  2. I met my girlfriend because of Brandon sanderson. Met her at a dance because I was looking for somebody who liked Brandon sanderson and within minutes we were nerding and now we are saying and it's a great relationship oh and when Brandon met us I got a fistbump because of a bondsmith shirt she gave me (which in and of itself was amazing, me getting of school and my parents taking us 6 hours away to Boston for the day).

  5. LG33: Term 1, Month 1 - What is the Meaning of Life? Chancellor Varda stood above the empty skin of what had once been Master Namer Droughtbringer, now a gruesome husk. This hadn’t been something to do with his Naming. He had been ridiculous, but not quite this idiotic. This was something far worse. “It’s coming again,” she murmured to herself. That night, the Chancellor addressed the assembled students. “What is the meaning of life?” she began. “It’s an age-old question, and one without any simple answer. But it’s the question I wish to pose, over the next few months. We are the University, the greatest center of learning in the modern world! Can we not solve this question, at long last? There is an answer. Perhaps many. Each of you, during the upcoming terms, will consider it, until you have found an answer to your satisfaction. Consider the great philosophers, the opinions of your grandmothers, the voice of a beggar across the street. Find your answer. What is the meaning of life?” “I ask this, because it has become relevant lately. You will need that answer, many of you. Death is coming. “Master Drought died last night, to a Skindancer attack.” She raised a hand to forestall murmurings. “No, they’re not fairy tales or children’s stories. Yes, they’re real, and yes, they’re here. Until they are exterminated, the coming months will be hard. “You cannot trust your friends, because anyone could be a Skindancer. But we are the University, are we not? The center of learning in the modern world? Arm yourselves, my students. Advance in the ranks. Find the Skindancers among you and wipe them out, until we remain, purer for the battle we have won!” She paused, then continued quietly, “And consider, as you do, the meaning of life, in the case that you are one felled by the fighting.” Magestar stood before the Horns, a large crescent-shaped table with the nine - currently eight - Masters sitting at it, all looking down upon him. He shivered a little, but did not let that deter him from his protest. “It was only a joke! I said ‘hey, in that case I’m probably a Skindancer, sure’, but only in reference to the fact that a friend called me ever-changing! It was a natural response. You can’t discipline me for it!” Chancellor Varda frowned down at him. “A joke in poor taste, then. Very well, student. You may go. Be more careful in the future.” Magestar was brought on the Horns, but all charges were dropped! Droughtbringer has been found dead, killed by the Skindancers! Long Game 33 has begun! You have 36 hours to send in any and all actions (sabotages, elevation points, going to Imre) and decide who should be brought on the Horns. Important Note: Please label all PMs “Term 1, Cycle 1” or “1.1” for this cycle, and continue doing so throughout the game for each respective cycle. That will make the GMs’ lives much easier for counting. Also, more clarifications were put into the writeup. Check there before you ask your friendly GMs, please. Player List 1. 6. The Adolin will revive his Shardblade discussion used to be fairly popular, but it has run out of fashion lately. It lost most of its traction, but it doesn't mean we won't get to read it. It just means either frequent and new posters alike do not have much to add on the subject or they just don't support it anymore based on the planning of SA3 which was a massive bummer for the Adolin fans. It is good you are raising Adolin's injuries as this has been bothering me as well. He gets seriously injured on a few occasions: the Tower fight left him completely drained out (practically unconscious if we are to trust Kaladin's words for it), the first encounter with Szeth bruised him badly over the shoulder, the leg not to forget he hit his head pretty hard. He was half-conscious for a while and he complained of a headache on the following morning which are clear cut signs of a head concussion. However, later on, Adolin's injuries do not seem to matter anymore as if they... disappeared or at least, healed very fast. At the time, I had thought Brandon, just like most authors merely ignored the fact he injured the character, choosing to downplay how the injuries would have realistically impact him because huh injured characters are boring (which isn't true, I personally love tropes involving injured characters). While it could be Adolin is indeed secretly surgebinding, I honestly doubt he is. Adolin is an unlikely Radiant to begin with, reviving a Blade is nearly impossible, it seems far-fetched to think he might have done it well enough to gain access to surgebinding. It is way too early. What is happening then? Well, recently however something I never thought of popped into my mind. I started wondering more about the Truthwatchers and I noticed each known one had one thing in common: they secretly worked towards providing small goods to people around them, they were unconsciously healing others.... which made me wonder about Renarin. How did it fit into all this? What small good is he secretly doing, unknown to all? My new theory is Renarin has been secretly healing his brother. In shorts, he's been feeding stormlight to Adolin since WoK, helping him recover faster from his injuries. Since his bond isn't advanced, it is slow going and it goes by completely unnoticed, but it does explain how Adolin is able to keep up despite being bruised all over and hit on the head on a frequent manner. I also noticed how, each time they are together, Renarin initiates physical contact with Adolin... I never thought much of it until I realized it was a very peculiar behavior for an autistic individual. Aren't autistic individuals having trouble with touching people and physical contact in general? So how do we explain Renarin's behavior? He's doing it on purpose. He may not understand how and why, but he added one and one together: he touches his brother because it allows him to use regrowth on him. So while I do think there is something about Adolin never being impacted by his injuries for a lasting period of time (except at the end of WoR where he is much more battered and Renarin is likely not around to provide him the healing he needs), but I do not think it is Adolin doing it.

