  1. I have stolen techniques from unwary fantasy authors. I wrote the Black Symphony. I cheated in the english exam and left with both my sanity and my life (albeit grouchy and full of Adrenalin). I started writing novels at a younger age than most people begin to read epic fantasy. I write words by moonlight that others praise during the day (I hope). I have talked to novelists, loved books, and written assignments that make the teachers weep. I am a dynamic figure, often seen crushing stone and scaling mountains. I have been known to remodel the school building in my lunch break, making it more efficient in heat retention. I manage my time perfectly. On one occasion, I was reported to float three metres in the air. I amaze teachers by teaching concepts which they struggle to understand. I cook five-minutes noodles in two minutes. I am a I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru. Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, I once single-handedly defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of ferocious army ants. I have climbed mountains, dammed rivers, and trekked to places all those that have ever touched upon their soil have been taken by the rift of time. I play the piano with one foot, I play the guitar with no hands, and the saxophone with my mouth closed. I enjoy parkour every Wednesday and Thursday, and on Tuesday I spend my time remodelling famous bridges and towers. Once a week, to let off steam, I compose top-grossing songs while participating in full-contact origami. I ahve spoken with Trump, Elvis and Ramses the Second. I read The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance in one afternoon and spent the rest of the day starring on a inter-planetary gameshow, which I won with exceeding grace. I have seen the Twin Towers erupt in a blazing flame, and saved thirty people from its fires. I am a ruthless artist, a sharp-witted book analyst, and a NASA space flight program graduate. The laws of physics do not apply to me. But I have not yet posted on the 17th Shard. My name is NamelessThirteenth. You may have heard of me.

  5. I've searched through the forum and haven't found any threads specifically discussing this, which is a little surprising. If such a thread exists and I missed it, I apologize. Now on to the topic. What's the deal with Aesudan Kholin, Elhokar's wife? In the WOR prologue, we learn that Jasnah was contemplating having Aesudan assassinated by Liss before changing her mind and having her merely spy on the queen for the time being. But why? what's so special about Aesudan? Who is she? What sort of threat does Jasnah believe her to pose to her family that she is willing to go as far as have her assassinated? Sure Aesudan, as shown in Lhan's interlude chapter in WOR, is definitely not a really good person nor a good ruler, throwing lavish parties and being excessive, wasteful and out of touch with and uncaring of the common people. All of this make her a terrible person but it's not enough to justify Jasnah's actions against her. Like Jasnah had to have been convinced that Aesudan was serious bad news for her family to even contemplate going as far as an assassination attempt. Not to mention Jasnah had this planned while Gavilar was still alive, so Aesudan wasn;t even queen then. There's also the fact that Bordin, said to be one of Dalinar's most trusted servants, had been left behind in Alethkar to spy on Aesudan, or at least this is what Mraize claims. If that's true then does that mean Dalinar shares at least some of Jasnah's suspicions regarding the queen? I highly doubt he knows about Liss and Jasnah's almost assassination attempt against Aesudan since I'm sure he wouldn't have approved of it. But both Dalinar and Jasnah must now something about Aesudan that warrants having people spy on her. And how do the Ghostbloods know about, for that matter how much do they know? Is Aesudan somehow connected to them? Or maybe she's associated with the Diagram or some other secret organization since Roshar seems to be crawling with them. I think it's pretty obvious that there's more to her but what? There's something else mentioned in the Lhan interlued that might also be relevant somehow: Why is that? What has she done or things she's done that led her to believe the Almight might be displeased with her? I don't have any concrete theories about this yet myself, gotta do a little more investigation, dig a little deeper, look for more hints and foreshadowings and things like that if there are any in the relevant chapters before forming one. But I figured I start this discussion here to see what you guys think and if any of you have any theories/ speculations of your own or know of any WOBs regarding this because this is something that has been on my mind since I finished WOR.

