  1. Last night I was watching LOTR. After the one scene, I turned to my friend and started talking about the Nazgûls. I talked for about one minute before they finally said, "I have no idea what you're talking about." Confused, I responded along the lines of, "They showed up one scene ago! You know, black hoods, armored horses. The mistwraiths!" You know you're a Sanderfan when you confuse Mistwraiths and Ringwraiths.

  3. I was gonna suggest scanning it, yeah. Personally, when I handwrite drafts, I typically just enter the changes as I go. But at that stage, I'm usually only making line edits. I'd be much more tempted to maintain the original somehow if I were doing significant revisions. Also, I am only just now seeing from Robinski's signature that we have a Facebook page. HOW DID I NOT NOTICE THIS BEFORE. In other news, hey, I finally managed to do some fiction writing last weekend! (I've been very bad at making time.) It was an utterly bizarre vignette that I'll almost certainly never do anything with, but hey, it was fun. Now I just need to see how many songs I can write before June 1st...

  5. Just for fun, I started plugging names in and seeeing what I got. Apparently, our favorite Windrunner and his spren are now part of a buddy comedy called Paladin and Sly, their adventure takes place on the planet Rosary and the Shattered Plains sequence is about avenging the death of King Gavel at the hands of the Parched, who killed him with extreme thirst and the terrifying assassin known as... 9. So 1st off I would like to say that I might be miss remembering things, so i apologies ahead of time. 2nd I apologies for my terrible spelling. With that being said, lets jump right in. While listening to some shardcasts I remember someone mentioning that Autonomy might have a whole bunch of pieces of himself running around, and they might not all get along with one another, or have the same opinions. Almost like all these different pieces of its self are...Autonomous . Well this led me to remember one of the preludes in WoR, talking specifically about Ym the Cobbler. Ym starts to tell a boy about how in his religion everyone is a part of god, he says He believes, long ago, there was only one being which he simply calls One. One knew everything but had experienced nothing. And so One became Many in order to experience all things. As each experience is different, it brings completeness to One. Eventually, all will be gathered back in when the sum of land is attained and they will once again become One. Every person is a different mind of a single being experiencing different lives. As Many, they need ignorance. Each fragment of the One’s mind has its own body with different passions and inclinations. They exist in variety to experience all kinds of thought. That means some people must know and others must not. Just like some people must be rich and others poor. This is why he is interested in collecting other people's experiences. It is likely that this belief is the same one spread by Arlco. - From the coppermind Now I have learned in my years of reading Brandons work that when a character says,, HAY listen to this story about my religion, That is Brandons sly way of saying, this is a cosmere thing, ignore at your own risk. So my questions. Do you think Ym might have been a part of Autonomy that somehow made his way to Roshar? Do all pieces of Autonomy know they are pieces of Autonomy? Is One and Autonomy the same thing, but with a different name? What about Arlco and Axies the collector, could they be apart of Autonomy?

  12. While reading the Stormlight Archive books, I realized that spren are 'real life' emoticons. So naturally I made some emoticons involving spren. To use an emote, copy the link next to it in the parentheses and paste it into your post. You can also right-click the link and choose "Copy Link Location", then paste it in your message. 17thshard.com forums allow you to load pictures into your posts by pasting the URL of the image into the post's content. It may be helpful to save a .txt file in notepad with all of the links you prefer to use in order to copy and paste elsewhere. Also, more cosmere-themed emoticons are under construction. 13. I've had a thought for a while now that the Heralds are in some way connected to the Unmade, but now I've thought it out a bit more, I think I've put it together. Ten Heralds formed the Oathpact, where the Voidbringers could only return once one of them cracked and broke their oath. We have Word of Stormfather that nine of them broke. I think that, when Odium broke each of the Heralds, he took something from them, he 'unmade' them, and that made it easier to break them in the future. The essence he took, Investiture, Identity, whatever you want to call it (I'm not really sure what the actual term would be), or maybe, their pain, Odium used to create the Unmade. Further, I think that the part that was removed is connected to the Unmade's profile. This is why they seem to reflect an aspect of sentience, rather than the whole thing. My reasoning for this is Dalinar. When he feels the Thrill, he is a completely different being. When the Thrill isn't there and he can't fight, he turned into a wreck. Just like the Herald the Thrill was originally taken from - Jezrien. I think this is hinted at in the flashback where they are drinking together. Not in so many words, but in the similarities between them. Another one is Nale. He is practically a block of ice, seemingly cut off from any of his emotions, or some of them at least. I think this corresponds with the Unmade, Ashertmarn. I also think this is hinted at by Lift hugging him. I don't think we know enough about the other Heralds or Unmade to make connections, other than perhaps Ash and Re-Shepir. That is a thought based more on how similar Re-Shepir and Shallan were when they interacted. What would you guys say? Has Ash lost her'curiosity', for want of a better word? So, what do you guys think of my idea? Go ahead and poke holes Edit: I just found a WoB that could suggest I'm on the right track here.

