  3. Setting High in the Horneater Peaks, hotsprings bubble and hiss, emitting sulfurous fumes. Some spit bright mud in waves, while others steam over delicate natural formations. A few have been tampered by humankind, shaped in such a way that they are cool enough for humans to not burn themselves. One of them doesn’t bubble, or steam, or smell. It is a perpendicularity between realms, and it is closely guarded. A trail leads from the most accessible part of the pool toward a twisted tree, which barely survived the extreme heats. If one went left at the tree, then one would follow the short path down to a Horneater village, one that benefits from further heated pools. It isn’t large, but it isn’t small, and the townspeople are kind. They speak of Numuhukumakiaki'aialunamor, their rightful king, and they speak of the Radients returning, but they whisper of what you will find if you turn right at the tree instead of left. Up the winding path, crisscrossing over small wooden bridges and around mud pots, there are small signs. One boldly tells you that “No Hemalurgy” is allowed, another “Investiture Training”, and yet a third proclaims “Best Apple Crisp in the Cosmere!” The first, when one turns right at the tree, is large, and is carved in more than twenty different languages. “Welcome to Roshar! Waystop is 1/8 of a mile ahead – Food – Stormlight – Allomantic Metals – Clothing – Rooms for Rent or Use – Investiture Training (not Hemalurgy) – All Guilds Welcome – Clean Privies”. A tiny sign below it tacks on “must NOT be afraid of spiders” as an addendum. Up the path, over steaming sulfur pots and geologic marvels, sits Waystop. It’s a rambling stone one-story house surrounded by plants from every part of the Cosmere, some moving more freely than the wind warrants. The smells of baked goods and the days supper drift on the breeze, tantalizing anyone who happens to pass by. Spiders merrily spin webs in the corners and on anything that holds still for too long, and steam bubbles from the roof of a bathhouse. Welcome, Worldhopper, to Waystop. (Rooms and etc will be added as needed) Proprietors Yzabet Montegue (Yih-zah-bet Mawn-teh-gew) – HOSTESS and INSTRUCTOR Yzabet is the proprietress of Waystop and has run it for the past fifteen years. She is the cook, cleaning lady, gardener, investiture instructor, and general caretaker of the place. She keeps it all under control and uses the trained spiders that she breeds to make sure that everything is in order. Pallas Montegue (Palace Mawn-the-gew) – WORKING HAND Pallas helps his mother whenever she needs it, but can often be found reading in the library or creating the Cosmere’s first ever rock music. Long-Term Employees – Atticus – Security and Defense Contractor Mr. Amber – Chocolate Guru and Business Partner Current Visitors - Too many people for me to remember [PLEASE FORGIVE THE MESSY MAP. I stole it from the plans of an old folks home. Red is stuff that you can ignore (unless it is writing) green is trees, and blue are the hotsprings. Also marked in red are the outlines of the bathhouse and training grounds. Room prices are not yet listed, and neither is the price for Investiture training. Enjoy Waystop!]

  8. “Stop the car,” Kokichi said, and before Liam could respond, the van moved of its own volition. With an abrupt swerve, it pulled over to the side of the road in a dramatic cloud of dust that billowed up around the vehicle, mostly obscuring it. Liam turned to Kokichi, but they had already hopped out. Liam sighed. There wasn’t much he could do about this now, so he climbed out as well. He only caught the end of their conversation. “M-M-Mega—I mean, Melanie. I’m just. Um… just trying to get to the city.” That’s when Liam noticed the girl standing in front of Kokichi, dirty and weary. Melanie? The name echoed in his head, bringing back painful memories a decade old. He caught himself staring, and promptly looked away. Her hair was too blond to be Melanie, and she was too young as well. It’s not Melanie. His own name broke him from his reverie. “—and that guy is Liam,” Kokichi was saying, “We’re besties. Want to be my bestie too?” As before, little floating cues hovered around Kokichi as they spoke, but Liam didn’t pay attention to them. His focus was on the newcomer. Though dirty and worn, there was something in her eyes. He couldn’t quite place his finger on it, but there was an… aura? Around this girl. There were things that she wasn’t letting on. Liam took the opportunity step forward. “Hold on a moment, Kokichi. I’d like to know more about you… Melanie, if you are going to be joining us. Something more than your name and destination.”

