  2. I chanced upon this on tumblr that contained a segment of an interview Brandon did in Bulgaria last month and during one of the questions, the interviewer asked " If you are entrusted with a shard of Adonalsium, which shard?" and Brandon replied "maybe Ingenuity" which is not one of the 10 shards currently known to us. I'm not sure if he was just saying a quality that would suit himself or he accidentally/intentionally released a new shard name. The link to the video and tumblr is: http://imaginarycosmere.tumblr.com/ & https://www.facebook.com/Ozone.bg/videos/10155148570203320/ (the question is asked around 16:15) What do you guys think? new shard or not? and cheers

  3. Like @Robinski, I've generally been at a loss as to what to say. But I do regret not saying anything, and so here I go, in the interests of trying to help. I do think that the issue here, while it does play out in politics, is not a political issue at its core. It's an issue of respect. I think we should be clear: respecting people and treating people with kindness is not a political action. It is simply a human one. As we all have seen, these kinds of heated discussions pop up in the critique threads as much as they do in the Lounge. That's because these issues, ranging from the use of pronouns to racism to how to respond to evil, do relate to our writing. They should relate to our writing. We write to reflect on and make sense of the world, and to entertain people in the meantime. I know these discussions won't go away (at least I hope they won't go away) if we just all agree to keep our discussion on this forum "non-political" or "focused on writing." I want my writing to reflect true human existence, and I want it to do so in a way that respects everyone. And I don't want anyone to hesitate to call me out, when I go wrong, in the interest of being non-political. Letting other people read our writing, especially our developing writing, is an act of trust. And it's really sad to see people who trust each other one moment, hurt each other the next. I tend to believe the best of everyone (sometimes naively), and I do believe, even though I'm probably wrong, that these discussions go south by accident (at least at first). One person says something in ignorance of its implications. Another person is hurt. I really don't think anyone on this forum is here because they like hurting people. But it does make me sad, when someone knows they've hurt someone else, that I don't always see an apology or an effort to restore trust and respect. I do want to say that if anyone ever gets into a discussion and is worried that they're going to respond in a way that makes things worse, feel free to PM me with questions, or a draft of your response, or just to vent. I certainly don't have all the answers, and I won't try to speak for anyone I'm not, but I'm generally more emotionally removed from these discussions, and I'd like to take the burden off of the people who are most emotionally affected and drained. (There are issues that I'm too emotional about to discuss reasonably -- but they've never come up here...) This forum is an amazing resource for us. I love the feedback I get here on my writing. I love being able to talk with and work with other writers in our various stages of career. I love the diversity of styles and of ideas that I get to see and learn about. Basically, I just want to say: I love you all. Even when we fight. P.S. Thank you @Chaos for your omniscient presence and your work here.

  4. Eureka! I had an epiphany today in regards to the story I'm writing. Like most things I write, I originally had the idea from a dream, but I have had this huge plot hole hanging in my face for a long time. Today (oddly while in the bathroom) I figured out how to beautifully tie all of the pieces together! It was one of those "why didn't I see it before" moments. Anyway, I'm very, very happy.

  7. There were few things worse than a gossip, Ryth decided. That woman, Stick, certainly fell under that category. Although she was extremely quiet during the attack, she wouldn't shut up afterwards. Unfortunately, she wouldn't talk about what mattered. They were trying to find the Forgotten, not chat about handsome Knight-Senators. It had certainly gotten the town riled up. She had to be hiding something, they reasoned. He didn't want to think about what happened next. Being ganged up like that. He shuddered. At least it had been a quick death. It wasn't like they could stand around and do nothing. Strike first, that was his motto. At least, that's what Professor Nalizar taught him. Come to think of it, hadn't Stick been in that class. It didn't matter now. You always had to be thinking of the next step. The next step, for him at least, was investigating the Circle. Who had enough firepower to blow it to smithereens? The whole set up was screwy. He started tracing the Line, making sure no gaps were present. That's when he found it. It was a hole about a foot across. If the chalklings wanted to, they could surge through it, but they were still. They were silent, as if waiting for something. Engrossed by the chalklings, Ryth didn't notice the person standing behind him. He certainly didn't see them grab a brick, and clock him over the head. He wasn't aware of his body being thrown into the Circle. He couldn't watch as the killer sealed the Line behind him. He couldn't even scream before the chalklings ate their next meal. His corpse was shredded in a matter of minutes. His killer smiled, and then vanished into the darkness. Vote Count: Stick (6): Elenion, Joe, Frozen Mint, Paranoid King, Ornstein, Randuir Hemalurgic Headshot (1): Stick Paranoid King (1): Jondesu Joe (2): Lopen, Brightness Radiant Stick was lynched. She was a Village Duelist. Ryth was killed, and eaten by the Chalklings. He was a Village Duelist. Player List: The cycle will end 48 hours from now on Sunday, 9 PM Eastern Time.

  11. So, I just did something I've been hemming and hawing about for the last two weeks - I asked a girl out, sorta - asked a girl if she wanted to meet up. We met years ago, and I had a crush on her then but nothing came of it. We chatted a bit around her birthday this year, and met at an event a couple of weeks ago. She gave me a hug!!! but we both had to go and didn't have time to catch up properly. So I just asked her if she wants to meet up. Why is my heart beating this fast storm it. I dunno, even if nothing comes of it - at least I was brave. It's good to be brave. Right? Right??

  12. LG32: Day Nine - An Exciting Party Dear _________ Do you expect me to go on about some ‘You did X…’ or something? Well you’d be wrong, because I’m not gonna do that. Instead, I’m gonna talk about what I did. I didn’t kill anyone recently, which I’ve been told is not good for my mental health. ‘Course, the person that told me killing was bad is now dead, after I realised how wise they truly were. But that was not that long ago, so everything is fine now. I actually ended up taking some art classes! Apparently I’m ‘gifted’, according to my teacher. The art speaks on a deep level about the tragedy of the death of The Lord Ruler, and how people overcame that disaster. Don’t know how they got that from a carrot, but clearly I’m not that artistically talented yet. Sadly I must now take my leave, my next art piece is going to new a few litres of blood, and I don’t particularly feel like donating. Until Next Time, The Court Artist Tineye Message: Hello everyone! Its-a-me, Lopen the Tineye! Sorry for not sending more messages, but I was afraid I'd get converted and then I'd be in a tough spot. But, I figured since the Inquisitor can't convert right now, this would be the best time to reveal myself. Hopefully I'm not dead. Also, sorry to those of you who I lied to. There was a way to figure out my lie though, which I actually pointed out to some. My vote was Rioted Day 1, meaning I couldn't have turned my Coppercloud off yet. So, if someone had figured out my lie, I had decided to reveal my true role to them. I claimed to Mark very early as Tineye, but he went inactive, so I decided to keep my options open. Anyways, that's all I have to say, unless I'm still alive of course. Player List 1. Arinian - Alrin 2. Hemalurgic Headshot - Quinn 3. Jondesu - Remart - Spiked Coppercloud 4. 16. I've been thinking about time travel a bit lately, probably a result of spending too much time watching Dr Who and 12 Monkeys. Anyway, I was thinking about my ideas on how time travel might work and found myself thinking the explanation in the form of a short story. So I wrote it. *shrug* I haven't really gone through and edited it so there are bound to be plenty of issues but it's approaching 3am and I felt like sharing it anyway. A stable loop (google doc)

  17. Does anyone know/have a theory as to when Harmonium was first on Scadrial? Would it have been only after Sazed took up Ruin and Preservation or some stage before that?