  7. =O That paper sword is so cool, @Darkness Ascendant!! My good news: My birding field trip starts tomorrow!! My ornithology class (~60 students, plus 2 TAs and our professor) will be spending most of Thursday driving to a remote ranch in southern Utah's desert, stopping at multiple hotspots along the way to birdwatch. We'll spend all of Friday on the ranch chasing birds and drive back on Saturday, possibly stopping to bird some more on the way back, depending on how exhausted everyone is. I am unbelievably excited about this trip. Like, all of these at once: The only downside is that the ranch has no Internet, so I'll be offline for the vast majority of the next three days. I might find some Wi-Fi when we stop for meals during the drive there and back, but no guarantees. But hopefully I'll have lots of photos of cool birds to share when I get back!

  11. Something just occurred to me regarding unknown Blades and Liss. And I could be way way off here but I'll mention it anyway. We know that Taln's Honorblade was swapped for a Shardblade of unknown origin at some point between his arrival in Kholinar at the end of WOK and his arrival at the Shattered Plains in WOR. Now since I'm pretty sure Liss is still in Kholinar spying on Aesudan, and she's, as far as I know, the only Shardbearer present in Kholinar at this point, could she have swapped her Blade for Taln's Honorblade? Admittedly I'm not really well-informed on the current theories about the Taln's Honorblade, so someone might've already come up with a better theory or there could be WoB I don't know about that contradicts mine, or maybe someone has already proposed this theory somewhere. BUT if not, then its' worth consideration at least. I mean it's pretty likely, though I don't know what Liss's motivation would be for doing this - maybe she just wanted an Honorblade - but it's a possibility nonetheless.

  15. There probably actually is a connection, even though what @Genesis is saying also sounds fairly accurate. Essentially you have a Cognitive aspect that is trapped in a single form. In the dead Shardblade's case, it seems to be like a loop of eternally experiencing the moment of their Bond being severed, as they were locked into their Bladeform. In the case of Stormform Listeners, you have them locked in a Voidform and distressed over that.

  20. In LG30, my character, Ralaanar, was an artist. I decided to run with that and drew several pieces for it. Ashetvl "Whatcha doing, Ralaanar?" "Um, drawing. Yeah. Just drawing." "Can I see it?" "Um, um -- hey!" "Is it that rude woman from the party? Ashewhatsherface?" "Um...." Rissa "Draw me like an Honorspren, Ralaanar." "Um, um, what?" "It's not fair that only Honorspren get drawn as the humanlike ones. I wanna look human too." "What, uh, did you do to yourself?" "Oh, I just grew into this position. Took about an hour. Hurry up, it's getting uncomfortable." "Uh, okay..."

  21. The nightwatcher steps down. Drake momentarily ascends to the position of nightwatcher, grinning manically. Listening attentively for a wish... Staccato looks on in horror as he realizes what he has done by granting this wish. "I wish to know the true name of shshshshshshshsh and not be rendered mad in the process." Aha! I know just the bane for you... "Grante--" Suddenly, a stranger jumps forward in between Staccato and Drake-turned-nightwatcher and grants Staccato's wish. What? What is this sorcery! Ultimately, it doesn't matter. All this windrunner fellow has done is switched himself out with Staccato... He shall receive my bane, then. Muahahahahah... "You're wish is granted. Brandon Sanderson somehow discovers how to use cosmere magic on earth. In an accident involving hemalurgy, he ends up turning a stranger into a hemalurgically deranged mutant. That stranger is you. In part because he feels responsible for you, and in part to cover it up, he ends up adopting you. It soon becomes evident that the process cannot be reversed without killing you. He is kind to you, but you aren't ever allowed to leave or go outside, being a hemalurgically deranged mutant and all. If you escaped you would probably be captured and dissected or something." I wish for prescience. I'll also throw in the wish that I don't receive Taravangian's bane, if just because I'd prefer something original.