  14. Introduction With the recent Idaho signing I know that a lot of us have had our heads spinning over that 'Pre-shattering Weapon' WoB, especially in how it relates to Hoid. After listening to the related Shardcast episode I left with a few takeaways from the conversation the crew had that I wanted to share with you all. Before I get in to this, I want to warn you all that at its core, this theory is crackpot. I think I've made a lot of interesting connections but at this point we just don't have enough information on the related topics to make reasonable conclusions. With that in mind, strap in cause this is a long one! The Case For Aluminum As was discussed in the Shardcast, my hypothesis is that Aluminum is the remnant of the weapon used to destroy Adonalsium. It simply makes sense when you deduce things. To defend yourself from a seemingly all powerful being who's essence was the basis of all things and who you were deeply Connected to, it seems reasonable that the first step would be to stop that being from detecting you, manipulating you, or influencing you in any way which just so happens to be the primary passive effect of Aluminum. Having made this conclusion, lets take a step back. If the weapon used to kill Adonalsium is now expended and not in its original from, Aluminum itself cannot be the weapon and its properties may not be the same as its theoretical original form, so we're kind of missing a crucial puzzle piece. This is about as far as any of my theories pre-Idaho got, but the extra clue of how it relates to Hoid's power got me interested enough to dig deeper. The Realmatic Effects of Aluminum After hitting this dead end, the next step towards understanding what this illusive weapon is came in finding what other things in the Cosmere seem to share properties with Aluminum. After thinking about it for awhile, I began thinking about Allomantic Aluminum. Despite it's inert properties, it is somehow able to provide a magical, investiture related effect. Digging a little bit deeper, I remembered this WoB: Thinking this kind of sounded familiar I remembered this scene in Oathbringer: I was just as stumped as Venli was until making the connection that Timbre also happened to be a Spren existentially linked to metal, it being the essence linked to Venli's assumed order. Both Timbre and Aluminum seem to be able to, as Brandon described the latter's effects "[clense] the spirit of unwanted effects of other Investitures". Seeing as how the only thing aluminum and Timbre share in common is this whole idea of metallic properties, I began thinking about what other phenomenon in the Cosmere relate to metals, and naturally I shifted my focus on Scadrial. The Link To Godmetal With all these new ideas and connections in my head I began thinking about how metals may be used in the defeat of a Shard-level being and immediately things started making sense. In the Mistborn series, there has been a clear theme in what is being used to combat Shards/Spiritual beings on that planet: Godmetals. While regular metals, tied to the magic, investiture, and essence of the planet, can be used to blind Shards; this seemingly Scadrial specific effect is nothing compared to a power that transcends the Metallic Arts and the resident Shardworld, Godmetals. As seen when Sazed encounters Trellium, they can directly act as a weapon against a Shard-level being, a property necessary for any weapon that has a chance at defeating Adonalsium, but there is an even more interesting example that I believe ties this whole thing together. Something I never really thought of was how peculiar it was that Ruin had no ability to sense or interact with Atium directly, something seemingly made out of his own power. It was completely dark to him, the plot of the whole third book even revolves around how he needs it to defeat Preservation. Haven't we also seen this effect of an un-sensable metal elsewhere... Conclusion Looking at all these connections, it seems so natural and obvious. The exact kind of long term, hail mary twist Brandon likes to pull on us. I believe that pre-shattering, Aluminum was Adonalsium's godmetal. A piece of his essence that he couldn't find, touch, or manipulate from the spiritual realm but had power within the physical one, a power that could be stolen and manipulated against a being that encompassed all of reality as was the case for Ati. For gods sake, the title of the series where all this is taking place even alludes to a metal with magical properties. The fact that Adonalsium is now dead and shattered could explain why this hypothetical godmetal has become inert and lost its magical properties. Afterthoughts So this is as good an educated guess as I can make on this topic. I probably left a few loose ends lying around in the theory but I'm writing this one a bit more fast and loose than i typically do due to its nature as a pretty speculative crackpot so feel free to press me on those. I'm interested in what you all have to say, if you have any ideas drop a comment. Have a good day y'all!

  15. Want sure if this should go in here or general. Anyway what you do here is take a quote from a movie or tv show and Cosmere it. 1. It has to be said by some one so who in the Cosmere would say it. 2. Try and change the existing quote in some way. 3. If you can also put the Cosmere name for the movie. "Why is the wine gone? Why is the wine alwase gone?" -Dalinar (Pirates of the Reshi isle: curse of the black light) "Nivani?" "What?" "Where is my shard plate?" "What" "Where, is, my, shard plate? "I uh, put it away." "Where?" "Why do you need to know?" "I need it!" "Nah uh, don't you think about going off doing no daring do. We've been playing this wedding for two months!" "Alithkar's in danger!" "My wedding is in danger! "You tell me where my plate is woman! We're talking about the greater good!" "Greater good? I am your to be wife! I amthe greatest good you're ever gana get!" -Dalinar and Navani kholin (The impendabes)

  16. Hello everyone, I'm here for a few weeks now and I've already read all Cosmere books - Mistborn, Stormlight Archive, Elantris, Warbreaker, Arcanum Unbounded and White Sand as graphic novel - I want to read White Sand novel draft right now. I have to make some break with reading right now to come back to living - shardcast don't make it easier. And I'm thinking about reading other Brandon Sanderson books.