  7. On a warmer note: D&D went very well tonight. I had all 7 of my current players present. They were going into a big battle to save a massive sentient tree called the Grandfather Tree. They had managed to get a powerful ally to come help and the tree that would also be helping them a little. All that adds together to make for a very challenging encounter to balance and can easily drag horribly with that many participants. But it ended up being one of the best battles we've had in the campaign There were particularly cool moments for multiple of the characters which really helped. I also had some new miniatures that I knew would arrive soon, including a treant figure. I was really hoping they would arrive in time for tonight because one of the things that was likely to happen was an opportunity for the party druid to be temporarily turned into a treant by the Grandfather Tree and having the mini would make the moment so much cooler. The mini arrived just in time. So when I was describing it I was able to describe the transformation and plonk this huge mini on the table as they turned into it. The player loved it. (Not the best image but it'll do.) Anyway, seeing players get invested in a session and hearing how much they enjoyed it is really rewarding as a GM.

  9. I was thinking it was pretty similar too. >> Good game Forgotten. You caught some lucky breaks, like me randomly giving Frozen Mint the Assassin ability and Joe blocking Seonid's attack, but you also made the right calls at the end to take out mine and Brightness' protection. So kudos for that. And also, good work by Frozen Mint, since she was basically never under suspicion the entire game until the very end when it didn't make a difference. Village, just lynch Joe next time, 'kay? I also thought my sis, Brightness Radiant, played pretty well for her first game. We almost had 'em! It was fun being confirmed village roles together, though it took away some of the mystery of whether one of us might be fooling the other, since we roleclaimed to each other pretty early(she was worried Len was gonna kill her because she told him she was an Acid-Specialist, so she told me). Thanks for the game Sart! It was a lot of fun. Although I did say I thought it was balanced in the Forgotten's favor in the dead doc, I don't think it was unfairly so. We had our chances, and we've no one to blame but Amanourselves.

  11. So many people who have read Redwall! It's a small world. “Oh, ‘twas on the umpty-ninth of spring, When a duck blew on a trumpet, I led me army from behind, To the battle of the final crumpet. Some wore boots an’ some wore clogs, An’ some wore big long faces, An’ two fat moles fell down with colds, Before we’d marched ten paces. At the battle of the final crumpet, I very near lost me life, When I go punched upon the nose, By a big bad hedgehog’s wife. Then all broke out in mutiny, When a mouse with a mustache said, ‘Lie down me lads afore they charge, So they’ll think we’re all dead!’ Well there we sat while all around, The spears an’ shafts were thuddin’, A-drinkin’ goosegog cordial wine, An’ eatin’ cabbage pudden’. We finally defeated them, When the duck tripped on his trumpet, An’ I got a feather in me cap, Cos I ate the final crumpet!”

