  1. Hey everyone! For the past few years there has been a lot of discussion on the Words of Brandon situation. The Theoryland Interview Database served our fandom well but it has always been more a part of the Wheel of Time fandom and has grown harder to keep up-to-date as our fandom has grown and aged. The subject of a new database has been brought up a number of times but myself and the other admins have either remained quiet in those discussions or been unhelpfully vague. And there is a reason for that. We have been working on something. In fact, we've been working on a replacement for a long time, and we've iterated our implementation for a while. We've scrapped a few bad implementations, so we did not want to prematurely announce something that wasn't good. But, we have a system now. It's real, and it's pretty cool, so it's time to start talking about this with you all. The software is codenamed Palanaeum (though that won't be the name of this database; it's the software's name), and it's been made by coder extraordinaire Mestiv, who you may have noticed has a new rank on the site due to his tireless work on it. Our goals with a new WoB Archive have been to not just replicate the Theoryland Interview Database, but add new features and improve upon Theoryland. Let's talk about what Palanaeum does. Submitting interviews open to everyone A core problem with the Theoryland DB is that only a select few input things, which means it is almost always outdated. (Turns out, Brandon talks a lot.) The solution is obvious: we need a system that allows the many awesome and enterprising members of the community to contribute. Palanaeum does this. Anyone can contribute, input new events and entries, and suggest changes to old things. Transcribing audio The workflow for transcribing audio has been clunky. The audio has to be uploaded and then there's a Google doc where transcribers work at it, with the link to the Google doc being buried in an Event topic somewhere. We can imagine that in a year or two it can be very hard to find the original audios and the transcription Google doc. This is not sustainable. Palanaeum puts that entire process in-house. You can upload audio and transcribe it within the system. You can create "snippets" of audio that links the timestamp of the audio to the question/answer you are writing. Since the audio and transcription are connected in the system, this means for new interviews inputted this way, you'll have a Play button next to an entry which will just play the audio source of that exact question. We intend to host all this audio forever, so it won't be lost to the aether. It will be in our system and you'll always be able to find it. We also intend to allow people to do similar things with video sources, but video is significantly more costly to host, so you'll have to upload videos--or link to videos--on YouTube, then transcribe them similarly. Huge props to Mestiv for creating this crazy feature. I wasn't sure this would be possible, but it absolutely works. It's hard for me to describe to you how awesome this actually is. Search that doesn't suck Lastly, there's another problem with Theoryland: it's really hard to actually find the thing you want, so obviously we want to have a search feature that works well. (This is one of the core reasons we wanted to build a new system in the first place.) Search is complicated but we have an implementation we like. It will have a lot of search filters as well to narrow down your search, too. A big benefit to us doing this in-house is that the search algorithm can be iterated on. If we launch and you think it's being weird and not giving you reasonable results, we will work on it. We don't have to say, "well, that's how it works. Sorry about that." Since there's an account system on Palanaeum, we want you to be able to favorite particular quotes for later. We think that will really help research for theories or writing wiki articles. That's an area we intend to work on. Oh, and one more thing: this software will have a responsive design, which means you can find all the quotes you want on your phone. The software will be open source, too. If you're an enterprising coder, you can contribute to the project. If you're a different fandom, you can install it for your use, too! The software probably won't be open source immediately, as Mestiv wants to clean up his code a bit before opening it up. But soon after launch, it will be open source. Where we go from here We plan to show the WoB Archive to many awesome individuals in the community who already transcribe stuff so they can test and give feedback on things. This will be our beta period. We're just about there, so very soon this will be out there in June. We have a list of people we are inviting, so hang tight! We want to show you this ASAP. We're starting small for now (especially compared to the fandom at large), but you'll all see this soon! Overall, our goal is to have the software done--with the core functionality listed above, at least, completed and well-tested--by the Oathbringer release. Obviously, that's where there will be a massive spike in new interviews, so all our transcribing stuff needs to be very good there. So, Oathbringer is our deadline. But our progress is going very well, so we may end the beta period early and have our official launch earlier. We'll see. Lots can happen in software development. You'll notice that we didn't include any screenshots of the system for now. That's not to conceal anything--it does work, and it's pretty cool--but right now our design team hasn't begun work on making it pretty. Function comes first. The usual 17S design team will work on making it look and feel good this summer, and then we can show more off We intend to import all Brandon-related interviews from Theoryland to this new system. We're hoping we don't need to manually input things and we can do a software-based conversion of the data, but we are committed to a system that is complete and will be up-to-date. We hope you will join us on this quest to archive everything Brandon has said in this difficult time of transition from Theoryland to this system. But, I think this system will finally be the interview archive we all need. With your help, we will be able to keep things up-to-date for years to come. The era of long lag on things being inputted into the database will be over. (Of course, we will be working hard too.) We're sorry it's taken so long. Big thanks to Weiry, who tirelessly works to make sure everything is perfect. Even bigger thanks to Mestiv who is finally making this a reality. Also major thanks to Joe who coded an implementation of a database as well and is always awesome. He helped us move towards a custom coded solution, which I always worried would be too difficult. But it's real now, and I'm insanely excited to show you all this.

