  6. For me the triangle was about which path Shallan will choose. Either Kaladin encouraging her hiding and pushing away her emotions and memories or Adolin encouraging her to confront her problems. And for me her decision between the two men was also a decision which path she then follows. So all in all I hope this is over and she'll get her marriage to work.

  9. Ironically, my birthday is at the end of the month... I'll have to be careful with these powers, since you've had a Foretelling... > 3 > Granted. Power flows into you, and your consciousness begins to expand as your body convers from matter to pure, radiant energy. You feel your mind blossoming with knowledge, with power, with understanding. With this comes an awareness of your planet. Then your solar system. Then the neighbouring stars.... Wait, what? This isn't right. Your consciousness continues to grow outwards. You become aware of asteroids and comets drifting through the void of space, of other suns, moons, and black holes that try to suck in your very essence as you pass them by. Soon, you can sense everything in the Milky Way, every star and nebula, but it's already becoming a jumble, impossible to distinguish planets from solar systems, let alone anything smaller. And still your consciousness expands. Beyond the spirals of the Milky Way, you soon feel the edges of neighbouring galaxies, your understanding spanning light years upon light years, sensing supernovas explode as faint pops in the wave of knowledge that continues to crash against your mind. Soon, galaxies become as clustered as solar systems, then an indistinct jumble of sensation and understanding as the entire universe becomes open to you. Everything is so tightly packed though, that you can barely even attempt to pick apart, like trying to see an atom with a magnifying glass. And then, suddenly, it stops. You feel a wall of... something, that your consciousness pushes against. It feels incredibly solid, yet fluid at the same time, swirling around your mind.... And then you seem to slip through, and pop into existence... somewhere else. You've ended up in the Macroverse, our own universe a Microverse that now to you seems to exist in the space between neurons. And you without a microscope... You can still sense it, but only faintly, and perhaps with a few billion millenia you'll be able to sort out any kind of proper, distinct galaxy or star system. But who knows? You now exist in the largest scale it's possible to be, and you have a whole new universe to explore. Enjoy figuring out the rules of reality for the Macroverse, Shard of Understanding. I wish to be able to walk up walls and on ceilings as I pleased ^^

  13. I have seen many threads on this and I thought I should ad mine to theirs. However , my theory is indirect sources is really coming at it from. Different angle. Who is the 3rd Bondsmith spren? i have just finished words of radiance for the third time. As Brandon changed the ending I wanted to see if there were any other changes . So I either missed all this before, or it wasn’t there. Szeth says Aboshi is the name of the spren of the mountains. He calls Nale by this title as he sees the Herald is akin to a god. The three Mega spren were on Roshar before the shards came. The Stormfather, The nightwatcher , and the sibling. Most of my basis revolves around Szeth, with a few lines of shallan and one of Eshonai. Eshonai during her transformation. And said once you were a friend . This details the time before the shards cane Szeth has been Urithiru twice since being name truthless. He blatantly says the city of Urithiru is the only place where stone is not cursed . This is where I believe the Stone spren set aside an area for humans to walk on . But why would Szeth come to Urithiru? Simple he cane to see if he was really truthless. He wanted to see for hisself if the Knights Radiant had returned. After he fought with Kaladin the first time he went there again. Nope no Radiants Kaladin must be lying . When shallan activated the Oathgate. Szeth was fighting Kaladin . Szeth saw the beam of light and said i have seen this before! They went to city didn’t they! Where could Szeth have seen an Osthgate operate? The only blades that could open an Osthgate are the Radiant blades which no one had, and the honorblades. So someone in Shinovsr used an honorblade to go to Urithiru . My guess a stone shaman went there to converse with Aboshi only to find he is still slumbering . So what cause him ( the sibling ) to withdraw? Shallan says that shattered plains were not always shattered! This much damage to stone cause the Stone spren to slumber. So in my opinion the Stone Spren is the Spren of the planet of Roshar. All the stone of the planet is Holy to the Shin. They will not walk on it as they believe it is a god in the same manner as the Stormfather is a god to humans . As there are many mountains of stone . It is another explanation of why Stormfather said leave them alone, you have hurt them enough. Mining stone , building castles of stone, and shattering the shattered plains. In order to wake the sibling I think the shattered plains needs to be restored . Seems like an impossible job ? The Surges of Adhesion and Tension are made to heal stone . The Stormfather told Dalinar “ what u did in Thaylan is a pittance of what u can really do . No Radiants powers are greater than your own! We all looked for the 3rd Bondsmith spren . We assumed in error that it just hasn’t been introduced yet but that is not Sanderson Style. He foreshadow major plot lines all the time. Since the first chapter of WoK she has spoken about how holy stone was. None of us thought to ask how or why is stone holy. I don’t know who will bond Aboshi , but I really hope it’s Navani . With her the possibilities are endless . Thoughts?

