  1. From the album: The Knight Radiant

Hello all, I`ve been planning to draw miss Shallan for some time now, but alas time is never on my side. I`m not sure now most of you imagined a cryptic, but I`ve always had this image of light bend in different shades in our world. I took some liberty with the design as every artist would, but still tried to be as faithful to the book as possible. Hope you enjoy my take on this red haired master of illusion.

  2. Hi all! We here at Shire Post Mint launched Mistborn coins on Kickstarter a few weeks ago: http://kck.st/2wZD4p0 I figured I should introduce us here too! Tom Maringer has been making official coins since 2003 when he started making coins for George R.R. Martin. We've been blown away by the excitement and love that the Cosmere community has shown us since we announced this new project. You guys rock -Helen

  3. Ok i posted a the outline of this to the stormlight discord server but i thought it would be a good idea to reach more sharders , but before that and before i gather more down voting arrows than Kaladin's shield during the tower approach, let me make it clear that this is a joke now that this is settled , lets dive in our protagonist is a brown skinned lower class citizent , acompanied by a snarky and fabulous blue translucent spirit thingy with mystical powers , and a way for nonconventional flight . and dont get me started on the name , it is like Sanderson didnt even try , Kaladin? come on! that is only one letter off for those of you who havent caught on already i am talking about Aladin , yes disney's Aladin , he has the genie and a flying carpet , i am not going to even mention that he crushes on a high born woman. but i guess that kaladin has nipples so atleast that is different , and an important change of his character .... actualy do we know for sure if kaladin has nipples ? can we get a WoB on that please ?

  4. This is a theory on the champion that is based entirely on very little factual evidence. In the WoR the Storm father tells Dalinar to have Odium to use the ancient rules and use a champion. I was wondering if it was possible that the home team’s champion would be chosen by Cultivation seeing as she is the shard that is still alive and unshattered. This would mean the champion would probably be someone on the cultivation half such as Lift or Renarin rather than Kaladin or Dalinar.

  7. Well I was trying to write my BYU application essay on why I love books, and specifically Brandon Sanderson, but my mother feels it doesn't address the question, because apparently books aren't an idea. Which is stupid, because there is nothing that I am more passionate about (besides maybe comics) than books. So, for posterity, here is my exactly 2000 character essay, which I am proud of, but my mother almost deleted. Thank goodness for the undo button.

  9. I always try to seperate a author from their works. Many of my favorite authors have views that I couldn't disagree more with. I guess I will go hypocrite on my previous statement and say there is are two exceptions. The first is L. Ron Hubbard. I usually try really hard to see the good in any type of religion and respect it, but Scientology is twisted and has done some truly awful things. L. Ron Hubbard was its founder. The second is anyone who commits heinous crimes and writes books describing what happened. I cannot support people like that. Other than that I think its good to read authors with different views and try to gain a broader prospective.

  12. It's a bunch of things for me. I was first introduced to Brandon's writing when he was picked to finish the Wheel of Time series. I was absolutely blown away by how good The Gathering Storm was and I knew that I'd have to read some of his own works. I read the WoT books at a deliberately slow pace so by the time I was done, it wasn't that long before I saw Way of Kings on store shelves, saw that it was the beginning of a new series and dove right in. I didn't learn about the nature of the Cosmere until I went back and read the rest of his books in publication order and I started to notice Hoid, then looked things up and had my eyes opened. Anyhow, I started loving him because I got eased into it with an awesome entry in a series that I'd already been following for over a decade by then, then loved his first original work I read, then his subsequent ones and have been hooked ever since. I love his dialogue and his humor, as a nice counterpoint to other series like ASoIaF and Gentleman Bastards that edge more into grimdark territory (which don't get me wrong, I still enjoy, but I like laughing a lot too). And I really love how he constructs magic systems that follow internal rules that let us predict how they'll interact and which forces the characters to come up with clever applications to accomplish their tasks (which we can understand even when we didn't necessarily see them coming in advance) rather than pulling out new powers. So I've had lots of fun with the magic systems he creates. I also really love how open he is about his writing process and getting a look at various draft chapters or incomplete ideas so you can see how the Cosmere as we know it has taken shape in his head over a long time. And lastly and perhaps most importantly when it comes to the Cosmere, I absolutely adore how he does worldbuilding. Individual series can be enjoyed on their own but the more you know about the wider franchise, the more connections you notice and the more enjoyment you get out of the whole experience. And the level of intricate detail and how much potential there is for us to theorize about future developments, new applications of magic systems, crossovers, character motivations, general discussion... it's the sort of thing I really enjoy. As you can probably tell by me being on the Shard at all and just writing several paragraphs on why I love Brandon's books. xD It's also what makes me a huge fan of the Legend of Heroes game series; I like trying to point people playing those in Brandon's direction because the worldbuilding is handled very similarly, just on a continental scale rather than a galactic one.