  2. From the album: The Emperor's Soul - Visual Development

Here is my visual interpretation of the Imperial Prison (or more like: a part of it), designed to keep forgers locked up securely. As I am not sure how many of you here about behind the scenes/concept work for the entertainment industry, a short explanation: The photo references on the side are additional explanation and texture information for people who might translate the 2D concept into a 3D work (i.e. for a computer game or animated movie). In this case there are obviously not for any real production but as I am using this as a portfolio project, that's how I am going to present it anyway.

  6. Allomancer Senn Conrad looked disconsolately at the table. It was sparsely laid - a sign of the hard times his house had fallen into. Of course, there was no danger of going hungry. The fields full of skaa were proof against that eventuality. But his father's reckless trading ventures had embeggared the house, and upon his death, Senn had inherited a house nearly in default on numerous loans. By the skin of his teeth and a few well-timed lucky breaks, he had made it through. The only loans remaining were in the process of being paid off. His trading network was beginning to grow again. House Conrad had a future. Until now. He turned the letter over and over in his hands. The missive was fairly worded, but loaded with innuendo all the same. The message was clear. His daughter was to be married off to create a merger with a client house of Venture, one of the most powerful of the Great Houses. The marriage would have been a light thing had his only son not died the previous month. His daughter could have carried on the family line, of course, made sure that there still remained a House Conrad when he was gone. But the terms of the marriage contract demanded by Straff - the odious head of an odious House! - denied that possibility. In a couple of decades, there would not be a Conrad. Perhaps he could marry again, have another son? But Venture was notoriously ruthless against those who defied their wishes. And, as Venture had recently purchased the last of his loans from House Erikeller, there were direct forms of compulsion they could apply... Well, what they didn't know was that he had saved just enough funds to pay off the debts. There would be nothing left to expand the business, which was why he hadn't cleared the books yet. It was only a year's worth of payments left, and he could leverage that money to ensure their future prosperity. But, given the circumstances, a cash-strapped House with no debt was better off than a flush House with Venture pulling it's strings. After all, what could Straff do about it once the debt was paid? Welcome to LG34: Allomancer! The players are members of the manor guard of House Conrad, a minor client house of House Venture. The House Lord is pushing back against Venture's attempts to meddle in his business, and as a response, House Venture has sent an elite team of infiltrators to ensure Lord Conrad's compliance. "Convenient" raids by skaa rebels have managed to destroy the most recent shipment of Allomantic metals, and the guard captains have given strict orders to prevent metal hoarding. Metals are supposed to be kept in the guard's vault. Of course, this has the effect of creating a black market of metal trading among the guardsmen, and even the non-Allomancers are getting in on the action. As the stakes rise, nobody knows who they can trust, and who might just stab them in the back. 8. To everyone who has heard mentions of Snakes, or Paranoia, or Trust, and has no idea what those things are, here's an explanation. Paranoia began as a simple joke in the LG23 elim doc. El, one of the elims, was waiting for turnover. Alv made a remark about it, and El took it one step further. Alv and Wilson built on that and tormented El with mentions of Paranoia the Snake for the rest of the doc. Since then, Paranoia and Trust have been part of the overarching metanarrative. This page is dedicated to Elbereth's overactive imagination, which started it all. Next page in progress

