  1. From the album: Elantris Drawings

This started as a figure study. I came across a picture of a guy huddled up wrapped in a sheet and thought he looked like an Elantrian, and then I just kept adding more people to the sketch.

  4. There have been multiple instances of individuals having more than one account in the past month or two. Much of this is involved with Social Groups. I cannot surmise why someone would do this, but it often involves upvote manipulation and trying to manipulate people in multiple social groups, hence me posting this reminder in this forum. Perhaps some find having multiple accounts or joke accounts funny, but this is very serious. Multiple accounts are not allowed. Do not do this. They have never been allowed, and apparently the line in the Rules post that has always been there is unclear, and the additional reminder I posted in 2014 is just as valid as ever. Read this now: http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/6977-notice-on-multiple-accounts/ This deception is not "fun" and is not funny, and will be swiftly dealt with. Ignorance will not be a sufficient excuse. I have instantly banned people before for multiple accounts, and frankly, due to the three instances of this very recently where we've been generous to not ban people instantly, but we will not continue to be generous in this way. I am lenient on multiple accounts due to if you have login issues (due to Microsoft servers refusing our emails for validation), but that's about it. There are no realistic reasons why users require multiple accounts. Let me know if you have questions. If you had made joke accounts, tell me now and we will deal with them, but these multiple accounts issues will not continue.

  5. We've had confirmation for a few months now that Kaladin's mother Hesina had a Lighteyed parent. Seems simple enough. There was some speculation early on about who she, and by connection Kaladin, was related to, but no one had evidence to supply so it was all being discussed frivolously. I may have just discovered Hesina's relative though through a single line in Oathbringer. Setting: the castle rescue attempt in Part Three with Kaladin and Elhokar moving down the final hallway leading to the Queen. (Page 811 in the Hardcover) This is the clue. Hesina and Aesudan, the queen of Alethkar were related. (Personal guess: Hesina is Aesudan's Aunt) Kaladin is a relative to the Crown. I also think this leads into why Aesudan was worried that the Almighty was displeased with her. She was hiding the fact that she had darkeyed parentage. According to the Vorin religion, all lighteyes are born to rule and are superior to the darkeyes. If it became known that one of her Grand?parents was darkeyed, she could lose standing among the nobility. It's easy to see how an Ardent could have found out and used the information to influence her behavior.

  6. Hi everyone, I have been a long time reader of Brandon Sanderson(8ish years) but haven't been into the fandom as I spent most of the time from 2012-2017 under the Atlantic ocean. I have 3 girls(Aurora, Ariel, Jasmine) and once son(Not named after a Disney character, Jacinth). I am currently in living in Oahu on shore duty with the Navy So not spending lots of time underwater. One of the coolest thing about Hawaii is that there is a huge nerd culture here, lots of cons(haven't been to enough), game stores, etc.. Unfortunately, I've only found one other person who is a huge Sanderson fan that I get to talk to semi regularly at my Adventurers league group. I guess I'm here to get a little bit more Sanderson talk in my life. Also was wondering if anyone knows if Sanderson ever gets out here to Hawaii, I haven't seen anything about it on the internet.

  7. The pale light from the newly risen moon slowly setting sun bathed the clearing in a eerie glow. A campfire had been set but not lit as several members of the group argued over the best way to light the fire. Trees loomed over everyone, their skeletal branches looking like fingers stretching out to grasp those below as they moved to the cool wind that only added to the chills running up everyone's spines. Well, almost everyone. Nestled among the branches, wrapped in his warm woolen cloak sat Laon. A smirk plastered on his face as he watched those below.

  11. Honorblades are made of Honor's godmetal, which we've been calling Tanavastium as it fits the pattern of atium from Ati and lerasium from Leras (Harmonium only exists as such because Sazed didn't like how 'Sazedium' sounded) but that's not been canonized by Brandon. Common Shardblades are also godmetal and are likely an alloy of Honor and Cultivation's godmetals, depending on the particular spren involved. Brandon has described Honorblades as working on the same principle as an unsealed metalmind, but they're not the same thing.