  18. So as much as I love Mistborn, there are some things that I don't 100% understand, so I figured I'd toss out the questions here and you folks are sure to be able to answer 1) So every shard has a pool. Ruin has a pool, and the pits where his atium grows. Kelsier destroys the pits, and Hoid says now no one can travel there. But he uses Preservation's pool to travel, so, couldn't he use Ruin's pool to travel? 2) Why does Atium grow but Lerasium does not? Was that part of Leras' sacrifice to beat Ruin? 3) Why does Lerasium have such a permanent effect but Atium is very limited? 4) Why does Ruin's freedom depend on Vin/anyone using the pool or holding it in? What's the difference? 5) Can any pool be used like the Well of Ascension/Preservation's pool? 6) People use Atium and it regrows. What happens to Lerasium when people use it? 7) What was Ati/Ruin going to do with the cache of Atium if he did find it? Absorb it someway? Why would this benefit him, why would he need it to be powerful? If he needs it, why let it grow in the first place? I am pretty sure I have more questions but that's what I remember....for now

  19. So Hoid has been dropping some nice pearls of wisdom at the end of each Stormlight Archive book to date, with the WoB that he'll have another monologue in Oathbringer. I've decided to make a small post of the essence of each one, dubbing the list "Hoid's Ten Commandments," with the hope that by the end of SA we'll have ten. Currently have it in English and High Imperial. It would be really cool if someone could make Women Script versions as well. Hoid's Ten Commandments (English) Thou shall value timeliness above all else. (The Way of Kings) Thou shall find God within thy hearts. (Words of Radiance) (Oathbringer) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) Wasing Commanding the Ten of Hoid (Scandrian High Imperial) Ising needing of time the first. (The Way of Kings) Ising with heart the finding of God. (Words of Radiance) (Oathbringer) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown) (Unknown)

  20. Part three of a collab between Blackhoof and I. The woman, apparently the representative of some Epic named Accord, gloated in a disgusting and unseemly manner. Winterspell felt his rage grow as she laughed at him. A mere human, laughing at him! But his rage cooled as he considered the strange Epic behind him. His powers.... they were unlike any Winterspell had ever seen. What could this Eternity even do? Any move Winterspell could make, Eternity could escape, or freeze time. It was too risky, when he didn't even know what Eternity was capable of. He needed to play along, give them what they wanted... and find out how to get revenge later, if possible. If they wouldn't serve him, they were his enemies. "First. Why are you so eager to detain those who have business with your liege?" He glanced to the side, and noticed for the first time that no-one had emerged from the Keep, as they should have done immediately. And the word, it was strangely silent. What was... oh. He noticed the water beneath him, and it was completely motionless. A bird hung in the sky, an immobile speck. The world was frozen in time. Winterspell smiled, fighting down his sudden panic. He needed to get back inside time immediately, lest he be trapped here. "I'd be more than happy to answer your questions, I'll cooperate fully. Please, just un-freeze time and step away and we can discuss this in a civilised manner." Truce shook her head disdainfully. "You are no fun." She sighed. "Eternity, please show Winterspell the full extent of our hospitality. Release him." Eternity inclined his head, in acquiescence, and mentally banished Truce back into the regular flow of time. He kept his knife where it was, leaning a little closer to the ice Epic. "If you wish to survive this with your mind intact, you will listen, and listen well. "In a few moments, I am going to stab you through the heart. It will hurt. Quite possibly more than anything you have ever experienced. After you are done screaming, you will tell Truce everything she wishes to know. "Once she is satisfied, we will help you with your coup." Winterspell stiffened, clearly surprised. "High Epics are rather predictable. If you weren't planning one before--which I doubt--you are now. "Truce will have conditions. I, however, want only one thing in exchange." Without clarifying, Eternity released Winterspell, kicking him in the back and sending him stumbling forwards. He froze in place; an impossible statue just about to fall. Eternity stepped around him, carefully placing the point of his knife just beneath Winterspell's sternum, angled upwards. Time restarted. Winterspell's momentum drove the knife up through his lungs and heart. Blood spurted over Eternity's fingers, turning into water even as it flowed. Time stopped. Winterspell slid to the ground, gasping with pain. The ice knife was buried to the hilt in his chest; the edges of the wound had turned to ice themselves, as if it were some spreading infection. Truce, animate again and none the wiser, grinned widely. "Oops. I forgot that Eternity is not much one for hospitality. Let us try again, shall we?" Winterspell gasped as the knife penetrated his chest. While the injury couldn't kill him, it sure hurt. "Oops. I forgot that Eternity is not much one for hospitality. Let us try again, shall we?" His flesh reformed as he groaned through gritted teeth, expecting the knife to pop out as his body reformed. But it didn't. He glanced down in confusion, pain throbbing through him, and saw that while his wound was icy, it wasn't reforming as it normally would. Either something was wrong with his powers, or his bodily functions didn't work as normal in this out-of-time place. He shivered, and not just from the pain. "Very well, I will answer your questions. My... attempts to detain you were simply a response to how powerful my Epic told me Eternity was. I am planning a coup, and I thought that such a powerful Epic would be a vital part of my efforts, capable of disabling or trapping the very powerful High Epics that rule over me. What are your other questions?" Shunting Winterspell back into the regular flow of time, Eternity turned to Truce. “Thoughts?” “Nothing I didn’t already suspect. Two more questions to get a general sense of his capabilities, perhaps negotiate a deal, and we’ll be on our way.” “Fine.” She waited a moment for Winterspell to animate again, and spoke. “Given that you are already planning a coup, the next two questions are simple. What exactly are you up against? Accord has some information on the Epics that rule here, but it would be good to know which support Lucentia, and which will turn, as well as their exact power. Likewise, what are your capabilities, and how do you plan to overcome the likes of Lucentia and the Metal?” Winterspell scowled. "I have a plan that is coming together. The Metal can be distracted and blinded, and Lucentia is currently out of town. By the time she gets back, this town and all its Epics will have sworn loyalty to me." He gave a brief rundown of the main Epics that governed Astoria and enforced its laws in Lucentia's absence. Over the years, he had gathered detailed information about their powers, capabilities, and personalities. He provided enough information to satisfy them, but withheld the best tidbits- and any speculations he had about their weaknesses- to give himself an edge. "Well," He finished, "does that satisfy your curiosity? Can we help each other? I believe your powers of time manipulation can be very useful for dealing with foes such as the Metal, so he cannot interfere when I capture or kill the other Epics. Shall we form an alliance?" My powers are something of a parlor trick compared to the Metal's, but I suppose a distraction could be possible. Temporarily. Despite his observations, Eternity remained silent. Winterspell didn't need to know what he couldn't do. "Perhaps." Truce sounded pensive, as if she hadn't realized the magnitude of what was arrayed against them before. "We may even be able to help with more elements of the plan than just combat. Now is not the time to hash out the details of an alliance, but if you give us a time, we will return, to draft a formal arrangement. We will agree on exact terms then." Truce looked to Eternity, pins she had brandished as weapons disappearing somehow into the sleeves of her dress. "For us, it is time we were going. We still have others to meet, if we wish to get a complete picture of the events here. I would appreciate it, Winterspell, if when we return to normal time, you are quick to call off your guards and allow us passage. While they will not achieve much, the noise is bothersome." Winterspell smiled. He had secured the fractious, but useful, alliance of at least one powerful Epic in his plans. But more happily, he would be pleased to be returned to normal time, and leave this unsettling and terrifying realm of silence and stillness. "Of course," he replied. "They will be ordered to stand down instantly. I have nothing to gain from irritating valuable new allies, after all." He bowed, "I hope we can come to an accommodation." "Thank you. That is our hope, as well. Eternity?" A thought, and Truce froze, reentering normal time. Eternity took a step closer to Winterspell, looking the man in the eye. "Remember what I said." He stepped back, and the river below began to flow again. Muffled shouts could be heard from the fortress in the distance. Winterspell's wound closed, ice cracking. "Well then, we'd best be off. We'll be back sometime around sunset, if that is agreeable. Our entrance of course will be subtler the next time around." With that, she began walking to the fortress's gate, allowing Eternity to fall in behind. Winterspell winced as his wound healed, pain ebbing away as his body resumed its normal, immortal functions. It felt good to be back in real time. His soldiers were still aiming at the guests, but they waited for his command, completely unaware of what had just occurred. "Men," he called, "Stand down. These Epics are our guests and our allies. And open the gates!" With that, he flew into the air on a tentacle of water and returned to his fortress, while the gates creaked open to allow passage to Eternity and Truce. Lightwrought looked at him strangely as he landed in through the window. "You weren't gone for very long. And you are letting them through, despite their rudeness? Without extracting a toll? What happened?" Winterspell grimaced. "Lets just say that they are powerful Epics indeed, but I did extract a toll. They will help me in my plan of domination. At least while I figure out a way to destroy them...."