  22. If Aesudan were working with the Diagramists, that would probably mean she is acting spoiled and selfish on purpose. Her actions would turn people against her and the leadership, creating the discontent and riots currently gappening. That way, when Mr. T comes in with his Jah Keved army, the people would welcome him with open arms due to his reputation as a kind and generous ruler. Storms, I like this theory. The two of them could basically just be playing good cop bad cop on the scale of countries. The main problem with this is that Mr. T never thought about or mentioned her in any of his chapters, which you would expect him to if she were such an important part of his plans.

  23. (Edit: Sorry this is a bit of a wall of text) I just started a new job at a company that has a food court style cafeteria on the 25th floor (swanky no?). A couple of days ago I was waiting for my order and I got confused as to which order was currently be handled. I approached the server (who I now know is named Kyle) and asked him if he was working on number 16 (my order). He replied "Yes, this is number 16. And hey, what a coincidence, that is my favorite number!" Well, perhaps many of you can already guess where this is headed. I immediately said that if 16 is his favorite number then he should definitely read the Mistborn trilogy as the number 16 eventually has some significance in the story. He and I then chatted about the story for a few minutes and he had me spell the title to help him remember. The next day I saw Kyle again at the cafeteria and he asked me the name of the book I recommended. I realized what I needed to do. That day, after work, I went to Barnes and Nobles and bought a copy of Mistborn: the Final Empire. Today, I gifted that copy to Kyle! So, you know you are a Sanderfan when you buy the cafeteria server at your work a copy of Mistborn because they mentioned, offhand, that 16 is their favorite number.

  26. I'll disagree on this as well. Jasnah said that she hadn't been there fully before, but she has been there before. We have no proof that painspren don't harm more normally, so that's not an argument of something different. I disagree on the WoR excerpt as well. It feels unlikely that the writer was a Knight Radiant, so would have little understanding of the cognitive realm, so of course it would feel far and distant from some explanations. Furthemore, since spren are cognitive entities it makes sense that the cognitive realm is their realm, without need for some separation. Overall, I don't think there's anything which indicates it's possible for there to be two overlapping cognitive areas for the same physical location, and most of what we've seen indicates that the spren are existing in the same Cognitive Realm that is visited each time by either Shallan or Jasnah.

  27. I really didn't want to get sucked into another one of these threads, but I always see one small thing that needs to be pointed out, and then I have to reply to the whole post b/c double posting is bad Anyway... So that's where you got the term from. Subastral looked so out of place when you first started using it, and I hadn't seen anyone use the term except you. (And apparently Hoid, even if I don't remember him doing so) I'm very curious about why you think Spren have their own Subastral. As far as I was aware, they live in the human one, as it's the Cognitive Realm of Roshar, and they largely function in the Cognitive. Tis a sad day when I can say that trusting the Coppermind's assertions and ideas is a bad idea. Countless pages are in need of updating with the wealth of recent knowledge, and the community can only work so quickly. Shards are primarily Spiritual, where location means nothing. I am curious about how that plays into the "exact spot they invest," not even considering the fact that it can happen naturally just by being there. You are confusing terms. Aona did not "divest from the planet," she merely died and is for all intents and purposes, still invested in Sel. That is why they still have fully functioning magic systems and a Shardpool. It's the same with Honor. Final thing: that WoB says that there is at least one Shard has a Shardpool on a planet they are not currently on. It does not in any way say that a Shard abandoned their Pool.