  20. His hand is just outstretching when he hears the rattle and roar of something outside. It's still hanging there when the gates are opened, and a man in full Shardplate walks in. Behind him, a large metal creature has touched down. It alone makes his pulse stop, and he begins describing them in his copperminds, annotating the names. It's like a ship from Southern Scadrial, but made of metal. The man in Plate nods at them, apparently unfazed by his appearance, and greets someone. Probably a Feruchemist, judging from the features. "A Plate is not. It is... wrong." It was shaped differently, to be sure. So they had some form of Shardbearer, and a Feruchemist. And they didn't seem bothered by newcomers, so it was probably a place used to worldhoppers too. But it wasn't part of any of his records, despite being seemingly well populated. And that ship... "I'm sorry," Alum says. "What in Almighty's tenth name is going on here?"

  22. Near the End of 16 Year Peace Ski finished off her training exercise with a flourish, sweat streaming down her face se gasped for breath. She had long outgrown minders while she trained, and preferred to do it by herself. retracting her crystal sword she strapped the hilt to her belt and walked outside towards her uncle, who sat on a bench under a tree. Waving Ski ran towards him. "Hey Uncle! You know I've turned 16 a couple months ago, and you promised to take me to this mysterious 'Alleyverse' when I was 16. So when shall we go?" Ine Amber was regarded as slightly crazy by everyone Ski knew, mostly because of his interesting views on science, and because of his belief in a place called the Alleyverse. Ski believed his stories when she was younger, but now her belief hung on one thing. The fact that he promised to take her there when she was 16. The longer she was 16 and her uncle didn't take her, the less she believed him. "Taking you to the Alleyverse is not like taking you to the store, or even to the Hushlands, Ski. It is taking you to a place where whole new physical laws apply, and investure is the main power. But you are right. I said we would go when you are 16, and yes, you have been 16 for a while." He trailed off, thinking. "So....are you going to finally take me to where you say I was born?" The stories her uncle told her mostly involved what happened to her parents and why Uncle Amber took her to the Free Kingdoms. "You were born here, in the Free Kingdoms Ski. You know that. You were raised, on the other hand, in the Alleyverse for your first year of life. The reason I brought you back, was because of the war." "Yes, I know about the war that the "Ghostbloods" started." Ski said, doing air quotations around the word "Ghostbloods". "I have told you about them many times, yet you don't seem to understand that they are as real as you and me, and if we go to the Alleyverse, you will meet them." "If they are real, I will kill them uncle. And don't say that I can't, I am one of the greatest Knights of Crystalia ever!" "You are very naive. But the only way to cure that is through experience. Go and tell your instructors that we are leaving for a while, and that we might not come back. Tonight I will give you some more information about the Alleyverse, and then we will go." "Really!" Ski squealed. "You are entirely to excited and not cautious enough." "Whatever uncle. I'll be right back." Knowing that they would finally be leaving to the Alleyverse seemed to rekindle her belief in the place. Strange. "You'd think that becoming a knight and battling librarians for 6 years would make you more serious." Mr. Amber muttered. That evening. "The first thing you need to know is that nearly everyone you see there is part of a guild. The main ones are the DA, TUBA, Black Crusade, Liebrary.... "Library! Why haven't you destroyed them." "You can't just destroy a guild. They are very powerful and document history. They don't keep everyone in ignorance because there isn't much they can hide besides their own secrets. Now don't interrupt. Those are the most powerful guilds, although there are smaller ones that include members from all of these guilds." Amber handed Ski a book. "This book---now don't look at me like that, it's not evil---has details about the guilds. The next thing you need to know is that magic is extremely common in the Alleyverse. All sorts of magic which are too varied to go into at the moment. They are very different from the types of magic you know, so be on guard." "All right, what are we going to do there?" "I am going to open a chocolate shop. You on the other hand will explore and learn about this new world. Hopefully neither of us will die. Now lets leave." With that Mr. Amber and Ski left the building, entered the black glass car, and drove to a remote location near a river. "Now stay here." Mr Amber ordered as he got out of the car. Pulling a small fabrial from his suit he flipped a switch and the ground slid apart, revealing a small perpendicularity. "Whawasthat!" Ski shrieked as Mr. Amber got back into the car. "A form of technology you will get very familiar with in the Alleyverse." He calmly replied. Gesturing forward the car sped into the swirling pool and vanished. In Shadesmar, a black car exploded from the ocean of spheres and drove onto a narrow strip of land. Mr. Amber flipped a switch on the inside of his car and it transformed from Free Kingdom technology to a fabrial powered car. "Stormlight is the easiest fuel source here. Even easier than sand." Glancing over, Mr. Amber saw Ski's face. She was completely stunned and speechless, simply watching the strange land outside. Sighing he flipped another switch which made the car start to glow. An enormous flash followed and the car was back into the physical realm, this time of the Alleyverse.