  9. From the album: The Emperor's Soul - Visual Development

For my new portfolio project, I decided to do some Visual Development artwork based on Brandon Sanderson’s novella „The Emperor’s Soul“. I did my best to stick to the descriptions I found in the book, with some artistic license where necessary, or whenever I couldn't find much visual descriptions. I will try to keep my descriptions spoiler free, but I hope everyone who read the book will recognize the art. To kick it off, here is a key scene of Shai & Gaotona in Shai's room. More to come!

  10. LG33: Term 7, Month 1 - Friendship Eolah and Ryth huddled together in the cold, trying to breathe in as much of each other’s warmth as they were able. “What’re you doing in my corner?” a voice drawled from above them. Eolah looked up first. “We’ve been in this corner for the past week, sir, and never seen you?” The mercenary picked her up by the throat. “Is that insolence I’m hearing?” “N-no s-sir,” she tried to choke out. Ryth came to his feet. “Let her go!” he demanded. She’d been the only one to show him kindness since he broke out, the only friend he could remember. The merc looked down. “Why should I?” Ryth hesitated, looking small. “Because... because she’s my friend?” The mercenary laughed. “Fine, then.” He tossed Eolah against the wall. Ryth heard a crack and gasped. Still laughing, the mercenary drew his sword and skewered Ryth, too. “How’s that for friendship, filthy little beggar?” Ryth staggered and fell atop Eolah, whose blood was already beginning to pool in the alleyway. “Goodbye,” she whispered weakly. “Goodbye, friend,” he responded. They died in the same moment, friends to the last breath. Amelia ran. I’m alive. I’m alive, I’m alive, I’m not dead, I’m alive! The streets were dark around her, but she was nearly laughing. She wasn’t sure whether that was exhilaration or hysteria. She’d seen the stroke headed for her. The glint of deadliness about to plunge into her neck- but it’d been stopped. She was saved. She was alive! She slid to a halt, panting. Running out of a tavern away from anyone who could help probably hadn’t been the best idea. She looked around her. Particularly when you not only run away, but end up somewhere and have absolutely no idea where you are... She shivered, but at least there was no sign of an assassin around. Or, indeed, anyone. With nothing better to do, she sat down to wait for morning. Eolhondras and Silverblade were killed by Mercenaries! They were Students, and Eol had studied in Artificery! BR was attacked (by an Assassin), but didn’t die! EDIT: Cluny was elevated! Term 7 has begun. You have 42 hours to send in actions. Player List 1. Queensteph - Vintish Noblewoman 2. 12. Could Autonomy be acting out against Harmony specifically because his first acts as a Shard were to remake the world, erase the biological differences between Skaa and Noble, and make an environment that destroyed the need of the Elendel basin to advance. Harmony removed incentive for technological growth and lowered the needs of the people the basin from needing Autonomy from the gifts of their worlds shard. Could Bavadin/Autonomy see this as making them dependent/subservient, and thus require her intervention?

  14. Yes FINALLY I've been waiting and stalking every single SE in order to learn how to do this. I'll be... I'll be Barry Allen. For simplicity but if only there were feruchemists. Then I could be a steel runner and be thematically appropriate. But alas, that would be too obvious. And I would get too excited and Blab. Ok so when does this thing start? Does it start when LG33 ends?