  14. Before discussing probabilities, I'll try to break down the possible scenarios for Shallan herself for Part 1 (there would be more possibilities but I'll keep things simple). Scenario 1: it becomes generally known (public) that Adolin killed Sadeas. Shallan's options would be to support Adolin (perhaps only secrely), reject/condemn him or to stay neutral. I suspect Dalinar would be highly likely to forbid their relationship to continue and I also wouldn't be surprised if Adolin distances himself from Shallan for her own sake. Scenario 2: Shallan privately finds out that Adolin killed Sadeas. Her options would be: keep quiet and pretend that she doesn't know, to break off her relationship with Adolin without saying why, to try to verify the truth with Adolin and reject/condemn him afterwards, to try to verify the truth with Adolin and support him afterwards, or to go public or to tell Adolin to turn himself in. If Scenario 1 happens, I think Shallan's relationship will be officially broken whether she likes it or not. I think her natural curiosity would lead her to continue to investigate the copy-cat murders though (unless they are already resolved). For Scenario 2, I think the least likely option is that she runs to the authorities or tells Adolin to do the same - Shallan's never done something like that as far as I remember. I don't think she'd be able to simply keep quiet and ignore it either - maybe for a few days but it would be stressful to pretend she doesn't know for a long time. She would want to know the truth. For the other options in Scenario 2 I think we first have to judge what Sadeas was to Shallan. We've not seen much from her about him but I wouldn't be surprised if her reaction to his death was rather like Palona's ("one less problem"). To Shallan, Sadeas should be an "antagonist" or "threat" - he has obviously targeted people that she cares about, she herself has made plans to help neutralise him, and she most likely suffered an "attack" from his side herself (with the bridge drop). For the last point, it's never been confirmed that Shallan knows that Sadeas would be the most likely suspect but it would not be surprising (It'll be interesting to see if Shallan raises this with Ialai). Shallan has also heard Adolin's side about Sadeas back in WoR, she saw that Adolin reacted strangely to the 1st copy-cat murder, she saw that he was strangely attached to the idea that the copy-cat murderer was a different person and has since gotten evidence for that, she saw that Adolin was working hard on the case, and she just recently saw that Adolin feels that he hasn't lived up to Dalinar's expectations and is hiding something from her. So, in a way it shouldn't come as a surprise except that so far Shallan's view of Adolin has been rather rose-tinted. If anything she finds him to be annoyingly perfect. The closest equivalent that I can see in Shallan's past would be when Jasnah killed the robbers, with the biggest difference being that Shallan was there and saw the events herself. Shallan was shocked, angry and upset at the time but she got over it - Shallan was practically worshipping Jasnah by the time we got to WoR. Shallan has also become more open with herself about her own past actions since Jasnah killed the robbers. Putting that all together, I would say that Shallan would be shocked but would get over it sooner or later. I would expect her to confront Adolin about it one way or another. Shallan has never felt threatened by Adolin so I think the only way her opinion of him would go negative is if Adolin reacted very badly, which would be very unlike him. In such a scenario I would actually expect Adolin to break down. In the end, I think Shallan's view of Adolin would become less "rose-tinted" but more "real". btw, if Scenario 2 happens in Part 1 I would still expect Scenario 1 to happen sooner or later. Probably around the time Kaladin returns to Urithiru...

