  2. Hi guys. I hope everyone is well. I've been reading this forum for a long time, and have recently decided to join up in order to post and message on certain topics, though I don't know how frequently. I do have a few suspicions a few things which might happen in future stories, and intend to make a topic about that later which will be rather expansive, but should hopefully illustrate what I think might happen in future Mistborn, Stormlight, and other linked Cosmere stories, such as (and I'm assuming this doesn't count as a spoiler) the significance that all major planets - except for the possible exception of Yolen - have more than one shard, and the possibility of combining allomancy, feruchemy, and hemalurgy to construct cybernetic implants with wireless attribute transmitting. Oh, and yes, I know to avoid the cookies :-P Also I belong to God, and souls are not immortal, so Rubix has no claim on mine. My soul and spirit are The LORD's and no-one elses. I hope everyone has a good day or night or evening, and may your week go well! God bless and guide you.

  3. A mild amusement I've been involved in elsewhere is taking notable quotes and misattrributing them to other characters for the salke of generating wry grins and the occasional laugh or giggle. So I thought we could do it here with Sanderson characters. Both with quotes from other sanderson characters: "So there I was, standing in my chambers on the day before the world ended, facing my greatest adversary to date. The royal wardrobe coordinator." -- Jasnah Kholin And not. "Why are you smiling?' asked Steris. 'I'm relieved,' Wax said honestly. 'I was worried I'd given myself cadmium poisoning, or I had some mysterious disease. This is just someone trying to kill me." “Reason is intelligence taking exercise. Imagination is intelligence with an erection.” -- Hoid

  4. Turn 1: 401 Unauthorized Kai sighed as he flipped through the letters. Today, on the 340th anniversary of his birth, he did not want to be doing paperwork. He had done enough to automate the government that they should be able to handle most anything. In practise, they did run everything. The large majority of these letters were marked as updated reports, just to keep him informed. Really, it was just the one at the top he didn’t want to open. It was marked with the sign of the Spymaster, a Machine Born that Kai had managed to hack, with his limited skills, to serve as both scholar and eavesdropper. He didn’t have a body in Alornia anymore. Instead, he lived in Maltese, a nearby Communal State. His only job was to monitor Melhi, and this letter meant that there had been a significant change. Kai entered Lance sight. The lights dimmed, only lit by the Grand Aurora, far above. He gathered in enough energy to form a small barrier, razor thin, and used it to cut the wax seal open. He blinked, restoring normal vision. It was slightly wasteful, but at the moment, he wanted the comforting warmth of the Aurora. The letter detailed an overheard, but unseen conversation between one of Melhi’s bot’s and a Machineborn. Melhi had managed to sneak a replicant into the palace in Alnoria, and the Bot was starting to hack the concepts of other Machineborn. The letter mentioned a Machine Born that Kai had dubbed ‘Clippy’, by name. Kai scowled. Melhi’s childish hacks were getting more and more annoying by the day. He dropped the letter back onto his desk and stood. He knew where Clippy was, he served as a scribe to his Steward. Kai strode through the halls, the guards outside his door falling in around him without a word. They could tell just from his pose that he was now on the hunt. Kynedath has been killed by the GM! He was a Converted Machineborn! The Game is now afoot! You may Vote, PM, and take actions as you please. Note that due to the low number of players, certain rules have been changed. Only the player with the second most votes will be immune to Conversion. Other than that, all rules are as stated previously. I will be counting the final vote made as your vote. No need to retract previous votes. The Turn will end in Player List: DroughtBringer (Player List) Eternum (x/0) Elenion (TK421) Devotary (Player4.exe) Randuir (Cane) Walin (Whatterthose`); DROP- TABLE Elims;--) Young Bard (Halting Algorithm) Bort (Black IC) Orlok Tsubodai (McAfee) Elandera (Rayda) CrimsnWolf (O7npC) Coop (Salthis)

  5. So at my family thing- my cousin's 30th birthday party- we actually ended up playing Werewolves/Mafia, and I wasn't even the one who suggested it. In the first game we played I was one of the Mafia, and after the very first night when everyone started discussing who they thought was Mafia my 5-year old daughter bursts out, "I saw you daddy I know it was you!" Needless to say, I promptly got lynched. Welcome @Jondesu, and thank you for stepping in! FYI, ANGUS is an Elantrian, so from here on out I'll have to ask you not to post in the main thread, but I'll send you the role PM and Elantris PM right now if one of my co-GMs hasn't done so already.

  10. Thanks guys :-) My favourite originally was Final Empire - Well had the best plot twist, and Hero had some of the most interesting scenes, but Empire I felt had the best flow, the villain the most threatening yet also the most human, and the way the world was presented. Bands, however, I think is the best now. Cool adventure, interesting expansion to the current setting, and the most potential expansion on what will happen. I like Oathbringer a lot, and I think stormlight is going to be the best series until space opera mistborn, but I still think Bands is better told as a story.