I love you guys!!! And I can't wait until contributions are opened up, make use of my love of researching WoBs. In terms of name - how about The Words of Founding? You know, coz that was a collection of statements with implications for the Cosmere and Realmatics, handed down by a god to his faithful subjects to make the world a better place, and that people spend hours deciphering to determine their true meaning

  17. My favorite scenes, in order, at least at the moment (order may change, somewhat, depending on my mood at the time): 1) Bridge Four rescuing Dalinar and company from Sadeas' betrayal. 2) Kaladin and Adolin's duel against four Shardbearers. (It also has the best line in the series: Kaladin's "Honor is dead. But I'll see what I can do." 3) Jasnah interviewing Shallan to be her ward. 4) Kaladin strung up in the Highstorm; or more accurately, the immediate aftermath. But I also love the description of Syl doing what she can to part the winds. 5) Syl bringing Kaladin a leaf. 6) Kaladin swearing his second Ideal. 7) Dalinar coming to grips with the fact that there's no way he could beat Szeth, either now or in the past. It's maybe worth noting that five of the seven scenes involve Kaladin -- is he my favorite character because he gets so many great scenes, or do I think his scenes are better because he's my favorite character? (Do windspren cause the wind, or are they attracted to it?). I'm sure other people get good scenes, too...but I'd probably have to reread the books to remember them. These ones come pretty much immediately to mind.

  19. Like many Sharders, I dream of writing a meta-series of interconnected fantasy epics -- a Cosmere all my own. (Brandon seems to have this effect on many of his readers.) Today, I’d like to share some fragmented concepts from my giant setting: the Panstellation. Here’s an artist’s rendition of the Panstellation (a rank, arrogant, amateur artist’s rendition). The Panstellation is solar system of solar systems. Nine stars, each orbited by several class-M planets. And all the stars orbit something called the Forge. See the big purple emission nebula? See the litte black nebula that obscures part of it? See the little glowy thing inside the black? That’s the Forge. Here’s a close-up: It’s bigger than the biggest stars, and it’s the source of all magic in the Panstellation. Its magical radiation pools in the souls of the planets, fueling the magic systems that their inhabitants enjoy. Planets closer to the Forge enjoy stronger ambient radiation. They are high-magic settings, where demigod-level characters are commonplace. On the outer rim, magic is scarcer, and people more likely to compensate with advanced technology. And there’s plenty of diversity in between. Most planets are inhabited by humans, but a few feature more alien peoples. And the humans have supernatural diversity: I imagine that different planetary conditions (climates, gravities, magics, etc.) have produced variations on the human body that don’t exist on Earth. The following is an in-universe letter. It’s basically my version of Sazed’s epigraphs from Hero of Ages. I’m imagining a pretty straightforward epic trilogy, set fairly early in the grand timeline of the Panstellation. It’s set on a world fairly close to the Forge. The bad guy, already a sorcerer, well-versed in the local magic systems, has managed to attain godlike power by drawing energy from within the Forge itself (rather than from his own planet, like he’s supposed to). At the trilogy’s end, this villain is defeated, and his Forge-power-extraction mechanism is destroyed. But we’re not out of the woods, yet. When he stole power from the Forge, he unwittingly created a critical imbalance, which will eventually kill the Forge, and probably destroy the universe. And so one of the Trilogy’s heroes must save the day again, this time by making the ultimate sacrifice. He must take hold of the stolen power, ascend to virtual godhood himself, and return said power to the Forge. Much like Sazed, he’s managed to write some things down in the process. Enjoy! And... that’s that. At the center of the universe lies the Forge, encircled by the Panstellation. I designed this whole backstory to explain why magic works the way it does. I know I haven't explained any magic systems, but when I do, you'll find they're all very consistent and rule-based, but still whimsical and mystical. The idea is that all Forge-derived magic, like the Forge itself, is composed of both Chaos and Order. Being Chaos, it can defy reality and do the impossible; being Order, it always operates within the bounds of its own rule-system. If people are interested in this, I can post some more of my half-baked plans and ideas for this setting. Other than that, I appreciate any thoughts and comments. Thanks for reading!