  12. I tried to make it so the post's title isn't an Oathbringer spoiler in and of itself, but after re-reading Oathbringer after giving it a few months to settle in the back of my mind, I appreciated several things much more than I did the first time (which was partly due to reading the preview chapters as they were released, something I feel disrupted the feel of the pace of events for me, and partly due to my overwhelming desire to Get To The Plot Advancement Stuff ASAP). I could make a list of things like that - such as my much better appreciation of how plausible it was that Shallan's mind was cracking in the way that it did, when the first read-through it felt much more awkward - but the biggest swing, oddly enough, was in my appreciation of the scene where Lopen swears the Second Ideal. The first time through, I read it as straight comic relief, because, well, it was Lopen. The Lopen. He was mugging for some injured soldiers, doing tricks with one arm (even though he now has two), and talks a bit about becoming a Radiant, and mentions that he'd been "trying to cry a lot, and moan about my life being so terrible, but I think the Stormfather knows I'm lying", to "crack" his soul more, when he casually speaks the Words of the Second Ideal - obviously not for the first time, since he screams at the SF about "Why didn't you listen earlier?!"... And has his Words accepted, with the burst of light, the frost-drawn Windrunner symbol, and everything. He is literally hopping mad, making a double-handed obscene gesture to the sky, and Rua, his spren, joins him in support (who even grows two extra arms to double-double on the gesture). It is a funny scene, to be sure. But.. It's also really touching. Because while it's funny to us, the reader, it wasn't a joke to the Stormfather. YOU WEREN'T QUITE READY. I remember laughing out loud the first time I read that, like it was a punch line. But the second time, on a re-read, I teared up a little. Because it's not like the Stormfather has a sense of humor, and was pranking Lopen or something. He was - can only be - dead serious. In the midst of the epic battle for Thaylen City, with Fused, Thunderclasts, Voidbringers parshmen singers, red-eyed humans, and even Odium himself making an appearance, Lopen had been desperately reaching for the Second Ideal, and drawing a blank. Because he really wasn't ready! He was grasping towards being like Kaladin was when he rescued Dalinar from his entrapment at the end of The Way of Kings, and "leveled up" in one of the most dramatic ways possible. But the Ideals are, like we saw in Teft's interpretation of the Third Ideal, tailored to the Radiant who swears them. And that's not who Lopen is. That's not his metier. Only now, in giving comfort, hope, and morale to injured soldiers who'd lost limbs, with his unique blend of self-deprecating and insulting humor, is he living, and not just speaking, the Second Ideal. Lopen has always been about being an indomitable source of humor, light, and hope - even as a one-armed bridgeman, a death sentence with a handicap - his high spirits and antics raised even those of Kaladin. Bringing that light to those wrapping themselves in darkness - that's who Lopen is. I will protect those who cannot protect themselves... From depression, from despair, from giving up. Thank you for what you do, Lopen. I look forward to seeing what your Third Ideal will be like.

Back to books, Mistborn era two, is just a really good story, I am fan of that type of story, older man trying to figure out how he fits into this new world, feeling like his world is leaving him behind.