  24. I remember the guy. Usually, I'd say what happened in Astoria should stay in Astoria, but he should be okay. He can go find himself a new supporting cast even. On the note of learning new power applications over time, that can indeed be really fun. Super powers especially can have a lot of applications, just because their very nature breaks the rules of what’s usually possible.

  25. The girl was nervous and more than a little bit awkward. Her eyes were sky blue, but they had to struggle to catch a glimpse of them. She wore a pale peach sweater over a warm brown t-shirt with a print, along with a jade green skirt. Beneath the mix of dirt and twigs, she looked uninjured. Another Epic? She didn’t seem to have the same sort of swagger both Kokichi and other Epics had, but she was obviously pretty tough. Otherwise she’d be covered in tons of scars, or, at the very least, wrinkles caused by stress. Though she was shy, she didn’t seem to be scared of them. Then again, Kokichi wasn’t exactly an intimidating figure what with their all over the place attitude and crazy rainbow colors. Nothing like Nighthound (RIP), Steelheart (Also RIP), or even Crimson (Ditto). Those guys were super intimidating. And super dead. They’d made tons of enemies. “Uh...” she stalled, taking them in. “M-M-Mega- I mean, Melanie. I’m just. Um... just trying to get to the city.” Mega, but then Melanie? Maybe a new nickname. She was staring at her feet, which were covered in rather decent looking shoes. “Rad, so are we! I’m Kokichi, the drifting nonbinary agent of chaos probably feared across the land, and that guy is Liam. We’re besties. Wanna be my bestie too?” They didn’t mention the whole ‘murder mission’ dealio because honestly, asking a stranger to go kill someone with them right off the back would be rude. That came after sharing tragic backstories. Speaking of which, they’d never gotten the full story from Liam. Maybe they’d get to see to it in full after Mega Melanie the Potential Third Bestie shared. If she accepted, anyway. But she probably would cuz she looked cool, and Kokichi wanted her to. They/them pronouns only popped up next to their head again, along with a message informing her that they weren’t actually feared anywhere. (Which was sorta a complete and total lie, but it was a funny one. Stories of past murder came after murderifying someone for your besties. Not in the beginning.) An arrow pointed at Liam labeling him Liam. They spotted a butterfly out of the corner of their eyes. It was orange and black. A monarch, reminded a distant memory. They pushed the thought away, to the back corner of their mind. Something else, something else... Right. Murder quest. Murder quests were fun.

  26. For me it is stronger that Kaladin didn't swear the Fourth Ideal than if he did. I wanted it so much, but it is just so human. Even if he knows these words he isn't ready to say it. There is a difference between knowing something and accepting it. He lost so many people he cared about. He have to deal with it. To accept it. To forgive himself. It's like Lirin said - You can't protect everyone, you have to let it go. For every surgeon or any other physician it is very important to learn that people die. That you can't save everyone. And I think that Kaladin refuses to admit that Lirin was right. And those who he lost - of course he could just swear Fourth Ideal but what about grief? If you lost someone in real life time is needed to cure you. Even if someone tells you - it's time to deal with it - maybe sometimes it helps, but most of the time it won't work. Sometimes little things will make difference - like just that someone is near you someone that you could count on like Bridge Four for Kaladin. And sometimes it is better when you lose than when you win like when he can't swear the Fourh Ideal. And there is this thing that Kaladin said to Theft when he swore Third Ideal - That it won't make any difference, that it won't solve all problems. That you have to deal with your dark side anyway. I don't think he didn't grow in Oathbirnger - he knows that he can rely on other people, that he isn't alone any more, that he can make mistakes, that even if he won't make right choices it could end well anyway. And that makes him stronger. And maybe he could deal with his problems and make decisions.