  30. The windy city. Thorn was here by will of his father Loki. To gather Venti and other foreign monsters in preparation for ragnarok. Thorn sighed, looking around the city. It was truly a daunting task, especially when he was unable to use his magic. It was like running a marathon with both his legs sawed off. Well technically he was still capable of doing magic, but the end result would be disastrous Loki had masked his presence from Ullr, but the dude was literally the god of hunting. Any extreme burst of magic on Thorn’s end would have the same effect as bleeding near a school of sharks. It would bring Ullr right on his heels. One really did not want Ullr on their heels. Thorn’s phone buzzed, causing him to flinch. Their where very few people that Thorn had intrusted with that number-phones were dangerous- and there was definitely no one he wanted to deal with right now. Sighing, he reluctantly reached into his pocket and took out his phone. Then he snarled, causing the mortals around him to give with a wide berth. It was from Randolph Chase. Thorn had barely even reached the city, and Loki was already interfering. You understand the gravity of the situation. Magnus has received the sword from the Draugr. This means that I will be free within the week, thanks in no small part to your sisters. I need that army now. Do not fail me. Thorn stood there, feeling a mixture of shock and appal. So soon. Thorn was ineffectively trying to process what Loki’s freedom would mean for the world when a second message appeared on the screen. Oh, and don’t worry about using your powers. I have temporarily distracted Ullr. Thorn smiled for the first time in what felt like forever. Not being able to escape human form had been painful, to say the least. Thorn would do his duty, and think about how he would deal with Loki later. Perhaps control of the army would give him leverage. He looked around. A male teenage wearing a blue t-shirt that had the letters SPQR was staring at him, but other than that he was ignored.Thorn disregarded the teenager-mortals had trouble seeing magic-then jumped about thirty feet off the ground. In the air, he transformed into an eagle. His eyes grew sharper. Downbelow him, the teenager looked up him in shock. Thorn wondered he was one of the few whose eyes could pierce through the mist. Maybe he was a demigod. It made little difference and Thorn quickly put the boy out of his mind. He began making his way toward Millennium Park. Venti were literally devil-horses made of stormclouds, literally caos made incarnate. How hard could it be to convince them to join the war that would lay waste to the nine realms?

  32. One possible explanation for why Liss might take the blade: She's a Herald. She would know what an Honorblade is and might be inclined to grab one, if only to get access to Stormlight healing again. I thought it might be possible to speculate on which Herald she could be until I realized that Taln's blade shares no Surges with those possessed by the female Heralds, so whichever of them picked it up they'd be getting powers they'd never had access to before. Though based on the idea that the Herald's personal insanities are related in some way to their former nature, Chana might be the most likely. Anyhow, one more possible wrinkle given how many other Heralds seem to have been hanging out in Kholinar at the time. As for why Jasnah was considering having Aesudan whacked and then changed her mind, it might be less that she was uncertain about Aesudan and more uncertain if this was a good time. Wait and see how the treaty affects things, maybe even wait and see if the woman improves some rather than moving immediately. There's probably something Jasnah knows that we don't informing her decision but it's at least possible she was just questioning the timing of assassinating her sister in law and then when Gavilar died she had other things to occupy her time and didn't think killing the then-queen would be in her family's best interests just then. Really a better question is: What happened in the past couple of months that made Aesudan change so rapidly? Because Navani obviously thought the capital was going to be in decent enough hands enough to leave and it's hard to imagine she'd fail to see the disaster looming if Aesudan was acting that way before she left. Unmade, involvment with a secret society (you can't swing a dead chull around on Roshar without flattening half a dozen members of one), deliberately poor advice from someone who wanted things to deteriorate and cultivated her paranoia about the Almighty's opinion of her...