  16. Hi everyone! I just signed up and figured I would introduce myself. I'm a 30 year old from Prince Edward Island, Canada. I've been reading for as long as I can remember (definitely my favorite hobby) and am an avid comic book & book reader. I'm married and have two little girls (5 & 3) and when my first daughter was born, it changed a lot in regard to my life in general, but more specifically my hobbies and how I consume them. The hobby that greatly benefited from me having kids has been reading, due to the time I spend at home with the kids and the ease of being able to pick up a book and read for a few minutes in between doing dad stuff. Because of that, I've been on a bit of a book renaissance over the last number of years. My own personal rule that I try to adhere to is to read something book related at least once a day, even if it is only for a few minutes at a time. I like to keep my brain working and think there's nothing better for keeping me mentally refreshed than reading a few pages in a good book. Fantasy is without question my genre of choice and I have read many fantasy series over the years, from Lord of the Rings (of course) to the likes of Dragonlance, Malazan, Forgotten Realms novels, etc. I was introduced to Sanderson as a writer and his work when he was tasked to complete The Wheel of Time. WoT is without question one of my favorite fantasy series. Robert Jordan did a wonderful job with that series and building an incredibly rich world to dive into. That being said, I think some of the strongest books in that series are absolutely Sanderson's books. Although I love the series, I feel WoT became quite bloated midway through and I wasn't sure if the ending could bring proper closure to all the disparate story threads and characters that had been introduced. Not only did Sanderson bring it all together in a very satisfying way, but I think that three book sequence is one of the most exciting endings I've read in fiction. I applaud him for undertaking such a monumental task and succeeding wholeheartedly at giving closure to WoT fans everywhere. As for Sanderson's work and the Cosmere specifically, I'm really only beginning to scratch the surface of his works. I've waited until this point to really delve into his work because I wanted to wait until I had the time available to get into most if not all of the Cosmere. A friend of mine recommended and bought me a copy of Elantris so I am currently reading and enjoying that. After that, I'll be diving into Mistborn and then Stormlight. If there's one thing I already love about Sanderson's works over all others, it's all the supplemental materials he provides for readers. The sheer amount of appendices and maps, etc. that he has in his books is just fantastic. I really love that sort of thing and it really adds to the world building for a series. And man oh man, I can't wait to pick up hardcover copies of the Stormlight Archives. Those are beautiful tomes and are a must for my bookshelves. Anyway, sorry to ramble along for so long. I'll do my best to drop in and contribute to some conversations once in a while and look forward to discussing the Cosmere with everyone going forward. Thanks for having me here!

  17. I appreciate your honesty and opinion. But permit me to offer another view on the matter. (Please note that this is in no way a personal attack, merely a stating of my opinion. This is not all in response to you specifically, your comments just got me started thinking about some things.) In my opinion, expecting people with mental illnesses, or different mental health, to act the same as you is wrong. Everything is situational. In a different context, someone with a mental illness might be acting so called normal, and you might be the odd one out. For an example, people with autism are more likely to have a better memory. If you were in a situation where your memory was being tested (say in a maze) then you'd be the one who would be judged to be inferior. People would ask, why can't that guy solve a simple maze? It's so annoying that they won't act the same as all the other people who are solving it easily. Context matters in other ways too. Take Winston Churchill. A great leader in war time, but once it was over the people voted him out. Why? Because people thrive in different situations. You could be a logical, left-side-of-the-brain kind of person and do really well in math. But in another field, the people with art skills will be considered superior. So context matters, even for those without mental illnesses. Now back to the plane idea. If someone is on a plane, acting in a way that I inconveniences dozens of people, are they wrong to be doing so? Well, the rules of the plane probably say that you can't be acting out of line. They probably have the legal right to act in a manner which expresses themselves, to a point. Depending on the case, they might not even be capable of forming the mens rea of the act to commit a crime. Religiously, most people would agree that people are of equal value in the eyes of God, and should be treated with kindness. Philosophically, you could say they breach the principles of utilitarianism. But it gets tricky when dealing with natural law. On that point, where does this kind of thinking lead us? On a small scale, you'd support the reduction of the freedoms of people for the good of society. (John Locke would certainly argue that the government should take away certain freedoms to provide benefit to all the people Eg. Take away the right to kill, and in return you can't be killed). But when you reduce the freedoms of specific people this thinking gets more dangerous. Why do you have the right to apply rules that discriminate against small groups of people who are different from you? Because you're superior? That just brings us back to the context thing. And even if you did have the right to impose your will selectively, where does it stop? People with mental illnesses make plane travel uncomfortable, so you bar them from planes. Then you bar them from social settings because they could annoy you there too. Then you decide to do away with them altogether because they don't provide enough to society. But wait! Old people can be annoying and burdensome too. Why not kill them? And people of different religions cause too much tension... We keep going like this until you get a Holocaust or genocide. It's a fine line to tread. A line that seems inconsequential when you're in charge and on top of the social ladder, but when the tables are turned due to context, people tend to have a change of heart. So should the person have stifled their outbursts? Maybe. It would be more socially acceptable to do so. However, entering that mindset is a dangerous. I know it may not seem like a big deal, but I'd rather make a stand now than once the bombs start dropping. TL:DR Context matters, conformity is bad, discrimination is a dangerous mindset.