  16. Remember, Kaladin does not "fly", he "falls". Falling speeds are governed by terminal velocity. On earth, a human body falls at terminal velocity of 120-180 mph depending on wind resistance (diving, flat, etc). Kal dives, so he would be closer to 180 mph. Gravity & atmosphere are different on Roshar. You are welcome to do the research and calculations to determine that difference. I'm happy to say 150-180 mph. It took the armies approx 7 days to reach the center of the plains. Marching 12 hours per day at an average of 2 mph would be impressive considering the challenges. That's 180'ish miles. So I'd estimate it took Kal just over an hour to get there.

I have been actually writing things off and on for about 5 years now, after some encouragement from my wife. I really enjoy thinking of stories and often disappoint myself with how little time I actually spend sitting down and writing. I recently transferred from sea duty to shore duty with the US Navy so I am hoping to kick myself in the pants and actually get som stuff done. So far this community has been really cool and have enjoyed being here.

  27. I think the "only 4th sons fight" is the thing Rock has lied to Bridge Four about. And knowing Rock, it's not an outright lie, but a lie of omission. I'm thinking, the full truth is that only 4th+ sons and the nuatoma fight... And that the nuatoma is either the eldest son of the clan ruler, or a role that can devolve to anybody with the right blood claim and who acts to claim it, as by fighting. This would fit in with the seniority by birth order apparent in what Rock describes of his society, with his describing the relatives (clan members) of a nuatoma as being like his servants, as the Alethi are to their Brightlords, and of course with an Unkalaki nuatoma periodically coming down from the Peaks to challenge a Brightlord to duel for Shards. In this interpretation, the two names his wife mentions, Tifi and Sinaku'a, were his two next older brothers, the eldest being the nuatoma in question who challenged Sadeas. In so doing they were not "breaking traditional roles" but essentially each in turn claiming the right of the eldest to be the nuatoma and to continue the fight for Sadeas' Shardplate. Whether out of cowardice or some other reason, Rock deferred (despite likely being the most combat trained of his brothers, as Tifi and Sinak'a would not have been fighters?), and chose to become the chull dung cooking bridgeman we met in The Way of Kings. But now, having picked up the Shardbow and used it to kill Amaram to save Kaladin (however he managed the draw), he has simultaneously claimed the role of nuatoma as well as become a full Shardbearer, the long-awaited High King of the Horneaters, or whatever the Unkalaki term for it would be. He bowed his head from the weight of the responsibility of it, and whatever unspoken reason there had been for him to have been dodging it all along.

  33. You probably all know that October is breast cancer awareness month. That's great. Next month is mental health awareness month. And this is a big deal to me. Depression falls under this category. I do experience high functioning depression. I know people who's depression is much much worse than mine. And guys, don't just go around saying you have depression if you're just sad sometimes. I constantly just have this feeling of not belonging, like no one cares, and like I'm completely alone. I have a really good friend who has serious depression, and one of my oldest friends thinks she has high functioning depression as well. (Yes, Kaladin has extreme depression). Another one is Multiple Personality Disorder. (MPD, or DID Dissociative Identity Disorder). This is where someone basically has several different personalities, with different characteristics, and things like that. (I believe Shallan actually has this, or at least experiences something a lot like it). Yet another is Obsessive Compulsion Disorder. More commonly known as OCD. Guys, this is a mental disorder. It isn't simply extreme perfectionism! Do not joke about having OCD. It's really serious. It's when everything has to be perfect in someone's life, or else they experience extreme anxiety. And more. I'm far from an expert, but I know the gist of it. I have another family member who has this. It's not good. I would suggest doing some research on it, though. Now Depersonalization/Derealization. This is a less heard of disorder, even though a lot of people experience it. Only two percent of people who experience this actually have a mental disorder. About fifty percent of the population experiences feelings of this in their life. Sometimes it lasts for minutes, other times, years. And yet others, a lifetime. It's when a person experiences extreme detachment from reality, the world around them, and even their thoughts. It can be caused by many things. The most common one named is abuse. The reason I care so passionately about this one, is that I've been experiencing it for the past two months. It feels like much much longer. I feel like I'm watching everything through a window. I don't know if I actually have the mental disorder, I'm just sort of trying to get through this school year. I have a friend who wanted me to add autism and Gender Dysphoria to this list. I'm going to add schizophrenia. I'm not going to go deep at all into any of these, but I will do something. Autism. (This month (April) is actually autism awareness month). Autism is not what you might think. Many people have it, (1 in every 59 males, 1 in every 189 females). And some don't even know. People who have autism often have a speech impediment early in life, don't like being around other people, and can become very attached to objects. (One of my sources). Gender Dysphoria is when a person feels like they should be the opposite gender, or in other words, that they feel strongly that their gender does not match their biology. Schizophrenia is really hard to spell. But it is also a life long disorder, that effects about 1% of the population. Symptoms can include hallucinations, trouble with thinking and motivation, and lack of motivation. (Source). Guys, mental disorders are a real thing. None of us can explain the full extent of it. I really like these two things: "What's depression like?" " it's like drowning. Only you can see everyone else around you breathing. " And: "Explaining to someone what a mental disorder is like is like trying to explain colors to someone blind."I All of that is copied from my profile. This stuff now, I'm writing from scratch. We need to raise awareness for these things. They are serious. Every one in four people is going through some form of mental illnesses. And the people who aren't... Let's just say they can be downright inconsiderate. Some members of TUBA really took my post to heart. Several of them have changed their profile pictures green, the color for mental health awareness. We have also added things into our signitures, explaining. So, spread the word. And if you have a type of mental illnesses you'd like to be added to the great list, speak up. Or if you have or have had a mental illness, and you are willing to share some, if not all, of your story, that would be amazing. It's time to stop hiding in the shadows, alone. We can be in the sun, together, and stronger. We can make a difference. This I promise. Even if it's just for one person, it counts. If you know someone with a mental illness, though, and you haven't experienced it yourself, don't say you understand. It doesn't help. What helps most, and I speak from personal experience, is just being there. Nothing more. Nothing less. That's all it takes. Is anyone else willing to help?