  34. It felt good to be free again. He didn’t hold any resentment over getting locked away, after all he agreed to the process but that didn’t mean Jack had enjoyed the confinement. Barely a moment later, he was stationed with Autumn in her office. To quickly to get a chance to meet up with his squad but Donna should be informing them now. He could use that time to consider how he'd want to run them while employed as Autumn's bodyguard. He hardly could turn the church into a military base. Though, Autumn would likely approve of Banner as company. Then there was the matter of him joining them in the field, there weren't any signs of Vondra planning to pull him away from the bodyguard post despite the chaos developing outside. Jack silently hoped it was only a sign of Vondra's confidence in dealing with the situation. His eyes wandered down to Autumn, earnestly dealing with whatever paperwork that had gathered in her absence. The sight of her brought a smile to his face. His team would be able to handle themselves alone out there. He shelved his train of thought when he heard footsteps approach. There was no sign of struggle with the guards outside. Just to be safe, he still stayed on guard. If someone had slipped past the guards posted outside, it was his job to stop them anyway. The girl that entered was unlikely to be a danger to Autumn. In fact Lyla wasn’t a physical danger to anyone but… "Holy calamity it's Vapour Snake." Her enthusiasm towards Epics quite frankly made him uncomfortable. Epics were creatures with a poisoned mind. The fact that she was so eager to drink even the smallest drop of that poison she could find made Jack worry about the girl’s state of mind. Yet every attempt on his part to talk her out of it would only lead to her feeling validated by the attention of an Epic. She’d also try to make him give into his poison with her ravings and praise but at least she was so clumsy about it that there wasn’t a chance of it influencing her. He’d be more worried about the gushing running afoul of his mood. He felt relieved when Autumn took care of the talking. They shared a short look and Jack gave her a thankful smile. But while Autumn tried to pull Lyla’s attention on her, that didn’t stop the girl from staring at him. The way her eyes constantly hung on him like he was some kind of commodity made him want to squirm. He suppressed the urge to keep up appearance but couldn’t stop himself from pulling up his collar in a futile attempt to cover a bit more of his face. No matter how uncomfortable he feeled in his skin, he still noticed Lyla jamming in a completely unrelated question after she mentioned the Panda pictures, which she likely had taken more for her own sake than for the city. He also noticed the look of self-satisfaction on her face as she yet again sized him up. His first impulse was annoyance at her acting as if Autumn was gullible enough to be duped by that. He held it back and tried to think of a reason for Lyla to act this way that didn’t make her look bad. As many problems as her Epic obsession caused, she never gave him the impression that she was a bad person. “Lyla,” Jack eventually addressed her, “you aren’t planning on sneaking out of town to get even more pictures of the Panda, are you?”

  37. I may not be the first to mention this, but I have somewhat of a theory concerning a certain Dysian Aimian character we meet in Edgedancer. This almost feels stupid to mention, because of how obvious it feels, but I'll say it anyway: I believe that Arclo, the Sleepless Dysian Aimian who Lift met, is the one who is speaking on the back covers of The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance. This is evidenced by the reader of the covers making indirect references to the main characters of the series, i.e. "The Liar" (Shallan), "The Surgeon" (Kaladin), "The Highprince" (Dalinar), and "The Assassin" (Szeth). He refers to them as the "four who we watch". Arclo says something very similar to that to Lift when talking to her about being a Radiant. Also, the back cover of The Way of Kings begins with the words "I long for the days before the Last Desolation". To me, that sounds like the tone of a person who was alive before the Last Desolation and has happy memories of it. In Edgedancer, Arclo talks to Lift about having known and befriended ancient Knights Radiant, as well as refers to the time before the Last Desolation of being wonderful, honorable days. Arclo speaks the words and speaks with even the same tone as the reader of the back covers, leading me to believe that the ancient Sleepless who goes by Arclo is the one speaking the back covers of the Stormlight Archive. What do you all think?