  12. Alright, I'll sign up. Glavion will be attending the university. Something I want to say now is that I will be refusing to play along with any schemes that use linguistics to directly scan for skindancers (for example, forcing everyone to include the phrase "I am not a skindancer" in a post, and then not lie in posts). There is an entire faculty for finding skindancers. Use that, not linguistics. Plus strats that encourage village trust groups to try force people to play a certain way is something I'd rather avoid. It was something that bothered me about the last game but as a skindancer I wasn't really in a position to effectively complain about it. Edit: I'll try workout a background and maybe a cosmetic role tomorrow. Edit 2: @Elbereth Is the d10 1-10 or 0-9 like the actual numbers on a d10? Edit 3: Tag request - "Fun with tags! "

  15. Fun story: The first time I read WOK I checked it out from my university's library, and it was the full-size hardcover. I work in the library and never go anywhere without something to read, so for a few weeks I was toting that giant brick of a book around in my backpack, in and out of the library every day. And every single time I walked through the security gates with the book in my bag, they would start wailing the alarm that I was trying to take library property out of the building without checking it out. (This happened both when I was leaving and when I was entering.) It got to the point where the security guards who were on shift at the times of day when I was coming and going started to recognize me, and I quit carrying the book in my bag so that I could have it ready in my hands for the guards to scan and verify that it'd already been checked out and I wasn't trying to steal it. And you know why that happened? The security gates were reacting to a little magnetic piece of security tape in the book's spine that wasn't working properly because WOK is so storming fat.

  17. Ok this is my climatic post in a series of things which have discussed various manifestations of the color red in the Cosmere. We also know that the red eyes are a specific thing going on in the cosmere, but is NOT associated with any one shard. So far we have seen: 1. The parshendi when they gain storm form, their eyes turn red. Now this may be because the stormspren is red, but it also might be this mysterious thing with the color red. Also, the spren who have been corrupted in Dalinars vision have red eyes, if I remember correctly. 2. The faceless immortals we see at the end of bands of mourning. This is interesting, because normal kandra do not have red eyes. We know virtually nothing about them, but it is certain that there is something going on here. 3. The Shades on threnody. These are also interesting, because normally their eyes are green. When they turn red, they become murderous. I think it may be possible that there is an actual change going on when the eyes turn red, a trigger for this mysterious eye thing perhaps, caused by the breaking of the simple rules. 4. The mysterious red haze coming towards scadrial. I think this may just be red to be ominous, but at the same time it might mean something that could give us a clue about the color red. It's a shard, or so we guess (I can't remember if it has been confirmed). 5. Taln's Scar, or just the Scar. A belt of red stars which I find very suspicious. I currently am of the opinion that it has to do with adonalsium shattering there, and for some reason the released investiture caused a change. Such a shattering could not have done nothing to the area it occured in. Someone also noted that threnodys star is also kind of red, and we know ambition was wounded there. As for why other stars might not be red, I figure that because honors investiture was vented through the spren, and the dominion and devotion investiture got stuffed in the cognitive realm, that perhaps their investiture didn't get the chance to change the star colors. It isn't perfect, but I think it's a workable explanation. I think at this point that the red might be investiture that has INDEPENDENTLY developed intelligence, rather than being a cognitive shadow. This is at least in the case of the eyes, although I would be happy if anyone else has other ideas. I think the red stars are from investiture from shards somehow changing the stars. I am very much against the idea that the fainlife changed the stars, simply because I still find the idea of a mold corrupting a star a little ridiculous. Overall, I think that the Red is not an accident. Perhaps there is a reason that odium is associated with red, despite it not being dependent on a single shard in all it's manifestations. I would love to hear any more thoughts anybody has about the color red and what it might be representative of. Oh and here is the WoB: Are all the red-eyed characters influenced by the same shard? No, but the red is significant. (it has meaning in the cosmere)

  23. Arcanum Unbounded implies that what Odium does forces the soul of the Vessel to pass Beyond. The essay on Sel talks about how Devotion and Dominion had 'their minds ripped away, their souls sent into the Beyond' so they didn't have a choice and Ambition might be in a similar situation. Ati as noted might not have wanted to hang around after millenia acting as the sock-puppet for the forces of entropy.