  23. Hey everyone!I evidently need to make a reminder: multiple accounts are strictly prohibited. This has been long stated in the rules, just like this, in fact: I shouldn't really need to explain why this is prohibited, which is why the rules are short and sweet. You guys, for the most part, are some of the kindest, most excellent people on the internet. But in case you weren't aware, here are some reasons why multiple accounts are banned: 1. Reputation abuse. There are restrictions on the amount of downvotes you can make in a time frame, and obviously abusing the reputation system is not acceptable. Additionally, upvoting your own posts is also reputation abuse. 2. It's intentionally deceptive. If it's something you wouldn't say on your main account, you shouldn't say it at all. 3. Discipline avoidance. If there becomes a time when a member's actions are not in line with the forum guidelines, trying to use another account to get around this is very bad form. For those of you in shared computer households: don't worry! Usually this can be obvious from an introduction post--saying something like "oh I'm so and so's sibling". Just let us know. This won't be an issue for almost all of you, and we'll be very nice about that. For the rest of you, if we discover you have multiple accounts and suspect foul play, we will not hesitate to ban you. There will not be notice. We will be very strict about this. If you believe any such banning has happened in error, contact me at [email protected]. Have an awesome night, you awesome guys and gals. Sorry I had to post this; I really didn't want to, but certain events have transpired that are forcing my hand.

  24. It's Gonna Be May . . . Aladar: The Woman Who is Possibly Also Vivenna By Comatose Author's Note So I've hinted about it to some of you on Discord, and here it is! My May Aladar fan-fiction. My plan was to start releasing chapters in serial fashion starting May 1 (tomorrow), and see if I can get through the whole story. I was hoping to have a buffer at this point, so it may be a little ambitious to post this little four page blurb that I just wrote up moments ago, but what the hay, it's May. Let's do this. I will post the chapters as separate posts, and keep links in a "Table of Contents" here. Feel free to comment in between chapters. It's looking like I'm going to be madly rushing to get one of these out a week (especially if I want to do something longer in future weeks), so please forgive the typos and rough patches that will likely result. That being said, I am totally open to critique and constructive criticism so bring it on! EDIT: Looks like once per month might be more realistic with my schedule! SPOILERS NOTICE: This fanfic will spoil aspects of Oathbringer. Some of the dialogue in particular will be word for word. You've been warned. I really hope I'm not going to regret this. 25. Leyrann, may I join as a new order? Suggested order: The Elsewards (Combination of Elsecallers and Stonewards) Oaths: 1st Ideal: Life before Death, Strength before Weakness, Journey before Destination 2nd Ideal: I will seek knowledge in order to carry out my duties. 3rd Ideal: I will use wisdom for the furthering of my goals and responsibilities. 4th Ideal: I will hold fast to my logical decisions, even when others tell me to abandon them. 5th Ideal: I am resolution. I welcome aid in amending these oaths. Surges: Transformation and Cohesion. Together, these allow me as an Elseward to not only change objects but to shape them as well. Traits: Wisdom and Dependability. Spren: Decisionspren. Appear as greyish, intricate orbs accompanying their Radiant. Attributes: They usually take long amounts of time to settle on any one course of action, judging the positive and negative outcomes of such actions before taking them. Once they make a decision, however, they stick with it, almost stubbornly, despite other people's warnings against doing so. Have a serious view on life, and usually don't communicate too well with others who may be more carefree. However, when around like-minded people, nothing stops them from going on and on about logic and learning. Resonance: Can Soulcast almost anything into almost anything else, including Soulcasting human bodies. When shaping, often end up with intricate and detailed results, shaping armour from stone itself and the like. I'd like to join as an Elseward of the Third Ideal, and throw my lot in with the Knights of Honor.