  38. Point of clarity: your weight does not necessarily affect the amount of force you can Steelpush with. There's a bit of confusion surrounding this, as Kelsier claims he had an advantage against Vin, but he could simply be referring to the fact that, if both of them push on something, she will fly away faster due to her smaller mass, rather than her having weaker steelpushes. I'm currently doing a reread of the original trilogy, and I'm hoping to be able to gain some insight into this, but it is not clear cut. It gets even more complicated when you think about Wax. On the one hand, all of his most impressive pushes have involved increasing his weight, but on the other hand, he specifically says it gets harder to push himself as his weight increases and he slows down, which implies he's not pushing any harder. Regardless, even if your personal weight plays a factor, that still does not mean wearing Plate makes you push harder. It would allow you to push on objects without getting knocked back as far, but you can accomplish the same thing by pushing or pulling on another anchor to counteract it (like basically every Mistborn we've seen do.) Remember that this scenario is based around the idea that Roshar and Scadrial are at war. It is entirely plausible for Scadrial to kill Shardbearers during the conflict and steal their Shards. We have seen Szeth kill multiple Shardbearers plus dozens of infantry by himself, and regular Mistborn are supposed to be more dangerous than him according to WoB. I see no reason why they can't get their hands on a few and then use them to fight Kaladin. You're making the assumption here that Mistborn are preparing to fight other Mistborn, which is not the case here. There's no reason they wouldn't bring Atium to fight against non metalborn. Maybe in the very first battle if they knew nothing about each other, but this is a war, not a single fight. You are massively, massively underestimating Atium here. For a long time, it was basically assumed that the only way to beat someone with Atium is to have more Atium. It is literally the ability to perfectly predict what your opponent is going to do, and expanding your mind to be able to interpret these possibilities and react accordingly. It is a God metal. It is OP. As for being physically superior, I think you're forgetting that Pewter exists. If Kaladin or Szeth can fight Shardbearers with Stormlight, then I have no doubt that Mistborn could, never mind the fact that they could literally see the future. I'm not entirely sure what your point is here. Are you saying that Kaladin is going to get stronger? I mean, sure, most likely, but he's still just one guy. Basically, it comes down to whether or not they have access to Feruchemical speed, which not every Inquisitor did. If I was Scadrial, first thing I'd do is give a stolen Shardblade to one who did and have him assassinate Kaladin with a massive burst of speed. It's kind of hard to fight someone who moves faster than you can see and can kill you in one hit.

  39. As far as Aesudan's view of her relationship with the Almighty, I have no clue. But as for why Jasnah would consider assassination... Jasnah is a scholar who focuses on history. When Dalinar goes off on the tenuous nature of the reign of the first heir of a new kingdom I have a very strong opinion that he learned that tidbit from Jasnah. Dalinar himself is not a scholar, and the people in his life who are accomplished in that field are Jasnah and Navani. Prior to Wok Navani was not a source of knowledge for him, but we know how fond he is of Jasnah. So assuming that Jasnah is aware of the information shared by Dalinar, she knows that once Gavilar dies and Elhokar inherits, that the likelihood of the kingdom falling apart is at it's highest. She is also aware that Elhokar is married to a selfish, foolish, obliviously self serving narcissist. She may have never considered a situation in Which Aesudan's was left to rule Kholinar alone, but she definitely would have seen the way the woman's actions would effect the perception the common people had of the ruling family and how that could have easily been used against them politically. Combine this with the view of morality we know she holds from the alley scene and I truly believe she was just interested in protecting the kingdom her father had worked so hard to build. If Aesudan were up to anything else, I don't think she would have called Liss off.

