  1. Well, it’s Mother’s Day in the USA and maybe elsewhere. I know in Guatemala Mother’s Day is always May 10th. No matter what day it is, this is a tribute to the mother’s we’ve all read about in Sanderson’s books. Tindwyl: She’s a Mother of Terris. We never got to meet any of her children, but I also feel that she was a mother to Vin. (Elend as well, but not as much as. She was more of a teacher to him.) She taught Vin how to be herself. Mare: We never got to see Mare at all and she never had any children, although she wanted to. However, with the things Kelseir said and how she would have liked Vin as a daughter. I think of Mare as one of the mothers that I admire from Sanderson’s books. She sounds like a wonderful lady and I think she would have taken Vin in just as Kelseir did. Mrs. Saxon: She may not be around a lot for Joel, but she works all the time to provide for her son. You can tell she care about Joel. Dalinar’s Wife: I won’t say anything about her here, because of OB spoliers, but know that I love her. Hesina: I love her clever wit and the way she talks with Kaladin. She is also great. By no means is this an extensive list of the mothers in Sanderson’s books. Please add/discuss the other mothers you admire. If you want you can even mention mothers from other books as well.

  3. We've had confirmation for a few months now that Kaladin's mother Hesina had a Lighteyed parent. Seems simple enough. There was some speculation early on about who she, and by connection Kaladin, was related to, but no one had evidence to supply so it was all being discussed frivolously. I may have just discovered Hesina's relative though through a single line in Oathbringer. Setting: the castle rescue attempt in Part Three with Kaladin and Elhokar moving down the final hallway leading to the Queen. (Page 811 in the Hardcover) This is the clue. Hesina and Aesudan, the queen of Alethkar were related. (Personal guess: Hesina is Aesudan's Aunt) Kaladin is a relative to the Crown. I also think this leads into why Aesudan was worried that the Almighty was displeased with her. She was hiding the fact that she had darkeyed parentage. According to the Vorin religion, all lighteyes are born to rule and are superior to the darkeyes. If it became known that one of her Grand?parents was darkeyed, she could lose standing among the nobility. It's easy to see how an Ardent could have found out and used the information to influence her behavior.

  4. Malcolm Curled in the fetal position, his steward Banging in the door to his bunker. "My Lord! You have to come out soon, there is a ball tonight." "I have explained this to you multiple times. I can't trust anyone, you guys could all be assassins! If I go to the ball, I might as well be asking to be killed! 2 mistborn, dead! in less than a week! They are coming for us, all of us!" "Sir, you are being unreasonable, you already spent an large amount of your houses resources in buying this ridiculous bunker!" "Mark my words, this bunker will keep me alive!" Shaking his head sadly, his steward tried one last attempt to preserve the houses pride, "Everyone will talk about you at the ball! This will destroy alliances and destroy what pride we could have in our house if you spend the entire night hiding down here!" "They will laugh now, but when I outlive them all, they will mourn their lack of foresight!" The steward shakes his head, then nods to the soldiers standing by. They picked up the battering ram, to break down the first door. After the first crash of wood against wood, Malcolm sits up in a panic, They are trying to break in! I need to collapse the doorway! He begins to move toward the lever to collapse the entry hall. The bunker had been designed in layers, he could collapse the first entrance and fill it with over 10 tons of stone, and mover in deeper every time they tried to get in. Suddenly, with a crash, the soldiers broke through the door and sprinted toward Malcolm. "NOOOOOOOOOO! YOU WILL NOT TAKE ME!" He sprinted toward the lever, when he was lifted off his feet, and carried backward, out of his glorious bunker, screaming the entire time. Hours later, Malcolm walked out of a carriage, looking like people had to fight to put clothes on him. As he walked through the halls, he had one thought, to survive the night so that he could return to safety in his bunker.

  5. I was just thinking that we know (or at least it has been implied)that Steris has spent a fair bit of time dealing with financial “mysteries” as she puts it. And given that at least half of what the set deals with is related to finance she could play a key role there. There is one more thing that she MAY be helpful, but this is WAY more speculative and could MUCH more easily amount to nothing. We have a line in book 1 where Marasai says that she is “quite sure” Steris doesn’t have Allomancy. But we don’t know why she doesn’t know. It’s possible that when she was younger before she tested by however “snapping” works nowadays, Steris reaserched a lot about the metalic arts and the different possible ways they could interact with each other, before moving on when it was realized she had no potential. IF this is true, again a big if, that’s another possible way for her to help solve the mystery.

The Nightwatcher snaps her finger and a bag of potato chips appears in his hands. Zath walks back home satisfied with finally outsmarting the Nightwatcher. He gets back home and realized everything he ever owned was stolen. "Well I guess I did say I didn't want anything else." I wish for it to be Halloween everyday.

  16. While I was listening to Warbreaker, I noticed that Clod was described as being as fast as Denth, or almost as fast. So I was thinking... is Clod Arsteel? That whole thing about Denth buying Clod might just be fake news, even though Denth, Tonk Fah, and Jewels (or however you spell that) are always treating Clod like a piece of machinery, this might just be because they have experience with Lifeless. What are your thoughts?