  21. Damnation. I just thought of this exact theory, and someone have already done it. I made a map and everything. Eh. Let me quote Wit then. Bonus: I mapped the entire thing. The distances are of course irrelevant, as they get condensed in the cognitive. I just drawn over the star map. The star map is an artistic vision, so the directions are not perfect either anyway. Cardinal Directions Because they exist in minds of sentient life forms, I believe they exist in the Cognitive realm. Also, Nazh tells Kelsier to go west to find IRE. Another thing is the order of planets in the planetary system. I don't think they would move around much, so I organized them the way the planet closest to the sun would be closer to north in cognitive. I am not too attached to this idea though. Btw, I think the Southern Scadrial is also south on this map. Pathways I've drawn potential pathways. Note that there is no direct pathway from Roshar to First of the Sun - I think it goes through Braize, just like a path from Sel to First of the Sun goes through Nalthis. Dor pipeline So IRE has a pipeline through the cognitive realm that transports Dor. And their fortress was to the west from Scadrial. I just drawn the straight line from it to Sel. I know the fortress isn't exactly to the west, with Sel being north-west from Scadrial, but neither my nor the original star map are super accurate, so we should probably not fixate on this too much. Silverlight Now this is just a wild speculation. > The star map is a visualization as imagined from Silverlight, not an effect of space exploration > Silverlight is solely in the cognitive realm > Cognitive realm is entirely flat > Therefore there is no way Silverlight is in a plane that allows this view. I think the star map was made by someone who simply traveled the Sardworlds and mapped them in the Cognitive realm. Silverlight is supposed to be a meeting point. Therefore I think it should be somewhere between the major Shardworlds. I've drawn a few ideas: a: Between Sel, Taldain and Roshar - that would be between the three most cosmere-aware/realmatically-aware planets. b: All roads lead to Rome Scadrial, so I thought Silverlight would have a convenient path to Scadrial as well. And Taldain, except of Yolen, is the first Shardworld with cosmere-aware people. c: My favourite. Not only would that put Silverlight in the most densely populated area, but also on the way of IRE's Dor pipeline, which, I believe, would be quite convenient for Sel-descendant people. d: Silverlight would be in proximity of Yolen. Many people believe The Scar is the location of Yolen. If it is, Silverlight would be between The Scar and the rest of the Shardworlds. But we don't know where Yolen is, so speculation is pointless. So yeah, I hope that at least adds something new

  23. IF you want to include the stormfather who is the caretaker of much of a dead shard, then you would haveto include TLR while holding the well of ascension, he wasent quite a shard either, wich mean Roshar could collide with another of the planets in the system and be destroyed.

  27. @Julio - the women being 'jerks' is actually a sneaky, clever little integral part of the worldbuilding. You see, they're not jerks, they're sexist. WOT has a lot of mild/moderate sexism in it directed against men. A lot of people, including myself, didn't notice it, so I think RJ intentionally made Far Madding so terribly, clearly, obviously sexist. These books are one of the main reasons I'm a feminist today, because they showed me what mild sexism in our modern society looks like - the way women treat men in WOT is how men treat women in our society (Not always, and often in different ways, but it is very similar. The whole worldbuilding created a realistic premise where RJ could invert our cultures sexism, and he did a very subtle and imo a very good job of it). I'm nervously excited about it. It could be great, or it could be terrible. Mostly, it will be very very difficult. But if they pull it off? I will be thrilled.