  18. This is exactly how I feel. Adolin, even though he doesn't get it completely, understands Shallan and wants to help her. He is willing to help her solve her problems. Kaladin loved the fact that Shallan could do the one thing he was having problems with: pushing aside emotions and pain. Except, that's Shallan's whole problem. She pushes aside her pain in order to not have to think about it, but that only makes the problem worse. If Shallan and Kaladin had ended up together, they would've just exacerbated each other's problems and Shallan would've gone done a much worse path than she went down in OB. Getting married to Adolin wasn't the perfect solution, but I'd much rather read her work to make their marriage work (a much more compelling story, imo) than read a continuous downward spiral as her mental health gets worse and worse. That's why I felt satisfied with the love triangle's resolution. Do I think the love triangle could've been handled better? Yes. But the resolution was what was needed for Shallan, even if getting married was a bit hasty.

  20. Just taking this a step further. Thou and you are actually the same word and were originally pronounced the same way. We no longer use the "thorn" character þ (which looks a lot more like a y in some typefaces), but it is the English/Latin character for the th sound. When you see "Ye Olde Shoppe" its actually a remnant of the thorn character, not a Y, at the beginning and thus the proper pronunciation is "The Old Shop," not, as is commonly said, "Yee Old Shop."

MR30: Cycle 2 - Rime of the Ancient Starfarer The ship was cleared, the cargo seared As hast’ly each one dropped Below the ship, into the rift And down into the top Of transports three, and one of three, The Pride of Terris, flew Away from wrack and ruin dread, And yet, within its flue A corpse was found, blood on the ground Pooling beneath its toes. The captain dead! and many said, “We are pursued by foes. “Even here in this small transport An evil may be seen. The evil swiftly drew away Its work at present done. The Pride of Terris still flew on And drew near to a sun. Bright light did fill the windowsill And in that light, they saw Hyena slumped, curled in a lump With rigid back and jaw. The crew did stare at this nightmare With silent, bated breath. When all at once the crew did speak And clamored for a death. And as they spake, an Albatross As if sent from above Appeared, and did begin to speak Of patience and of love. “No lynch today!” it tried to say, “Why would you kill me yet? A bird of good to help you should An evil e’er be met.” The crew did boo, and shouted too, With no heed for his words. Four then advanced, nor backward glanced While moving towards the bird. 25. Aboshi seems more like an honorific to me. Shin culture seems to be full of them. This is an interesting point, I think you may be on to something. It could be Urithiru was not forbidden to the original humans as it was the domain of one of the great spren, so it was accepted both humans and Singers were welcome there. Or maybe it is as simple as knowledge from two different times mixing up to create a single cultural idea: Stone can't be walked on as it is meant for Singers + Urithiru is a refuge to go to during Desolations = stone can't be walked on, but Urithiru is acceptable from Shin perspective. Syl explains that spren are not like humans who have a soul that is lost when they are "broken". She was quite specific that splitting a stone changes the state but it is still stone and intact. I doubt stone spren would be bothered by castles or mining. The Shattered Plains may be dicier as its entirely possible what broke the SP caused spiritual damage. But if it were just physical damage I doubt the spren would care. I think Szeth just found Urithiru by chance when he was flying around, maybe he had a vague idea where it was. But in any case, he probably just went for the same reason someone might go to the Great Wall of China, its impressive and has historical significance. (Basically touristical reasons). At the end of the day Szeth is a solitary person, when needing to think his first pick would likely be somewhere that he can't be bothered. If there was a deeper meaning to Szeth going to Urithiru after fighting Kaladin, I think it may be that he was questioning his faith and the judgement of the Shin Shamans, so he went to the only place that the Shin accepted walking on Stone was not a sin to try to strengthen his faith. Much like someone questioning his faith might go to a church to pray hoping to find peace that puts the questions to their faith to rest. My view when I read that was that Szeth recognized the platform, not the beam of light itself. But I wouldn't discard the possibility that the Shin may ocassionally go to Urithiru with an Honorblade. I've wondered since finishing OB if Dalinar might fix the SP again, but I don't see a big relevant reason to do it. Except maybe showiness to show his powers, or maybe to make the journey from the camps to the oathgate a bit easier as they can skip crossing all the bridges. (Although just think what an ecosystem from the chasms that would destroy!).