  18. Welcome! Symbols are popular, aons and allomancy and the like. I've always thought a wood burned silhouette of Kredik Shaw would be cool, if complicated. Or maybe make some boxings out of wood. Or a map from one of the books. Or a chalkling. Or make a spren. Or Stick. OUT OF WOOD. (Genius idea right there )

  24. Hi all! Just signed up for 17th shard yesterday after browsing for a few days. Thought I would post here and say Hi! Figured I'd give a history of how I got into Sanderson's amazing work and see if I can get other people talking about how they got involved. So, over here in Utah our High schools all compete in a massive literature/language/art competition called English Quest. I decided to join the competition in 2010. The competition has five books in five genres that are a required read to join the competition. In the fantasy category Mistborn was the book of the year. I read it, and had a lot of fun with it. I competed in the poetry recitation, monologue recitation, and short story writing competition, so none of my categories had to do with the book itself. However, I was supporting some friends who submitted a Mistborn to the movie trailer competition (had to be based on one of the books), and got reinvigorated with the book. Amusingly, one of my best friends I met through work after high school also competed in English Quest 2010. My original post got hit with a spam warning, so I'm wondering if the video link did that. I'll submit that separately. Anyway, after English Quest was over I went back to Mistborn to reread, and realized there were sequels. Que me reading the Era 1 trilogy with mad abandon. Got a few friends to read it and was pretty content. Then my high school librarian directed me to another Sanderson book the library had, Warbreaker. Great read, had fun with that. I didn't really hunt down what other works Sanderson had, but throughout high school I would borrow the Mistborn series every few months when I didn't feel like hunting down new books to read. In my senior year Alloy of Law came out, and with Mistborn becoming one of my favorite books series, I decided to go purchase my own copy of the Mistborns and Warbreaker. Didn't have enough money to purchase anything else, but I noted Elantris existed at that time. Picked up Shadows of Self a few month after it came out (didn't realize it had been released), blinked, and picked up Bands of Mourning. Eventually, after going through the books for the dozenth time or so I finally noticed the name "Hoid" popped up a lot. Informant in books one and three of Mistborn, and as the storyteller in Warbreaker. I go looking it up online thinking it was a reference of some sort. And cue me getting hit in the face with the Cosmere. Oh, colors! I picked up the info about Hoid, and a few other tidbits I could pick up without spoiling myself to the other books. Being super busy with college, and not having any money had me put buying the other books on a back burner. Graduated early 2016, and ended up picking up the Reckoners series, not realizing they weren't connected to the Cosmere. In September of 2017, I went out and purchased Elantris, Emperors Soul, and the first two books of the Stormlight Archives. Lucky me, by the time I was done reading Words of Radiance it was only about a month until the release of Oathbringer (Mwahahaha, minimal waiting time!). After I got done reading Oathbringer I dove into the Cosmere. Hung out mostly on Reddit and Coppermind learning all I could learn. Finally caught enough references to 17th shard (the forum) that I decided to wander over here a few days ago and check it out. I kept seeing theories and ideas I wanted to comment on so I decided to jump in! I still need to go hunt down the Arcanum Unbound to read, but I want to get White Sand read first, so I am still just a little bit behind in becoming a Cosmere Scholar. I also skipped over Rithmatist since that was Sanderson's children's series. Might pick it up to check out his style, but at this moment I don't have money to spend on a book that isn't relevant to the Cosmere. I also read the first couple of books of the Wheel of Time before ever knowing Sanderson eventually took them over. I didn't like them, so I decided to stop reading the series. Been wondering for a couple of years if it might be worth the time to make another attempt at the series. So that's my story! I'll be floating around this forum learning the formatting style and rules of the forum, and interjecting myself into conversation. Since Mistborn is my primary series that started all this, and one of my favorite books series of all time, I'll probably be focused over there most of the time! -EmeraldMind

  26. I don't think you'd need Steris to have a lot of knowledge of the Metallic Arts to contribute to working out the Set's plans. Most of what they're doing seems to involve research into hemalurgy, which she wouldn't have any information on and which has been revealed to Marasi and Wax through the book Marsh hands over. But her knowledge of finance could be huge, as she could help Wax follow the money and track down its members and their bases of operation. My guess is we'll be seeing the two working together like that in The Lost Metal.

  31. Greetings, troupers and troubadors, fae and firestarters: I should like to inform you that the local stargazers have severely misjudged the date of the next new moon. It will, in fact, occur a week after the originally predicted date. As such, your performance has been rescheduled to May 20. The countdown has been revised to reflect this fact. We apologize for any inconvenience this may pose to you. Until then, try to stay away from any stormy seas or angry gentlemen.

  32. This theory intrigues me and I want to believe it but I need more evidence Edit: I wonder if the reason she kept treating her ardent so well was not only she was worried that the Almighty was displeased with her for being related to darkeyes, but also to keep the ardent so comfortable that they don't investigate into her family history.

  36. So a friend of mine finally got around to reading Oathbringer for the first time and he made this observation: he believes the First Ideal of the knights radiants reflect all three shards. Life Before Death: Cultivation Strength Before Weakness: Odium Journey Before Destination: Honor I don't know if this has been noticed before, we barely read these forums but thought this might be something cool enough to share.

In a time of trial, a time yet to come, a time far past, a wind blew through the Northern Roughs. The wind was not a beginning. There are no beginnings and no ends to the Shattering of Adonalsium. But it was a beginning.