  27. I’ve been given the green light to run this game, and I’m at the top of the QF list so I’m going to try to get the rules formalized and ready to go so I can post sign ups in the next couple days. Thanks to @Drake Marshall and everyone else (I’m not sure who all helped, since it was all done anonymously in the google sheet, but thanks!) who helped put together the lists of murder methods and pieces of evidence. I have sorted through everything and filled out the lists where necessary and pruned and consolidated where necessary, and I’m pretty happy with where we stand, too. I also filled out all of the scene tiles and I’m happy with them, too. But if anyone wants to look things over and see if anything should be added or changed or deleted, feel free to do so here. The next step is to actually write out the rules and adapt them for forum use, and then to set up the spreadsheet and make it functional so we can randomize the “cards” and deal them to players.

Then she sat back down, saying, "Oh, I just thought I saw something come inside. Like a shadow or something." I immediately freaked out inside. So, there's that. But also: I remembered a guy I had known a couple years ago and I realized his last name was Rao.

  31. I am not sure whether Kaladin will swear the fourth oath at all now. We don't know what the oath would be and it might go against his principles. Compare to Chapter 86 epigraph: The old Knight Radiant seems to have been in a similar spot as Kaladin where he wasn't able to swear the Fourth Ideal. In Oathbringer it also got clear that the interpretation of the oaths depends strongly on perception of what is right and wrong and on keeping oaths. With Kaladin's surgeon apprentice background I see many conflicts if the Fourth Ideal goes against helping people, as somewhat implied in the epigraph. If the Fourth Ideal were "just" about accepting failures and getting up again, it would not be so difficult. Knowing the words and not saying then, Kaladin is assaulted by memories of loved ones he has lost. I suspect something of focussing on the living/the "greater good" and forgetting the dead / the individuals being in the Fouth Ideal and therefore very difficult for someone who wants to /has sworn to help anyone needing help (->surgeon). Although Kaladin has progressed from surgeon apprentice to Knight Radiant, his very core is helping people. If the Fourth Ideal is against that, Kaladin should well deny it. As we have seen now, not all about the Knights Radiant is good. Even strict adherence to oaths is not always good, it is just of Honor. For Kaladin's character development it could well be the best to say. "No, I cannot and I don't want to swear this Ideal. If you want me to progress, find another Ideal."