  25. I hadn't considered the Elantrian (Hoed) mantres but you are likely on the right track. I was equating the screams of the blades to the screams Szeth was hearing which likely have the same root; Spiritual aspect damage.

  26. Maybe I can explain this a little? I recently helped someone explain how rapid and extreme changes in temperature can cause severe damage to an objects structural integrity, we see something similar here. If you notice, the blade began to frost over as it neared Anna's arm; given the cold environment around it didn't cause frost, likely due to its being sheathed, this implies extreme amounts of sudden cold. Such a shift in the temperature of the blade wasn't evenly spread either. It spread from one end to the other, one side experiencing much more drastic cold than the other. I doubt that the cold would've had much time to spread into the blade either. Because cold causes objects to shrink, usually unnoticeable when it comes to metal and other solids, we have a situation where several parts of the blade, mostly if not exclusively the outermost parts, shrinking at different rates. This alone would cuase cracks in the blade and allow it to shatter on things that it, ordinarily, would've cut through with ease. Now for why anna didn't shatter. We know that love affects magic in strange ways within the Disney universe. It can restore life as seen in Snow White (though that has a scientific explanation), it can bring one back from the brink of death as seen in tangled, it can physically transform you from one thing into another as seen in the little mermaid and the princess and the frog, in Maleficent and Beauty and the Beast we see that it can remove or destroy curses, and in Atlantis and Hercules it can even remove godhood (or cause one to reject godhood. Still confused on which they were implying there, though I know what they wanted us to believe.). With this in mind, add in the fact that Anna is the first example of a human freezing due to a magically frozen heart we've ever seen. In this case, I would assume that such a being would have ice that is much more difficult to break than normal ice. Add in the act of true love she had just committed, the fact that it's a Disney film, the damage the blade would have take from the sudden cold, and the strange effects that true love has on magic, and its starting to look like there's a case that explains why she was undamaged. What do you think?

  29. I'm going to have to strongly disagree with you here. First off, I feel the need to establish something: Within the bounds of the movie, it is never stated that a frozen heart equals death. It is stated that only an act of true love can thaw a frozen heart. That's it. That's all that is established about it; and as we're in a world not only filled with comical trolls and ice powers that can build castles, but that is run by Disney, the assumption that an act of true love can save someone with a frozen heart—no matter how far this freezing had progressed—is not unfounded in the least. Now. Throughout the movie, a key theme is that of an "act of true love" being able to thaw a frozen heart. It's assumed, by Anna, Kristoff, most of the trolls, and the audience that this means Anna must be the recipient of true love to recover. But Frozen takes this in a different direction. When Anna seeks out Hans for true love's kiss, he blatantly refuses her, revealing himself as the villain, and a particularly dangerous one at that. But more importantly, he sets the film up for a subversion and rebuttal of the usual fairy tale logic and roles: Rather than needing to receive true love, Anna gives true love in trying to protect her sister, and in so doing she saves not only Elsa, but herself. This is also a lovely bit of symbolism, or at least I saw it that way. In so many stories, we're given the "ice queen," the girl who's had rotten luck with men and so has hardened her heart against the world; she usually exists so the male protagonist can thaw (and eventually melt) her frozen heart. Until he does, she is helpless. She cannot love others or herself. This, unfortunately, sends the message that unless you can find someone else who loves you, you will never be able to recover from past wounds. Yet with Anna, we see someone who thaws her own heart by showing selfless love. She's more than the empowered female protagonist who saves herself and the day; she is a young woman who has been pushed away by her sister for most of her life. She lost her parents, and her sister was cold and distant. Now Elsa has hurt her deeply. Anna has every reason to see the worst in her sister, to withdraw and lick her wounds and blame Elsa for her frozen heart and rapidly declining health. Anna knows all of this—and chooses to love her sister anyway. This choice, this act of selfless love, is what saves her and allows her to love again. That is such a powerful and profound depiction of forgiveness and sisterly love that its inclusion makes it impossible for me to see Frozen as anything less than excellent.