  31. So, inspired by Lord Sanderson, I have been thinking up a specific system of magic. Well, honestly, I've thought of many because of him: he calls his genre "science fantasy," but my term for this kind of work is "transcendental fiction." The idea is that scifi = extensions of known laws of physics, fantasy = suspension of physics, transfi = alternate laws of physics/metaphysics. Which having Investiture alongside matter/energy fits with very well... Anyway, step 1 in this system of mine, for the sake of this thread, is a God-concept. In this world, God would be understood in terms of three primary attributes, M(ight) and K(nowledge) and G(race). Now, God exists as a full person per the order of the attributes. So there is a divine person = MKG, another = GKM, and so on, for 3! = 6 divine persons total (instead of 3 as in the Trinity). The idea is that God can be defined as ultimate power that defines Its own knowledge, which in turn defines Its grace, or as ultimate goodness implying ultimate wisdom and hence ultimate strength, etc. I don't have much else thought up for this system except that the following sequence of numbers would be relevant: 1! = 1 2! = 2 3! = 6 4! = 24 5! = 120 6! = 720 Also whether a hexagon or a hexahedron would be the typical geometrical symbol for the system, I haven't decided. Maybe there'd be a common emblem based on interposing the two (like a super-Star of David, if you will)?

But it's fun EDIT: it's saying "My life to yours, My breath become yours." and it's referencing Warbreaker, basically it makes me more powerful of an investiture holder.

  37. since in the cosmere matter, energy and investiture are the same stuff you could say that every realm is made up from it yes. But in RL we also distinguish between different types of energy and different forms of matter, so I guess in the Cosmere there should be a similar distinction. Since in the CR they trade stormlight aka one form of investiture without tangible form while being themselves splinters aka another form of investiture but with a tangible form that is touchable I would say the CR seems like a place were the differences between the states (matter, energy, investiture) become more vague. In the PR the distinction is stronger. Both forms of investiture are more intangible there.

Finally, Rashan rested his eyes on the enemy, who had been disguised as Kane as he stepped outside of the magical time-bubble and brought out his sword. "Funny," he said, taking one more step forward. "I rather liked the other guy. Was going to have a duel with him before he died. Now I'm left with you." Rashan cracked his knuckles. "But a man who wishes to die is a man who wishes to die, and I am the genie who's going to grant your wish."