  32. As much as I loved Oathbringer, there is one aspect that left me feeling unfulfilled, and that is Kaladin’s character progression, or lack thereof. He's my favorite character so I am attentive and sensitive to his specific storyline. By the end of the book I felt that he had no growth, no successes, several failures, and little impact on the story overall. I thought he had a few nice moments with his family, Bridge Four, and Syl, and made some progress with his negative thought patterns and mental state, but these things seemed to have very little effect on his actions within the story. Note the results of his specific plot threads: Hearthstone (Fail/No Impact/Unresolved) Kaladin’s goal here was to warn and prepare the town for the everstorm. He arrived too late for that. Once he reached the citylord manor, the town residents had already organized themselves, injuries were treated, and they were as safe as could be expected in the circumstance. He left to search for the parshmen with the promise to return at a later time. By the end of the book Alethkar had been taken over by voidbringers and the Alethi are captured or taking refuge in other countries. Kaladin never returned to check on his family and we don’t know their current status. Parshmen (Fail/Unresolved) Kaladin spent most of Part 1 traveling with the parshmen. He befriended them and taught them basic survival skills. This sets up an interesting dilemma for him. He feels empathy with these people and begins to question the “us and them” mentality, who the real enemies are, and the distinction between untransformed parshmen/former slaves vs. fused/voidforms/agents of Odium. He abruptly flies away from his friendly parshmen at the end of Part 1 and we never fully revisit this issue. He had one argument with Jasnah in Part 2, but otherwise there is no resolution or further discussion about how to handle the parshmen or the human prisoners left in pens in Alethkar. Additionally, Kaladin’s band of friendly parshmen became Moash’s team and participated in the king’s assassination and overtaking the palace. Kholinar (Fail) The objective here was to rescue the queen and prince and open the oathgate so the Alethi troops could retake Kholinar. Turns out that Aesudan is hosting an unmade, Gavinor is taken by the enemy, Elhokar is dead, the palace and Kholinar are lost, Kaladin goes catatonic while watching his men kill each other, the oathgate is inhabited by another unmade, and our four surviving heroes end up trapped in Shadesmar. Kaladin’s squires were left behind, and they were the ones to rescue Gavinor and bring him to safety, a task Elhokar has specifically assigned to Kaladin. Protect Dalinar (Fail/Low Impact) Kaladin’s time in Shadesmar primarily revolves around the vision of Dalinar with nine shadows and his strong sense of urgency to get to Thaylen City to protect Dalinar. They arrive at the Thaylen City oathgate to find it guarded by fused. Kaladin tries to distract them, but ultimately runs out of stormlight and falls into the sea of beads, where he is rescued by Syl. They are finally saved by Dalinar’s perpendicularity, which happens after his confrontation with Odium. Kaladin played no part in that fight, so his vision had no real purpose or payoff. He later distracts the fused as Dalinar confronts Nergaoul, but Kaladin had very little impact on that fight. Probably any member of Bridge Four could have filled this role for Dalinar. Fourth Ideal (Fail) Several scenes in the book seem to foreshadow Kaladin’s speaking the fourth ideal. This includes the wind-shield scene in Part 1 and the wind spren forming around him in Shadesmar. In part 5, he finally gets to the point where he knows the words and tries to speak them, but he cannot bring himself to do it. He breaks down in tears and is comforted by Syl, resulting in the biggest let-down moment of the entire book (for me). Compare this to Teft, who has apparently said three ideals in the same book and is now at the same level as Kaladin. Amaram (Fail) Amaram has been Kaladin's arch nemesis since Book 1 Chapter 1. A final confrontation between the two of them has been overshadowing Kaladin’s story for three books, and as a reader I have been anxiously awaiting it. We finally get to it in Part 5. Not only is he confronting Amaram, he is also confronting an unmade, Yelig-nar (Blightwind). The symmetry of having Shallan confront Re-Shephir, Dalinar confront Nergaoul, and Kaladin confront Yelig-nar in the same book seems so perfect. Each of these unmade have a resonance with their respective orders and personalities. Well, Kaladin fails again here. He runs out of stormlight and is nearly killed by Amaram/Yelig-nar, only to be rescued in the last minute by Rock, who makes the killing blow. Shallan (Fail/No impact) The weird love triangle. The entire purpose of this sub-plot seems to have been to highlight Shallan’s multiple personas. One of them likes Adolin, one of them likes Kaladin, they other one is just confused. In the end, Shallan determines that Veil, the persona who likes Kaladin, has bad taste in men. Shallan does not realize that these personalities are all part of her and that these are her own thoughts and feelings. She has no growth from this situation and she seems to be worse off at the end of the book than when she started. Kaladin also has no growth from it. The Helaran discussion did not come up at all. This whole arc seems to have had very little impact on the story or characters. Mental Issues (Progress/No Impact/Unresolved) This is one area that Kaladin seems to have made some progress. Unfortunately, none of this progress seemed to have any positive effect on the events of the story. He stepped up as a radiant and stopped hiding. His attitude towards lighteyes was greatly improved, to the point that he became friends with a group of lighteyed soldiers whose deaths he later mourned. He did not flinch when referred to as “Brightlord.” When he felt himself slipping into a dark place after the Kholinar catastrophe, he reflected on his depression, determined that it was illogical, and talked to Shallan about how she stays positive. These are big steps for him and I would have loved to see him be extra-awesome as a result of these positive changes. Instead, his actions and failures all seem to be ruled by his primary unresolved issue, which is guilt and grief over the people he failed to protect. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I find it odd that one of the main protagonists of the series would spend an entire 1200+ page book with very little growth, impact or resolution, so perhaps I am missing something important. Did others feel this way, or do you think he made progress as a character? Was he put on hold to be continued at a later date due to the vast amount of material in this book? Is the lack of forward momentum part of his development? Why would he go stagnant at a time where he is embracing his radiant-ness? Are all of these failures tied to his Fourth Ideal in some way? I want to find the progression for his character in this book, and I’m not sure what it is.