  28. Nighthound noted that for now his sister and Neverthere seemed to have come to an agreement. Not a friendship of course but that wasn’t something he could hope for with his sister in the first place. As long as she ended up doing what he wanted, they could all deal with a little bit of younger sibling whining. There wasn’t any point in getting hang up on his sister’s mood, so he laid an arm around Neverthere when she turned back to him. “That is exactly what we’re going to do, my dear.” Nighthound wondered how much longer until she stopped to flinch from physical contact. It wouldn't ruin her for him but her effort was cute nonetheless. Their group headed headed to a suitable tailor. The one Lucentia got her dress from specifically. Given that Lightwards had already murdered the owner, they might as well use it before people got brave enough to loot it. Nighthound turned his attention to C4. "Now you get to stand up," he told her. His dog was still hesitant, so he crouched in front of her and took her hand. He was gentle but the touch made her flinch all the same. "Now, now, no reason to be afraid," Nighthound reassured her in a soothing voice. "We're here to reward you after all, so you're allowed to act like a slave instead of a dog just as long as we're here." Doubt was shaking all over C4's body as she slowly stood up. Afraid to raise any faster than Nighthound was pulling her hand up. Standing before him was a woman with a mind as tattered as her clothes and fear showing through like her bare skin through rip and holes in her dress. He'd miss the poetic side to it. However, if he wanted to keep her in any usable state, he would have to train her properly, instead of just fraying her mind apart. Even a minor Epic was too valuable a possession to just break within a matter of days. Especially one that was a feast for the eyes as well. If that meant dressing her up in something less revealing, so be it. A bit of fabric wouldn't stop him from enjoying his pet. Nighthound laid a hand on her cheek, ever so slightly caressing it. C4 didn't so much lean her head into the touch, as she let it drop into it like a puppet with cut strings. "Good. Anything you want to say to me now?" Nighthound asked. "Thank you, Master. Treating me like this is very... very generous of you," C4 manage to say while barely keeping her voice from breaking. "I can be a loving owner. Just do what you can to please me and you'll get a better life step by step. Who knows, maybe I'll let you act like a human outside this shop as well, if you're a good enough girl." "That would be too kind." "What do you think? Do you deserve any of that?" C4 was hesitant as she started to speak, scared of saying anything worthy of punishment. "Only if you think so, Master." Nighthound removed his hand from her cheek and tapped it back against her face. It was a firm and sharp motion but by no means held enough force to be considered a slap. That only made the effect more satisfying. She started visibly shaking and lowered her head like the beaten dog she was. To keep in line, a part of her defaulted to imitating dog noises in between her broken whimpering. He half expected her legs to give in but she barely managed to keep standing. Once Nighthound was satisfied with the sight of her misery, he lifted her head to force her to look at him. “I thought you better than that, didn’t it? Do we need to repeat your first lesson?” “No! Nonononono! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!” “Are you? Than what is the proper answer?” “I don’t deserve anything. I lost all of that when I tried to attack you. Everything you give me is more than I deserve and even after you decide to give it to me all of that is just your generosity, because I will never actually deserve it. Even that you haven’t… haven’t-” C4’s rambling became faster and faster until she started tripping over her own words. Though, she had already said enough, so Nighthound sealed her mouth with his. He remained like that for a moment until she had at least calmed a little bit. When he separated their lips, she had a look on her face reminding him if a deer staring into headlights. “That was exactly right. You did good to remember your lesson. Now let’s get your reward.” Finally, Nighthound turned to Neverthere, “Say, do you want to help me pick a dress for her or do you want to use the chance to introduce yourself to the other girls? As a fair warning, you probably want my sister to make sure that Ray doesn’t bite you.”

  31. Gunther looked up slowly from his Lines of Warding. Thanks to the camp's effort, the circle had been repaired. "Hey. Where's. K'Sarben?" Stick wheezed, panting. "How should I know?" asked Gimmel, clearly irritated. "More importantly, who the hell blew a hole in the Circle?" "It was the Forgotten, it had to have been the Forgotten." Shem stated levelly. "Really? You think the Forgotten are among us? Oh, that would be wonderful!" cried Regem. "The Forgotten killed someone!" Amelia screamed. The camp rushed to her side. K'sarben was lying in a pool of his own blood, dead. A kitchen knife was protruding out of him, yet there were no Lines surrounding him. "Oh happy day! The Forgotten are among us." Regem continued to be exhilarated, not noticing the angry mob surrounding him. "That's it. You're behind this! You tried to sabotage the camp for your gods." Ryth asserted, grimly. "Oh, I only wish I was one of them. Oh, it would be so... grand!" Regem exclaimed. In an instant, it was over. Ryth grabbed the knife from the body and stabbed Regem. "Um... shouldn't there be chalklings swarming out of him?" asked Shem. Ryth scowled. "That means there's probably more of them. Keep watch. We may have stopped the first assault, but there's bound to be more." Straw was lynched. He was a Village Blackmailer Darkness Ascendant was killed. He was a Non Rithmatist. 32. I just don't think you have to spend a lot of time on Shallan trying to steal the Soulcaster. That whole situation ends up resolving itself because Shallan is just so persistent. But you do raise a valid point about needing a female lead. You don't see much of that in the Kaladin and Dalinar parts of the book. I'm not saying Shallan should be eliminated from the movie, but her story takes a huge break in WoK. You don't even read about her much in the middle acts of the book. She should have a part in the movie, I'm just not a fan of making her screen time a 50/50 split with what's going on at the Shattered Plains. I think they should probably stay away from a lot of Kaladin's flashback scenes for the sake of time. I would like to see them do something at The Tower similar to how the book tells the story of Tien's death at that moment. I'm imagining a scene where Kaladin basically sees his life flash before his eyes. The audience would see short images of Kaladin holding Tien's body on the battlefield, Amaram ordering the execution of Kaladin's soldiers, and Kaladin being thrown into a slave wagon. When he snaps out of the vision, he infuses himself with Stormlight and charges the Parshendi army.

  33. Just because it is animated doesn't make it a childish cartoon. There are plenty of great animated series, which can be enjoyed by adults and kids alike (Star Wars Rebels). The problem with an animated series, however, is that it could be hard to market. Either you turn it into a show targeted at kids, but still with some darker content. I am not fond of this idea (it is one of the bad things with stuff like Clone Wars). The other thing you can do is target it at adults, but I think that a lot of adults doesn't want to watch animated, because they think it's for kids. Making an anime of it could be possible though, and that market is not that small. It could be a hit in Japan or China. Personally, I would prefer a Game of Thrones style TV-adaption, because I like seeing real actors running around. A cinematic movie would be hard to do though.

  34. This movie will never happen unless they have a lead female character: they greatly increased Arwen and Eowyn's roles within LoTR simply because they felt the movies needed stronger female characters. They created Tauriel for the Hobbit movies as the original material lacked a female character. You just don't make a fantasy movie, in the 21st century without including at least one major female character. In this spirit, cutting out Shallan's story arc is about the worst decision ever. I personally feel the opposite should be done: increase her and Jasnah's role into the story by borrowing the early story arcs of WoR. Condensed the event-less parts of their story and move it fast forward towards the most interesting ones. I would personally have Shallan's story end with the shipwreck in order to create a cliffhanger. We also need to be introduced to Taravangian which happens through Jasnah. This being said, in order to make more room into the movie, I would cut down Kaladin's bridge 4 scenes. Yes, this is his book, but once they make movies, it won't be "Kaladin's movie", it will be "Stormlight Archive's first movie". Hence it won't exclusively focus on the one character: it will go larger. A lot of Kaladin's story arc in WoK is about him wandering around, thinking to himself and chatting with Bridge 4: these would need to be condensed to a few key relevant scenes. The flashbacks would probably have to go, but maybe there are ways to keep part of them. Szeth would be this mysterious dangerous assassin, but he wouldn't have a focus or anything. Dalinar's story arc would need to happen, but we would see Kaladin's story arc interact with his much quicker. Adolin, as a character, would probably have to go (as much as it saddens me, but at least I would avoid seeing him being cast) or remain in the background unless the producers end up really liking his character in the books and decide to do the opposite. It happens scenarists will push forward minor characters such as Theon in GoT.