  40. I have recently been doing some re-reading of the Stormlight Archive, and some new clues stood out to me about the nature of the third Bondsmith spren. So, naturally, I wrote a whole essay about it. Proceed at your own risk! I don't think I've seen this theory discussed before, but my apologies if it has been. (Also, it's late, so I don't promise coherency.) My theory is that The Sibling is a spren that is somehow related to or representative of the moons of Roshar, particularly Nomon. Further, I think the destruction of New Natanan and the Shattered Plains may have been what harmed The Sibling and caused it to “slumber.” Still reading? Ok, here’s why I think these things: The main basis for this theory comes from the scene in which Shallan, Adolin, and Bridge Four confront the Midnight Mother. During that confrontation, Shallan notes the artwork: This seems to be a depiction of all the spren that are capable of forming bonds with Radiants. That means that the first three spren Shallan describe are actually depictions of the Bondsmith spren. So we have a cloud of energy; that seems to obviously be the Stormfather. We have a woman in the shape of the tree; this could be the Nightwatcher. That leaves us with a man hovering before a blue disc. This description is uncannily similar to the end paper art we have of Ishar. (Here) You’ll note that the discs in the background definitely look like the three moons of Roshar, with the smaller Salas and Mishim on either side of Nomon. So, why is there a picture of Ishar and the moons next to depictions of the Radiant spren? My thought is that the moons must somehow be related to The Sibling. (Of course, the other argument is that these are not depictions of the Bondsmith spren, but actually of Honor and Cultivation. But does that make Ishar some secret shard? Did people view him as on a level equal to Honor and Cultivation? He does seem pretty insistent that he is a god right now. But still, I’m going to stick with the Bondsmith spren depiction idea for now.) Additional support for the idea that the moons are related to the third Bondsmith spren: I find it interesting that the Stormfather always refers to this sibling in the plural. This could be purely to obscure the gender. Or it could be because the spren represents multiple things, rather like a collective noun. In this case, we have a spren that represents the moon, and Roshar just so happens to have three of them. And further, it’s understandable why the Stormfather refers to this spren as his sibling, but why does everybody else seem to call it The Sibling? Sibling to what? In the epigraphs, even a former Radiant, who should have more knowledge about who/what the third spren is, refers to it as the Sibling, as if that’s the only name it goes by. If it’s just because it’s the sibling Bondsmith spren, then why do Radiants refer to the Stormfather by his unique name, but not the Sibling? I find it interesting that the Shin refer to the moons as the three sisters. And Wit, in his story of Nomon, refers to the relationships among the moons as siblings. Speaking of that story that Wit told (and Sigzil attempted to tell, unsuccessfully) If my theory is in any way right, and if there is any truth at all in Wit’s story, then it brings some interesting implications about the relationship between Nomon’s spren and the Natanatan people, maybe even giving a clue as to what happened to the Sibling. The story tells about how Mishim traded places with Tsa, a mortal, and Tsa conceived a child with Nomon. We know that the story alludes to the fact that Natanatans had Aimian blood in them. But I think it may also be a hint about the Sibling (assuming I’m right about the connection with Nomon). Interestingly, this story is the only other mention of siblings, besides the Sibling in Oathbringer. Also, purely coincidentally I’m sure, I find it interesting that the epigraphs about the Sibling begin in the chapter following Wit’s story. The story clearly establishes a connection between the people of Natanatan and Nomon. This could also imply that there’s a connection between the people of Natanatan and the Sibling. Perhaps the Sibling even originated or lived in Natanatan. Before I go any further, let’s go back to those epigraphs for a second. In them, the Elsecaller who is recording the memory seems to believe that the Sibling is withdrawing from the Radiants, not because it intended to or because the Radiants are no longer worthy, but because the cognitive reflection has changed. In other words, people are thinking about the Sibling differently, and so the Sibling has itself changed. We know that the kingdom of Natanatan was destroyed, and the Shattered Plains (once Stormseat, the capital of Natanatan) was, well, shattered. Perhaps it was this shattering and the loss of Natanatan that caused the harm to the Sibling, which caused it to withdraw. Perhaps because the people were no longer there, they were no longer thinking of the Sibling, causing it to “slumber.” Also, Wit ends his story with, Perhaps this is a reflection, again, of what happened to the Sibling. It learned of loss, somehow. The loss of Natanatan? Other Interesting Tidbits: In Way of Kings, Dalinar refers to Natanatan as the Granite Kingdom. I don’t really know if this is relevant, but stone is important on Roshar. Additionally, they were a people apparently known for building towers. Again, I think this strengthens the idea that the people of Natanatan were perhaps involved in the creation of the tower in Urithiru and also had some connection to the Sibling, which we suspect powers Urithiru. And, I find it curious that Oathbringer mentions that New Natanan was working with Dalinar, but we hear literally nothing about them: This seems fishy to me. I think those New Natanans are going to become important. And lastly, we have this little bit from an interlude, which has some interesting mythology surround the people of Natanatan. Well, the night is darkest is just before the rising of Nomon. Also, an Everstorm really helps to make things dark. Perhaps we need the people of New Natanatan to come back, to restore the Sibling and thus restore the tower. And this lengthy essay doesn’t even begin to get into possible connections with Aimia. Or what on earth Roshar Ishar is doing in that depiction of the moons in Urithiru. And, is there any significance to the son Tsa had, the son born to be a god?

If all or most of the Singers are in the Everstorm, then could a team be sent to Braize to mess stuff up there? Braize seems undefended, and there must be some tactical value to wrecking stuff over there. Can anything be done to a shardpool? Maybe Odium needs his to do what he does.

I think any sane person who sees a big man with railroad spikes in place of their eyes is gonna freeze with terror or probably die of terror. Before Sazed's final ascension Inquisitors were kinda like the enemy of the state and unstoppable killers even after Sazed's ascension Marsh was a figure of death. Sooo. Who shaves his head ? Is he that good at shaving that despite having only ironlines as sight he still can shave his head to perfection? Kandra ? Uhm him intimidating people into shaving his head ? Does he like soothe/riot the person all the time who he decided to shave his head ?(wouldn't that create some weirder mythology about him) Does he have a really really weird personal barber like adolin every century ?(like does he post an ad "Hiring: Personal barbers willing to shave anywhere. High pay is given") Does he ask Harmony and go "yo, Sazed it's shaving time" (yes Sazed is the Hero of Ages, yes he is the god of Scandrians, yes he is the most powerful person in Cosmere atm but knowing Sazed is he really the type to decline if you ask him to pick a shirt, "can you please make tea tnx" or shave a beard. Ok Sazed might actually be the only Shard where you are the servant and you can order him around) ? Yes. This is currently the most intriguing mystery of Cosmere for me.

They've spent all these books talking about Sammael, and how he's totally entrenched in Illian, and how he'll be better prepared than Rahvin in Andor... and then the Asha'man invasion just totally wrecks him. Trigger every gateway alarm weave in the city, making them all useless. A highly organized assault, carried out correctly. Dumai's wells was more impactful, since that was the introduction of the Asha'man, but I always like the contrast they brought with the Aes Sedai in terms of teamwork and efficacy in battle.