  17. I´ll start this off with a disclaimer: I know there has been a lot of Hoid theories. What I am suggesting will probably be similar to what others have done. It might not even contain anything new at all. But I hope that you guys finds something worthwhile in here. So, here goes, my Hoid theory. The basic idea is as the title suggests. Hoid wants to reforge Adonalsium (which I know isn´t anything new) and he plans to be the Vessel of Adonalsium himself. Hoids Goal in Life We know that Hoid is travelling around the Cosmere. His complete agenda is unknown, but he seems to be gathering magic systems. He stole the Lerasium bead from the Well, and he has dropped a hint about having breaths. Through this, I draw the conclusion that Hoid is interested in gathering different magic systems for himself. Why would he want to do that, except for the fact that it is fun? Well, my theory is that Hoid hopes to be able to reforge Adonalsium, and that he plans to have himself as its vessel. He wishes to gather magic from the sixteen Shards in order to have Connection to all of them, which would make it easier for him to take them all up. As support, I have this WoB: I realize that the question is wether an entirely new Shard would be created, but Sandersons answer is that it is "related" to stuff that is happening. We don´t have anyone we know of with the knowledge, power or amount of magic, nor a sensible motive. Not anyone... except Hoid. Furthermore, Hoid hints at this goal himself, when speaking to Dalinar. He says this right after mentioning Adonalsium to Dalinar. I think that the gibberish words he speaks of are the Shards. They are parts of Adonalsium, cut up and dismembered, and now something similar to Adonalsium, but yet they are different (there are sixteen of them and they are supposedly a lot weaker than Adonalsium was). Then Hoid speaks about pulling a man apart and putting him back together. I think that the "put together" part is where Hoid hints at his goal. He wishes to put together a new Adonalsium, a better one probably. I also think that this theory is supported by his hatred towards Odium, and willingness to stop him. Odium wants to kill all the Shards, and splinter them, in order to be the most powerful thing in the Cosmere. If the Shards are splintered, Hoid will need to reforge them, which will be hard, and take time. He refers to the situation on Sel, with the splinters of Devotion and Dominion, as a mess. As long as Odium is alive, Hoids plans will be threatened. Why would Hoid want to do this? But what is Hoids motive then? Why is he doing this? Well, first I thought that he disagreed with the sixteen who shattered Adonalsium, but then I decided against that. I think Hoid encouraged the Shattering. Here is a part of the Letter, written by Frost (supposedly) to Hoid concerning Rayse. Of course, this could mean many things. But I think Frost talks about Rayse being the vessel of Odium, and that he considers that his own and Hoids fault. I agree. Hoid encouraged the Shattering, and encouraged Rayse to go after Adonalsium. He could have taken a Shard for himself, too: But he didn´t take a Shard, probably because he didn´t want to be consumed by an intent. This is where we reach the most speculation-heavy part: Hoid wanted a new Adonalsium all along. We know that the sixteen felt a dire need to shatter Adonalsium, so things can´t really have been awesome on Yolen before the Shattering. I think that Hoid found Adonalsium a bad ruler/god/whatever. But at the same time, he feels that there is a need for someone to rule the Cosmere. And he thinks that he himself will do the best job. Hoid manipulated the Vessels to shatter Adonalsium in order to be able to reforge it, and rule the Cosmere, and becoming a great king/god, which would benefit everyone. Okay. Thats it, basically. What do you guys think? Have you seen all this before? Do you agree/disagree? I´d love to hear thoughts, or see this be ripped apart. Either way, thanks for reading.