  35. I agree with both these points, but considering the recent announcements about DMG and Mistborn, I suspect the most likely scenario is a one-movie-per-book Cinematic Cosmere. So adapting WoK into one movie is worth talking about. I think @Nashan'Elin has the right idea, cutting out the interludes, Shallan, and most of the flashbacks. If the movie is successful, the interludes can be produced as side-projects, like Edgedancer. (Or even a multimedia Expanded Cosmere, with tie-in comics and an animated series!) Shallan's story can start in WoR. And we can probably do without the whole Lirin-Roshone odyssey. The story of Amaram's despicable backstabbery should get the message across just fine. And Kaladin's whole Bridge 4 story might have to be compressed a little, to make room for Dalinar. I think it would be a mistake to under-emphasize Dalinar in all this. (And not just because he's my favourite character.) Of the three main characters in WoK, Dalinar is the least... myopic. He's much more in touch with the epic story that's about to unfold. Through the visions, and his quest to unite Alethkar, he's concerned with Roshar's future, and with its past. The other two, by no fault of their own, are too busy with their own lives to worry about the fate of the world. (at least until WoR.) In other words, Kaladin's story is Kaladin's story -- but Dalinar's story is the Stormlight Archive. (And now I'm imagining Stormlight: The Animated Series.)

  36. I would never cram a story like this into a movie... In fact, I'd see it as a great crime to try to cram a story like this onto a screen. It deserves the nuance and scale that a 1k+ page novel provides.