  30. Perhaps, it was a foregone conclusion. Surrounded by chalklings, alone in the cold of night, there was nothing the camp could do. They tried killing Cole, even after his repeated protests. The kid was crying, desperately looking to survive. The town moved to strike him down, but Gunther tried to stop the mob. That was the only opening the Forgotten needed. Cole's eyes turned bright white as he stabbed Gunther straight in the chest. The rest of the Forgotten smiled, as the chalklings poured into their makeshift defense. Gunther could only watch helplessly as the swarm slid over his hairy body. He was the first to die. Shem couldn't hold out very long. He had tried so hard to kill the Forgotten. How had Joel blocked his shot? He guessed he would never get the answer. Shanice pulled out a revolver. She was so glad that Lance had taught her how to use it. Too bad she had killed him with it. She fired at Lance three times. Damaging his Circle irreparably. The chalklings quickly rushed through the openings. Locke was the next to fall. He had worked so hard to protect the camp. When no one else watched, he was there to pick up the slack. It didn't matter now. Joel shot Line after Line of Vigor at him. He tried launching an assault, but the man protected himself with stunning precision. He was so focused on his attack, he didn't see the chalklings breach his defenses. He was swallowed in minutes. The chalklings paused, as Isaac took out a flask. "Come comrades. Let's not fight..." he took a long swig. "We don't have to be enemies any more. Let's be friends." The chalklings began crawling over Kyle's body, not eating him, but converting him. His eyes began glowing white, turning into those of a Forgotten. "No!" screamed Neil. He had frozen with chalklings, but he sprang into action, drawing Lines of Warding and Forbiddance like a man possessed. He ran to Kyle's side, desperately trying to stop the corruption. Neil looked at him, eyes glowing white. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a kitchen knife. He stabbed Neil, once, twice, three times. "Not you too. Not you too. I was supposed to protect everyone. This wasn't supposed to happen. This shouldn't have happened." Kyle continued stabbing him, not hearing anything. "No!" Neil yanked the knife from Kyle. He stabbed the man straight in the eye, and then raked the knife against Kyle's face, producing a deep gash. He crumpled to the floor, as the horde ate their next meal. Cole stared at Kyle. "Do you think he's still usable?" He asked monotonously. Isaac examined him. Kyle was still breathing. "Potentially. I don't want to see his artistry go away. We'll have to see if he makes it." He picked up the man's body. "Come comrades, let's drink! This was a job well done." The Forgotten smiled as they toasted their flasks, four sets of glowing white eyes amidst the darkness of the night. Vote Count: Aman (4): Seonid, Jondesu, Randuir, Orlok Jondesu (5): Aman, Joe, Frozen Mint, Elenion, Hemalurgic Headshot Seonid was killed. He was a Village Assassin. Jondesu was lynched. He was a Village turned Forgotten Artist. (He unfortunately died right after being converted) The Forgotten have won! Analysis and doc links coming soon. Player List:

  32. Shaking the last drops of syrup off his boot, Jude sat down in the shade of a crumbling brick wall and shook his head. First he had spent the better part of a day making his way towards the floating structure, then when he got there he saw, for the briefest of moments, what looked like a person falling towards the ground. Maybe two. He couldn't quite tell. Then the person/people were gone, in a flash of light, color, and blueberry waffles. That last part was particularly jarring. He closed his eyes and tried to rest for a moment, until a particularly loud squeal erupted near him. Jude narrowed his eyes. It sounded almost like a person, though not a squeal of desperation or of needing help. It was more a squeal of joy. "What?" He asked aloud, turning a corner. "What?" There he saw, in all their shiny glory, two young women sharing a particularly... enthusiastic kiss. Cocking an eyebrow, Jude stood. For a good minute and a half, he stood there, until they broke the embrace and one of them turned to look at him, the one in the apron with the wild hair. Well, he wasn't exactly one to judge on the state of one's hair, as his hadn't seen a brush in... months? He didn't know. He mustered up a smile. God, he hadn't smiled in so long. He had almost forgotten how. "Uh... Hi there."