  20. Hi everyone first time posting here, I just finished reading WOK and WOR (my first Sanderson books) both of which I absolutely loved. When I found out that book 3 was still months away I went on a Coppermind spree and was just amazed by the scope of the Cosmere. I really need to start reading the rest of Sanderson's novels. Anyways, I stumbled upon the Shattering's page where it read "Brandon has stated that he currently imagines it[the shattering] to be about 6,000 years before the Stormlight Archive Prelude, or 11,000 years before The Way of Kings" To my understanding Odium went about killing other shards after the shattering. I assume this took some time so it is unlikely that he started the Desolations immediately after the shattering. However, let's say that Odium did in fact begin desolating Roshar right after the shattering. 6000 (years before the prelude) divided by 99 (desolations) gives us = Roughly 60 years between desolations. This brings me to my 2 questions. 1) Why is it that the most recent period between desolations has lasted 4500 years? Previous periods were definitely shorter and there were 10 heralds as compared to only 1 now. 2) Many times in the books it is referenced that much knowledge is lost between desolations. How is that possible? A teen aged 20 during a desolation would be 80 by the time his/her second desolation came. He/she would pass along firsthand knowledge of the desolation to his children and grandchildren. Assuming his descendants survived their first desolation they would realise "rust, gramps wasn't lying, we should probably prepare for another desolation" In this way surely knowledge like being able to cast bronze would be retained through communities, let alone kingdoms. Apologies if this topic has been done before or if I am using outdated info. Thanks!

  22. Probably nothing major. (Actually, there are spoilers in the OP if you know where to look, but not major ones.) Garshin (from LG32) will be in this game (though I'll make sure to use spoiler tags for any major spoilers he'd produce, being from 300 years in the future). By the way, when is the game starting? And, just to clarify: The role and starting spike distribution is (at least as far as we know) the same between the Loyal Guardsmen and Venture Agents, right?

  25. It seems to me like the bond to the Oathstone was mostly 'honor' not magical since 1) it was Szeth's willingness to obey with exactness that led Nin to him, 2) Szeth mentions that he could have and almost did attack Taravangian while he held his Oathstone. I think he also mentioned it somewhere that he wasn't technically forced to obey, but that it was his own choice since he was Truthless (after all, he 'could have stopped the killing at any time').

  26. I don't think @gbazz4 means that a relationship between Kaladin and Shallan would be distasteful because of the characters themselves, but more because of the cliche nature of such a relationship. I mean come on, it's like every story ever where the two protagonists can't stand each other and then somehow fall in love. Because of Brandon's skill I imagine that Shaladin would be a lot more believable than the typical cliche, I even believe I'd grow to like it, but it still stinks of the bandwagon. Adolin and Shallan's relationship right now is pretty shallow. Granted. But isn't that where all relationships start? I like them

  27. I met Brandon as a BYU student in the early 2000s, just before he signed the deal on Elantris, and it's been great to watch his success blossom over the years. My own daughter is almost 11 now. She has a complicated disability (DiGeorge syndrome) and getting her to try anything new or do anything on request is almost always an exhausting endeavor. She cries, she whines, she throws tantrums, she refuses. She also has pretty severe ADHD and it's hard to get her to pay attention to anything. Earlier this year, I told her we were going to begin reading Alcatraz versus the Evil Librarians. She threw her usual fit, but I insisted. She whined throughout the first half of the book whenever it was time to read, and I just kept telling her that if she wasn't sold by the end of the book, we wouldn't read the others. But towards the last 1/2 to 1/3 of the book, a change came over her. She was clearly interested. When Alcatraz unleashed the dinosaurs onto the library to help him make his final escape, she quipped, "They're not 'useless' now!" I was surprised she had been paying attention and could remember that detail. Last week, she asked to bring the book to school so she could share it for show-and-tell. We finished the book this morning, and I gave her a choice for our next book: Book 2 of Alcatraz, Little Shop of Hamsters by R. L. Stine, or Holes by Louis Sachar. She picked Book 2 of Alcatraz, no hesitation about it, and urged me to order ALL of the books in the series ASAP. I then let her know that her mother knew the author before she was born, and she began begging to meet him. "Well, he technically has met you a few times, but you were a baby." "He needs to see how much I've grown!" she said. Anyhow, looks like I need to pay attention to Brandon's event schedule so that I can take his newest young fan to meet him next time he's in Chicago. It's really wonderful to see my daughter getting enthusiastic about a book series; there have been so few. The pictures in the reprinted series are also really wonderful and help her pay attention, so I'm grateful that detail was added. I'm glad Brandon's magic won her over.