  37. [bands of Mourning and Secret History Update: Appended to the end of this post. I have not edited the original text of the post, so no one can infer anything about SH based on what I cut, add, or change.] I just finished re-reading the Mistborn trilogy (got the hardcovers for Christmas), and it really jumped out at me on this read-through just how good Vin is at everything. If it had been my first time through the series, it probably would have bothered me how quickly she picks up Allomancy and other tricks. (I read it several years ago, and I don’t recall it sticking out to me, then.) As she’s learning Allomancy, all the Crew members comment on how naturally it comes to her – Marsh, especially, thinks she has already been practicing. Even mundane things, like how influential she is on Camon’s crew or how quickly she adapts to the nobility, stuck out. However, having read (and re-read) everything in the Cosmere, it seemed more like a clue. Mentions of how Vin was a quick learner or trusted her instincts were slipped in about as often as mentions of her earring, Reen’s voice, or how Sazed wore his copperminds on his arms. It made me wonder… what was the secret behind how quickly Vin learned? In the last epigraph of Book 3, Sazed speculates on Vin: Sazed speculates was special because she was chosen by Preservation as a child and possibly drew in some mists. But he doesn’t stop there; he says that there is something else special about Vin, something he doesn’t understand. So, what could it be? Can we figure it out? I kept this thought in mind during my reread, and some thoughts began to coalesce. The crystallizing point for this theory came to me after Kelsier’s death in Book 1, when Vin went back to Kredik Shaw and fought two Inquisitors. She prepared two tricks: arrowheads with rings on them (basically, the same thing Ranette would invent as anti-Coinshot bullets), and pewter dust to blind the inquisitors. It’s one thing if Vin has an affinity to learning how to use Allomancy because she was chosen to take Preservation or because she drew in some mists as a child; but I didn’t see how that would give her these kind of tactics. So, it occurred to me that maybe Vin had these experiences from a previous life. I know reincarnation isn’t a common thing in the Cosmere, but there have been instances of the dead not staying dead (in Warbreaker, obviously, and Kelsier hangs around even if he doesn’t take on a new body). What if an experienced Allomancer who died during the Final Empire hung around like Kelsier did, but instead of sticking around and meddling, she (assuming it’s a lady Allomancer, as I will go into more detail below) bestowed her experiences upon Vin? Before I dive in to the specifics, I’ll include a brief Table of Contents of the theory. Vin’s Unearned Experience: the instances of Vin’s surprising aptitude Vin vs Valette: Vin views herself as a combination of two or more people Déjà vu: the pieces required for a reincarnation are already present in the series Guess Who?: speculation as to Vin’s previous identity Hoid: maybe this explains what warned her away from him Kelsier: the ramifications on the future of the series Part 1: Vin’s Unearned Experience So, Vin obviously picks up Allomancy very quickly in TFE. Not only does she burn pewter and zinc on instinct, but she learns all of the metals extremely quickly. Other areas of her training, like acting like a noble or even her time on Camon’s crew, come to her naturally, and her instincts guide her. Instincts became the keyword that I looked for; anywhere Vin trusted her instincts (or, even better, her instincts told her something, an active-voice sentence with “instincts” as the subject). I also looked for instances where the word “instincts” wasn’t expressly name-dropped, but people remarked how Vin learned very quickly. (Or I thought she learned too quickly.) Basically, any place that her past life could be manifesting. See the full list below. It’s roughly chronological order, not by importance. I’ve italicized the points that are more circumstantial; the good examples are all un-italicized. On the first mission Vin went on with Camon’s crew, this quote jumped out at me when Vin first became suspicious: Ooh, an internal voice. We haven’t seen those before. Later on, she thinks something along the same lines: Two active voice verbs, where Vin is the object, not the subject. As if something else is acting upon her. Is this Ruin’s influence? I don’t think so. Her earring isn’t in at this point in the novel; she starts wearing it after they get back to the lair, and she prepares to sneak out. These “instincts” can’t be Ruin’s influence. So, to summarize, Vin’s instincts tipped her off to the Ministry’s tactics, even when Camon, an experienced crewleader, was falling for the trap. Experience beyond her station. She responds surprisingly well to Kelsier using zinc on her when he first meets her. “Somehow” is a squirrely Sanderson word for when there’s something behind the scenes. (Okay, not every time, but it’s still a red flag.) Vin could have recognized this from her previous life experiences. When it’s just just her and Kell and Dox, she also resists his Soothing: After resisting his soothing, we see another interesting sentence: There’s that dang “instinct-as-a-subject” construction again. Pushing her to stick with Kelsier and learn Allomancy. That last point aside, the main takeaway from this point is that Vin has experience in recognizing and resisting emotional Allomancy. Vin picks up being a Noblewoman very quickly. She sums up her experience during the first planning meeting with the crew: However, when rubber meets the road, she knocks it out of the park. A sampling of praise: And she keeps getting better. According to Sazed, in Chapter 24 of TFE: Maybe because she’s a reincarnated noble? Vin acknowledges in Hero of Ages how she took to the nobility naturally, because it was a part of her. I won’t quote that in-depth at this point in the theory; see Section 2 for a more in-depth analysis of what this means for her character. Just a quote of interest from when Vin trains in steelpushing. Circumstantial evidence; doesn’t support reincarnation, but takes on new meaning. The coin pouch trick is more substantial. Vin teaches Kelsier a new trick after only a few months of training, the first (of many) times she displays her Allomatic tactical ability. In fact, in Kell’s words: “Fantastic progress”… maybe because she’s remembering skills she had in her past life. The push-match also struck me as uncharacteristic of Vin. She had always avoided direct confrontation, but here, she throws her weight directly at Kelsier, getting in a Push-match. Maybe that’s an instinct from her past life, where she may have been larger and it was an effective tactic. Again, not supporting evidence, but something that takes on new meaning. The evidence from this passage is how Vin learns super-fast. As she thinks to herself: Kelsier is speaking with Sazed later. That last line is Sazed. Sound familiar? (It’s because he calls her special in the HoA epilogue epigraph.) So, yes, her instincts (*cough* past life experience *cough*) make her special. When Sazed is quizzing her as she gets her hair cut, he says: Add another tally mark to the “Vin, you’re so good at everything” comments. Remember when Kelsier said Vin only was good at the physical metals? Soon after that, she sits in on one Breeze session where she realizes how to Soothe subtly. She follows Kell as he goes to find Camon, and sooths him. He catches on, but only barely. His thoughts: I know how! It’s her past life experience coming through! Learning the spikeway quickly was another example of her Allomantic tactics. I won’t do the full quote, but the narration does say “She got the hang of it quickly.” When Sazed rescues her from the Inquisitors, he gives her some of Ham’s pewter to heal. He says: Vin was unconsciously burning pewter when she was on Camon’s crew – she recognizes it when Kelsier gives it to her for the first time. Her body has been familiar with Allomancy for a long time. As Marsh says later: Again, we learn that… Vin is special. “Instincts” pops up again, but in an interesting context, after Vin has gone to a number of balls. An interesting take on her part, since it doesn’t seem she’s losing instincts, but gaining new ones. Also, “Valette” is natural because her previous life experience was a noblewoman. (See the next major section.) Training with Marsh. A huge clue. Marsh gives the spiel, gets her burning bronze, and asks her what she feels: What takes practice comes naturally to Vin… it’s been the story of her life as she learns Allomancy. Again, I suggest that this is because she actually does have prior experience. This doesn’t really have anything to do with anything, but I suspect Vin unconsciously burns gold in Chapter 24. She just came from a ball, where I suspect they had gold-plated utensils (I looked over the chapter, and I didn’t see any mention of anything), and she’s sitting with the crew, having a good time. She imagines she sees herself out in the shadows, as she was before she met the crew. Sounds a lot like the gold shadow she sees of herself later. Anyways, it’s of no substance to this theory, except maybe showing she can unconsciously burn more obscure metals. Allomantic tactics. When fighting Shan, she extinguishes her atium a few seconds early, tricking Shan into thinking that she had run out. When she turns it back on, she confuses Shan, and Vin kills her. A nice bit of trickery for someone who has thus far only burnt Atium against other Atium-burning Inquisitors (and she got subsequently steamrolled by them). Again, unearned experience; tactics she may have learned in her previous life. Kelsier notices how good she is: He goes on to tell her that directly: Allomancy is nothing but tricks, and Vin comes up with new tricks time and time again, things that Kelsier and even the Inquisitors (coming up in another bullet point) don’t have figured out. Ah, the Inquisitor fight in TFE Chapter 36. The place where this theory came together for me. I won’t quote the passage directly, but Vin uses rings on arrowheads to launch un-Steel-able projectiles to shred one Inquisitor, then uses a cloud of pewter dust to blind another. These don’t come from being strong in Allomancy; these are tactics, tricks. Vin comes up with these all the time. Why did she think of these when others didn’t? She even thinks that she wasn’t sure how their eyes worked, but she knew a perfect way to block out their senses. How did she know? Here, more than anywhere else, when her soul is damaged by Kelsier’s loss, her past life begins to creep in the cracks, giving her the training and experiences of her past life to help her with her battles. Oh my, I’ve got this many examples, and I’m only starting WoA. Hoo boy. Anyways, we start off with some more talk about Vin being “special,” this time from Elend as she spars with Ham. She winds up beating Ham, a good thug. Vin is a quick learner when it comes to fighting, too, not just when it comes to Allomancy. He also remarks on her strength in Allomancy; she might have her Allomatic strength determined by her previous life’s strength, during a time when Mistborn were more powerful (not as powerful as Elend, though). She gives OreSeur dog bones. That’s another new tactic – no kandra had used animal bones before, as we find out in Book 3. Vin really does come up with these all the time. I wonder how she does it… She instantly picks up Duralumin-Steelpushing herself. She first uses it to go rescue Breeze, and she lands at just the right spot. A brand new skill, and she does it perfectly the first time. I think she might have past-life experience with duralumin. She wasn’t the only one to discover it; the Lord Ruler mentioned it in one of the storage caverns. There’s another very powerful clue for me when Vin was researching the Deepness. She starts the chapter being barely trained in writing: A very clear picture: Vin has little