I've read all the posts that were in this thread as of 7:00am (Brisbane time) on the 2nd of April. Firstly, massive thank you to those who asked after my well-being. I'm okay. You are awesome. Also, thank you so much for giving such thoughtful advice. Your responses have made me happy. Please let me know if I have misinterpreted your words. This is important to me. Alright, I’ve tried to condense all of your advice into four main points: From many of you I was advised to be myself, honest, and sincere. I interpret being myself as striving to be the best version of myself. If that’s what you mean by be myself, then I will do that. From many of you I was advised to show someone that they are deserving, belonging, worthy, and loved. listening giving full attention complimenting them showing them they have real value (e.g. due to their skills) sympathising with them spending time with them on their interests sometimes even if I’m not interested in it showing them they deserve happiness From many of you I was advised to do random acts of kindness, the little things, and to be nice and caring Open the door for others Say hello Smile Ask others how their day has been Comfort others when they’re upset From many of you I was advised to ensure that I be happy myself as well and/or first. That is, not giving up my happiness for others’, and avoiding burnout. I was advised by @Captains Domon to find the deep meaning of happiness. I've taken a stab at it. Note: This ended up being longer than I thought it would be… TL;DR: Happiness is not constant pleasure Love yourself Love others Believe you (and others) can do good and important things Try to do good and important things Alrighty then. I'm going to try science. The four main chemicals that we seem to link to happiness are dopamine, endorphins, oxytocin, and serotonin. Dopamine comes from plenty of sleep, regular exercise, and achieving goals. It can also come from eating foods with high amounts of glucose (sugar) (this is relevant to a point I make below), according to some site/s on the internet It is linked to feeling bliss, pleasure, euphoria, motivation. Endorphins come from exercising, laughter, dark chocolate, and spicy food. They are linked to feeling energised and in a better mood, and counterbalancing stress and anxiety. Oxytocin comes from feeling more intimate with someone, from hugs, handshakes, and gift-giving. It is linked to feelings of love, intimacy, trust, and connection. Serotonin seems harder to link to general activities. Serotonin levels dictate your general mood. Serotonin levels can be raised by random acts of kindness, or by remembering past achievements, victories or other positive memories. It is linked to feelings of satisfaction, accomplishment, and importance. Its absence is linked to feelings of loneliness, bleakness, and general unhappiness. I think that many people believe that perfect happiness is a constant feeling of dopamine-linked feelings (that is, pleasure) and so try to find a way to feel pleasure constantly (dopamine-linked feelings), for example by consuming glucose high foods, a readily available method of increasing dopamine levels (Though there are other readily available sources. This is an example). I've read that getting too much dopamine can cause our body to decrease the number of receptors we have for them. That is, if we have lots of glucose high food every day, the number of dopamine receptors we have will decrease. This will cause it to always be more difficult to be happier from dopamine. Based on this, in order to feel significant amounts of pleasure from dopamine, we need to make sure we maintain a high number of receptors for dopamine. This can be done by moderating dopamine sources such as high glucose foods, and so avoid having extremely high dopamine levels. Therefore, I think a more realistic view of happiness means only seeking out high dopamine inducing activities (e.g. eating a large quantity of high glucose food) on rare occasions, to maintain a high number of dopamine receptors. This means that little bursts of dopamine from achieving small goals every day will feel significant. I think to have a happy life, it is necessary to also seek happiness from the three other happiness chemicals: endorphins, oxytocin, and serotonin by: Setting goals (and celebrating them), sleeping well, and moderating usage of high-dopamine-inducing-agents for Dopamine Exercising and laughing often for Endorphins Forming close relationships for oxytocin Frequently reflecting on positive memories for Serotonin. There are some other things that most people can do to get better levels of these happiness chemicals. These are: Figuring out who you want to be, and striving to be like that. (For serotonin and dopamine) Finding goals that you believe in, and striving for them. (For dopamine) Forgiving yourself when you fail, and trying again. (For serotonin) Believing that everyone (including yourself) is worthy of happiness. (For serotonin) Forgiving others when they do something you think is wrong or incorrect. (serotonin) Being optimistic (note: believing that we can cause good things to happen, not believing that good things absolutely will happen) (serotonin) Believing that no person is your enemy (serotonin) Respecting other people’s views (serotonin) I think the advice you gave me can be linked to these chemicals too. No. 1 can be linked to increasing oxytocin levels (allows genuine trust and connection) No. 2 can be linked to serotonin and possibly oxytocin (making a person feel important, and making them feel loved) No. 3 can be linked to serotonin and oxytocin as well (making a person feel important, decreasing their stress, and making them feel loved) No. 4 isn’t directly linked to making others feel happy, but it would be much more difficult more me to manage making other people happy if I was unhappy. Ok. That took a while. It wasn't very deep either. One conflict in advice was between being selfless or not. It seems like the solution is to do what I can without dealing damage to my own life or mental health. I was also advised by @Captains Domon that for someone to be happy their spirit has to be peaceful. This sounds intriguing, though I’m not certain of what a peaceful spirit means. If it means reducing stress, it sounds good to me. Feel free to let me know how I got this wrong. Some of you asked why I’m asking for this advice. I want to open by saying that I am okay. I feel fairly happy in my life. The reason I want to learn to make others happy isn’t linked to a specific event or anything. It's because I figure that if I can learn to make others happy, and then make others happy, then I am doing good work (Maybe that means ultimately my goal is self-serving because it would make me happier to make others happy. Maybe it’s like a symbiotic relationship). @Zeldan said “You have obviously never held a door open for an extreme feminist.” I think this raises an important point: that people need to be respected in order to be happy. This ties in to people needing a sense of belonging to be happy. It would be hard to feel belonging if you didn’t feel respected, I think. Many of you mentioned that there is no one-size-fits-all method of making people happy (or something along those lines). I sort of agree, but ultimately I think it’s possible to figure out all the different ‘sizes’ for making people happy. One more thing. @Mr. Staccato, your psycho-analysis is super-duper-mega welcome. Rather than offended, I’m flattered. And as @Darkness Ascendant said, you described that side perfectly. Respect. In summary, some things I should do to make other people happy are: Be myself, honest, and sincere. Show others that they are deserving, belonging, worthy, and loved. Do random acts of kindness, the little things, and to be nice/caring Ensure that I am happy myself as well and/or first. Thank you @Captains Domon, @Elenion, @Sunbird, @Darkness Ascendant, @Mestiv, @A Budgie, @Straw, @Ammanas, @Tristan, @Erunion, @Orlion On a Cob, @Zeldan, and @Mr. Staccato. Notes: I would LOVE to get more advice from you. Your responses are wonderful, and they may be useful to others reading as well. I would love more advice on how to show people that they are deserving, belonging worthy, and loved. I would love more advice on how to comfort others when they are upset. I would love advice on how to make jokes! Wow! If you read all the way down to here, you are a champion. Have a cookie (It hasn’t been spiked, as far as I know )