  33. The full quote, for those interested: "through" is an interesting phrase, almost as if Scadrial was just a pit stop. Overall, I suspect that Scadrial is primarily a consumer of off-world goods, like flowers and such that can't be grown in the Final Empire. There might also be colonies from other worlds (Remember, there is a Kenton St in Luthadel), who would pay for stuff from their homes. When my family was in Mexico, whenever we'd take a trip up to the States, we'd stock up on good American peanut butter. Or maybe it's more of a straightforward black market, with guns or Breath or something like that. I don't think Scadrial has anything to offer, except for the services of kandra. But since they work for atium because of their secret allegiance, I don't think they'd be interested in going off-world.

  34. I'd always thought he was talking more about the logistics of trading rather than any particular product. Afterall countries on earth trade for everything I never felt the product being shipped off world was in any way special. Since Kelsier had made it impossible to worldhop via the pits then it would have made ANY kind of trade almost impossible, potentially destroying a mercantile system. I doubt your average worldhopping merchant would be willing to pull a Hoid and use the well since ruin was still focussed there at that point. I guess I need to go back and look for what the actual import/export could be.

  35. The end of WoR was quite incredible. So many favorites to choose from for me come from this part of the book, but first that comes to mind is the scene where... Two books worth of character development coming together to create what is for me one of the most powerful chapters of fiction in recent (perhaps longer) memory.

  38. So . . . I used to have a thread for this stuff but I don't feel like resurrecting it. Meh. After moving I found a bunch of only folders of drawing and realized that they really sucked and I can do way better now. So, I decided to redraw this picture of myself from about a year ago: I was super proud of it when I made it, but now . . . Not so much. The line art's bad, and the proportions are off, so I look like a seven year old . . . Yeah. So I redrew it. I decided it would be fun, instead of basing it off of the clothes and hairstyle I had a year ago, to go off of my clothes and hair now: I did it in a drawing software called krita, since I havent found all my art supplies yet. Besides the fact that I made myself too pretty, I'm really happy with it.

  39. LG33: Term 6, Month 2 - Healing Noremac Quwester. A quaint name, that. Very newfangled. He’d have to find a new one now. No, wait. Master Noremac Quwester, of course. The Skindancer smiled slowly. Becoming Master Physicker had been quite the stroke of luck. Not that it had been difficult to impress the past Physicker with his medical knowledge, naturally. He was quite... intimately... aware of the internal mechanics of the human body. But remaining in the University long enough to manage such a feat had been difficult, certainly. It walked towards the door to Dele Fajro’s room, stepping softly down the hallway. The payoff had been well worth it. The meaning of life, almost, it snickered to itself. To heal the world, just like the former Master Physicker had always dreamed. It agreed, wholeheartedly: to heal the world of the cancer of humanity. Jay didn’t want to be a mercenary. Sure it was better than being an assassin, killing people indiscriminately, all for a few coins, but it still wasn’t a nice job. It was long hours, and he wasn’t able to see his family so long as he was working, Jay reached into his vest pocket, directly over his heart, and pulled out a picture that he had been given by his son. It was a nice, if crudely drawn, picture of his family, all holding hands. The picture was what kept Jay going all of this time. He hand been away from his family for quite a few months now, and was the only reminder had really had of them. A loud crash sounded from just out of the room, and Jay ran over to investigate, tucking the picture back into his pocket. Jay readied his sword, and thought about his family. He would not let his wife become a widow, he would not let his kids loose their father, he would not die. The door came down with a crash, and Jay dashed towards the assailant. His sword struck out at where the assailant should have been, but he met only air. Before Jay knew it, a knife suddenly penetrated his lungs. Jay dropped to the ground, blood pouring out of the wound. He knew he was going to die. Jay reached his hand into his pocket, and struggled to pull out this picture of his family, wanting it to be the last thing that he saw on this earth. The picture finally came free, but it was covered with blood. Jay quickly unfolded it, hoping that some part of the picture would not be covered with blood. And that is where Jay died, staring at a piece of paper, the only color visible on it was the strong crimson of blood. Jay’s death hadn’t stopped “Noremac”, but it had slowed him enough that Dele was awake by the time he entered her room. “What do you want?” she asked, frightened. “Hello, little girl,” it said. “Well, you see, you’re just an expelled student. No one cares for you anymore, do they? It doesn’t matter if you go insane. You’ll just stay up here, forgotten, until you die.” “How... pleasant.” Dele said flatly, slowly reaching under her pillow. The Skindancer grew tired of exchanging pleasantries. Ha! Get it? Pleasant, pleasantries, it’s a pun! Apparently the little bit of the real Noremac’s memories that were still left still liked that irritating humour. It rolled its eyes and lunged. Dele brought out a dagger from underneath her pillow, plunging it into the Skindancer’s chest. It burned. Fire, pain, darkness consuming its vision, poison spreading down its veins panic burning freezing ice hot pain like a thousand nettles hatred pain anger pain disbelief pain Dele watched the Skindancer slide to the ground, still stuck on her iron dagger. “Ow,” it whimpered. pain pain p a i n Then she was left with two corpses and a whole lot of mess. Burnt was attacked, but protected! HH was killed! He was a Skindancer Master Physicker! Credit goes to Drought for Jay's writeup. Term 6, Month 2 has begun. You have 42 hours to send in actions. 42. I would like a huge chunk of lerasium, a chasmfiend, and 2 hemalurgic spikes the size of a tree. First, I'd hemalurgically spike the chasmfiend. Then I'd feed it half the lerasium, and eat the other half myself, so I could control it with Soothing. And whenever somebody tries to pull the "I am a stick" joke around me, I'll command my chamfiend allomancer to eat them.