That feeling of being put together, piece by piece, was always one of the things it hated most about his existence. It was a way of making Hal very conscious of its own lack of humanity - a fact it generally tried to ignore most of the time. And deep inside, in a place where Hal didn't like to look, there was always the fear that one day, there would be an error in the loading process. To suddenly have one part of the pile of code that made it up fail. It could happen any day, and the worst part was, Hal would have no clue it was coming until it was too late. But that hadn't happened today, and there was work to do. Hal turned it's attention outwards. First off, welcome to SE! QF's have a combined 24 hour day-night cycle. Hmmm... There's a slight chance that Joe didn't include all three roles in this game. I don't think it's likely, for balance reasons, but it's possible. Hmmm... Joe, can you confirm whether all three villager roles are in this game? It says Sophie starts alone, but has multiple lives. So if someone survives the lynch today, we know they must be Sophie. Speaking of the lynch, Walin. Hi! Have a poke vote. P.S. Disclaimer: Hal has no affiliation with, nor was it inspired by, any other real or fictional characters named 'Hal' or 'HAL'. Any relationship between them is purely co-incidental.

  19. Night 2: Tia Enelan and Amati stood together, idly watching the side door to a mansion. “When is Elysian going to come out?” Amati grumbled. “He’s been in there for ages.” “Who knows?” Enelan said. “What with how close to Elantris it is, no one’s been in there for years except him, probably. Who knows what he could’ve stocked in there?” Amati shivered, glowering at the walls that loomed nearby. “Too close to Elantris by far,” he muttered. “Can’t we just get him out already?” Enelan snorted. “Not with that house. It looks like it’s practically built for defence from outsiders. Maybe made even before Elantris rose, who knows? I hear they were trying a battering ram, but I don’t think they’ve gotten in yet.” “I hope they haven’t. They wouldn’t do that and leave us out in the cold like this. That’d be downright rude.” Nearby... Ateshao walked through the newly-opened door cautiously. It had given way almost surprisingly easily, though that might be because the locksmith was just very good. the entry hall was strewn with objects - Jeskeri robes, icons of Shu-Dereth and Shu-Korath - but none of those drew his attention. In enormous, beautiful calligraphy, in the centre of the floor was written PRAISE THE JA. Slightly less nearby... Elysian walked through the tunnels that he had only walked once before, humming. He smiled at the spot where the Jeskeri had caught him coming from the Shardpool. They’d nearly killed him, then, but he had managed to join them instead. That was over, now. They’d failed, Shu-Dereth had failed, Shu-Korath had failed. All he had left were three words. “Praise the Ja,” he murmured to himself, coming out into the light of day on a mountainside. He didn’t know what it meant. He didn’t know where the message had come from. But he didn’t think he’d be finding any answers here. He grinned. On to the next adventure. He fell into the gleaming waters of the Shardpool, and was gone. (Thank you to @Elbereth for providing the writeup today! If you liked it, please show your appreciation by finding one of her posts and giving it upvotes) Araris was lynched! He was a Jeskeri Cultist and a Convert with a Korathi Pendant! 20. From the album: Oathbringer Jasnah Kholin

My interpretation of Jasnah Kholin! Had a lot of fun making this one. Admittedly, I made the costume before reading the book, so I guessed the fabric colors to be white and yellow (not yellow and orange as is written in the book--oh well). If my photoshop skills were better, I would have photoshopped a shardblade in here...