  29. If I might be permitted to throw my 2 cents into here. If your child does have mental health issues with socialization, then I do think you should be teaching them what is and is not ok. That girl on the flight, she's still learning how to behave. But a pack mentality can come into play on flights, with nervous people making others nervous. Leading to an all out panic in an enclosed space. Thats the reason why you need to remove people like that from a flight. I get that she was disabled, and that shes still very young. But you need to ensure your child knows how to behave before taking them on a flight. Regarding that kid at the resturant, I do feel that the mother should be able to tell her son that its not ok to ask for food from someone, when they're injured. So far, I haven't heard of anyone who couldn't be taught in some way. though I have heard of people who needed to bring in a pro to help them teach. For me, I have similar social symptoms to autism. Difficulty making friends, difficulty holding a conversations, able to more easily bond with people much older or younger then me then people of my own age. That said, I don't have any other symptoms. I don't have a tactile obsession (though I do have some preferences, they aren't strong enough to make me avoid the ones I don't like). And I don't have any repetitive or ritualistic behaviors. And I have developed tricks during conversations I'm unfamiliar with, to at least kinda hold my own.

  32. Brandon has said that while this is what the singers assumed, it may not actually be the case, He arrived on Roshar after humans did and they gave him more of an ear than the singers, so it was assumed he was their god. He may have been indirectly involved on Ashyn without being actively worshipped by the humans living there before they caused a cataclysm. Brandon had something very interesting to say on this point. While he hasn't canonized it yet, his current idea is that they did not use the Cognitive Realm or Physical space travel but something similar to how Oathgates work, involving travel via the Spiritual Realm. Make of that what you will. xD It's less that Odium wants power on the planet and more that he wants Honor and Cultivation dead, but the general idea checks out. Brandon has said that Odium ordered his hit list by personal danger and by Shards he could claim were violating whatever agreement the Vessels made. Hence, Ambition was on the top of the list because he felt she was the biggest threat and he likely would have gone after Scadrial next because of the presence of two Shards had he not gotten stuck on Roshar, unless there's some other Shard he considered personally dangerous that was higher up the list. As mentioned, his spren is 'of Honor/Cultivation' but has been corrupted by Sja-anat. We have evidence from the Gem Archive that at least one other Truthwatcher had something similar happen, at a time when it would have been even harder to hide this since there were many Radiants back then and they'd all know what a Truthwatcher and their spren are supposed to be like. Somehow, this unknown Radiant managed it. Anyhow, it's very likely (if not yet canonized by Brandon) that the focus for the entire Rosharan System is bonds. We know they predated the arrival of the Shards (long-ish WoB here) and are responsible for things like chasmfiends being able to exist at all, they're responsible for the singer/listener forms and eventually they became responsible for human Surgebinding via the Nahel Bond. You can extend this to Ashyn too, with humans forming a symbiotic bond where the bacteria get a host that will pass it on and the human gets magic and an incentive to stay sick. Gems aren't really a focus of magic, they're just a convenient way of containing stormlight and spren. We know the Heralds had no need for gems because they could draw power directly from Honor for example, and Lift is definitely a weird case but she doesn't even need Stormlight directly. Yet she still has Surgebinding, because it's the bond that's important. Aesudan was very definitely overestimating her control over Yelig-nar. Odium even tells Amaram when handing him the gemstone that the queen was unable to control the power and it consumed her. In other words, she's dead and Yelig-nar is looking for a new host by the time the battle at Thaylen City happens. Planets all have Cognitive Representations as long as they're inhabited by any form of life, or they're being thought about. Brandon has said that there are 'souls' to planets but that doesn't mean that humans could necessarily affect them in a meaningful way. Khriss has some comments on this in the essay on the Selish System vis a vis that planet being unusual. Given what we've seen of Ashyn (not strictly canonical but the relevant bits are supported by Arcanum Unbounded) it sounds like humans destroyed the ecosystem with some form of the Surges, which is why most fled and others now live on floating cities above the uninhabitable surface. Sounds a lot like they're using Gravitation, both in the 'how could you mess things up that badly?' sense and in the 'how could you make these cities work?' sense.

