken. I also hope we don’t see Kaladin as part of Adolin and Shallan’s marriage issues. They have plenty of issues on their own without him, so I think (and hope) the termination of their relationship will not involve him. If you are morally opposed to the ending of a marriage, I can’t help you there though, except that I think the same parameters apply to any marital issue: you have to resolve it or end the relationship. I believe Adolin and Shallan will have issues they cannot resolve, and thus will hopefully do what they should have done in OB (and what Adolin seems to have wanted) and end the relationship.