  34. Heya writerly types! I had an idea recently for a thread for us writers who are working on the first lines and early hooks in our novels. Basically I think it would be cool to have this thread be a place where we can get real reader feedback on the beginnings of our novels. In this day and age I think it is important to hook a reader early and keep them hooked so hopefully this will be helpful. The way I envision this working is that a writer posts the first line of their novel, followed by the first paragraph and first scene in spoiler tags. If a reader likes the first line and wants to keep reading they can open the spoiler tag for the next paragraph and so on, then they can give some overall feedback to the writer. It would be good to get honest feedback about whether our first lines/paragraphs are hooking readers so even if you don't like it, try to give honest and polite feedback to help us improve. It can be nerve-wracking for us writerly types to put our work on the line for potentially harsh feedback, so please be gentle. I'll go first. This is from my current work in progress, tentatively titled "The Whistler", my attempt at a fantasy/crime thriller: Dorian mopped up his brothers’ blood in silence. There you go. Thanks for reading, if you did. I look forward to some feedback. All you other writerly types, don't be shy about contributing! I hope this thread will be a helpful tool to all of us.

  36. Just a pretty small idea I had about the mechanics of Voidbinding which I thought I'd share. We know that the way investiture works is determined by the planet, on Roshar it works through manipulating the surges. However, the way that Investiture is accessed is dependant on the Shards for which it is aligned. For example, to form and progress a Nahel Bond, the radiant has to experience personal growth (Cultivation) through swearing oaths (Honour). I was thinking about this and wondering how it related to Voidbinding and I recalled this quote from WoR. There does seem to be a link between the Thaylen Passions and Odium. Venli's speeches to the singers, particuarly the Thaylen ones, about needing to have passion made me wonder if that might be the key to Voidbinding. Someone, Human or Singer, with a connection to Odium and a strong enough intent could probably obtain Voidbinding powers just by really wanting them. Just an idea, feel free to nitpick it to death if you want and quote all the WoBs.

  38. That's what I do, change as I type. My "draft zeros" are all handwritten, and when I type them in, I add to them. I have the original hardcopy if I want to go back. I do try to hew fairly closely to what I've written in terms of large plot beats, or fighting the urge to delete large swaths of text I don't like. Subtractive edits like that are easier to complete (and reverse!) in digital format, so even if I'm absolutely mortified by what I've written on paper, I will try to get it down, but I also have no problem adding to places that were too sparse on my handwritten original, if that makes sense.

  39. Hah! Interesting title! If I remember correctly, first, second and third sons are needed for growing food, ruling, etc. Only fourth+ sons are trained as fighters. So yes, Rock probably was trained as a fighter, but then his older brothers were killed. So more likely, rather than being a coward, he's no longer the fourth+ son, so no longer a fighter, and that's why he refused to fight. I think her inference there is not that she expected him to fight, but that she expected him to rule. It seems likely to me that it was his older brother(s) that were killed by Sadeas, and that he is actually the clan leader now. And of course, now that he has Shards, he should be King of the Horneater Peaks.

Something that the Radiants, or possibly humans in general did, wounded, betrayed, or weakened the Sibling. Possible that something happened to the bondsmith who was tied to the Sibling? If a bondsmith abandoned his/her oath, wouldn't it "kill" or at least badly affect the spren bonded to it? Maybe the Sibling is like some giant dead eye in Shadesmar.

Based on the little info drop that Harmony did in the coach about Southern Scadrians and their technology/aggressiveness my imagination immediately thought of a Scadrian WW1 coming on the horizon. Harmony seemed really worried about Elendels current Technological slump. While his manipulation of Wax was awful it was Paalm going all Viva La Revolution that made him aware of it. While it does kinda seem Destination before Journey I think he is trying to avert a much more dangerous crisis.