  33. So couple things wrong with this theory but nice comment that humans brought Odium to Roshar. even though I read it it never occured me that their surgebinding could not be with Honor since they brought Void which is certainly Odium (hence Voidlight. Dawnsingers were Listeners. It is not theroy is is specifically said so in OB. But their form did not have to be granted by Honor there are a lot of spren that are from Cultivation or may be predating both. If is was Odium who switched sides of humas and Listeners, it is not specifically. On Roshar humans do not need to ingest gemheart in order to access surges from Odium. They need it only to access power from Yelig-nar. And he is not in both queen and Amaram but furt in the queen and then Amaram afterer she dies. Renarin does not have spren "rebeling againts Odium" he has spren from either Cultivation or Honor which has been corrupted by one of the Unmade. As for Yelig-nar serving the queen it could be just her ego talking. And I dont see how or why "planet itself MUST HAVE a cognitive representation in Shadesmar" ?

  34. Haha I totally agree! I was greatly disappointed by The Last Jedi as well, and comparing that movie with my initial disappointment for Oathbringer, it's reminded me that I've been kind of spoiled by the quality of Brandon's books! I've come to expect a higher standard from Sanderson - OB was mediocre for a Sanderson book (in my opinion), but incredible by any other standard.

  35. Yes, I would like to see this. I really think more screen time for Rock would be cool. And I would love to see this as well. I want the Shallan-Adolin marriage to fail, not necessarily because I want Shallan and Kaladin to get together, but because I think it would be very good for their respective character arcs if the marriage didn't work. I can see a lot of interesting plot threads moving forward for Shallan and Adolin if their marriage fails, but it would just be... kind of boring if it worked out and they stayed together. I personally want Shallan to crash and burn and have an emotional meltdown (I think it would be appropriate for the character development we've seen for her so far and would be unique for a Sanderson character), and the marriage failing would be the first step of that. As for whatever else I would add in Book 4 if I were Brandon Sanderson... I would like Ialai Sadeas to become a more important character following the murder of her husband and the death of Amaram. I want her to become vengeful and politically powerful after it is revealed that Adolin killed Sadeas. There needs to be consequences and repercussions from the Sadeas murder (that was one of my biggest letdowns about Oathbringer - the murder was barely brought up, and it was one of the most shocking parts about WoR).

  36. Odium is all about Hatred, Passion and Vengeance, also he is the Void sucking in all emotional pain leaving you numb. While you could twist the meanings of the ideals to match with Odium you could also reverse the Ideal itself: Death before Life. A Singer must die for one of the Fused to live. Or like Taravingian you must kill to gain future knowledge necessary to save life. Weakness before Strength. If Dalinar had broken and given his pain to Odium he would have been remade into Odium's champion. Destination before Journey. Vengeance no matter the cost. House Sadeas chose to side with Odium to gain vengeance for the murder of Sadeas. I know that if we give it more thought we can find more examples of this.