experience writing, and is not good at it. But, apparently, she can write very well anyways. Vin, of course, brushes it off and starts talking about the Straff’s army. But it seems a little heavy-handed to me. Perfect penmanship? What an odd thing to mention. The only thing more Mary Sue-ish would be… …oh, no, she’s also the most graceful person in a dress. When Tindwyl takes her and Allrianne shopping: *gag* I certainly hope this is indicating she spent a long (previous) life as a Mistborn noblewoman. Because otherwise, this is getting out-of-hand with how good Vin is at everything. And then, we have The Big One. Taking down Zane. Beating someone burning atium without your own atium. And what word shows up in the narrative? Instinct: that word keeps popping up. She let her body do what it wanted to. This is a crazy technique, and, again, it’s one she does perfectly without practice. It reminds me of the way she resisted Kelsier’s Soothing when she first met him. She has experience resisting Allomancy; mental metals, and now atium. Techniques I think she learned in her past life. Vin doesn’t think she’s the first to figure it out: If it was a technique she had done in a prior life… then, yes, Vin, you were the first to think of it. And the second to think of it, as well. Maybe someone else can take bronze… (that’s a reference to Olympic metals, not Allomantic metals.) Oh, and don’t forget the flying horseshoes trick. The annotations say that she is the first one to pick up that particular trick. So, that’s not one tactic that’s definitely not from a previous life. Oh, good, things are going a lot quicker through the rest of the trilogy. I’m on to Hero of Ages, now, and I’m 30 chapters in before Vin does something surprisingly well. It’s when they crash Yomen’s party. She dives in from a position of power, something she had never had in her previous ball interactions, and she instantly takes to it. Elend notices: So, there are three main categories where these examples fall in to: Learning Allomancy quickly, learning Tactics and Fighting quickly, and learning Nobility quickly. If it were just Allomancy, I could believe it was enhanced intuition provided by Preservation. Even the anti-atium and anti-Inquisitor tactics, on a good day. But all three categories? It seems too much of a stretch that being chosen as Preservation’s hero would give her penmanship and the mindset of a noble. So, I think these experiences come from a past life as a noble. Part 2: Vin vs Valette One major theme of Vin’s character arc is reconciling her two different personas. She wonders, is she Vin the street urchin? Or is she Valette the noblewoman? Eventually, she determines that her true self is a combination of the two. She needs to incorporate both the experience gained on the street with the noblewoman who goes to balls. This conflict is presented from the beginning, from Kelsier’s first training session with her: When she was thinking of how “Lord Renoux” adopted his persona: She begins to realize that she isn’t actually either of them, but something else entirely. From WoA, Chapter 35: She tries to push the “Valette” persona off as an act, but her conversation with Tindwyl when they were dress-shopping begins to change that. Vin says she sees a problem with wearing dresses because it wasn’t really her; Tindwyl asks, “And these can’t dresses be part of who you really are?” More pointedly: This conflict continues, somewhat, into HoA, Chapter 27: She eventually realizes in Chapter 32 that being a noble is an essential part of her: Since I was thinking about the context of reincarnation, this took on a different meaning to me entirely. Vin isn’t just a combination of her two sets of experiences… what if she is a combination of two different people? Vin the street urchin represents her current life experiences. Valette the noblewoman (and Allomatic experience) comes from a previous life. As she struggles with these two halves of herself, she’s actually trying to merge her current and previous identities, to create who she truly is. Oddly enough, combining multiple people into one is a concept that is presented elsewhere in the Mistborn trilogy. Koloss and Steel Inquisitors are both described as being multiple people combined into one. Steel inquisitors first, by Noorden, the friendly obligator. Immediately afterwards, Elend realized how koloss were created: I thought it was an odd way of characterizing the change; Hemalurgy has been presented more as stealing someone else’s attributes, not combining multiple people. But it gave me some insight into how Vin could be the combination of two people. Marsh was still Marsh, even though he had other people “combined” into him. Same with Human the koloss; the annotations give his backstory, so he is a real person. The reincarnation isn’t a Wheel of Time kind of reincarnation (like the Heroes of the Horn being spun out into new identities), but someone who has already died giving up her experience to Vin. I don’t think I’m saying Vin is a Hemalurgic creation; the experiences of a past life spiked onto an orphan girl. But I think it’s a similar concept, not necessarily carried out using that magic system. Part 3: Déjà vu So, conceptually, it’s a bit of a stretch to say Vin’s experiences belonged to a dead person. I get that – there isn’t a single hint of this kind of previous lives in the trilogy (or even in Alloy or SoS). But I think all the pieces are there in the trilogy itself. Dead individuals stick around. Kelsier sticks around. Vin’s previous incarnation could have stuck around in a similar fashion. Combining multiple people into one. I discussed this in Part 2, so I won’t go into detail here. The gods made Vin special. According to Sazed, Preservation chose Vin after she was born, because she snapped so early. Ruin also made his mark on her when she was young, spiking her with her sister’s Bronze ability. A third individual, “meddling” like Kelsier, could have also imparted past life experiences onto her. Souls can return to bodies. Sazed says that he didn’t figure it out in time to resurrect Vin and Elend, but WoB says it’s possible. http://theoryland.com/intvmain.php?i=727 Minds can be used to power magic. I’m not sure my Realmatics are quite right, but we saw Preservation turn his mind (soul?) into Investiture to imprison Ruin. It wasn’t his body, his Shard’s power; it was just his mind. The mind of Vin’s past life could be the power behind this reincarnation of its experiences. So, while the way I’ve assembled them may be novel, I think that it is a natural progression of what is presented in the novels. Part 4: Guess Who? I strained my eyes looking through the pages, trying to figure out who could have been Vin’s previous life. This person had to be dead before Vin was born (duh), and they had had to be born after Allomancy was discovered (because Vin knew tricks against both Steel Inquisitors and atium burners). And, lastly, this person had to be a Mistborn (since Vin had good instincts in all metals). I also think that her previous incarnation needed to be a noblewoman, because of how her internal conflict played out between orphan and noblewoman. I guess it could have been a nobleman, but Vin always sounds secure in her femininity. She’s a combination of Noble and Urchin, not a combination of Man and Woman. Now, gender and status aren’t deal-breakers; if I could find a character who met the previous three conditions who was a non-noble or a man, I would consider them a strong candidate. So, boil this all down, compare it to characters from the books… and I’ve got nothing. Gemmel is the only Mistborn who’s dead before the series begins, but he was still alive after Vin was born. (Also, not a girl.) Alendi crossed my mind, but he was only a Seeker, and he never fought Atium burners. Other than that, we don’t know much about the history of the world. So, I can’t point to an individual who I think was Vin’s previous life. But I can describe what I think she was like: a noblewoman Mistborn. Part 5: Hoid Now, the part where this really got fun was when Vin decided to avoid Hoid (hmm, that might be the Cosmere name for Tag. Avoid Hoid. It’s got a nice ring to it.) Uhh… let’s try this again. When Vin decided to avoid Hoid (stay on target), she trusted her instincts. Remember, Instincts = Past Life in this theory. So, something about her past life told her to stay away from Hoid. But what could it be? All Vin heard was humming. She didn’t even see Hoid. Just heard him. What was he humming, anyways? I wonder if Vin recognized it. Could it have been a song she knew in her past life. Has Hoid visited Scadrial before? Did he work with Vin’s past life, someone who knew that song? That’s a very Hoid thing to do; hum a song from a bygone era that no one living knows (except Vin has a vague memory of it because of her past life). And, hey, let’s go down the rabbit hole. Hoid was looking for the Well of Ascension to get a Lerasium bead. Vin’s previous life might have thought she was the Hero of Ages as well, looking for the Well of Ascension, even though the thousand years hadn’t passed. After she died, she stuck around, and saw who Preservation chose to take her power and use the Well of Ascension. And she (old Vin) decided to grant her experience and skill to the new Vin. Mad speculation, of course. We know precious little about what Hoid has been up to. I have no idea what Vin’s previous life was all about. So, please disregard the previous paragraph. (I’ll stand by the rest of this section, though.) Part 6: Kelsier So, this is a fairly complex undercurrent for Vin’s character. If Brandon was writing something like this into her arc, how is he going to get it across to the readers, now that the trilogy has been concluded? What are the ramifications on the future of the series? He doesn’t have plans for flashback books, so how would we ever learn about Vin’s past life? I’ve compared Vin’s previous life to Kelsier a number of times throughout the theory. That’s where I think it becomes relevant: not in learning about Vin, but as a key trait of a character in a future trilogy who Kelsier reincarnates into. He would grant his experiences, his motivations, to a new character, to aid them in… well, whatever a future Mistborn trilogies would be about. That way, we can learn about the circumstances of reincarnation, without going back to Vin. We learn it all through new eyes, and then someone like Harmony says, “I’ve seen this before. Although we didn’t realize it at the time, the Ascendant Warrior had the experiences of another to aid her. What you have is what remains of Kelsier, the Survivor. You can trust it.” Except, probably in much more epic language. That also would let us see some of that hinted-at Hoid/Kelsier animosity! Vin was known as the Heir to the Survivor. I don’t think she inherited anything from him, though; I think she was the Heir to someone else’s experiences. This hypothetical future incarnation of Kelsier, however… he would be the true Heir to the Survivor. Another mythical Hero who we thought was Vin this whole time, only to have the rug pulled out from under us. Again. Summary Okay, here’s the gist: Vin is so good at what she does because a dead person has passed along her experiences and skills. That is why Vin learn so quick and come up with her tricks, and it also contributes to her “identity crisis” between skaa and noblewoman. This might become relevant in the future if Kelsier reincarnates himself in the same fashion. Also, sorry for direct-quoting 30% of the text of the Mistborn trilogy throughout this post. 38. RP, Conner witnessed the murder, and winced. the poor guy didn't deserve that. He looked around and saw the faces of the people around him and notice a few looking sick. Later he noticed one sitting on the floor, then getting up with eyes of fire. She stormed off and Connor heard "The innocent WILL be avenged." Conner saw her and another grab some shovels and, deciding that it was the right thing to do, he joined them.