  19. A simple set of directions, given to Dalinar by Honor in mystical visions. Dalinar interprets this command of Honor as instructions to unite the Alethi princes, or possibly the monarchs of the world. From the Oathbringer chapters we've read so far, this plan is not working very well for Dalinar. Our first impulse would be to assume that Dalinar is overly concerned about leaders of the world instead of uniting the human populations of Roshar. But the deeper truth hiding in plain sight is that Honor's commands are not human-race specific. What Honor truly desires to be accomplished on Roshar is an end of the cycle of hate between humanity and The Listeners. When Honor says "unite them", he is referring to all sentient life on Roshar. Thus my sort of long-winded theory, which I do think has the benefit of explaining several mysteries on Roshar: The Recreance and the death of Honor were a direct result of the cruel physical and mental enslavement of the Listener people. Just as not all humans became or served with the Knights Radiant, so too did individual Listeners have the capacity to choose to embrace the powerful and dark forms offered by Odium or to remain in more conventional non-war forms. Individual Listeners with reason to loathe humanity, or feeling desperation/hatred from human attacks may join the armies of the desolation, but my thought is that these were probably a minority. The majority of Listeners likely cared only about trying to survive the desolations, and while no Listener has become a KR, it is possible individuals may have offered their assistance as squires or general soldiers/support. A lingering animosity likely existed between the human and listener races, but the nature of the desolations was not a conflict fundamentally between humans and listeners, but rather between Odium and life itself. Following the Final Desolation, the 9 Heralds abandoned the Oathpact. Not all of them appear to have abandoned their positions of authority over the Knights Radiant though. Nale currently operates as direct patron to the Skybreakers, but he himself seems to justify his actions according to the visions and plans of Ishar. Ishar and his madness (and possible outright traitorous nature) are the likely source of the current great conflicts on Roshar. In an effort to break the Oathpact and prevent future desolations Ishar had a 2-part solution. First he worked with the Bondsmiths and through some great magical calamity locked the Listener people into near-mindless slaveform and allowed their mass-enslavement by humanity. Perhaps this event was the "wicked thing of eminence", and may also be somehow linked to the magical destruction of The Shattered Plains. The results of this action were morally horrifying: the collective enslavement physically and mentally of nearly the entire Listener species. Faced with the mass enslavement of the Listeners being carried out by the human kingdoms, the Knights Radiant found that they could not condone such actions, and abandoned their orders and oaths in what became known as the recreance. The "death" of so many KR bonded spren, along with the shock of Honor's Herald granted powers being used for such dishonorable ends weakened Honor to the point that Odium was able to kill him. Following these events Ishar instructed Nale and the hidden Skybreakers to hunt down other surgebinders both to prevent a new desolation as well as fearing that they might disrupt the Listener-enslavement status quo. At the present time Odium has played his hand perfectly. Dalinar was incorrectly convinced that the Everstorm would turn the Parshmen en masse into Voidbringers, and by communicating his message around the world has likely convinced many of Roshar's rulers that the newly mentally liberated parshmen need to be violently suppressed and re-enslaved. Doing so merely feeds into the cycle of hatred between humans and listeners though, which benefits Odium in the end. What is truly necessary to survive the desolation is to find a way to break the cycle of hatred, and unite the humans and listeners in the cause of mutual survival in the face of the Everstorm. This theory also offers insight into what Gavilar was attempting to accomplish (and very poorly conveying to Eshonai) in our new prologue: Although Gavilar is missing the mark here regarding the return of the Heralds (in a tragically ironic fashion - not realizing that they both haven't left and are the source of the problem he is trying to correct), he does seem to understand that enslavement of the parshmen is a thing needing to be reversed. Kaladin currently seems well on the way to understanding that the Listeners are not a group of irredeemable monster shock troops in Odium's army, but are individuals that his own oaths of protection oblige him to try to help. How he will balance this with the demands of the Alethi who just recently revered him as a hero and likely want the return of their slaves will be another moral tribulation for poor Kaladin. It is a positive sign though that so far Syl has not voiced any moral objections to Kaladin's path thus far, indicating that his intentions are not off base with those of an honorspren. Hopefully Dalinar reaches a similar conclusion about the nature of this war very quickly, before the human-listener infighting becomes even worse. Ultimately I also like this theory because it tackles a common problem in Fantasy: the irredeemably evil orc-like race that our heroes can murder en masse with no moral qualms. I have faith that the listeners/parshmen are not going to be portrayed in that way. There is a solution to this conflict beyond enslaving or killing their entire race.

  23. Stick Edit: In all seriousness, I love Brandon because A his works are never what you expect, and B, because he's the most enjoyable to read. His characters are always well developed, you end up loving every single one of them, even the bad guys, and you can't help but smile when they start bantering. (Unlike some authors where you end up intensely hating half the cast.) I always get excited about the climax, I'm always surprised by his twists. He just does it... well. He does it in the best possible way.

  29. In a world where gritty, dark, and "everyone is evil" fantasy has been big, Brandon's work is a breath of fresh air. It has real heroes. He also isn't afraid of high complexity in his novels and treats his readers as if we're intelligent. As for the man himself, one thing that strikes me about Brandon is that he really is one of us. He's a fan first.

  30. Have you finished the books? If not, read no further. In answer to your actual question, the Windrunners have access to the Surge of Adhesion (the full lashing), while Skybreakers have the Surge of Division, which we haven't seen yet. They share the Surge of Gravitation, which allows the basic lashing, thus why they can both fly and walk on walls.