  24. This is a fork of a hastily-posted and incorrect previous theory that had some very interesting replies. I wanted to write up everything in a new thread with references; special thanks to CaptainRyan, Wandering Investor, lookingglass, Subvisual Haze, and ROSHtaFARian2.0. THEORY: The third Bondsmith is bonded to a large and powerful spren that powers the Urithiru fabrial network. For simplicity, we will refer to this spren as "the Sibling." Three Siblings and Three Bondsmiths In OB Ch 64, Dalinar talks to the Stormfather about the other Bondsmiths: Later, in OB Ch 111, they discuss the three siblings again: It has long been suspected that there are three Bondsmiths because there are three Shards on Roshar. We have long assumed that the Nightwatcher was the second spren, which the Stormfather seems to be confirming in this quote. Following this logic, the conclusion would be that Odium also has a "giant" spren and that the third Bondsmith has the job of wrangling them. I assumed this in my original post, and assumed that the Sibling referenced by the Radiants (see below) was clearly not a voidspren and thus must be the Nightwatcher. However, thanks to the clever people in that thread, I think this must be false. As an aside, in the WoR Ch 44 epigraph we learn that one Bondsmith "was in continual accompaniment of Urithiru." Honor and Cultivation When thinking about Honor and Cultivation, it's important to remember that their Vessels were lovers, so it seems reasonable that they would have children. It would be totally reasonable for the children of Shards to be spren, I think. Based on the Stormfather's language, I think now that the Sibling is a combination of Honor and Cultivation. In retrospect, this makes much more sense than having the Bondsmith be Connected to a big, nasty voidspren. There is no reason to believe it is impossible, but I don't think that Odium would allow a particularly powerful Spren to lend its aid to the enemy. In fact, as the Bondsmiths are the most powerful individuals in Honor's magic system, I find it unnatural that they would be Connected to Odium. The Radiant's thoughts on the Sibling We know much about the Sibling from the gemstones left by the Radiants. They are generically supportive of the entity, which suggests that it is not of Odium or the Unmade. We can also draw some conclusions: I think it safe to assume that the Sibling was a large spren, and either withdrew from men or was forced away (Ch 68 and 70 epigraphs, respectively). Note that zircon is the stone for the Elsecallers, experts on spren and Shadesmar. The Sibling leaving was at least correlated in time with the abandonment of Urithiru and possibly of the Knights themselves (Ch 87 epigraph): The Urithiru fabrial I'm presenting this theory a bit backwards - the original impetus came from my earlier thread and the many good replies therein. Nevertheless, I think much of the logic still hangs together. Urithiru is an interesting place for many reasons. Even in the book, Shallan, Renarin, and Navani have already realized the tower is huge fabrial (Ch 44, 44, and 109): However, they can't simply turn it back on by re-infusing the pillar (Ch 44): This seems to imply that the spren that powered the fabrial is no longer present. It's important to note that the pillar would hold an almost unimaginable amount of Investiture. In fact, if we wanted to store a spren with power on order of the Stormfather, I think we would need something like that pillar. Lastly, the tower provides magical defenses against the Unmade (Ch 73): Cultivation's influence on the tower My original idea had the Nightwatcher pegged as the inhabitant because of the following quotes (Ch 69 and 107): The first seems to imply that growing things in Urithiru was relatively easy up until something went wrong, and the second seems to imply that the issues persist. Urithiru is supposed to be the Knight's stronghold on Roshar, and having a good food source is part of outlasting a siege. As Urithiru was almost certainly created by Honor and probably Cultivation for humans, it would be not very logical to fail to provide a source of food for the tower. But given the climate, plants would ordinarily struggle to grow. A major Splinter of Cultivation living nearby would probably be more than enough to compensate, allowing for plant life. It is entirely possible that the plants growing are just another part of the fabrial network, but this does not change the conclusion if we believe the captured spren would still need to be significantly related to Cultivation. PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER If we take the Stormfather's words literally and keep in mind Honor and Cultivation's romantic relationship, it seems entirely reasonable that the third Sibling is mix of their two powers. This Sibling is mentioned multiple times in reference to Urithiru, which has been established as an enormous fabrial. Putting these together, we can reason that this third Sibling powers the Urithiru fabrial and encourages plant growth. The third Bondsmith bonds this Sibling, which prompts them to stay in Urithiru. When this Sibling leaves Urithiru (either willingly or not), the tower's defenses fail and the Unmade can move in. How and why this occurs, how it is related to the Recreance, and the current status of the Sibling (apart from hurt and asleep) are all up for debate. The importance of Urithiru suggests that someone will need to find the Sibling and convince them to come back. Final thoughts My sincere thanks to everyone in the prior thread who contributed to these ideas. I welcome all commentary, and look forward to learning more. As a postscript, in my mind I imagine the Sibling as a huge warrior in Shadesmar, fighting off the influence of the Unmade.

Tanavast created the Honorblade for the Heralds with the specific purpose of granting Surgebinding. Rayse created a blade of his own. Instead of granting an ability, it's intended to end the Oathpact. Edit: and the gem in the pommel is a sapphire. To match Jezrien. Ten blades for ten Heralds?

  26. Singleminded dedication to a goal could be pretty useful depending on the circumstances. For example, ignoring fear or pain could be useful in dangerous situations, or help you resist torture (assuming you're not deprived of a metalmind). It could also be handy for things like scholarship, if you need to remain focused while searching for some bit of information amid a lot of boring text and you don't want your mind to wander. I imagine it could help fight off certain forms of emotional allomancy as well.

Earlier in they year, my friends and I talked about going as a group, but now they're mostly saying they don't want to go. I don't have a date, so I'd have to awkwardly join a group of people I'm only kind of friends with if I don't want to go alone. That just doesn't sound that fun to me.

That kind of connection independent of physical location (both Syl speaking directly into his thoughts and the windspren being drawn into the cognitive realm) seems to be a theme of the spiritual realm.