  33. George Lucas Open on Kaladin, staring out at the battlefield. It is littered with both soldiers and Parshendi corpses. He stands alone in his vest and trousers, an unreadable expression on his face. KALADIN: Dead. All of them….dead. Half of Bridge Four is gone, because of me. Sylphrena floats up to him, a ribbon of light, before assuming the form of a young girl. SYL: Not-so, Mistah Kaladeen, sah! You-sa still have meesa! KALADIN: Uh, Syl? Why are you talking like that? You didn't talk like that in the last book. SYL: Mistah Lucas thought it'd be better for the KIDS! You-sa knows he loves dee children! KALADIN: Excuse me, Syl. SYL: Where-sa you-sa going, Kaladeen? KALADIN: To find the nearest chasm. J.K. Rowling Dalinarbledore gripped Kaladin's shoulders, meeting his eyes. "Don't you see, Kaladin? You are the Chosen One. Of all the Radiants at this school, you alone can unite the Sprenly Hallows and defeat Voidemort!" Kaladin looked away from Dalinarbledore's eyes, which always made him feel as though he were being X-rayed. "But….this doesn't make sense." "Of course it does. Voidemort chose you as his equal, which is why you can fly and do all of those amazing things." "But wouldn't I have been able to do that anyway, being a Windrunner and all? And while we're at it, why did I get Windrunning while Shalmione got Lightweaving? I mean, seriously, why are there differences in our magic, anyway?" "Because it's magic. Duh." Just then, Professor Sadeas walked by, scowling at Dalinarbledore. "You're smiling, Professor. Ten points from Gryffindor." "I outrank you, Sadeas." "Fine. Ten points to Slytherin, because I have better fashion sense." George R. R. Martin Sigzil stood alone on the battlefield. Around him lay the broken bodies of Bridge Four, Dalinar's warcamp, Sebarial's warcamp, and the entire customer base of a random tavern. "Looks like it falls upon me, then," he sighed. "I alone must carry this narrative to the end. And I shall. I shall." The arrow struck his heart from an unknown source, and there he died. Stephanie Meyer Pattern buzzed in deep chagrin. "Shallan?" "What?" "I know that your sketches are important….but shouldn't you be working on keeping the parshmen from destroying the world?" "In a minute," she said, chagrined. "Shallan, you have already made 499 sketches of Adolin Kholin's abdominal muscles." "And this will be an even 500." Just as she finished the sketch and held it to the light for a moment's admiration, the door swung open. Her chagrin was quickly replaced by delight. "Shallan," Kaladin breathed. "I'm sorry for intruding on you like this, but I had to see you. I didn't have time to put on a shirt. I hope you don't mind." Pattern's chagrined buzzing began anew, but Shallan ignored it. When the Almighty sent you a shirtless Captain, you didn't ask for details.

  34. @Extesian pls spoiler that Wob it's a huuuge mistborn spoiler and this is a stormlight sub. Some might have not read mistborn But yeah kinda agree if it was a demigod child then the mix sprens are probably those and there was a Wob about sapient children of shards have some effect on them. But not in a Greek/roman mythology sense where it has half the shard power or something like shardlike But any creation of a shard is their children so basically scadrians are the children of ruin and preservation. A shard would even call anybody who lives or practices their intent as their children so they could be also that

  35. Liam interrupted as he stepped out of the van before Mega-Melanie actually responded. Which was pretty rude. “Hold on a moment, Kokichi. I’d like to know more about you… Melanie, if you are going to be joining us. Something more than your name and destination.” They shot him an annoyed glare and were about to explain what he was doing wrong, but she didn’t seem to mind, responding to the interrogation positively. She smiled at Kokichi, nervously, but optimistically. They could see the gears ticking in her head, literally. As she came to a hesitant conclusion, the dirt fell off of her, vanishing into the void, while her hair returned to what they assumed was normal. Sometimes their powers did strange things. Without thinking about it, they combed their fingers through their hair like he’d done once, color fading ever so slightly at the ghostly touch. Once they realized what they were doing, they quickly shoved their hands in their pockets. Quickly, but not too quickly. Speedy enough to be quirky, not unusual. Not scared. They did such a good job at acting like the gesture was a routine quirk, they convinced themselves. Probably. “Sorry, my name's actually Megan,” she said. That didn’t feel like a lie and it made sense. Mega-Melanie was a very strange name, after all. “I just wasn't sure if I should give it to someone I just met. I'm trying to find someone, my sister. Last she was seen it was heading into Alberta somewhere and Edmonton seemed like an easier place to start looking. Have you seen her? Or heard anything about her? She looks just like me, or well she did anyway." Crystal tears dripped from her blue eyes one curling down her cheek before falling off. It shone like a diamond in the faint light. Pieces of her hair stuck out, from the pain instead of from tangles. The shadows in the folds of her clothes grew pronounced, the colors less intense yet still bright. There were fewer highlights, but the ones that remained were sharper. A sister. Kokichi wondered what it’d be like to have a sister. Probably sad. If they’d had one, she’d be dead now for sure. Their family was dead, had been since long before Calamity. They didn’t mind. They had a new family. Liam was a friend, but he could be upgraded to family after they got to know each other a bit more. Now this Megan girl, in search of old family. Maybe if they went on enough quests, murder and fetch, together, they’d be a new friend group strong enough to be called family! It’d happened before. Course, they’d all died too, but whatevs. “Let’s find her, then. We’ve got a mission and the more help, the better. Trust me, it’s going to be so totally awesome.”