  43. Brandon has been notoriously hard to pin down on whether the person who showed up at the end of The Way of Kings is actually the Herald Taln. Brandon only refers to him as, the man called Taln. But why? In his latest FAQFriday, Brandon suggested that who he is will be answered soon, presumably in Oathbringer. Since that is still months away, this is my theory. The Taln that returned was the real Taln, except that the thousands of years he spent fighting Odium has literally burned away his Identity, so that what is left is mainly a shell. If this is true, then the question is, what do you do with a Herald, that has no Identity left?

  46. I don't really know how to look up WoB but there is one where he said that Elsecalling is not precise even if you are practiced at it. I imagine this is because distances and locations in the cognitive realm are not identical to the physical realm counterparts. So you can elsecall to a specific street intersection but you may not end up on the corner you want because maybe the famous gas station there is bigger in the cognitive realm and throws off where you appear. Also I feel like people think of it like anime teleporting while I think it's more like the mass teleport in warcraft 3 where it is a slow obvious build up. It's not something you use quickly as a surprise.

  47. The Cosmere character I relate the most to is Adolin. I relate to his outgoing, social personality combined with his inability to form meaningful relationships with his peers: everyone knows him, he knows everyone and yet, he has no friends. I was very touched to see an author attempt at dropping such a character into a work of fiction as, typically, authors wanting to represent hardships into personal relationships will choose to broach it from the awkward introverted character (such as Renarin). The truth is, yes, extroverted talkative individuals can have problems with relationships too: some of us are too intrusive, too blunt, take too much space without intending too and others do not like it. As a result, yes, some of us will just close up onto ourselves, but closing up for an extroverted isn't the same as for an introverted: you are still very talkative and social, but not about the things which are important because important things are weapons to be used against you. Worst, if you were to make a move to actually develop a meaningful relationship with someone you actually enjoy spending time with, then this person might as well reject you and then where would you be? Left with no one to talk to, to spend time with: better to ignore it, to not try and to stay within the blissful ignorance as to whether or not others actually like you. I also relate to his blunt honesty, his straight-forwardness into calling a stone, a stone without attempting to sugar-coating it. I also relate to him not being a blind follower, to question before believing and to him being downright pragmatic. No, Dalinar, even if you think they are true, it does not make sense to base your decision making on visions. So yeah, I loved how Brandon tried to write this character and I found it extraordinarily refreshing.