  42. I found this old WoB. Perhaps the Southern Scadrians could have been taught to distill ettmetal from the gaseous form of Harmony? Doesn't help the pre-catacedre ettmetal theory (since the mists were Preservation and if they could do that they would all be Mistborn, unless they can only make a tiny amount) but makes me wonder whether that could be how they get ettmetal now? Anyway it was an interesting WoB I hadn't seen before, thought it may lead to some more relevant thoughts.

  44. In Oathbringer the 17th shard will catch up with Hoid. The 3 we have seen will attempt to apprehend him and we will get to see Hood in action for the first time. but after an epic (non lethal battle), Hoid will escape with ease. The 3 worldhoppers will go back to the leader of the 17th shard to inform him of their failure. This is not Frost as we may be lead to believe, he just happens to be in league with them. Instead he is a man baring a full head of blonde hair with dashing looks, a spike through one eye and scars down his arms. Kelsier has spent the past several hundred years forming the 17th shard for his own goals...goals that Hoid's actions are impeding.

  46. Ok, we're done with "The name of this book is a secret" series, and the "Janitors" series by Tyler Whitesides (That one was enjoyed a lot). Other than Pratchet, anyone else have books that are similar in style and/or content to Alcatraz?

  47. My personal theory is that Joel couldn't become a Rithmatist because he is already being used as a vessel for something. Here are my reasons: Joel's father traveled a lot to potentially dangerous places like Nebrask. Joel's father was not a Rithmatist, but somehow was able to figure out stuff about Rithmatists that no one else was able to figure out. Due to those two points I theorize that Joel's father was being used as a vessel for something. Perhaps this is a third side we haven't even encountered yet. When Joel's father died Joel was sitting in a room with him holding his hand. My theory is that at this point whatever was using Joel's dad for a vessel transferred to Joel. When Joel tried to touch the thing in the inception room it reacted badly because of whatever is already using Joel as a vessel. Anyway, this is my theory, but I hadn't seen it proposed anywhere yet.