  41. All the talk of the dead spren, mentioning the word "deadeye" over and over, made my mind go off in interesting directions. "The Knights Radiant?" Lukaren asked. "An ancient order," Master Khonobi said in a solemn tone. "They once kept peace throughout the Cosmere, wielding mighty Shardblades and the power of the Investiture." "The Investiture? What's that?" "A force that permeates all things, and binds the Cosmere together." Lukaren blinked, slowly digesting this new information. "And you say my father was one of these... Knights Radiant?" "Anekal was one of the greatest of their number," Master Khonobi nodded, "until he was destroyed by the evil Darth Sader, a fallen Radiant who was seduced by the Voidish side of the Investiture, to become what is known as a Deadeye Knight..."

  43. For killing a Shardbearer who was attacking his commanding officer and had just slaughtered his men? Someone who he had no idea who they were, let alone that he'd ever know anyone who knew them personally? I can see an apology for the lie in the chasms. For hiding what he'd done, even if it was a habit. But an apology for the act? I disagree.

  44. Good call, @Silk! So, as we continue to spitball (all tentative of course, change at will), and trying to get Silk's ideas into a format: Title: Critique Groups and Echo Chambers: Making Sure You're Actually Being Challenged (that's too long, surely. Someone help) Topic 1: Homogenity versus heterogeneity in group composition. What each brings to the table Q1: How did your critique group form and did the person in charge work to make sure it was diverse? Why or why not? (good place to address how hard it is to get anybody in a crit group that really will stay, so sometimes you take what you can get) Q2: What are the benefits of a homogenous group, whether in background or genre? Q3: What are the benefits of a heterogeneous group, whether in background or genre? Topic 2: The role of moderators in critique groups Q1: Does your group have a moderator? If so, what role do they serve? Q2: What role should a moderator serve in a critique group? Q3: How can moderators ensure marginalized voices are not drowned out? Topic 3: How to make sure your critique group enables a culture of diversity (and does not depend on the emotional labor of the marginalized writers) Q1: If your group is homogenous, how do you make space for marginalized writers? Q2: How do you attract and keep marginalized writers in a dominant culture group? Q3: What are common pitfalls you have seen in critique groups trying to be inclusive? Topic 4: Allyship in critique groups- group roles in fostering inclusive environments Q1: What is the role of an ally in a critique group? Q2: Should members feel compelled to speak out against other critique members who are acting poorly? Q3: Maintaining the peace versus challenging bias- which is more important in a critique group? What if you lose members who are otherwise fantastic writers and contribute regularly, just because they are biased? Topic 5: Taking critiques that challenge your worldview and understanding Q1: How have you responded in the past to someone saying your work is biased? Do you regret your response? Q2: How should writers respond to critiques they don't agree with (in terms of being called biased)? Q3: For marginalized critiquers, what are the dangers to you in calling out bias? How do you expect people to respond versus how they actually respond? Topic 6: Personal notes - comments from the panel members about their personal journeys (I think this is a great way to end OR begin, with really personal 'this is how I was coming in, this is how I felt, this is how my time here changed me) Q1: How did you first get involved with a critique group? What was it's composition? Did that composition change over time and if so, how did that affect you and your writing? YES! But who has the graphical skills???

  45. Also, it may not have been as easy to spy on Jasnah as the others just from a location standpoint. What we have seen of her is that Jasnah was spending most of her time in Libraries in various cities, and specifically the Pallaneum in Kharbranth and its Hospital. Both Hospitals and Libraries tend to have pretty solid pest control measures in place to protect their wards. It may not have been possible to infiltrate using cremlings or other small organisms to observe her. Add that to her apparent death and subsequent jaunt into Shadesmar (we have no idea how well the Sleepless are able to view the other realms, if at all) resulting in her not being on the Shattered plains where the world changing action was taking place... I think those all added together are what relegated her to minor player. The big four all ended up on the plains, however briefly, and all were there when everything changed. I think that more than anything is why she is not yet getting much attention from the sleepless.

This one makes a skyeel fly, That one shows up when you die. Oh what a lot of spren I spy! You have light in your spheres, You have shards in your hand, You have surges to help you to fly and to land! So where will you go? Somewhere high? Somewhere low? To the great Reshi Isles, or somewhere with snow? Perhaps you will dine on some Horneater Stew, Delivered directly through Urithiru. Or maybe the Shin will sell you a chicken (eating it helps Thaylen eyebrows to thicken). There’s so many places and people and spren, It’s easy to wonder just where your path ends. But please, don’t forget, it’s the way that you walk that matters much more than the place that you stop. Yes, the road that you take, whether straight, curved, or bendy always matters the most—just ask the Parshendi.