  37. Pretty sure you meant Scadrial there, yes? Do you have the Mistborn Adventure Game? (It's where the short story The Eleventh Metal was originally published.) It actually has some stuff about how Savants are affected by each metal. Disclaimer, though: even though Brandon Sanderson "approved" the game, Crafty Games adjusted the mechanics for some of the metals (really all of them, to some extent) for game balance reasons, so anything you read in there should NOT be considered canon. It does have some food for thought, though. And it's a fun game, to boot. Anyways... These kind of focus on the mental consequences of becoming a Savant, and the possible withdrawal symptoms of not burning. Steel Savants might feel claustrophobic when not burning, since they Steelpush so often that not being able to makes it seem as if everything is closing in on them. Similarly, Iron Savants might feel exposed and vulnerable. I would say that Breeze is a full, bona fide Brass Savant. He burns it practically ALL THE TIME, and has withdrawal symptoms when he's not burning (can't really remember where in the books that he's not burning Brass except the end of WoA, when he was dealing with... other stuff, so don't quote me on that). I agree that Zinc Savants would be affected similarly to Brass Savants. Copper... would Copper Savants even have a downside? Its effect is barely noticeable to the burner (IIRC). I'd say that Copper Savants would be the least affected by their Savant status, whatever that effect might be. Perhaps apathy? Since Copper blocks Emotional Allomancy, perhaps Copper Savants start to block empathy. I'd imagine that a Bronze Savant, when s/he stops burning, would experience a type of claustrophobia. Suddenly being cut off from the pulses they sense every waking minute? They'd feel as if something was smothering their senses and go into a panic attack until they could start burning Bronze again. <shudders> I would not enjoy that... It's possible that Miles in AoL could be a Gold Savant... No, scratch that. He's much more likely to be a Feruchemical Gold Savant -- if that's even a thing -- than an Allomantic Gold Savant. (Oooh, that's an interesting question: can Compounders become Allomantic Savants for their Feruchemical power?) Gold Savants might develop multiple personality disorder -- unable to tell which version of themselves is real, and which are just gold-shadows... I think Electrum Savants would suffer from extreme paranoia and anxiety when not burning their metal. Imagine if you always knew what would happen to you in your immediate future, and then that ability vanished. Boom: instantly paralyzed with uncertainty and fear. Your parkour days are over. Bendalloy Savants might feel (when not burning) as if the world is moving insanely fast, too fast to keep up with. Maybe a severe "fear of missing out". Cadmium Savants could feel chronically bored with the slow pace of everything, or maybe develop Cadmium-ADHD...? Meh, not sure about that one. The Enhancement Metals burn so fast that you'd need a ridiculously large amount of metal to become a Savant. Here's an idea for Aluminum Savants: what if they become the Scadrian equivalent of Drabs? Constantly scouring their bodies of any Investiture / Investiture-related materials or whatever. On that note, perhaps Duralumin Savants become something like a Nalthian with one Breath? A very, very, limited life sense, and slightly more healthy than your average Scadrial Joe. And then when they stop burning, they feel like a Drab. ...yeah, probably not. Nicrosil and Chromium Savants: they constantly want to touch people...? 'Cause that's the only way they can use their powers to get a discernible effect. "Your love language is physical touch."

  40. Kaladin was great in OB. He didn’t steal the show, and didn’t become superman. His character had some great development, and I’m glad the ending didn’t wind up being ”Kaladin saves the day” yet again. That would have been both boring and annoying.