I told Jon this in the PM I made with him, but the elims were honestly concerned with how the village would act this last night, For a while we believed that Joe had been figured out and the villagers were feeding him wrong information, but thankfully they believed he was good :] I really wish we could have converted HH in the end, since he was the only villager who took the "right" side, but I'm perfectly happy with Jon joining us for ironies sake. There's a lot more I could say about this game, but I think I mentioned everything fun / important in the elim doc, anyway. For the record, I decided to keep up the lies until the very end mostly for practice's sake. I will not be surprised if I end up evil in the Championship qualifier. Speaking of, for anyone who wants to spectate, message me on Discord! There's going to be a discord chat for people who are watching the game, and like me playing, it would be a great opportunity for everyone to meet new people.

Your furniture becomes their servants and you are forced to move. The Nightwatcher thinks that's appropriate, seeing as how you confused her with your incomprehensible vernacular. As your bane, you receive limits on your knowledge: you can only learn 8,000 things about any one subject. I wish to never have to use a school-issued yoga mat ever again.

As a first set of possible questions (as OB's release is relative near I will avoid SA's questions): - Has a Twinborn (like Wax) problems to Push on his own Metalmind (for Identity's interference) ? - A Metalmind or Spikes could physically block a Shardblade. Does those hits impact on the Metalmind's charge ? (something like ruin a coppermind's memories) - We know the mechanics behind some magic systems' mechanics - Hemarurgy cuts/sews pieces of Spiritwebs, Awakening imprints an object with a new cognitive aspect. What are the mechanics that make Steelsight (and Wax's Bands-enhanced version) work? (for @Argent but I can't honestly find a direct and better wording) - Most of Heightenings' benefit seems to be toward a general concept of Perfection, are mostly of those benefits stricly Breath related or they are general consequence of having a lot of Innate Investiture ? - The Awakened Object's Breaths will slowly running out of power. Does this happen also when they are into a someone's soul (in his lifetime) ? - Could a Shard invests so much of his power to make the Vessel de-Ascend ? - If a Susenbron's Lifeless held an uncovered Nightblood, would Nightblood be able to feed of his breath ? (Because Breath's removal seems to be connect to a color draining, so if the owner can't be color drained maybe Nightblood can't take his Breath - Does a Soulforgery change the subject's Identity ?

  42. This is my favourite idea for Hoid, nuanced around him basically trying to get Connection to every Shard without being limited by it (without the investiture interfering and so on). We know that Hoid rejected one of the Shards so he doesn't seem to want to be powerful in the way Odium is, powerful but limited. So I suspect it's around being Connected to everything. I haven't finessed why that would be so useful. And this topic reminds me of one of my favourite recent WoBs. Hema-Hoid! Kelsier is a popular idea for it, I wonder if it could be Khriss (in light of her interest in hemalurgy). I hope it's not just a Bad Guy, but something more interesting. But this feels similar to me, basically trying to get Connected, perhaps more than just getting cool powers. But yeah I think it's all conjecture at this stage. But conjecture worth conjecturin'!

  45. I predict that Jasnah will have some shipping moments with Vasher when/if they interact and she discovers what an intelligent, if belligerantly gruff, scholar he is. If nothing else it will provide some very amusing and interesting interactions if it happens.

  46. In Oathbringer the 17th shard will catch up with Hoid. The 3 we have seen will attempt to apprehend him and we will get to see Hood in action for the first time. but after an epic (non lethal battle), Hoid will escape with ease. The 3 worldhoppers will go back to the leader of the 17th shard to inform him of their failure. This is not Frost as we may be lead to believe, he just happens to be in league with them. Instead he is a man baring a full head of blonde hair with dashing looks, a spike through one eye and scars down his arms. Kelsier has spent the past several hundred years forming the 17th shard for his own goals...goals that Hoid's actions are impeding.

  47. From the album: Shadesmar

Kids at school were coloring pictures from one of those "adult coloring books". I stumbled upon this picture and I totally borrowed it, made a copy, and colored it to look like the Shadesmar. The resemblance is uncanny.

  48. To be honest, I've always imagined Kaladin resisting the Thrill in a similar way to how Vimes resisted the Gonne in Men at Arms by Terry Pratchett. ie: Kaladin resists the Thrill through sheer cynicism.

  49. That's a good question. Please allow us seven more hundred-page threads to talk it over, and then we'll get back to you.