  33. There have been systems with professional jurors before. As with any system, there are upsides and downsides. With professional jurors, you do gain expertise but also have a higher chance of corruption. If you want to buy off a jury, it's a lot easier to do it when the pool of potential jurors is known in advance. Additionally, it's harder for professional jurors to remain impartial due to their closeness to the system and need to maintain a working relationship with the court and both sides of the bench. Your attorney pissed off some of the jurors last week? Don't expect a fair trial.

  39. One thing I feel is not being treated clearly: Dalinar's inability to remember his wife must be strictly a magical barrier. If it was a physical 'wound' in any sense, there is no scientific explanation I've heard of that would make him unable to hear her name or look at a painting of her. Maybe that's obvious, but I see comments here and there that suggest otherwise. So my best guess is the nature of his boon/curse can only be removed magically, and I'm unconvinced basic stormlight healing cuts the mustard. Another point I think is interesting is this: based on what I've come to expect from Brandon, we have most likely already seen Dalinar's boon/curse in action (the not Evi one). Which means its staring us in the face O.O PS. I'm of the opinion Evi was his boon. We know that the loss of his wife was a heavy memory, and it seems to me to fit dramatically that he would seek to forget her. Can't wait to find out though

  41. I have developed a new theory, one accounting for the purple chart in Way of Kings that is so similar to the Radiant chart. I call it: The Knights Absorbent The Voidbinding equivalent of the Knights Radiant Premise The Way of Kings comes with two similar chart illustrations included within. One is a chart detailing the ten Surges, and the glyphs for the ten orders of Knights Radiant, who are Surgebinders. It is highly likely the purple chart corresponds to the Voidbinders. On the chart (seen below), we have ten corresponding icons to the Surges, and ten corresponding Glyphs for the Orders. Thus, there must be equivalents to the Surges and the Knights Radiant - enter the Knights Absorbent. Logic The term given to the users of Surges are called Surgebinders. Why are they called Surges? When a Surgebinder activates their abilities, they begin by concentrating Stormlight and gathering power. This high concentration of power leaks from them, and they can release it through Surgebinding. The Surge in Surgebinding is this concentration of power release - the power is Surging. We know that the opposing force is called Voidbinding. It stands to reason then, that the opposite of the ten Surges would be the ten Voids. Indeed, we can see that the glyphs for the Voids are oppositely symmetrical as compared to the Surges. If Surges are an increased concentration, it makes sense that Voids are the opposite - a lack, an area of decreased concentration. We can logically see then that Voidbinding creates a low density area where Surgebinding created a high density area. The Knights Radiant earned their name by their Radiance. Nothing is more sensible. They Radiate light and power, because of how a concentration works - it wants to diffuse into areas of lower concentration (e.g. everything else in this case) Voidbinding then, would have the opposite effect. Nearby concentrations of power would seem to be drawn into the Voidbinder, it would seem that instead of Radiating, they Absorb. The ten Glyphs of the Knights Radiant demand an equal and opposing order of Knights from the Voidbinders ten glyphs. If the Knights Radiant are termed such because they radiate, then we must call this opposing order the Knights Absorbent. But without the Heralds to model themselves after, any spren with which they bonded would have no shape on which to base their Shardblade, no form on which to base their Shardplate. No, they could not have made Shardplate or Blade at all - they must look to the weaponry which defines their order. The Knights Absorbent and then spren then, must be equipped with a deadly weapon, well known to many, which comes from an item with an absorbency like no other: The cardboard tube sword taken from a roll of paper towels. This weapon has a long history, of being used both in mighty wars and conflicts, and by some of the most renowned duelists in history. It is truly a weapon with an unimpeachable past, with a Bounty of techniques passed down from father to son through the ages. But what of Shardplate? The Knights Absorbent must have armor as well, but not hard armor to stop a blow - no, they must have armor that absorbs all impacts, armor that can take any punishment given to them, armor which has been associated with cardboard tube swords for eons. Yes, it must be pillow armor. There is no other option, and the evidence is clear. Below, we display an artist's rendition of the fearsome Knights Absorbent, which we will likely not see for several books. Beware of spoilers! And beware of nightmares, for their depiction is truly the stuff of terror. Radiants be warned, your doom is at hand! Sources: All Evidence comes directly from the purest of Logic and the Gospel of Brandon, may the Everstorm Reign forever.