  40. What Gunther saw, he could not say... but he saw something. The other thing was... Gunther couldn't speak. At least not for a sentence. When he did speak, it was booming a single word out over the next two miles. It was useful when he... stepped... into a room of fighting people to yell "STOP", but why would he want to step up to someone and blast "POODLE"? Horatio looked at the dead human. He looked very... sad? Perhaps it was because he was dead. The other dead human did not look as sad, rather stabbed. Horatio picked some chalk dust off himself. Now that the fight was over, he had no use for Squigly, Bob, and... what was that one called? Anyways, Gunther was too slow to bother to clean up after himself, so there was chalk all over. Horatio wandered over to the camp boundary. Beyond that barrier of protective chalk lurked hordes of vicious wild chalklings, hungry for... human flesh? Probably all flesh, since they don't have any. His reverie complete, he scampered over to Gunther and climbed up to his shoulder, Horatio's favorite spot. A real vantage point it was.

  43. Why do I get the feeling Kell has refused to do anything with Allomantic gold? I think he'd be really uncomfortable with the possibilities and be unwilling to interact with images at all. I think burning gold forces one to take an honest look at themselves and their choices and this is DEFINATELY something Kelsier has trouble with. Or, in other words, I don't think he has a clue, the whole thing is making him very uncomfortable, and the thought that you can interact with those shadows, that they could be real on some level bothers him intensely - or would if he would actually examine his feelings on the matter. Which he won't, soooo... He just insists it's impossible. The scene tells us more about them, then about gold. I think we should go by Miles actions in Alloy with regard to that.

  44. I asked a ton. I can barely remember what I did ask. I was very excited so my memory is hazy. I got RAFO'd when I asked about the Shard which didn't Invest, the one floating in the space, the one that just wants to hide+survive (I'm not really sure that we know all these things apply to the same Shard). hm... I asked about technological progress on other worlds than Scadrial: Taldain was progressing technologically... but then Autonomy did the isolation thing and it stopped. Roshar is headed towards magicpunk since they've got a ton of Investiture flying around. I asked about AI/sentient machines in cosmere... but without the recording on hand I don't want to feed you mistruths. I asked a lot about AonDor - turns out you could write a higher-level programming language with that. I think he said there is a way to make functions (so object oriented programming). I asked about going deeper to access the assembler and he said that there are things we don't know about Sel yet and why magic works that way but my impression was he said he'll dig into it eventually. I took a shot at the Terriswoman in Warbreaker, he asked what do we think and I said one of the nurses. He didn't confirm but said something like that I shouldn't be able to make that guess and was surprised I did. I think he said that we will eventually figure this out/we'll get to know her. We asked about films, Brandon said that he'd want to do cameos where he dies every time. Like ultimate Redshirt. Oh, and he said my shirt was awesome. I agreed. ... And I may have left my printed list of questions in his room.

  45. I'm not so sure about Jasnah's perspective there - recall the amount of effort Shallan had to put in to gain her consideration, let alone her respect. I suppose it's less a matter of age and more a matter of intellectual standing, but Jasnah does seem to pick and choose the people she respects very carefully, and I doubt she'd be anything but put off by Kaladin's attitude ("I’m offensive and asinine on my own time too" is not the kind of thing likely to win her heart.)

  46. Feather, as other said in this thread before me, the biggest problem with shipping Kaladin in a gay relationship is simply the fact that he didn't expressed any romantic or sexual interest in men, while he definitely showed interest in women (there is Tarah, who most likely had something romantic with him, before he did something that ruined the relationship, and not to mention his thoughts about Shallan after the chasm scene, I mean, he his daydreaming about her voice). Also, a man describing another man handsome doesn't mean he is gay... I mean, I know more than one men who are *definitely* not gay, but doesn't have problems describing some actors as "handsome", it doesn't mean they are in the closet. I think that both Kalarin and Kadolin ships' only hope is as a bromance ships, which is great on its own. Not every relationship a charcter have need to be romantic, after all. There are some bromantic relationships that are even stronger than normal relationships (à la JD and Turk from Scrubs), thous kind of relationships can express care without anything sexual in it. Also, regarding they sort of denial, both Adolin and Kaladin are in a desperate need for a friend, Adolin just discovering that anyone he thought was his fried didn't really cared for him in any way (one of his "best friends" fought against him in an obviously unfair fight), and Kaladin needing someone who didn't see him as his commander (like his friends in Bridge 4). They both started the relationship with some kind of a prejudice, Kaladin hating lighteyes and thinking Adolin is a spoiled brat, while Adolin thinks that Kaladin is way over his head and is just a darkeye who shouldn't have bossed him around in the Tower. They both later discovered that they did like each other, but like good males, were stubborn about admitting it. To me, it all look like great setting for a great bromance, with nothing romantic or sexual in it, that is, if Adolin won't lose himself after the murder and the fact that they are both obvious smitten by Shallan won't get in the way.