  41. Pre-Catacendre Scadrial didn't really have a place for schools; Education for the skaa wouldn't serve Rashek's purposes and the nobles could hire tutors for their children. It's mentioned that a number of Terris stewards served this role. Post-Catacendre we know there are public schools and Marasi attended a university with a very modern-sounding curriculum, club activities and so on. We don't know a lot about Sel and education isn't really much of a focus, but we do get references to characters feeling like schoolboys/girls so the Aonic peoples clearly have institutions. In Hope of Elantris we see Matisse teaching how to draw Aons, which is likely part of the regular schooling though it's obviously more relevant to Elantrians (even if the magic isn't working at that point) and we know that the Aons are part of the everyday world through Brandon's Aonic dictionary. We also know there are religious schools in Fjorden for the education of priests and there's probably some form of public education to go along with it, organized by the church. Teaching on Roshar depends on location and it seems like the Ardentia does most of the teaching in Vorin lands. We know there are private tutors for those who can afford it. In addition to what Sigzil has to say about studying for the Azish exams (which sounds a lot like the Confucian exam system in historical China) we have Lift making comments about children attending lessons, so there appears to be some form of public schooling as well. We don't get much of a look at education on Nalthis and we saw that Vivenna and Siri were educated by tutors, not too surprisingly. There's probably some form of public education in Hallandren but I don't recall if this was ever formally confirmed. But they're got a thriving economy that's able to support a restaurant trade so it's a safe assumption that they've got educational systems as well and we just don't see them. We know there's higher education on Taldain (Khriss was already a scholar before becoming a worldhopper after all) though we don't get much detail on how it's done on either Dayside or Darkside. Probably depends on where you're from, with the different cultures and kingdoms in each region. We can assume there's formal education on First of the Sun and Threnody but we spend all of our time there in locations on the fringes of 'civilization'. And we know there's a university in Silverlight. So education is there, it's just never been a huge onscreen factor.

  43. Ashyn was razed (haha) pretty badly, but according to the unpublished Silence Divine, it still exists and is inhabited. A planet that no longer had any life forms would slowly shrink until it was just a small patch of ground in the CR, similar to a moon or other uninhabited planet that people are aware of but don't live on. If there aren't people around to perceive individual objects, I think it would just be the patch of ground representing the planet.

  45. Hi. LA representative here. I appreciate the idea of this topic, but I'm not agreeing to anything until I've gotten my two cents in. Here are my suggestions: The insertion of a preamble stating that the good of the 17S should be of foremost concern, and any actions taken should be made only after considering their effect on the 17S. The Shard does have site rules that should be adhered to. No one wants to see the Shard spammed with angry threads, particularly ones of no relevance to the topics and sections they are posted in. Which brings me to my second point. Clear boundaries need to be made. Areas outside of intro, social groups, pms, RPs and personal pages (although that one needs limitations set on it) should be out of bounds. We’ve seen how easily topics can be derailed (I’m thinking of the Sanderson Memes topic) which is an annoyance to uninvolved members. Unrelated bystanders should be able to opt out of all of this. I suggest a ‘non-combatant’ designation that members can adopt for themselves. Essentially, it would mean that they are off-limits for assassination. The catch to their immunity being of course that they can’t assassinate anyone either, it goes both ways. (Safeguards to prevent abuse of the system needed) Duels are great between consenting members. I’m not totally against them, but I do want restrictions in order to preserve the quality of the 17S. There should be a forfeit option. If someone challenges you, you should be able to forfeit or decline if you’re not interested. The long-term effects of death should be minimal. Lose your pride? Yes. Anything else? Nah. I’m against the of ‘returning’ members. I’m also against the idea of disbanding/ forcible takeovers of guilds if enough members are killed. It gives an unfair advantage to groups that are newer, more specialized, more passive etc. On the topic of the long-term implications, I support keeping a running total of those you’ve killed, maybe in your sig like SE does or like the DA does with spike counts. It provides an incentive. That said, I think that should be enough of an incentive. If we have fights ‘happen’ in a realm with no physical consequences that would be nice, and you could always try again if you want another go at it. (appropriately cosmere ideas welcome) We should have a no killing newcomers policy. No one want their first experience on 17S to be their assassination. We need a no cheap deaths policy. A single post saying, ‘a bomb explodes, you dead’ is effective, but doesn’t give a fair chance to fight back. Impartial moderators could effectively solve this issue, especially if the moderator gets to decide the effect of any offensive action.
